Hard Drive appears to be failing.  It keeps erasing data.  I have reformated several times.  Anybody have thi problem and what did you do about it

You can get a 32 GB card for $15 from Amazon.  The internal flash drive in the camera is 32GB so I can fix problem with a very low cost.  It's possible to select which storage device to use so this will bypass internal drive.  I believe I have found the problem I was having... I chose the wrong drive to view my still pictures.  I normally use video only and am not used to selecting storage device ahead of when viewing input.  So all is well for now.  Thanks for your responses.

  • FYI: MS-7125 BIOS has problem with Hard Drives withNative Command Queuing (NCQ)

For those the have messed my two treads on which both ended up being cause by K8N Neo4 BIOS problem with HD's with NCQ.
Will wonders never cease? MSI Support finally conceded the BIOS has a problem with Hard Drives with NCQ and they have forwarded the problem to their programming department.
However, do not look for any results for above two weeks.
    Roger

The problem that this thread has been trying to follow is the incapability of the nVidia RAID Controller with Serial ATA Type 2.5 drives.  I know the threads has been hard to follow and part of that is because when I started the thread I had what appeared to be three totally un related problems, but all three were traced down the common problem of the incapability of RAID Controller with Serial ATA Type 2.5 drives.
The title of this thread is MS-7125 BIOS has problem with Hard Drives with Native Command Queuing(NCQ).  The statement was true at the time it was written and has nothing to do with memory problems.
Sense the thread was started MSI has fixed the BIOS part of the problem, but we have sense learned the nVidia RAID Controller Command software and its driver has problems too.  I have been working MSI Support, they have been using me to test pre-beta BIOS and Drivers soon.   Of the testing I have done the pre-beta BIOS worked and the Pre-beta 32-bit driver works.  I am assuming that the latest BIOS V1.B had as part of it included fixes was the needed fixes for working with the nVidia RAID Controller as I have test the pre-beta RAID Driver with BIOS Version V1.B as the Raid array function fine windows XP Pro 32-bit Edition.  As I have had no communications with MSI support of over a week now I am hoping for a release of 32-bit and 64-bit RAID Drivers.   But, nobody should get the hopes up, because through other backdoor sources nVidia is having a hell of a time.  One reason for this I heard is that the nVidia RAID Controller is fully software, no hardware other than the electrical drive interfaces.  Their problem started when they tried using the old 32-bit code Controller with new 64-bit hardware drivers and now they are having to totally rewrite the controller core in 64-bit code.  But, knowing my source, it may all be fiction.
The RAID Array you say is up and running, are the drives full specification SATA 2.5 in other words do the both have 3Gb/s speed and NCQ.  If you send me the full part numbers I will check the specifications a get back to you.  Because if you have nVidia RAID 0 Array you working you will be the first to have done it and there about 230 people around the world that would like to know how you did it, even MSI, who's pre-beta nVidia RAID Drivers that will work with BIOS V1.B for 32-bit Windows only and nothing for Windows XP 64, would like to know.

  • Working photographer needs help with hard drives and raid O decisions

Hi new here and also new to Mac well almost new been 20 years since i had a mac. i have a Mac Pro Book and this led to ordering the MacPro since I am a working photographer i made a complete switch in platforms so i have some questions and such but I did place a order on Friday for a 2.66 4gbs of Ram , 2 500 gb hard drive and a 30 in monitor and of course the ATI 1900 XT card so yes i am waiting like many for that card.
I put initial 4gb of ram since running CS2 will at least take a max of 3gb's in the memory cache . i plan on getting 2gbs more from OWC since that seems to be the only 3rd party ram at the moment that is working correctly from reading some of the threads here. Having 6gbs is a no brainer really given the amount of Raw processing that i do along with PS work plus having e-mail and other apps open at the same time. The ram to me is the easy part although expensive . My biggest issue is what to do with the 2 hard drive slots and Raid O or not but I will start a thread on that. But i will have 6gbs total for now and the bottom line is you can never have enough ram still holds true.
Now on to my diliemma with hard drives. I did have a raid O scsi 10k rapture and and 10 k scratch on my Dell box and I am just not sure what to do here. i ordered the 2 500 gb hard drive and I may just put them on the storage side of things than get 2 WD 150gb 10 k Sata drives. Now i could Raid O them for 300 gb and get a performace boast that way or i could keep them seperate and put everything on 1 150 drive and ue the second for scratch only. What i don't know is what Mac perfers and what works better. Not worried so much about failure of drives, thats just life in the big city stuff and you just have backups. What i more worried about is performance versus a waste . seems to me that Raid O may not even be needed with these new Intel boxes with all the horsepower going on. Now the other think I notice is the WD 150gb 10 k drives are 1.5 and not 3.0 so is it really faster than the 7200 3.0 single hard drives. I read barefeats shoot out and it seems just getting the right drives in 7200 and Raid O them maybe the answer.
Okay i am not the biggest geek on the planet but I do know my stuff but this is a area that i look for more knowledge on this. So if i can get some sound advice in this area. i know there are many photographers out there like me pushing hundreds of images that could use the same advice. Now let's leave the money end out , folks sometimes think more with there wallet than what works best not that I am opposed to saving money but after spending over 7 k already on this system it becomes a moot point. LOL
    www.guymancusophoto.com

Ok your question is if you should RAID O the two 150GB Raptors or not.
I think it was wise for you to get a couple of them for a boot drive with "Time Machine" coming in the next version of Mac OS X. The second drive would make a excellent bootable backup and eliminating downtime if a boot drive dies on you one morning.
In fact any boot drive cloning software that is Mac Intel ready now would do you good.
Now Barefeats has run some tests, and I can pretty much back up what they say from my own experience.
Mac OS X and apps can be helped only so much by a faster boot drive, and a single 10,000 RPM Raptor is enough, RAID O a pair is overkill.
If you install everything on the boot Raptor and keep your space hogging files (except iTunes) in new folders on another drive, even a 7,200 RPM 500GB, the two drives combined is faster as there is nearly no wait. Both drives can be accessed at the same time. Keeping the boot drive slim keeps the stylus (arm) moving as little as possible to get all the small reads/writes Mac OS X needs.
I RAID O-ed my boot drives because 74GB was the largest they had at the time, so combining them gave me speed and larger storage. I hardly use the speed, it only comes in handy if by rare chance I duplicate a 20GB folder, then I can do it in half the time of a 7,200 RPM drive.
Some of the drawbacks of a RAID O set, especially as a boot drive is that I have to auto-clone the whole set to a external drive regularly (I actually do a couple). Since the data path is separated with a RAID O, any drive failure results in total data loss.
So if you RAID O those 150GB Raptors, your going to have to clone 300GB to a external drive (or another internal) regularly, like once a week. This will take considerable time and you can't use the machine while the cloning process is going on. Sure auto-cloning software like DeJaVu can be used at night/weekends, but why bother cloning more than you have to for no big speed increase?
However if your messing with huge Photoshop files that spill over your CS2 3GB RAM limit (you need to have a "scratch" thats as fast as RAM), duplicating large files and other heavy duty drive work, then a boot RAID O will come in handy. Just remember your initial performance of 185 MB p/s will drop about 20-25% when those drives are 3/4 filled. Still 140 MB p/s is extremely good and a no worry situation.
What is worrysome is anything below 80MB p/s (I'm talking uncached 4K write speeds under X-Bench) with a new boot drive and then as time elaspes that boot drive gets filled up and loses half or more of it's inital speed. 30 MB p/s is really slow. Beachball H&LL.

Do Erase W/Zero in Disk Utility all new drives before laying data on them. Drives get subjected to shock which causes bad sectors on the drive. Driver software uses your data as a guinea pig to test the sectors (which you might not be able to recover the file). Zeroing does this without your data, rewriting the bad sector map so your writes are much improved, OS is more stable. etc.

  • IMac having very low reliability with Hard Drive

Hi, I recently had to replace the hard drive in my Early 2008 iMac. I replaced it with a 2 TB Seagate (pretty reliable) but my computer has been stuttering lately. It'll be fine for a couple days, and then it will just die (not permanently, just until I reboot).
Anyway, I was trying to save a document, and Pages froze with a spinning wheel after I clicked "save as." I was ultimately forced to force quit and lose my document. I then went to search activity monitor in spotlight, but it froze too. I went through stacks to get to activity monitor, and it froze too when I went to look at disk activity. Mail also froze and forced me to quit it. Only after a hard shutdown (as it got stuck trying to shut down) did my computer go back to normal.
Today, this happened again, and I'm becoming worried that I'm going to have to buy a new computer. I'm going to verify the disk tonight to look for problems, but I was wondering if you all could diagnose the problem.
    Thank You!
On a side note: Mail has been unable to send any emails, and I've had trouble with some servers. I've had to redo them and they've worked, but at this time I can't send messages through mail on ANY outgoing server I have (multiple email addresses too).

The HDD corruption is a symptom. It's caused by the iMac locking up and having to be booted. When mine locks, the HDD runs constantly while the screen is frozen or a solid color. I'm forced to power it off.
Unfortunately, you are in the same boat as many others, and your issues are heat related. For me it was the HDD, then burn marks on the LCD, then GPU failures and now OS X is just unusable.
I am able to run Windows through bootcamp since my GPU recovers in Windows but not OS X. I have the fans cranked to 6000rpm and it gets to 150 - 170 degrees then things get weird. Screen flashing, spinning beach ball, solid colors, graphic distortion.
I've cleaned the vents, and fans and confirmed air flow. Be sure to try and keep your temps under control and check with Apple Store and let me know how it goes. I think mine is a goner.

  • [Athlon64] RS480 troubles still, Hard drive?

I still haven't got my RS480 working properly yet.  I gave up on the built in NIC.  Here are my current problems.  Media player gets high CPU usage when playing a cd or streaming from the internet.  It makes the song pause/skip.  Windows CD player plays fine.  Half-Life2 took 4 hours to install then at least an hour to decode.  It plays aweful.
I tried some test programs today.  One called Burnin, seemed to get no errors except read errors on the CD (i had a blank one in by mistake).  When I did the H?Tach hard drive test, I got a 1MB/s rather than 40+ for an ATA drive.  I am using and IDE drive with standard bios settings but SATA disabled.
Also I noticed that the IRQ10 is used by both the X200 graphics and the AC97 audio.  When I disable the audio card things don't improve.
    Any suggestions?

    @fenmcconnell
Just a follow up. I haven't had any trouble with my secondary drive switching back to PIO mode. What fix it was changing my drive cable (Mad Dog 18" round 2 connector cable) and deleting and letting Windows reinstall my Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller.
Evidently my problem was that Windows detected parity errors and kept lowering my transfer rate from UDMA Mode 6. It kept taking it a notch down each time and eventually I was at the lowest transfer mode of PIO. Just changing the cable didn't fix it because although the errors disappeared Windows doesn't work in reverse and speed up the transfer rate. So the only way to clear the problem was to remove the controller device and let Windows reinstall it.
I don't know if this is what you are experiencing at all. If you've already tried removing the Standard IDE Controller driver and have Windows redetect it, then you could also try a new 80 pin IDE cable, try a regular cable if you have a round one. Also, do you have another device on the same channel, i.e. DVD burner? Double check your jumper settings on the back of the HD too.
It may be silly but you could also try putting the HD on the secondary channel as Master.
If you've tried all of that, try reseting CMOS or at least put the default settings for IDE devices back to the defaults (except for SATA controller, leave that off).
I suspect that its hardware settings instead of software. So I'd pursue that angle first. Is the drive new or at least proven to work in other systems? You may want to pick up a second drive and install Windows on it to see what happens, maybe you can determine that the drive is bad and RMA it.
Sorry, didn't mean to ramble, its just I've go a lot of advice to share since my recent experience with the RS480M2.

  • Boot message: problem with hard drive detected. Slow loading of windows 7

    Good Day
I am having a problem with my hard drive, everytime it boots these days it starts with a message: Warning: a problem with the hard drive has been detected, followed by an extremely slow loading of windows. then once in windows it gives me Anothet message
the messsage says hard drive failure imminent you should back up you data etc.
    My specs are:
    Intel core 2 duo e8400 3.0 ghz
    4 gig ddr3 transcend
    1 tb seagate 7200.12
giga byte nvidia 9800 gt 1 gig ddr3
    Please help lots of data.

    Another option:
Take your hard drive out and slave it into another KNOWN WORKING PC.
Back-up your data immediately. Slow boot usually indicates that the drive is going to die. (Check your warranty!)
Then, run "chkdsk /r" from the host PC to check the failing drive. (It is good to match OSes if you can.)

  • Time Machine back up with hard drive connected to D-Link DIR-655

Recently D-Link updated the share port utility with a mac version. I have heard that Time Machine does not easily recognize network shared hard drives but to my surprise this morning it did. With using the new software and hooking up my hard drive to my router Time machine recognized it! This is great since I dont have to buy a Time Capsule now.

First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
It's your choice, of course, but I wouldn't trust my primary backups to it.

  • Issues with Hard Drive & Disk Repair

I keep getting the following when I try to verify my hard drive with the Disk Utility:
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
It won't let me go on to repair the disk and I can't find my Install/Restore disc anywhere. Is there a simple step-by-step way of fixing this?
    Many Thanks
    BH

    Ben
Something to try if you can't find your Install disc is a Safe Boot: see Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode and Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?. You should be aware that because of the disk checking, Safe Boot Takes Longer Than Normal Startup.
Safe Boot will run a full disk check, and re-run if it finds anything to repair. If it completes the booting process, it will have repaired your disk.
If your machine halts during Safe Boot, you have something seriously wrong with your disk: Mac OS X 10.4: Computer shuts down during Safe Boot.
If the latter happens, remember this quote from the Disk Utility screen:
    • If Disk Utility cannot make repairs, try other disk repair programs or back up your data and erase the volume. One popular Repair Program is DiskWarrior.

  • Can't load Tiger - Problem with hard drive or other?  What to do next?

I would like some advice on installing Tiger on an IMac PowerPC G4 (700 MHZ machine). This machine has 512 MB SDRAM. The machine is currently running Mac OS 10.3.9. Thus far I have been unable to install Tiger.
The machine is 5 years old and was run in Classic OS 9 for several years. There have been no material problems since upgrading to 10.3.9 several years ago.
I have been Installing with Archive. The install does 100% of the Checking Installation DVD but very soon after entering the Preparing for Installation/Verifying Destination Volume (the task bar has only filled about 5%) it kicks out of the install saying that there were errors in installing the software. No further information is provided.
I have disconnected all external devices and run the Tiger disk utilities. I receive the message that an “Invalid catalog record type” has been encountered and that “Volume Check has failed.”
“Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit”
    “1 HFS volume checked”
“1 volume could not be repaired due to error”
At this time, I do not know what steps to take next.
Should I get a stronger utility program to try to mend the hard drive?
Should I conclude that the Tiger update is not feasible given the age of my machine?
I don’t have an external drive to load everything off of the iMac to do an Erase and Install. I am reluctant to do this anyway in case this will not fix the above issue?
Any advice would be most welcome.
    700 Mhz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thank you for your reply.
I found the article you sent me to so fascinating with the pictures.
Sad to say, that this is completely beyond me from a mechanical and personal dexterity perspective. I actually only knew what two items were in the tools required list. I think I could only get through two steps: set imac on soft surface (but not wool blanket) and take the bottom off.
Therefore, I think the next step is to go to the Mac store with my problem description and the imac and see what they can do.
Based on reading the article, I think I should also have more memory installed if in fact, they are going to take the bottom off at the Apple store. Would you agree?
Alternatively, it occurs to me to simply keep using the imac in 10.3.9 and save for a new laptop since I'm now running wireless network and it would be fun to have another laptop accessible around the house. Or maybe save for a new desktop...
    Any thoughts?

  • Hard Drive Check

    Hey users,
I'm new around this forum and just want some quick help.
Just to inform everyone, I already tried contacting Apple but after being put on hold for an hour, and finally finding someone to talk to, the call hung up after three minutes, so I don't think I'd want to do that again...
Anyway, I'd like to install OS X Yosemite, but it tells me there are S.M.A.R.T errors on my Hard Drive. I've tried reinstalling my OS X, and everything else I've seen online, but nothing has fixed these errors, so it's come down to me trying to figure out a way I can bypass this screen and force OS X Yosemite to install on my Macbook Pro (2012). Is there any way to do this?

You stated; "so it's come down to me trying to figure out a way I can bypass this screen and force OS X Yosemite to install on my Macbook Pro (2012)."
You don't want to do that.
If you have disk errors then the installation of Yosemite will probably be bad. Fix your disk drive. Which will probably take replacement of the disk drive.
I suggest you backup everything and then make an appointment to have Apple look at it. They will tell you what they problem is with it.
If you ask them nicely they may even upgrade it for you.
