Troubles with TNSNAMES.ORA - with solution

Hi There
I've had the problems described and solved in other entries of the forum.
But then I ran in to a new one, the product would only read part of the file..!
I've found that the problem apparently is that if there is an entry with a host that is not available then the product stops reading the file.
I removed the entry and then it continued until the next unavailable server, which i then deleted. Finally I had a full TNS list in the product. But when the other servers becomes available again I have to add them to TNSNAMES.ORA, so I hope Oracle will fix it.
A part from that a fine product.
/regards Ole Jørgensen

Thats strange, as we do not ping every host to make sure it is available. is this a 10.2 Oracle Home?

• Getting host, port from the tnsnames.ora with the service name

Hi.
I think that I asked a similar question yesterday. I want to ask if there is a way to get host and port from the tnsnames.org with a given service name. Somebody answered it for getting SID in the sqlplus. so I tried it in a similar way, but it didn't work.
I have a service name, but I don't know how to get host and port. I know that I can parse the tnsnames.ora file to get it, but if possible, I want to use the more official and safe way.
I'd appreciated if somebody knows it.

I'd appreciated if somebody knows it.Oracle RDBMS does not require SQL*Net to operate.
Oracle RDBMS does NOT now or care about content of any tnsnames.ora file.
Realize that each (remote) user can have their own personalized copy of tnsnames.ora
The content of tnsnames not NOT have to reflect any reality.
I could post the content of my tnsnames.ora & it would be useless to everyone reading.

ERROR:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specifiedstates, in no uncertain terms, that the system can not find the @mrap in the TNS translation methods. Usually that indicates a problem in finding the correct entry in the correct tnsnames.ora file. Some related thoughts:
1) The LIST of methods allowed is found in SQLNET.ORA on the client. If multiple methods are in the list, the client will step through the methods.
It is possible that you do not have method calling the TNSNAMES.ORA file in the list. (You appear to have that.)
2) The mrap must be one of the entries on the left hand side of te equals sign of a stanza.
MRAP = (DESCRIPTION (appears to provide that)
3) The SQLNET.ORA could provide a 'default domain' to append on the end of the lookup value in TNSNAMES.ORA
Not sure whether your post of the sqlnet.ora selectred only a few lines or the entire file.
4) Variable issues can exist.
- The TNS_ADMIN variable may be used to force the use of a specific directory instead of %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin .
- ORACLE_HOME can be adjusted by a variety of methods, and may be in both teh registry and the system environment

• Problem with TNSNAMES.ORA (urgent)

Dear Freinds,
I am trying to run my Forms(6i) on the Form server , but as I try to login to the database to run the form I am getting an error 'ora-12154 : TNS could not resolve the service names' . I have checked the local TNSNAMES.ORA file and it has the entry for my Oracle SID , (my local machine registry has also been changed).
Please tell me if I am missing to set anything .
Thanks in advance .

Hellow There,
Go to services,i.e: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Services.
There is a service nam:
OracleTNSNames80
Right click on it and then click "START".
If this could not solve, then go to Oracle Net8 and try to configure "Database location" and/or "Listener Location" and see what happen in the Listener node.
If this did not help, you would go to www.Informit.com -> Free Library.
and navigate through the Library to a free electronic book:"teach u r self Oracle8 in 21 days" .. good book.

• Strange problem with TNSNAMES file

We just rebaselined a new machine with Windows XP sp2, and installed SQL Plus Release 9.0.1.4.0. We configured the sqlnet.ora file and tnsnames.ora file and placed them in the <orahome>\network\admin\ directory.
But when we try to connect to the 8i database, we get the following error message:
ORA-112154: TNS:could not resolve service name.
Now, I know that this usually means that there's something wrong with the tnsnames.ora file. So I double-checked it and it was fine. So I replaced it with tnsnames.ora files from three other working clients. But it still gave the same error message.
Next, I replaced the sqlnet.ora file from working clients, but it still wouldn't work.
Next I added a TNS_ADMIN environment variable pointing to the <orahome>\network\admin\ directory, but still no go.
Next added an ORACLE_HOME environment variable, but no success.
I had another pair of eyes look at this, and they couldn't find anything wrong.
All the clients are on the same network, the database is up and running, and the other clients can connect without a problem. The client that is not working can ping the server where the 8i database resides.
Help! What am I overlooking? Something in the registry? Can this error message appear for something wrong in the database even though the other 3 clients can connect?

Mark,
I don't think there's something wrong with your database.
This seems more of a communication error between the client and the database, are the other clients the same version?
From what I know 10g clients are not compatible with 8i databases.
It's an SID issue I think, can';t remember now.
will lookup and feed back.
regards,
Tony
PS: Try creating the LOCAL entry in the registry and use the SID you are trying to connect, MIGHT help

• Multiple tnsnames.ora files

Hi,
I am new to oracle and we have multiple versions of oracle installed on our machine. We have Oracle 9i, xe, developer suite - all on the same machine and as a result of that, we have multiple tnsnames.ora files. Due to this, when we try to log into the applications (sql plus, raptor, forms etc.), we get one or the other error all the time.
Is it due to having multiple tnsname.ora files on the same machine. What is the solution to this problem?
Thanks in advance
accts

Is it due to having multiple tnsname.ora files on the same machine.No, every application looks for its own tnsnames.ora, and if you get errors, then it means that something is wrong, not necessarily with tnsnames.ora.
The first thing I'd do is to maintain only one (possibly working) tnsnames.ora (renaming or removing the other ones), and set TNS_ADMIN OS environment variable to point to that one, and try.
It would be useful to know the errors you get...

• DBD::Oracle & Instant client - don't find tnsnames.ora

Hello,
I'm trying to use tns names in Perl scripts to connect with Instant client. I always get the ORA-12154 error when connecting with Perl :
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach).
The perl command that raise the error is :
+$dbh = DBI->connect("dbi:Oracle:MYDB","user","password") or die $DBI::errstr."\n";+
I checked my Oracle installation and everything seems fine. Connection with sqlplus work without problem using the same connection string (sqlplus user/passowrd@MYDB).
I stat'ed my tnsnames.ora file to check if it's accessed : it is with sqlplus, but not with my perl script.
Instant Client has been installed with the zip files made available by Oracle (not RPM). ORACLE_HOME points to the installation directory and tnsnames.ora is located in $ORACLE_HOME//network/admin/. Server is a Red Hat Entreprise 5.
In my knowledge DBD::Oracle use OCI so there should not have difference between sqlplus and DBD::Oracle. Am I wrong ? Anyone have had this problem before ?
Thanks for your help
Florent

Hi,
Environment variables was correctly defined, but your comment put me on the right track.
I printed the %ENV content to check ORACLE_HOME which was OK.
I check the directory and remind I put a sqlnet.ora file in the same directory than tnsnames.ora with the followin content :
AUTOMATIC_IPC = OFF
TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = OFF
names.directory_path = (TNSNAMES)
names.default_domain = world
name.default_zone = world
I removed this file and everything is ok now. I don't really know what this file is used for, but if I keep it online and change MYDB in the connection name to MYDB.world, it worked. I think I have to learn more about names...
Thanks for your help anyway !

Florent

• 1.2.0 reads TNSNAMES.ORA file multiple times and duplicates values in Alias

Since upgrading to 1.2.0.29.98 (clean install on Win XP SP 2), I have noticed that SQL Developer appears to be reading the TNSNAMES.ORA file multiple times. This results in the Network Alias pop-list on the TNS connection type to have duplicate values, although the number of duplicates for each entry varies widely - from four for the least that I saw and 252 for the most (assuming I counted that right :) ). We have approximately 270 entries in our TNSNAMES.ORA and the first entry in the file appears in the Network Alias list four times and the last entry in the file appears in the list 48 times.
To be honest, I switched to Basic JDBC connections with 1.1 and only noticed the problem because of some network performance issues - I thought that SQL Developer had hung and I switched on the debugging and could see that it was looping through the TNSNAMES.ORA file. Now that the network performance issues have been resolved, it still takes a little while to open the new connection window, but it is liveable, so I don't know whether the problem is 1.2 specific or not.

Sue,
I assume from a bit of testing, that "each tns file on the system" means each file in the TNS_ADMIN location that starts with TNSNAMES.ORA.
I set my TNS_ADMIN to a local location and copied the current TNSNAMES.ORA from the network location (and chopped it down to a handful of entries). When I restarted SQL Developer I only had a single copy of each alias. If I copied TNSNAMES.ORA to "Copy of TNSNAMES.ORA" I still only had a single copy of each alias. If I copied TNSNAMES.ORA to TNSNAMES.ORA.TXT I then had two copies of each alias.
Unfortunately, I don't have any say in the maintenance of the network TNS_ADMIN location and it has almost 200 backup copies of the tns file, typically named TNSNAMES.ORA.YYYYMMDD.
My TNS_ADMIN setting is done as a Windows environment variable. I do not have any TNS_ADMIN setting in my registry.

• Parameters of tnsnames.ora

hello. i am new in oracle 10g and i want to take advice. i see the setting parameters of tnsnames.ora on Oracle Net Manager and i set the tnsnames.ora with it.
i developed a client application working with remote oracle 10g database on windows platforms. i developet it on VisualStudio, this application can work with both ms sql and oracle 10g. the user chooses it. when the user chooses Oracle i must create connection string and connect to the remote db.
i can implement it with two way
1. i want only connection name which is defined in tnsnames.ora and connect over it.
2. i make an interface user set the simple and advanced settings of connection parameters and i can insert them into connection string.
which way should i use. i think that it is better to set all of parameters in my application because it will be easier for user. but i think about the future versions of oracle . there may be problems on them.
what do you advice me?
thanks.

Hello user "user518019":
I'm also new in the Oracle world but I have programming since a lot of years. I would recommend to you following a simple rule:
if your applicattion is very simple you must follow the simple way to connect to DB.
By using a "tnsnames.ora" you only need to know a DB name to connect to it. In the other hand, if your are using non-default ports o also like this (per example, a more complicated enviroment) you would need a more detailed box to especify address, port number, service name, etc, etc...
I suppose Oracle will continue using "tnsnames.ora" a lot of years, but this is only a impression. I hope send you some help with this.

• Connect to Oracle DB using DBCP and tnsnames.ora

I have a Spring-based web app that is running on Tomcat and uses DBCP to connect to Oracle.
The problem:
Need to pull database connection information from tnsnames.ora file. There is Oracle Client installed on a server, so tnsnames file is available.
According to JDBC documentation, the following url should do the trick: jdbc:datadirect:oracle:TNSNamesFile=c:\\oracle\\product\\10.2.0\\NETWORK\\ADMIN\\tnsnames.ora;TNSServerName=FITZGERALD.SALES
This leads to the following declaration in dataAccessContext-local.xml file:
+<bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.BasicDataSource" destroy-method="close">+
+<property name="driverClassName" value="oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver"/>+
+<property name="url" value="jdbc:datadirect:oracle:TNSNamesFile=C:\\oracle\\product\\10.2.0\\db_1\\network\\admin\\tnsnames.ora;TNSServerName=TESTDB"/>+
+<property name="username" value="${jdbc.username}"/>+
+<property name="password" value="${jdbc.password}"/>+
+</bean>+
This doesn’t work for me saying that database url is invalid.
Can anyone provide instructions on how to set up DBCP with tnsnames.ora?
Any help greatly appreciated.

You are right, the I got that url may not be correct. I got it from datadirect documentation.
I couldnt find any good information or examples on this, but I think using TNS keyword-value pairs and tnsnames.ora is supported by type4 Oracle 10g JDBC.
Some info I found in section Connecting to the Database through the Applet in JDBC Reference http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/java.102/b14355/jdbcthin.htm#CACCHECD
I guess there is something off in that documentation though. I couldn't get it working.

We'd also found that there is a parsing problem of the tnsnames.ora file by 9.2 ( its in AIX and MAC versions at least). Placing the entire description section on a single line consistently resolved problem.
Opening a Tar on that one.

• EM doesn't allow creation of tnsnames.ora entry with service name orcl11gr2

Dear all,
I'm trying to create a net service name with EM Database Control, via Net Services Administration link. On the service name field, under the 'Edit Net Service Name' screen, I key in orcl11gr2, and it throws the the following error:
Validation Error
Examine and correct the following errors, then retry the operation:
Service Name - Specify a valid service name.
I wonder what is the extra validation that EM is checking. I assume it's checking the number of characters to be 8 characters or less.
Also, because of this extra validation that is in EM, all tnsnames.ora entry that have service name = orcl11gr2, I will not be able to use EM to modify them, as I will get the same above error.
But why does Oracle implements this extra validation, when the same validation is not implemented on other Oracle tools? For instance:
1. dbca allows me to create a database with instance_name greater than 8 characters, and the outcome of initialization parameters will be as follow:
db_name=orcl11gr -- truncated to 8 characters
instance_name=orcl11gr2
db_unique_name=orcl11gr2
service_names=orcl11gr2
2. Oracle Net Manager supports service name of orcl11gr2. The created Net Service Name, I have no problem connecting to the database.
3. Listener support orcl11gr2 service name
I'm using Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.1.0) for Microsoft Windows (x64), running on Windows 7.

• Connect to database with SQL*Plus: is TNSNAMES.ORA used?

Hi ,
we have a local database called DEV01 and a duplicate of this database in a datacenter. To be able to connect to both databases the TNSNAMES.ORA
on the local database server (not the one in the datacenter) has the following entries:
/* Entry for local database */
DEV01_local, DEV01_local.WORLD =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = server01)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SID= DEV01)
/* Entry for database in datacenter */
DEV01,DEV01.WORLD =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = server02)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SID = DEV01)
When I connect to the local database server I set the Oracle-environment as follows:
export ORACLE_SID=DEV01
export PATH=/opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/9.2.0/bin:$PATH
export ORACLE_HOME=/opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/9.2.0
Now I start SQL*Plus as follows:
oracle#> sqlplus user/user
SQL> select instance_name, host_name from v$instance;
INSTANCE_NAME    HOST_NAME
DEV01            server01
Since the SID is on both databases the same (DEV01) I really do not understand how Oracle decides to which database SQL*Plus connects to.
Is it a matter of the entries in the TNSNAMES.ORA?
But when I start SQL*Plus as follows:
oracle#> sqlplus user/user@DEV01_local
SQL> select instance_name, host_name from v$instance;
INSTANCE_NAME    HOST_NAME
DEV01            server01
or
oracle#> sqlplus user/user@DEV01
SQL> select instance_name, host_name from v$instance;
INSTANCE_NAME    HOST_NAME
DEV01            server02
everything is as expected.
Does anybody know which database gets chosen when just connect with "sqlplus user/user" (without @DEV01 or @DEV01_local)?
Any help will be appriciated!
Rgds
Jan

Both databases have the SID=DEV01.
The ORACLE_SID is set to DEV01 - but when connecting I end up at
oracle#> sqlplus user/user
SQL> select instance_name, host_name from v$instance;
INSTANCE_NAME    HOST_NAME
