Troubles syncing photos from a shared library..

Hello,
When I try to sync photo's to my ipod touch from a iPhoto library that is shared in a folder within the "Users" directory - I get an error that says "You cannot sync your ipod touch as you do not have enough privileges ..." or something very similar.
I used to sync my own iPhoto library without issue and I think (but cannot be sure) that the issue arose when I went to a shared library.
I am pretty sure it is the photos that are creating the problem as when I turn off the option to sync photos all other sync processes complete without error.
I have repaired permissions on my disk (twice)
I have restored my ipod touch once
I have checked to see that permissions are set correctly on the iTunes library.
None of this has solved the problem. One other note of interest, even though the sync is not completing properly my Macbook is seeing the structure of the library file as my sync options mirror the events and folder structure that exists within the shared library.
I hope someone can help and I welcome any direction or suggestions.
I have checked the permissions on the actual library and

I got the same problem with a shared iPhoto library which was created according to
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
However, when I deleted the iPod Photo Cache as suggested, the problem still occurred to standard users (my wife and son), but not my account (admin). I checked the folder privilege after it was created after deletion and found that "everyone" shown "read only", not "read and write". Even manually change it to "read and write" cannot solve the problem.
Any idea?
N.B. The iPhoto library can be shared among different users on my iMac without problem.

  • Why does a black triangle appear instead of landscape photos from a shared library

We have an iMac using OSX10.7.5 and running iPhoto 11 v9.4.1.
There are 2 users of the iMac with separate logins.  We have an iPhoto library that is user 1 administers and imports photos to, edits photos etc.  User 1 can access and see all photos without any problems in thumbnail or large scale/full screen under their login.
When user 2 accesses the photos on the user 2 login, all photos can be seen in thumbnail, but when double clicked to show photos at larger to full screen size, all portrait pictures show ok, but after a first landscape photo sometimes showing, the rest of the landscope photos produce (sometimes) a flash of the picture but then the area of the photo goes black with a warning sign, that is a triangle with an explanation mark appears in the centre of the screen.
If user 2 runs a slideshow, the portrait pictures show up, the screen is black/blank whilst landcsape photos would be shown
A very few landscape photos can be seen and they all appear to be files of less than 1.5mb, but this does not apply to all photos of less than 1.5mb.
The photo library has photos from 2 iPhone 4s, 2 Leica and 2 Nikon cameras of varying sizes. The problem does not seem to be associated with any particular camera.
User 2 (my wife) is very unhappy!
    Any help and insights welcome.
    Many thanks
    Wally

Where is this library located? If it's in the Shared folder then that's probably why you're having problems. But it's usually with permissions, not broken links/file path to the original photo that the exclamation mark is an indication of.
Your best and most trouble free solution is to put the library on an external hard drive that's been formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with owner ship set to be ignored:
You can try the following to fix the problem but be warned that the problme may manifest itself again after some use: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • HT4959 Having trouble syncing photos from iPhone 4S to Aperture 3.3

When I connected my iPhone 4S to my MAC to update photos, Aperture is my default, it will prompt me to import my photos from my iPhone.  Last night because apparently mobileme has been discontinued, it prompted me about something to do with a library and when I clicked OK, the downloading bar showed but nothing was downloading.  I had to 'force quit' in order to be able to go to another application.
What am I doing wrong?  I've never been able to use mobileme as an email account as my carrier is verizon.net.  Any advice?

Appears to be a bug. Click on the Learn More button.  That should stop any attempt at downloading and take you to an Apple website which you can close and then continue with what you were doing.

  • Trouble syncing photos from itunes (file locked)

Whenever I select a folder from which to sync pictures from, it tells me, (The ipod cannot be synced, the required file is locked)
It actually says this whenever itunes says "syncing ipod"
First of all, What file? What's the file called? Where can I find this file? and finally, How do I "unlock" it?
    Thanks in advance

Try deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache folder on your computer. This will require re-syncing the selected photos creating a new iPod Photo Cache folder.

  • Trouble syncing photos from iPhoto '11 to iPhone 4.

I synced all photos to iPhoto '11 from my iPhone, deleted all photos off my iPhone 4, and now that I've organized my events in iPhoto '11, I am unable to put those same photos back onto my iPhone. Some photos will sync, but not all of them. It seems like all of the photos I manually deleted will not sync back onto the phone.
I get this message: "Some of your photos, including the photo 'IMG.JPG', were not copied to the iPhone because they cannot be displayed on your iPhone."
I've tried a restore on my iPhone. No luck.
I've also tried deleting the iPod Photo Cache folder with no resolution.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Have you updated iPhoto? Current version is 8.1.2. If you haven't updated, that's your problem.

  • Unable to sync photos from iPhoto

Got an 8GB iPod Touch yesterday. I can sync everything except my photos from iPhoto. When I go to the Photo tab in iTunes, I place a tick in the check-box that says "Sync photos from:" and then I select iPhoto from the Combo-box. There are 2 radio buttons but only "All photos and albums" is available... "Selected Albums" is greyed out. The box below the radio buttons is also grey and has no entries.
If I try to sync "All photos and albums" I get an error message on my computer that reads: "The iPod [iPod name] cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
Software updates have all been applied, I have restored my iPod, have verified and fixed file permissions, etc. I have rebuilt the iPhoto library (Command-Option). Both iTunes and iPhoto have been working fine, with no other problems. I am using iLife '08 so I am using iPhoto '08 (version 7.1 (347)).
Has anyone any experience with the problem? I'm thinking that my next step is to reinstall iPhoto/iTunes but I would much rather not have to do that... any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Bill
P.S. I can sync photos from my desktop, just not from iPhoto '08.
P.P.S. My 5th gen video iPod can sync photos from my iPhoto library!

    Hi Damon,
Thanks for the update and the suggestion of trying a new user account... I don't know why that didn't occur to me. Well, you will not be too surprised to hear that with a new user account the photos synced no problem.
That leaves me with an iPhoto library rebuild on my hands. The Apple provided rebuild didn't resolve my issue when I tried it last week. So I will need to do a manual rebuild... something which I have done once before but vowed never to do again as I lost hundreds of hours of work organising and tagging my photos... something which I have invested considerable time in recovering and don't want to lose them again.
With Leopard around the corner, I will be performing a clean install of the new OS on a fresh HDD within the month, so I am going to recreate my iPhoto library that way... rather than invest time now only to see it wasted later.
Thanks once again for the pointers to those Apple docs... most useful.
    Kind regards,
    William

  • When trying to sync photos from my PC only a few of the photos end up on my ipad. How can I fix this?

I am having trouble syncing photos from my PC, only a few end up on my ipad. Does anyone know how to manage this?

Are you sure that you have selected the photos to sync to the iPad? You must include all of your photos in one main syncing folder in each subsequent sync as well or the previously synced photos will be erased.
Connect the iPad to the PC and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Photos Tab on the right.
Select the photos folder that you want to use in the Sync Photos From heading
Click on any or all of the sub folders within that main folder that you want to sync to the iPad
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

  • Possible to sync photos from Aperture to iPod via iTunes?

When I used iPhoto, I set iTunes to sync photos from the iTunes Library with my iPod. Now that I use Aperture, there is no equivalent option to have iTunes look at the original photos in Aperture and copy them to the iPod so I can view them.
I can copy a Vault from Aperture to the iPod, but that's like copying any other data file -- it is stored, but photos cannot be viewed.

Well, that was an interesting idea, Colin, but it didn't work. I opened iTunes, and then dragged the Aperture repository into it. It seemed to acknowledge it (when I dragged it onto iTunes, the "dragging" icon wasn't x'ed out), but it didn't add anything to the library.
If you try to do an "Add to Library" from iTunes, and then navigate to the Aperture repository, the repository folder is grayed out. It can't be selected. Same for a backup Vault created from Aperture.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. It's always worth experimenting. (Assuming everything is backed up. )

  • Streaming photos from main itunes library (syncing library)

I have synced my AppleTV (40G) with my main computer and iTunes library - this works fine. But since my iTunes & Photo libraries are larger than the space on my AppleTV I wanted to stream the rest of the content including photos from this same computer. Unfortunately, the extra photos are not streamed. I must be missing something. Recommendations?

on this same point, I am trying to stream movies from my mini to my tv but want to sync photos from the same mini to the same tv. it appears that i can only sync or only stream but not both from the same source. am i doing something wrong?

  • Can't sync my photo from my iphoto library.

While syncing, an error message (-50) showed up.
After checking around, I found that i can't sync photos from iPhoto because it displayed no albums in my iPhoto library under the "Photos" tab but there actually are albums in my iPhoto.
It remained the same even after i restored my iPod.
    Does anyone know the issue?
iMac 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Success! The problem was due to escaped unicode characters within the AlbumData.xml file. I had first suspected it was the tilde-n combination within many of my photo comments. When I went to grep them out in BBEdit, I noticed an escape sequence for a unicode character in the search string. Unfortunately, replacing them in the AlbumData.xml didn't work. As soon as I would relaunch iPhoto it would put the characters back, which meant manually removing that comment sequence from a series of about 120 photos. Finding a script on Apple's site called 'Speak Comments.scpt' and commenting out the lines for speaking the comment (lines 15-18) and adding the following line before them:
set the comment of this_photo to ""
allowed me to remove the problematic comments from just the set of offending photos without having to do them by hand. As soon as this was done, iTunes recognized my iPhoto libraries and synced them to the 5G iPod without a hitch. The script is available from:

  • HT4236 Having trouble deleting synced photos from phone

I deleted all my photos on my camera roll but I am not able to delete all of the albums.

    Hi Natiyellowboi!
The answer to your question is located in the article you have linked above, and I will highlight it here:
    iTunes: Syncing photos
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4236
To delete synced photos and videos from your device
In iTunes, click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.)
Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Note: To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
    Click Apply.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • Itunes will not sync. my photos from my Iphoto library

Itunes will not sync. my photos from my Iphoto library
When I try to sync photos to my iPod (80gb video Ipod) it gives me the error "The iPod cannot by synced. The required file cannot be found." Does anyone know what file this is and why it cannot find it? Thanks for any help.

I asked the same question last February and got no help from Apple and a well intentioned but not so useful reply from a fellow Mac user.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=843093&tstart=0
However, when switching to a new MacBook Pro, I observed what happened and found out the root of the problem.
When you tell iTunes to sync your iPod with your iPhoto Library, it creates a folder called "iPod Photo Cache" at >User>Pictures>iPhoto Library, which depending on the size of your iPhoto library, or how many pics you want to sync with iTunes, it can be huge! (1,600+ pics created a 1Gb+ folder).
The solution is obvious: just delete that folder and let these applications create a new one next time you instruct iTunes to sync your photos. To be sure, next time you open iTunes after you throw away that folder, uncheck the iPhoto option, close iTunes, make sure the folder is gone, and then, when you open iTunes again with your iPod connected, check it again having made sure that the pesky folder is not there and iTunes (or iPhoto, who knows) will create a fresh one.
By the way, iPod Photo Cache folders are created all over the place! Do a Spotlight search in your hard drive and you will be amazed about how many you will find!
    Good luck! Hope it works!

  • Sync photos from two libraries

How can I sync photos from two libraries? after syncing one of them I close that library and open the other and choose to select certain albums and the warning pops up that if I sync the current selection all others will be replaced with the current library. So it appears that you can't add to the ATV hard drive additional photos from the second library without losing the content you already have from the first one.Is streaming the answer, and if so how do you do that?

You can't sync more then 1 library with the apple tv. Your only option would be to sync with one and stream with the other. Just make sure on the second library that you set it to share and then go to computers on the apple tv and select the shared library. ATV will give you a code that you will set on the second library when you have itunes open. Put in the code and you will be able to stream
