Troubles connecting on to server

Hey
I convinced my family into buying an airport extreme recently so we can watch the movies we download wirelessly but recently i can't connect to the airport from my mac book. on finder when i try to connect i get this message. what do i do for troubleshooting?
There was an error connecting to the server "My server". Check the server name or IP address, then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.

We download movies off the internet on to external hard drives then play them off the airport... it's more of a storage and convenience thing really plus it has the wireless internet thats why we have it like this

I'm being shown an error pop-up message periodically saying "There was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type 'file:' are not supported." I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and at no time am I actually having trouble connecting to the server, but this message continues to pop-up several times a day at random intervals. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or is my computer just having a glitch? Other than that, and a mildly sticking caps lock button, it's working perfectly.
    Thank you!

Alright it didn't solve it. Any other suggestions?
I haven't suggested a solution yet. I want to know whether you still get the messages while Time Machine is disabled. Do you? If so, try any or all of the solutions proposed in this thread:

  • We are having trouble connecting to the server-sign in lync 2013

    hello all,
I'm trying to sign in to my lync from my host , all my work is virtual .
under certificate trusted root i put my CA but when i try to connct i have the error: "we are having trouble connecting to the server" knowing that
under \etc , i inser @IP_lyncmachine  name_lync_machine  and in the option of  lync i choose manually
    any advice?

You can run the command netstat –ano with command prompt to check whether port 5061 is listening. You also need to create a firewall policy to allow the traffice through 5061 from the subnet the phisical computer locates to Lync Front End Server

  • We're having trouble connecting to the server

    HI,
We install SharePoint 2013 on Azure and were using it from clients via vpn connection to our Azure virtual Net.
When trying to edit or add office document from the client  we get this error: "we're having trouble connecting to the server..."
sometimes will get the "document is locked ..." which is typical for a document which is still locked by office , I guess its all related to some connection failure from the office client.
    Thanks

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you failed to edit or add office document from the client.
Usually a file is locked when a particular user has ‘checked out’ the file for editing purposes. A write lock is created so that no other user can edit this file simultaneously.
There can be numerous reasons for this such as:
             1.    System crashes while the file is still open.
             2.    File has been closed unexpectedly.
             3.    Check in was not successful.
             4.    Network connection is lost while file is still open.
In most of the cases, the write lock still exist for the file so its gives an editing error.
To resolve the issue, you follow the steps in the article as below:
SharePoint error: File is locked for editing by ‘domain\username' : SharePoint Tutorial #6

  • Trouble connecting to OSX server from XP domain members

Can someone help me out with a problem connecting to our OS X server from Windows XP? Basically, I only have trouble connecting from XP machines that are members of the domain.
    Here are some details:
OS X Server 10.3.9, bound to domain through Active Directory.
Windows Services role = Domain Member.
Computer name (under Windows Services) = macserver
Connects fine from Macs via Network>Domain>macserver
    macserver IP address: 192.168.1.5
Sharing 1 folder to all members of the domain.
I can connect fine from OS X computers and XP computers that are NOT members of the domain
I can connect from XP domain members via the IP address \\192.168.1.5
I cannot connect from XP domain members via Network Neighborhood>Domain>macserver, or by entering the computer name. Error message recieved: "The account is not authorized to log on from this location."
I can ping macserver from any xp machine and it resolves the IP address.
I can browse the webserver on OSX Server via http://macserver.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Eric

I can't remember how I resolved this. I think I had a number of problems, for instance, spaces in fileshare names. I might also have set up the domain incorrectly. Who knows.

  • Trouble connecting to Lion server AFP shares after changing server's hostname

    Hello everyone,
I recently changed hostname of my Lion server box (via Server application) and now my clients are having a problem when trying to connect to its AFP shares via aliases. It takes 160 seconds of "resolving alias to <sharename>" before it finally works. Aliases were created by navigating to the server, connecting with "Connect As", providing valid credentials, then navigating one level up and dragging the share icon (blue disk with three white people outlines) to the Desktop with Option-Command.
What is interesting, if I create a new account on a client machine, create an alias, and click on it - it works without any delay, as it was for the clients that are having problems now; so I'm assuming some details about the previous server name got cached somewhere.
The clients with long delay problems can access the shares quickly if they click on the server in the Finder window drawer, then "Connect As" and provide their login credentials - it works instantly then.
I've been digging around quite a bit (deleting Keychain saved Network passwords for any and all references to the server I could find), and also by looking at kerberos logs on the server. What is interesting, the newly created clients I mention above who don't have delay with connecting, don't leave any records in the kerberos log file; but the ones that have 160 second delay do - there's nothing for 160 seconds, and then there is a flurry of activity, as the connection is finally established.
When a client who has trouble connecting uses the "Connect As" method described above, entries in the Kerberos log are created instantly when client clicks connect.
Probably also worth noting that renaming of the server was related to me setting up Open Directory on it.
Any pointers would be greatly apprecited.

I experienced almost exactly the problems you described. I also found that connecting via command line using mount_afp worked right away... and once the connection is established, mounting via finder was super fast.
Tried all kinds of craziness on the client, even a full Time Machine restore.
    Tried fixing Open Directory.
I was absolutely stumped by what was happening, but then thought, Hmm. I'm wondering if it's related to MobileMe going down? I noticed it started to happen after July 31...
Success! That was it! Signing out of MobileMe in System Preferences made everything work the way it should!
CDPlayer2: check if the clients are signed in to MobileMe, and if signing out fixes things - I'd appreciate it if you could post your results. Thanks.

  • Trouble Connecting G5 to Server on Company Network

We have 2 Networks that are connected via VPN between the firewalls. The G5 is connected to our network (#1) and is trying to connect to a server on the other Network (#2). There are a number of servers that it connect to already on the Network #2.
When we try to connect through Go>Connect to Serverand click on Browse we can see the server we can want to connect to (pings on both sides also show comeback good) When we enter in the SMB path with the Share we are trying to connect to and click connect it states: Connecting then states that there is a wrong password and/or user name. Any other server connection there is a prompt for the user name and password for this particular on there is not. We are also not using the Password Keys. What could be causing this?

This sounds more like an issue with the network you are on than an EAS issue, I know there is an issue with slow opening objects in EAS which has been addressed in an EAS patch.
If EAS performs well when logged directly into the server then you probably need to focus your attention on the network side.

  • Trying to restore ipod from icloud backup "trouble connecting to the server"

I'm attempting to restore my son's iPod Touch from his iCloud backup. It's connecting to WiFi just fine, then I tell it that I need to restore from iCloud backup, and it asks me to sign him in.
When I sign him in, it seems to accept it, then goes to the "Birthday" screen and asks for his birthday. When I put in his correct birth date, it then takes me to the "Terms and Conditions" screen, and I accept that.
The very next thing I see is a popup that says "Could Not Sign In. There was a problem connecting to the server."
Every time. No explanation of what this means.
I apologize if this has been answered already, but I've googled it and searched it in these forums for days with no real luck.
Anyone who can help, I appreciate it!

After two hours I learned that they "birthday" question is a creating a bug on itunes account server. In order to fix this problem you will need to go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and put another birthday date that is not the original birthday date you submitted. Pick a birthday that allows you to update your account. As soon as you do that and save it to your account the problem seems to be fixed.

  • Trouble connecting to external server with 10.9.2

So despite all my complaints about Mavericks 10.9 and 10.9.1, I was at least able to mount my GoDaddy server on the disk. Although whenever I restarted the computer, I had to run the mounting program/script again.
But now, with 10.9.2 it has stopped working! This is especially infuriating because one of the supposed benefits of the update is this:
    > Improves reliability when connecting to a file server using SMB2
    So much for that.
Has anyone else had this problem and/or found a solution?
When it tries to run, these are the error messages I get (one after the other):

I'm not aware of anything special you should need to do. The only factor that immediately springs to mind is the encoding, of user name or password. Do you have any message from the cloud server that explains what problem it is having?

  • Trouble connecting to SMTP server

    Hi folks, me again.
I've just gone through this guide to set up a mail server on my Arch VPS and hit a stumbling block. SMTP on the server seems to work okay; I can send emails from the PostfixAdmin interface to my Googlemail inbox without a problem. I can also get to the point where my desktop and mobile clients accept my IMAP settings, but can't authenticate when it comes to adding in the SMTP settings. I've checked and double-checked everything in my config files against the guide (and had to add port 993 to the courier-imap config file) and everything now seems to be okay, but still it fails. Roundcube just gives me a 'Login failed' message (whereas before it was unable to connect to the IMAP server) and clients just tell me that they're unable to connect. If I set the port on one of these clients to 25, I get messages along the lines of 'TLS required but not supported by the server' - I'm sure that this shouldn't be a problem, though, considering the configuration options shown in the guide.
If I comment out smtpd_tls_auth_only = yes in /etc/postfix/main.cf, then try to connect on port 25, I get an incorrect username/password error; surely the SMTP credentials are the ones set in the database and the same ones used for IMAP authentication? All of the details in the four files referenced by /etc/postfix/main.cf are correct and the queries match those that the author has placed on the wiki page.
I was told that I could use testsaslauthd to check the credentials. I'm not sure if that is correct, however, when doing so this is what I end up with:
    joel [~]
    > testsaslauthd -u [email protected] -p test -s smtp
    0: NO "authentication failed"
Now I'll admit, I'm very inexperienced when it comes to mail servers, postfix etc. (I only really know MS Exchange, heh) so I definitely find myself lost here. Could anyone point me in the direction of some extra tests I could run to help narrow down the problem, or options that I should check to make sure users are able to log in? I'd very much appreciate any pointers that anyone can give as right now I haven't got a clue where I've gone wrong.

Just an update on this, in case anyone is able to help. I had to edit /etc/pam.d/smtp and change passwdcolumn to passwordcolumn and I think I've made progress. I now get the following error shown in /var/log/auth.log.
Oct 5 09:31:51 localhost saslauthd[23430]: pam_mysql - MySQL error(You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'FROM mailbox WHERE username = '[email protected]'' at line 1)
Now, the syntax in /etc/postfix/virtual_mailbox_maps.cf is as follows:
query = SELECT maildir FROM mailbox WHERE username='%s'
I'm not sure what the error with this is, though, because if I manually run the query it returns exactly what I would expect.
    mysql> SELECT maildir FROM mailbox WHERE username='[email protected]';
    +---------------------+
    | maildir |
    +---------------------+
    | [email protected]/ |
    +---------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
The maildir for the user exists under /home/vmail, so I don't see it as being a problem there, but the query looks correct. I've compared this with the same query from other guides and it's the same, so it should work, shouldn't it? Again, any help would be appreciated. I've searched around for others experiencing the problem but not come up with anything. I've checked the table and all the columns are there.

  • HT1277 I'm having trouble connecting my Exchange Server with my Apple Mail product.

Per setting up the account, I'm getting email, so, I believe my Exchange IMAP is correct, but, I cannot send email to anyone outside my internal network.  The wierd thing is that when I go to the Connection Doctor (after I get the Try Again...or...Try Again with Selected Server screen), I get a green light on the SMTP Server and a red light on the Exchange IMAP Server.  Any comments would be appreciated.

    Edgar,
I highly recommend, if you live in an area where there may be overlapping WiFi networks..  use recent OS X's hidden WiFi Diagnostics utility......
Hold down the Option key, click on the WiFi icon in the menu bar and click on Open WiFi Diagnostics... This works for (maybe 10.7... cant remember..) 10.8,10.9 and 10.10.
...and check for any nearby WiFis that may be on the same channel.... and if there are, change your WiFi channel to a different one so your signal remains clear  of interference and more importantly uninterrupted... LR seems very susceptible to such brief 'breaks' or interruptions...
Personally because of where I live, there are no competing networks and I have no issues at all using LR with any of my 5 LP rigs here.. switching between them at will....
The only other item of interest that I have found when troubleshooting such issues.. is the use of non Apple Routers..... and a failure of automatic port forwarding for example...but this cause usually prevents connection altogether and not intermittent issues... Haven't come across anyone using an Airport Extreme for example.. from 2009 onwards, who has any issues connecting LR to LPX... but a number of older Netgear, TP-Link and D-Links ones seems to have this issue at times...
    Cheers..
    Nigel

  • Can't remotely connect to my server if I automatically set date and time

    Hello.
I have configured my OS X 10.6.2 server and am able to remotely manage it.
The only ports I have opened on my router is for Mail and VPN services.
Things work perfectly because I can connect using VPN to iChat, iCal, Address Book, Server Admin, Workgroup Manager, AFP, FTP and such.
The problem is that on my laptop from home, or wherever, if its time is set to update automatically from an NTP server (I have tried with Apple's as well as my server for the NTP Servers) then I cannot connect to my server at all...
The moment I turn off the auto date and time and reconnect to the office's VPN, I am able to use Server Admin, AFP, FTP, Workgroup Manager, Screen Sharing, etc, etc, etc.
It's utterly frustrating because I have to open system preferences, disable the automatic date and time update, connect to the VPN and do stuff on the server. Then I have to disconnect from VPN and re enable the auto date and time.
Could someone explain why this is happening and any possible solutions I might be able to try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Felipe.

OK, after some testing things seem to be working now.
I opened the NTP port for my server (So I don't have to be on VPN to update the time)....But regardless of that, Server admin and my corporate site work fine.
Here is my problem, I don't understand why it's working now when 30 minutes ago I was having trouble connecting to my server regardless of what NTP Server I used.
The only service I can't access is Workgroup Manager, but I don't know if that is supposed to be accessible only locally (though it doesn't matter since I can screen share but I would still like to know).
    Thanks in advance,
    Felipe.
