Troubles with AirPlay from iPhones to AppleTV

It feels like our AppleTV works worse and worse with every software update. It worked flawlessly when we first bought it: our iPhones would easily connect to the AppleTV and stream music.
Now, many software updates later, it takes numerous attempts just to wake up the AppleTV and start streaming music from an iPhone. I typically have to start playing music on my iPhone first, then select AppleTV, then wait a few minutes and repeat the process several times until it works.
Things have become even worse after one of the last updates: AppleTV still appears as an available device from an iPhone, but selecting it and starting playing music does not wake the AppleTV up. I either have to wake it up manually using the remote or keep it always on.
Also, after one of the latest updates, AppleTV stopped supporting gapless playback when music is steamed from an iPhone. It happens only if I steam from an iPhone to the AppleTV: If I used headphones, bluetooth devices, or stream from a Macbook Pro, then it's normal gapless playback.
I tried resetting the AppleTV numerous times with no improvements.
I'm quite sure that the problem is not with my iPhone: the same thing happens with all our iPhones (we have several in the house). Also, I have recently upgraded from an iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, and it's the same story with the new device.
I'm believe that there are no problems with our wi-fi network: AirPlay works absolutely fine from the Macbook Pro every time.
Can anything be done?

Just a quick update: I went to the Apple store today and my AppleTV was quickly replaced with a new one, even though my unit was over 2 years old. I checked the new unit at home an everything works flawlessly so far.
If you are experiencing wi-fi issues with your AppleTV similar to mine, check if your unit falls under the 2013 replacement program, before any troubleshooting. I've seen quite a few posts on different forums from people describing similar issues who are unaware of the replacement program. Somehow it went under the radar.
I came across the replacement program only after searching the web for AppleTV's randomly turning off (another issue that became very common in the last few weeks before the replacement).

  • Trouble using AirPlay between iMac and AppleTV

    I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.5 and I'm having trouble using AirPlay between iMac and AppleTV (2nd Gen).  It used to work fine, but for some reason it just stopped responding.  I can see my media on my iMac from AppleTV and I can see AppleTV from my iMac when attempting to use AirPlay.  However, when I try to pull or push media from my iMac to AppleTV it just stalls and never loads.  AirPlay works fine from my iPhone and iPad with AppleTV - it's limited to my iMac only.
    I'm using a Netgear R7000 wireless router and a Netgear AC120 WiFi Extender and as such, I have 4 available wireless networks (2 from the router and 2 from the extender / 2 - 2.4 GHz and 2 - 5 GHz).  My internet access is great and my network performance is good across the board.  All of my software/firmware is up to date (iMac, AppleTV and router/extenders). I've tried all combinations (mixing/matching) all of my wireless networks between devices (iMac/AppleTV) - nothing makes a difference (again, AirPlay works fine between my mobile devises/AppleTV).  Netgear Genie has been making changes to my network settings as new firmware has been installed in both the router and extender.  I'm guessing there is something screwy going on with the network settings on the iMac, but I can't figure it out.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    I'm glad you got it all working. Out of interest, how do you (or your son) connect to the internet now? Is it just a dial-up connection? If it is, I am sure you know that, even if you get the Apple TV to share the connection, the speed will seriously limit the use of many of the Apple TV's features.
    The Airport Extreme is a great router but you will need a DSL or cable modem as well as it won't connect to the internet without one. There are many great (and cheaper!) combined modem/routers available if your son wants to get a high-speed network up and running at lower cost. Any other computers, phones, games consoles etc that you may have in the house can then all connect easily.
    I hope that I have helped a little and I will look out for future posts in case I can help again.

    I'm having trouble with my new iPhone.it seems it likes to turn it self off for no reason at all.i would like to know is this a hardware or software problem or just a iPhone problem i don't know.

    basic troubleshooting steps from the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.
    Have ANY of these been tried?

    You can sync/manually mange iphone with one and only one computer.  If you sync/manually mange to anther, then it will erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.

    No picture when mirroring airplay from iPhone to apple tv

    Sorry, your profile says iPhone 4. Best to be specific or have things up to date in order to avoid misunderstandings and prompt assistance.
    In any case you are still using basic airplay. You need to enable mirroring and this cannot be done within an app.

  • Having trouble with the "SIMYO" iPhone 4 internet configuration.. Anybody could help me?

    I am having trouble with the "SIMYO" iPhone 4 internet configuration.. I've been trying to do the configuration 10-15 times now and still, it doesn't work. Anybody could help me please!!

    I don't see SIMYO anywhere on the list of supported carriers: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937
    Unless you're talking about a carrier on this list, you're going to have to work it out with them. It's possible their network is just not compatible. They are definitely not a supported carrier.

  • AirPlay YouTube from iPhone to AppleTV over LTE w/ No Hotspot

    The goal:
    My goal is to AirPlay Youtube videos from the iPhone 6+ on iOS8.1 to the AppleTV v3 on 7.0.1 over LTE without using the iPhone as a Hotspot.
    The problem:
    The problem is that streaming video from internet sources does not function. However, I can do AirPlay mirroring of browsing websites over LTE. I suspect that I am making a mistake in my network configuration OR that what I am attempting to do is not possible.

    What I am able to do:
    Use the AppleTV remote APP on my iPhone to control the AppleTV.
    Use AirPlay to stream music on my iPhone to the AppleTV.
    Use AirPlay to stream video on my iPhone to the AppleTV.
    Use AirPlay to do iPhone mirroring.
    Browse the internet over LTE and mirror various webpages to the AppleTV.
    Load the YouTube APP on the iPhone and mirror YouTube video search results to the AppleTV.
    What I am NOT able to do:
    Load video from YouTube and have it play over AirPlay.
    The "loading spinner" is displayed on the television AppleTV and on the iPhone.
    After a time, the video fails to load and this error message appears in the YouTube video placeholder on the iPhone "Playback error / Tap to retry." At the same time, this error message appear on the television: "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later."
    If, while the video is loading, I switch AirPlay FROM the AppleTV TO the iPhone, the video loads fine and I can watch it on my iPhone.
    Any suggestions or insights would be appreciated!

    Hey,
    I'm using the exact same setup for my car, and am facing the exact issue.
    I suspect the problem is from how YouTube app works. All the "What I am able to do" and "What I am NOT able to do" make me believe that when Airplay-ing a video with YouTube app on iPhone, it sends the url to Apple TV, asking Apple TV to download the video directly over its own network. With our network setup, the router is not connected to any internet source, resulting in endless spinner on screen.
    I'm not sure if there's any workaround solution without turning on Hot Spot... please let me know if you found any.

  • Cannot use Airplay from iPhone 6 / iOS 8.0.2 to AppleTV

    I have an ATV3, which I have updated today to the latest OS version. I also have an iPhone 6 on iOS 8.0.2, an iPad 3 on iOS 7.1.2 and an iMac still on Mountain Lion
    Today I tried for the first time to use Airplay to connect the iPhone to the ATV, but it just simply won't connect. When I select it in the Airplay menu and then press "Done", after a few seconds pause the list of Airplay devices refreshes, and the connection to the iPhone isn't made. I've tried both with and without Airplay Mirroring from the phone but it makes no difference.
    I can stream quite happily from both the iPad and iMac. I've also reset the ATV to factory settings and started again, and it's made no difference. So is this an iOS 8.0.2 bug? Anyone else having issues with Airplay on this OS version?

    I am having this problem too on my iPhone 6 and iPad air both on 8.0.2.  No app will link with my Airplay devices, but my computer sees them just fine.
    I have found a way to enable it though.  Reset your ATV or Airport, wait 4-5 minute until it fully loads and pings it's services, then bring up Airport Utility on your iOS device.  Once it finds it use the pull-up tray.
    Not the most elegant solution, but it worked for me just now.  Not sure how long it will last though...

  • I cannot get subtitles on my new smart tv. I've read all the solutions online and none of them work. When I try to airplay the BBC i player by mirroring my iphone 4 the subtitles disappear when I change from iphone to appletv.

    I cannot get subtitles on my new smart tv. I've read all the solutions online and none of them work. When I try to airplay the BBC i player by mirroring my iphone 4 the subtitles disappear when I change from iphone to apple tv.

    That's because the BBC iPlayer app uses basic AirPlay to show the content, this means the original content is sent to the Apple TV for it to decode rather than mirroring the screen of the iPad where the subtitles are added.

  • Trouble with AirPlay and streaming from iTunes when on same wireless band

    I was having this problem with AirPlay before, but after the last update now I'm having the same problem with iTunes streaming. (Apple TV 2nd gen)
    The problem is this: if I try to stream something via AirPlay or my iTunes library and both devices are on the same wireless band (I have a dual-band cisco E2500 router), for example, the 5ghz band, then streaming will be extremely slow and choppy to the point of losing connection. If however, one of the devices is on a different band (my MacBook on the 2.4ghz and the AppleTV on the 5ghz, for example), then everything works fine.
    I've already upgraded my router's firmware, so that didn't help.
    Has anyone else run into this and been able to resolve the issue?

    Hi jack4120,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has a list of things to check for issues using AirPlay:
    iTunes: Troubleshooting AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5209
    Troubleshooting performance issues
    Wi-Fi Connection
    If you are experiencing intermittent playback or significant network lag with AirPlay, it could be due to a weak Wi-Fi connection, interference, or the distance between the Wi-Fi router and your AirPlay-enabled device.
    Ensure that other devices aren't trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
    Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
    Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
    If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
    Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.
    Cheers,
    - Ari

  • Airplay from iPhone to Airport Express - no sound?

    We have two of the new Mac Minis, one new Airport Express and 4 iPhones in the house - and we can use Airplay from both PC´s to the Airport Express hooked up to the stereo - works fine!
    And we can se the Airplaybutton on the iPhones and the name of the Airport Express - but we don´t get any sound when we push the button and it turns blue?
    We have rebooted alle the devices, made restores, reconnected - but no sound? I just don´t get it?
    Message was edited by: Joost40

    Same here:
    - iPhone 4 with iOS4.2;
    - Airport Express with latest firmware;
    - Airplay on iTunes 10.1 with Macbook Pro works fine on my home stereo equipment;
    - installation of iOS4.2 went fine;
    - rebooted already both iPhone and Airport Express;
    - Apple support told me to restore original settings on my iPhone, which I didn´t do but very much doubt would help anyway (the lady working for Apple Support didn't even know what "Airplay" was).
    I think we are facing a bug and must wait for an Airport Express (or even iOS4.2) software update.

    This is the iPad forum. Do you have a question about iPad? If not, I'll ask that your post be reassigned.
    BTW, you will need to provide more detail than that for someone to help. How are you connecting the two? What have you already done to troubleshoot? What was the result?
