Troubleshooting issues using the BlackBerry Virtual Expert

Posted originally on the Inside BlackBerry Help Blog
Does your BlackBerry need a health assessment? Are you considering a repair? If so, check out the BlackBerry Virtual Expert (BBVE), a simple, self-guided diagnostic app for BlackBerry smartphones.
Depending on what type of smartphone you are using, you can run tests to help identify if an issue is occurring and get recommendations on how to solve the problem.
To help you get started with BBVE, here’s a quick overview of how to use this app and what to do if a tests fails.
How to use the BlackBerry Virtual Expert
If you are using BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2.1, BlackBerry Virtual Expert is built in and can be found by opening the Help app followed by tapping Testing along the bottom toolbar. Within this screen, tap Try this now to open BBVE.
For smartphones running BlackBerry OS version 10.2 or earlier, or BlackBerry OS version 7.1 and earlier, to use BBVE you need to install it first.
To do this, open BlackBerry World on your smartphone and search for “BlackBerry Virtual Expert,” or use the following steps to scan a barcode. After installation is complete, look for the BBVE icon that appears on your home screen.
Open BlackBerry World.
Complete one of the following:
If your smartphone is running BlackBerry 10 OS, swipe down from the top of the screen and tapScan Barcode.
If your smartphone is running BlackBerry OS version 7.1 or earlier, press the Menu key followed by Scan a Barcode.
Scan the following barcode and tap Download.
After opening the BBVE, the Health tab appears by default which allows you to identify basic details about your smartphone and quickly access specific settings.
If you select Tests along the bottom toolbar, you can run all of the available tests at once or test a specific feature. To test everything at once, tap All Tests or select a specific feature or function you’d like to test.
If you have concerns about your headphone jack for example, select Audio Test to run a variety of audio-related tests, or optionally select Choose A Test followed by tapping on the specific test you’d like to run.
When you start testing a feature, follow the instructions displayed on your smartphone and complete the required actions followed by recording a result: Pass , Skip , or Fail . When all of the selected tests are completed you are shown your results indicating what passed, what tests were skipped, and of course, any tests that may have failed.
One of the BBVE tests failed! Help!
Should a test fail while using BBVE, after reviewing the suggestions on the Results tab, here are a few things you can do to help get an issue resolved efficiently.
Step 1 – Summarize the issue
Creating a summary of the issue you are encountering and recording what troubleshooting steps you have already taken is a great step that helps our support teams better assist you. In addition to creating a summary, obtain your BlackBerry smartphone details using the steps below.
If you are using a BlackBerry 10 smartphone, to identify your OS version, tap Settings > About and in theCategory drop-down list, select OS. To identify your PIN, tap Settings > About and in the Category drop-down list, select Hardware.
If you are using a BlackBerry OS smartphone, check out this post for help identifying this information.
Step 2 – Back up your device
When you contact support for a potential repair issue, they will guide you through this process, so doing this before you contact support can help speed things along.
If you are using a BlackBerry 10 smartphone, download and install BlackBerry Link for PC or Mac so you can back up your smartphone. For help backing up and restoring your smartphone data, please review the BlackBerry Link User Guide for PC or Mac.
If you are using a BlackBerry OS device, download BlackBerry Desktop Software to back up your smartphone. For help backing up and restoring your data, review the BlackBerry Desktop Software user guide (PC, Mac).
Step 3 – Use self-service support options
Join the BlackBerry Support Community Forums and create a new post about your issue. Be sure to include the summary you created in step 1 because this allows community members to suggest alternative steps that may help resolve the issue you are encountering.
Review and search the BlackBerry Knowledge Base for a support article that may provide a solution to the issue you are encountering.
Step 4 – Contact your service provider or visit a BlackBerry Expert Center
If you are still unable to resolve the issue, consider contacting your service provider or BlackBerry Expert Center for additional assistance. As mentioned earlier, having your smartphone details and a summary of troubleshooting performed will help out whoever is assisting you with the issue.
For help contacting your service provider, search using your favorite browser for your service provider’s support website.
Depending on where you are located, you may have the option of visiting a BlackBerry Expert Center. For help finding a BlackBerry Expert Center near you, check out the following link: Find help at a BlackBerry Expert Center.
Frequently asked questions
Why does BlackBerry Virtual Expert need permission X, Y & Z?
For BBVE to perform specific tests, select permissions must be enabled the first time you open BBVE. You can optionally disable some or all permissions but keep in mind any tests requiring disabled permissions will not work. If you run a test that requires a specific permission such as the ability to use the camera, you will receive a notification to update your permission settings.
What tests does BBVE include?
Depending on which type of BlackBerry model you are using, available tests include:
Touch Screen
Display
USB Port
Main Keypad
Keyboard
Side keys
Slider
Cameras
Camera Flash
Receiver Speaker
Loudspeaker
Stereo Loudspeaker
Stereo Headset
Microphone
Vibrator Bluetooth
Status LED

  • An issue using the COM components supplied with SAP GUI 6.2 or 6.4

    We are having an issue using the COM components supplied with SAP GUI 6.2 or 6.4.  We used to have SAP 4.6c and now we have 5.0.  When we were on 4.6c, we used these COM components to logon and execute RFC calls and we had much success.  Now that we are on 5.0, we can’t seem to instance any SAP functions that have something to do with SAP Workflow.  We have experienced this problem when using VB6 or .NET, but our existing code that always worked is in VB 6.0.
    SAP Components used:
    o     SAP Logon Control
    o     SAP Function Control
    o     Librfc32.dll
    o     Other supporting C DLLs and/or COM object supplied with the SAP GUI installation.
    For example, if we want to call the RFC ARCHIV_CONNECTION_INSERT, this code fails in VB6 when the “Set objworkflow = objFuncCtrl.Add(strFunction)” line of code executes.  Instead of returning an instance of the object ARCHIV_CONNECTION_INSERT function, no object is created.  In 6.2, SAP raises no errors, but the object we are trying to create is still “Nothing”.  If we use 6.4, SAP raises an error “SAP data type not supported” via a message box and then the object is still = Nothing.  Interestingly enough, the 6.2 GUI COM controls don’t display the error dialog.  The message box that is shown comes from the SAP Function COM Object "SAP.Functions" (wdtfuncs.ocx).
    Now, what is interesting is if we use the same code to call a standard function or custom function that doesn’t have anything to do with SAP Workflow, then the code works fine.  Again, all of our code used to work just fine on an SAP 4.6 system.
    Here is the code that fails:
        'SAP Logon control - object for creating connections to an SAP system
        Dim objSAPLogonCtrl As Object
        'SAP connection object
        Dim objConnection As Object
        'Object that will represent the SAP function called
        Dim objSAP As Object
        'SAP function control object - object factory for creating other SAP function objects
        Dim objFuncCtrl As Object
        'Create instance of an SAP logon conrol
        Set objSAPLogonCtrl = CreateObject("SAP.Logoncontrol.1")
        'Create a connection object
        Set objConnection = objSAPLogonCtrl.NewConnection
        'Define connecion parameters
        objConnection.ApplicationServer = "sapvm"
        objConnection.SystemNumber = "00"
        objConnection.Client = "800"
        objConnection.User = "iissap"
        objConnection.Password = "tstadm"
        objConnection.Language = "E"
        objConnection.TraceLevel = 10
        'call the logon method of the connection object
        If objConnection.Logon(0, True) = False Then
            MsgBox Error
            Exit Sub
        End If
        'Create an instance of the SAP Function control object
        Set objFuncCtrl = CreateObject("SAP.Functions")
        'Set the function control connection object
        Set objFuncCtrl.Connection = objConnection
        'Function name to be generated and called
        Dim strFunction As String
        strFunction = <b>"ARCHIV_PROCESS_RFCINPUT"</b>
        'Create an instance of the function defined in strFunction
        Set objworkflow = objFuncCtrl.Add(strFunction)
        If objworkflow Is Nothing Then
            MsgBox "Could not create object " & strFunction
        Else
            MsgBox strFunction & " object created."
        End If
    If anyone has seen anything like this or has any ideas, please help!

  • Has Firefox been optimzied for the new Mac OSX Lion? I've been having issues using the browser since upgrading to Lion. Issues include using some websites as well as google e-mail...icons do not appear etc.

    when checking mail in google I am not able to 'star' an e-mail or mark it etc. I don't get the option to do that, as I did before upgrading to Mac Osx Lion

    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
    Isolating an issue by using another user account
    If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    the BES stands for Blackberry Enterprise Server.. It is basically like a Microsoft Exchange Server but specifically just for Blackberries.
    So i'd assume that you're not on a BES. What you need to do is uninstall the Desktop Manger and then Reinstall it. What version is it? the part that you're looking for is going to be where it will ask you if you want to use it for personal email/BIS or for work email/BES... just make sure you select the personal/BIS option and those messages will stop.

  • For those having EAP auth issue using the ACS appliance

    Thought I'd pass along my config and resolution to an issue I was having concerning EAP-TLS auth on an ACS appliance.
    We have two ACS Solution Engines (3.2.2) running and doing a database synch and using Generic LDAP as the external database. We did the certificate walk through for the ACS and then turned on EAP-TLS auth. We are trying to use EAP-TLS auth for wireless access through our AP1200s and Windows XP laptops, but we kept getting errors.
    After digging for days I found out that when you request a certificate it pulls the CN name. Our CN name in Active Directory did not match our login name. I changed my CN name to match my login name and I was then able to grab a certificate and authenticate using EAP-TLS for our wireless.
    I am in the process of upgrading our ACSes to ver 3.3.2 so that I can run the Remote Agent for Windows on a Windos 2003 server and then use the Windows database as the external database and not Generic LDAP.
    I hope this helps someone!
    Jeff

    Ted,
    When I connect to the Derby database in Eclipse using the embedded driver, I can successfully drag and drop tables to create a report. This driver uses the derby.jar file and has no package sealing violations popping up.
    <br/>
    <br/>
    When specifying a driver for a new derby database in Eclipse, the default Derby client driver expects to use the derbyclient.jar driver file. If I only specify this as the driver file this is the error I get:

    The error I initially posted resulted after I added the derby.jar as a driver file in addition to the derbyclient.jar, which I don't think is supposed to be done now that I am thinking about it, but I did it because of the class not found exception above. Is this perhaps simply a bug that it is trying to utilize the derby.jar embedded driver when the client driver should be used instead? Or am I doing something wrong myself?

  • Issue using the DBFS PL/SQL API

    Hi guys,
    I'm trying to use the DBFS PL/SQL APIs and create some simple functions that for example return the file size or move a file to a different path. I created a user DBFS_USER and granted DBFS_ROLE to that user. Using SQLDeveloper, when I run the following code, it works fine:
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
    DECLARE
    l_props DBMS_DBFS_CONTENT_PROPERTIES_T;
    l_prp dbms_dbfs_content_property_t;
    l_blob BLOB;
    l_item_type INTEGER;
    BEGIN
    DBMS_DBFS_CONTENT.getPath (
    path => '/staging_area/test_dir/IAMDBFS_USER.txt',
    properties => l_props,
    content => l_blob,
    item_type => l_item_type);
    FOR x in 1..l_props.count LOOP
    l_prp := l_props(x);
    if (l_prp.propname = 'std:length') then
    DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line(l_prp.propname || ' : ' || l_prp.propvalue);
    end if;
    END LOOP;
    END;
    However, when I try to put it in a package, I get the error message "Error(415,10): PLS-00201: identifier 'DBMS_DBFS_CONTENT_PROPERTY_T' must be declared" while trying to compile. This is what my package and its body looks like:
    create or replace
    PACKAGE MY_DBFS_PKG IS
    Function GetFileLength
    (P_FILE_PATH IN Varchar2
    ,P_ErrMsg OUT Varchar2)

    Am I missing an extra grant somewhere? Or have I missed a declaration in the package or package body?
    I am not a DB person so pardon the probably inefficient loop to find the length or wrong declaration somewhere. I'm open to suggestions/recommendations but want to use the DBFS PL/SQL API as I need other functions out of it.
    Thanks very much in advance.

  • Issue using the mp:Link item in a plug-in mpcui definition

    Hello,
    I'm developing an OEM plug-in and wanted to use the Link item - <mp:Link label="Click Me" click="{invokeActivity('myPage')}"/> - in my mpcui-defined UI.
    This actually works but it's conflicting with other content on the page. For example, if I define an InfoItem followed by the Link item, the link overlays the label of the InfoItem.
    Here's my code
    <mp:InfoItem label="My Label" value="Some text"/>
    <mp:Link label="Click Me" click="{invokeActivity('myPage')}"/>
    This results in a single line on the page with link label (Click Me) overlayed on top of the InfoItem label (My Label), with the InfoItem text (Some text) to the right.
    [overlayed My Label and Click Me]    Some text
    The mouse pointer turns into a finger pointer and I can click the garbled/overlayed text and it navigates to my page so it works; it's just messed up layout-wise. I don't have any positioning information in either element but normally, if I just use multiple InfoItem elements, they will be arranged vertically down the page. I was expecting the Link element to work the same way but it doesn't seem to for me.
    Has anyone seen this? know how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    InfoItem tags can only be used as a child to the InfoDisplay tag.  And InfoDisplay only accepts InfoItem tags as children.  If you are trying to get a link into an InfoDisplay list, this can be done on the InfoItem tag:
                            <mp:InfoItem id="relatedHost" label="{getString('HOSTED_BY')}" value="{model.relatedHost}"
                                imageRenderer="{appModel.renderer('TARGET_TYPE')}"
                                imageDataSource="{model.relatedHostType}"
                                destination="{model.relatedHostLink}"  />
    destination can be an URL string or an Activity (which you have defined in your integration class).

  • Dynamic Image issue using the SDK CrystalReportViewer in a Web Farm

    Hello,
    Well it's the classic dyanamic Red X image problem with a twist. We have the CrystalReportViewer control coded into an ASPX web page using the BOE XI R2 SDK.
    The problem is everything works fine (after all the usual Red X image fixes) when only one of the servers in the farm are running. It's when two are running, by using Process Monitor, I can tell NetScaler is splitting up the HTTP calls so one server may have the temp image created and of course the other one doesn't.
    Therefore, if you're lucky enough for one server to handle most of the load, image comes up fine. Otherwise, the report renders, but you get Red X for the image.
    I have seen an article about a registry key (CrystalImageDir) that allows you to enter a network share as the temp folder. The problem is, we are using Windows Integrated Authentication for the intranet site so you're faced the two hop authentication hurtle, leading to access denied on the UNC network path.
    Anyone using the SDK in a .NET application using multiple web front end servers?
    Thanks!
    Horus

    By the way, I'm hearing that NetScaler can handle sticky sessions. However, since a report with dynamic images is really a GET request for the report, then a bunch of sub-GETs to grab the images, what URL would you set the sticky session for?
    For example, if the web page containing the CrystalReportsViewer was:

    Then report the viewer would contain links to something like:

    So which URL/page gets load balanced? Or is that not how LB works?
    Thanks!

  • OSX server 3.0.3 wiki issues using the iPad

    Hello,
    I just got the new OSX server 3.0.3 Maverics installed and everything seems to work fine except for going to the Wiki using an iPad. The Mac and the iPhone work fine but when you try and go to the wiki using the iPad it try's to redirect to https://domainname/wiki/ipad/#route=/wiki/ipad/ but it won't work. I just get a blank page on the iPad.
    Any idea how to fix this. It's driving me crazy.
    Thank you.

    There are add-on packages for Windows that can access CardDAV (addresses) and CalDAV (calendar) services.
    See this list and this list for some of the available options.
    Windows Server with Exchange Server and Microsoft Office clients might be a better choice, if you're working with a whole lot of Windows clients.  Microsoft Office is also available for OS X, as well.

  • Export issue using the shooting script fix

    I've followed the directions given at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4369249#4369249 for switching between formats (r.e. showing shooting info and not). The issue I have now is on export. When I export to pdf from a file saved under the film template it exports the shooting information--causing the lines in the pdf to be obscured by the camera directions.  This leaves me with a useless script as no actor/actress is able to read it.  I tried to export as txt as a work around but the formating comes out skewed.  I need a way to export which will leave the formatting correct and will leave off the shooting info, so it can be used as a readable script.   Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    We are aware of this issue and it will be fixed in our next update.
    Meanwhile workaround is:
    1. Export you script to astx format
    2. Import this astx file into story
    3. Export this script to pdf.
    Thanks

  • Issues using the signature function of mail

    I am having trouble using signatures on several imacs at the workplace. My coworkers and I have all put in our signatures but cannot select them for use in any emails. These computers are all linked to the same email address but we each are hoping to use a different signature when we send mail out.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Nevermind, I'm a dummy lol

  • A bunch of issues with the Blackberry Style

    I own a black berry style 9670 6.0 Bundle 2426 (v6.0.0.522, Platform 4.4.0.434) Cryptographic Kernel v3.8.6.5 Branding Version 1.0.133.513A
    Free space 220.4MB
    Media Card Free space 3.5GB
    Carrier: Boost Mobile
    Country: U.S.A.
    #1. There is no padlock icon on the home screen. How do i fix this? I have restored the device to its original state and still no padlock icon.
    #2. I recently installed then purchased 'CrunhSMS' app from Blackbery App Store version 3.31 and then subsequently updated to version 3.33 and now am running version 3.34.
    I then tried to schedule several texts and nothing happened. (The recipients claimed to not receiving anything) I then tried testing the software to see if I was doing anything wrong and still nothing happened.
    Since I have updated my phone to Version 3.34 my phone has slowed down and battery life is horrible. The scheduling portion still does not work and the phone always seems busy (the busy signal little black clock seems to appear when ever I try and access anything on the phone)
    I then uninstalled the app from my device and battery life returned to normal and no more system busy icon.
    All of the above happened on or before March 22, except for the padlock icon issue which i first noticed today.
    I reistalled 'CrunchSMS' today version 3.37 and the same thing happened. At 9:00p.m. I had 40% battery life and by 10:30p.m. I had 5%. I emailed the tech support at CrunchSMS and have never heard back from them. The original email to them was sent on March 22. Can anyone help me with either of these issues.

    How about starting with the basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide?

  • Weird problem with Blackberry Virtual Expert - it says I have 10.3.2.858?

    This Topic has been Moved for correct placement

    You are confusing RAM with hard drive space - you appear to have the standard amount of RAM (the memory a computer uses to run apps). 4 GB is fine, but considered a minimum - more would be better.
    As for the hard drive space (that is the space you have available on your hard drive to read/write): you need 8 GB minimum to install Mountain lion and, as a general rule, you should maintain a minimum of 10 - 15 GB of empty space at all times - more is better there as well. You can find out how much space you have by highlighting your hard drive icon (Macintosh HD icon on your desktop) and control click on it. In the popup window, choose Get Info. Then post the info showing such as Capacity, Used, and Available.
    FWIW, Mountain Lion will continue to show in your Purchases because it is available for you to download again should you need it. You obviously have it installed if it shows that you are running 10.8.3 - which, but the way, is not the latest version, so run Software Update: we are up to 10.8.5.
