Troubles with HP OfficeJet 6500 E710n-z on Arch Linux

Recently, I have tried to use my printer after five months break. It used to run smoothly on Arch Linux with hplip. However, now, I have not managed to make it print properly with hplip again. This is my configuration, as seen from the CUPS web interface:
Driver: HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z hpijs, 3.12.11 (color, 2-sided printing)
    Connection: hp:/net/Officejet_6500_E710n-z?ip=192.168.1.4
After trying to print some test page, the jobs listing in the CUPS web interface showed me a error message "Filter failed". I deleted my .cups and .hplip directories in my home folder and reinstalled cups and hplip. The same symptoms appeared again after restarting and a fresh installation.

My Arch system is up-to-date. I heard that it might have become necessary to install the hplip-plugin somewhen in the last month for some HP printer models. If I understand the table at the bottom of http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo … 10n-z.html correctly, then the hplip-plugin is neither required nor available for my printer model. I tested also installing it from AUR, just because it was worth a try (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/hplip-plugin/), but this made matters worse, having my printer to madly produce almost-empty paper with some crap characters at each page top. As expected, the hplip-plugin was a dead-end, and I uninstalled it to continue some experimentation with printing test pages (all on the same page, mind the trees!). Resuming the printer, CUPS prints
***** Unable to open the initial device, quitting.
Looking at the number of hits on Google, this seems to be one of the favourite error messages. I looked at the output in /var/cups/error_log

Indeed, some errors show up. I find it strange that ghostscript is called with a parameter -sDeviceModel="HP Color LaserJet 2600n" -dDuplex=true even though I clearly have an inkjet printer and no laser printer – and also specified the correct printer model. Also later, I can see the two lines

which to the best of my knowledge indicates some internal mess. Raising the debug level in cups.conf did not tell me anything new.
Notably, using the hpcups driver at least makes the printer print pages properly, but the wonderful (mind the trees) duplex-mode seems to only be available when using hpijs when selecting the PPD file in the add printer wizard. That is why I want to stay with the driver mentioned above.
The trouble for me is that the printing pipeline is so complex and so many components are involved that I have no real good starting point to where exactly post bug reports. I would appreciate if some fellows with the same printer and the same errors could confirm my description. Or even point out how to get that organism to paint ink properly on the paper. Any ideas where to start? Or references to better resources regarding the combo of HP OfficeJet 6500 E710n-z and Arch? Is it just an regression bug and will be fixed? Is my system corrupted in some way? There is lots of open questions I don't quite feel able to answer all by myself. Any hints for troubleshooting appreciated!
Edit:
After some more reading and troubleshooting, I have filed the following two bug reports at hplip:

SCAN ISSUE SOLVED!!!!
I have an HP Photosmart 6500a Plus printer that is connected via USB to a less than 1 year old Dell XPS 8300 tower running Win 7 64bit Home Premium Edition.  The print function worked fine but scans would halt mid-way through the scan and eventually the software would indicate that it had lost connection with the scanner.
After EXTENSIVE testing, I determined that the problem was with the Dell tower and NOT THE PRINTER.  I hooked the printer up to a Dell Inspiron mni-tower running Vista and had NO PROBLEM scanning.  I hooked the printer up to a Gateway laptop running Win 7 Pro and had NO PROBLEM scanning.
On a hunch, I inserted a POWERED USB hub in between the Dell XPS 8300 tower and the HP Photosmart 6500a Plus and was rewarded with a, first time ever on the XPS 8300, complete and flawless scan.
I surmise that the HP Photosmart 6500a Plus was not getting the required voltage from the USB on the Dell XPS 8300 tower and that was causing the scan to fail.
WOOHOO!
Been chasing this one for several months...

  • Trouble with a wired connection on my fresh Arch Linux Install

I am a new Arch Linux user. I used to use Ubuntu exclusively, but I'm to the point where I can no longer stand a lot of the issues with the new development and Canonical. Anyways....
I have a Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop with an RTL8110SC (Module R8169) Ethernet port. (Pardon me if my terminology is wrong; please correct me if it is so I can learn? ) During the install process with the CD that I made, I had no issues connecting to the Internet. However, whenever I boot into my install, there is no connection. I've tried pinging various web pages and nothing will happen. I know that my hardware is compatible, but I do not know what to do next. I've tried everything under the Wiki's Beginner's Guide and the Network Configuration Guide.
I just realised after I wrote this top portion that it no longer is connecting via CD, either. Pinging is giving me errors about no packets being received.
Please help me with this matter? I would love to start using Arch Linux!

Ping is a very basic command that is fundamental to debugging networks at the lowest levels.

What we can tell so far..
    You have an Ethernet Interface.
    You have an Ethernet Address.
You cannot look up domain names (bad)
We are trying to see if you can see other computers if you know their address.  This will tell us if it is a DNS or a routing problem

  • Can Printer over network but can't scan over network with Officejet 6500 E710n

Got an odd problem... I can print all day via my wireless network, I can even ping my printer's IP with no issues.
I can't scan at all, it keeps giving me connection related error messages (Scanner Unreachable, etc). I checked the "Update IP Address" tool and the IP address was correct. So I figured I would install on a different computer.
I installed using the software from this website (I have never installed this HP printer on this computer, I always did eprinting from this computer), it worked perfectly, it found the printer almost instantly. Installation worked perfect with no issues, errors, etc.
Printed the test page perfectly but I still can't scan over the network, I tried both clicking on "HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z" and clicking on both "Scan a document or photo" and "Activate Scan to Computer" and also I get a connection error if I try the "HP Scan" software.
I ran the "HP Home Network Diagnostic Utility" but it can't find my printer (odd that it found it to install the software and I can print/ping it all day).
I also ran the "HP Scan Diagnostic Utility 4.2" and it DID find the printer... It also got past the "Connectivity" and "Device Manager" steps and put a check next to them.
It then failed on the "Windows (WIA) Scan" step. I skip it and it fails on the "HP Twian Scan" after giving me a connection related error message. It will not let me continue the test.
I have restarted both computers and printer multiple times. I am running Windows 7 on my laptop and Windows XP on my desktop.

I suggest uninstalling the full feature software from both PCs and re-installing and configuring the software on both.
Are you using the HP Solution center to scan? It is in Dutch, but the images are the same as what you should see in a correctly installed full feature software package.

  • Mac: Officejet 6500 e710n wireless connectivity troubles

    Printer: HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z
    Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5
I've successfully been printing wirlessly with my Offiject 6500 e710n for over a year. Connectivity comes and goes but I've always been able to reconnect them by either rebooting the printer or reconnecting them via the IP address of the printer.
However it's no longer working. I've tried uninstalling the printer drivers and reinstalling and now the printer cannot be located wirelessly on the network at all (despite the fact the printer's wireless report says all connections fine). I've tried the following:
    - manually add printer using the IPv4 address --> says device not found
    - type printer's IP address into my web browser -->says failed to connect as the server is not responding
    - connect via usb to printer --> recognises printer, sets up the wireless network, says disconnect and then it disappears again and says device not found
I'm starting to run out of ideas... Any suggestions to help me reconfigure/ re-install my printer so it works again would be greatly appreciated!
    This question was solved.

  • Is there HP software that will allow an Officejet 6500 E710n-z to work under OS X 10.9 Mavericks?

My Macbook's currently running OS X 10.8.5 Mtn. Lion.  I've been hesitant to upgrade to Mavericks for fear of what it might break.  I just saw the
posting by HP employee Vanricker, "Update - HP Scan application - Grayscale fix - OS X 10.9 Mavericks", at http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/Update-HP-Scan-application-Grayscale-fix-OS-X... But it doesn't list the Officejet 6500 E710n-z.  It does, however, say it applies to the Officejet 6600 and 6700.  I'd have posted my question as a reply to that posting, but in the 8 months since that was posted, there have been 10 requests for further help that were posted as replies, and not a single one of them was answered.  So instead I'm submitting this as a brand new post in the hope that somebody knowledgeable at HP will notice my question.
Can the Officejet 6500 E710n-z work with OS X Mavericks?  If so, do I need to download new software from HP?  If yes, what's the URL for that software?

Yup, it will work with Mavericks.  Here is how I recommend you proceed:
Uninstall the existing HP software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
    Restart your Mac.
    Now reset the printing system:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
Do not install specific HP software for your printer.  Scan from the printer using the Image Capture app in your Applications folder.
Click once on the scanner on the left side, then click on Show Details along the bottom. Along the right side you will see LOTS of options for scanning and saving.

  • Officejet 6500 e710n Solution Center for Windows 8.1

I originally purchased my Officejet 6500 E710n and loaded it on my Windows XP computer, no problems.  I recently purchased a new Windows 8.1 computer and wanted to use the above mentioned printer with it.  First I tried to install it on my new 8.1 PC with the setup CD that came with the Officejet 6500.  Install CD setup told me it doesn't support my new 8.1 PC.  Then went to HP downloads and downloaded latest driver software with Ful Features that supports Windows 8.1.  Software downloaded and installed on new 8.1 PC.  However, I can only see the Full Featured Solution Center the very first tisme I open up the printer.  The very first time I open it, it gives me all Full Feature options.  Then after I close the printer and open it a second time, all I have is the Basic Print Feature with no Solution Center and no Full Features.  The only way I can get it back up is to uninstall and reinstall driver, but it only works the very first time I open up the printer.
I'm not very computer literate, but I don't understand why it works right only the first time.  I could sure use some input on solutions for this issue.  Hopefully if there is a solution it's simple for me to fix.
    Thanks.

As listed in my previous post, please clarify what behavior you experience once clicking the HP Officejet 6500 E710 icon to open the Printer Assistant.
Would you see any specific screen, any specific behavior or any specific error message?
May you see no responce at all once cliking the icon?
Please clarify accordingly, in order to resolve an issue it will help knowing its sympthoms..

  • Officejet 6500 E710n Moved network problems

Hi, I previously posted on being unable to modify existing devices in windows 7. the post is here:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/officejet-6500-E710n-Moved-network-how-...
The fix fixed the printer however now when we go to use the scanner with in the HP software it says device can not be found. It also used to give the option to scan when you double click on the device.
PC configuration has not changed and you can access the scan function through the web console. The only change there has been is the change in network address of PC's and printer.
Any help would be gratefully recieved!
    Cheers

    Hi cookiesz219,
I found this in the user guide for HP Officejet E710n-z available here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02519721.pdf
    Could you try:
    1. On the printer control panel, touch > Setup, then touch Fax Setup then Basic Fax Setup
    2. Turn on Auto Answer
    3. Set Rings to Answer to the number of rings.
    I hope this helps.

  • Trouble Installing HP Officejet 6500 on a MacBook Running OS 10.4.11

I'm trying to help a friend install the new HP all in one Officejet 6500 she bought.
We've followed the directions in the start up guide--plugged the USB cable from the printer into the laptop, put the HP install disk in, double clicked on the install icon.
The installer gets through the first few steps--asks us to agree to the EULA, pops up a box with the printer and we select the printer to install, takes us to the easy or custom install page.
No matter whether we select easy or custom, when we click on the install button, nothing happens. No little "I'm thinking" color wheel. No install bar. Nothing.
Any help on what we need to do would be great.

Depending on the age of the printer, drivers for it could have been pre-installed
in the OS X already. For my all-in-one HP Officejet (5610xi) instead of trusting
the older drivers and included software in the box (last year) I went to HP's
support pages and found a rather large download of newer drivers. That worked.
{Though I do not recall now, if the printer had to be turned on (or off) before
installing the drivers and attached to the computer, some of these kinds of
steps are important to follow exactly as per the instructions. I have more
    than one brand of printer, so by memory alone, I will not cite an example.}
So, the drivers in the box may not be the best available; so perhaps that is a
part of the issue. Another one may be in not following their setup instructions
exactly and to the letter for Mac OS X. The Quick Setup paper in the HP packet
usually is enough for the Mac; unless they omitted that from your package.
A few weeks ago, I performed a fully new installation of everything to a zeroed
hard drive; including re-install of the large file of HP drivers I downloaded from
their support site. Rather easier to navigate than discuss, the Mac OSX ones
are not hard to find for most available and some older all-in-one units online.
You may have to find and remove just those items installed by the original
HP CD included with the Officejet 6500; or maybe not. I tried to not install
their older drivers based on the date of the files in their disk. In a few cases
using existing old drivers may be almost inescapable; but in newer OS X
versions, those old ones are problematic. Do Not get the latest Snow Leopard
drivers, they are listed and linked from Apple Support> Downloads. Instead,
go to HP Support and get the correct ones for the unit you have there, and be

  • How can I print Double A4 with HP Officejet 6500? I only get the first page...

I try to print a large photo in "landscape" Double A4 with my HP Officejet 6500.
I can select "Double A4" to print but I only get the first page. So I only have  half a photo.
    What should I do?

You can not attach a multi-page .pdf document to Pages.
Just create a folder in which you enclose both your Pages letter and the .pdf.

  • OS 10.6.4 compatibility with HP OfficeJet 6500 & Epson Artisan 700

Just purchased MacBook Pro and upgraded iMAC and Mac Pro on my local network to OS 10.6.4. iMAC is connected to local network via Ethernet, other computers and printers HP OfficeJet 6500 and Epson Artisan 700 connected via wireless. All went pretty good except for the two printers. You need to install Rosetta for some 3rd party software to work. It's on the OS 10.6.3 disk.
The HP OfficeJet 6500 is new. In the printer box was a notice to NOT use the enclosed CD's if using OS 10.6. HP manual was terrible. Key was getting the local network operating and then using HP printer keypad to select SETUP/NETWORK SETUP/WIRELESS SETUP WIZARD. It automatically found the name of my local network and then asked me to enter the WEP Key Code of my local network. For some reason the WIRELESS SETUP WIZARD didn't show up for the first day. Now have access to the printer from all computers - even duplex mode works.
Can't say the same for the Artisan 700 we've had for one year and was working good with OS 10.5. The only computer that could not access the Artisan 700 was the one connected via Ethernet to the local network (other computers wireless). Tried downloading Epson drivers, Network setup S/W, etc. Epson says there is a problem with TCP/IP connection and are "working on the problem" - in the mean time use Bonjour driver. I installed print drivers from OS 10.6.3 disk and then did Apple software update. Don't know why but suddenly Bonjour driver showed up and the Artisan printer was recognized by the computer connected to network via ethernet. Also had to manually set up the Artisan printer again using the printer keypad to select local network and enter the WEP Key Code. Duplex printing does not work though. Year ago when we bought the printer had to call Epson who after 1.5 hr on phone got duplex working, but didn't know why or how. I'd taken notes and tried same thing, but didn't work this time.
Perhaps this will help other people deciding to do an OS upgrade.

Thanks for response on the Epson duplex mode problem. I downloaded the updater, but it would NOT open after I installed it. The install created a second file called InkJet Printer 2 (original was w/o the 2). The updater tool is v 8.33 on the one just downloaded while the existing one was v 6.66, so definitely a later version. The v 6.66 gave message "unexpected quit", so it would not open either. Got same results on iMAC and MAC PRO. Do I delete the original InkJet printer file before installing the new download? Was afraid to as afraid driver would not work at all. What am I doing wrong???
When select duplex mode in the print window get message "duplexer not installed" on both computers.

  • Color management with HP officejet 6500 E709 serie

Can you pls tell me what my color management settings should be set to on mty HP officejet 6500 E 709 series? It is connected to an HP Elitebook 6930p.  All cartridges are new but none of the "red/pink" colors print.  Thank you.

I have the same problem - no idea what to do to correct.  Yesterday I replaced the magenta cartridge and within an hour it was telling me the cartridge was empty.  Turned it off and today when I turned it back on it sees the magenta cartridge as full.  Useless as it is tho, with the colors all pink.

  • Scanning with HP Officejet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - E709n using Windows 7 Pro editition

I have had this printer for many years and it was fully operational only for the first two years of its link to my computer.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software many times with no success.  The Printer/Scan doctor does not solve the problem  and gives an error HP Twain Scan.  The HP Scan Flow Manager also says that software components are missing The printer works fine but the scanner in the solution center always responds with a error code saying installation is incomplete, "reinstall HP Photosmart software that came with the device and try scanning again" .  The extended error information is  4,[2,0,80040154), (0,0,0),(3,56,0)] Another computer, my wife's laptop, running Windows 8 was operational until the end of May 2015, and she is also getting this error code with her computer.  This has got to be the most annoying all-in-one I have ever used.  I have a Canon all in one at work that I have used with the laptop and the all operating features are mindless...it just works.  HP software must have compatibility issues either related to operating systems updates or security software.  My computer uses AVG, the laptop uses McAffee and beither scanner operates with this printer. I need to get this scanner operational!

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that you cannot scan with your HP Officejet 6500 wireless printer on Windows 7 and 8. I am happy to look into this issue for you!  Some questions for you:  Are you able to make copies with the printer from the scanner glass? Loading and Copying 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inch) Plain Paper. (This way we can verify that the hardware is functional.)Do you see any error messages on the printer's display screen, or blinking lights?  In the meantime, please take a look through this scanning guide, An 'HP Cue Scanning Flow component has encountered a problem and needs to be closed' Error Displays for HP Deskjet, Officejet, and Photosmart All-in-Ones. Hope to hear from you soon!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

  • Apple macbook air compatibility with HP Officejet 6500 Wireless

    Two questions
    1. If I buy a new current model  MacBook Air, will it work with my HP Officejet 6500 Wireless printer?
    2. Sometimes when I power up the printer, it can take as long as five minutes to register "ready." Why the erratic time to go online?
    Thanks
    TT95

Thanks for your swift reply to the Apple/HP compatibility question.  Trust it will work when I buy MacBook Air. The HP app available at iTunes store helped us make our older Apple IPad print compatible even though the HP 6500 Wireless is not equipped with AirPrint.
Regarding slowness of HP 6500 to reach "Ready" stage for printing. This is a printer for home use, so it not on a network. It always eventually prints.
    Your help is much appreciated.

  • How do I print #12 envelopes with HP Officejet 6500 E709n Series printer?

When I try to print 4.75" x 11" (#12 envelopes) on my HP Officejet 6500 E709n Series printer, it gives an error msg. and will not print. Is there a work around for this, or do I have to use #10 size and make it do?
    Win XP pro, MS word.

You could try creating 'paper' the size of the #12 envelope, and try that possibly.
