Troubleshoot with Safari Internet URL bar

This is in regards to the Safari Internet. The link bar at the top of my internet browser is not showing anymore. That is, the bar to type in the URL of a site... www... has disappeared and i can't seem to get it back anymore. I may have clicked something accidentally and now i can't seem to figure out how to get it back again. Can something please help me figure this out. On the View>Customize Toolbar option, the URL bar appears in the toolbar, yet in reality, it really isn't there. Help? Thank you in advance!

Hello an:
I think I understand your last post (maybe) as we may be having a terminology problem
When you open Safari you should have two "bars" - the toolbar and, under that, the bookmark bar.
As I understand your post, you still do not have an address field in the toolbar. Click on view>customize toolbar. Drag the "go to this address/google" item to the toolbar. After that, you may customize your bookmark bar any way you wish by showing all bookmarks and changing the bookmark bar items.

  • Safari 5 URL bar searches page title in addition to URL

I just upgraded to Safari 5. Now whenever I start typing a URL in the URL bar, it gives me suggestions based on the page's title in addition to the page's URL. I want to disable this new "feature" and go back to the old functionality where it only suggests pages by URL.
    Thanks.

I agree, I do NOT like this new feature. Say I earlier went to an eBay sub-page, now I want to go to the eBay home page. I start typing e-b-a-y and it autofills the URL for the eBay sub-page I visited earlier.
I do not want to go to that one, so I press "delete", which simply removes the autofill suggestion and also the "y" in ebay, so I type the "y" again and the same suggested page fills in.
So now in order to go to the eBay home page I must type "ebay.com" whereas before I could just type "ebay".
Before Safari 5 these "already visited pages" would show up as a drop-down window, which I could scroll down to and choose if that's where I wanted to go. Now, though, that they're coming up in the address bar I'm forced to go there or type in the complete URL.
How can I turn this feature off. I know there's a Terminal command to do it, because there are Terminal commands to turn on and off many other features of Safari.
I do not wish to simply use Private Browsing because that turns off suggestions from my Bookmarks.
    Help!!

  • Safari 8 URL bar

I just upgraded to Yosemite and safari 8.0.
Macbook Pro Retina 13" (late 2013)
Sometimes when I type a website in the URL-bar and press Enter, nothing happens? This is particularly annoying when you only type the first couple of letters of a website in your history, and it automatically completes the address. The completed address is there, but the website doesn't load. I have to click the bar again and press Enter a second time.
This happens randomly and is not the same every time for any particular website. Sometimes I can replicate it for a particular website 10 times in a row, and then a couple of minutes later i can't.
I didn't have this problem before I upgraded, and my keyboard is working perfectly.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

Go step by step by step and test.
    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
        Restart the computer.
        Start up in Safe Mode.

    2. Delete Caches.db
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
        Select "Library" from the dropdown.
        Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db
Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.
        Close windows and relaunch Safari.
    3. Empty Caches
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
    4. Delete Cookies
Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
        Click “Remove All Website Data”.
    5. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
Turn on those one by one and test.

  • HT1338 safari missing url bar

how to restore the safari url tab?
I try to un install so i could reinstall , but a message came up saying cannot be uninstall because it came with operating system

Click View from the Safari menu bar then from the drop down menu click Customize Toolbar. Drag up the default bar or individual objects.
Going by your profile, your Mac has Lion v10.7 installed.
The only way to reinstall Safari on Lion is to use Lion Recovery

  • Safari missing URL bar

My Mac pro updated to Safari 5.1 and worked fine for a couple of days but now does not have a URL address bar.  I can't get far with that.  I have been reading this forum but have yet to see this problem posted.  I have already updated my apps and gotten rid of those that were not essential.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Thank you very much Charlie.  It worked, of course!  This was my first time on the forum and I'm glad I finally posted.

  • Safari Address (URL) Bar

My kids did something to my computer yesterday, and now I cannot see the Address bar in the Safari browser. It used to show above the row of buttons for home, print, etc.
I have checked all of the documentation and Safari help, but cannot find any information on how to set the Address bar to hide or show.
Does anybody know what I need to do?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Click on the View menu and choose "Show Toolbar".
From your description I think that's all you'll need to do. But if the address bar still isn't visible you may also need to click on View > Customize Toolbar and then drag the items you want back into the toolbar.

For FaceTime try the troubleshooting advice given here:

    Also try resetting your iPad:
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • Flash player work with Safari, but not with Internet Explorer

My flash player had a problem so I uninstalled it.  I had a problem downloading the player with Internet Explorer, so I successfully download it with Safari.  The player works fine with Safari, but I cannot get it to work with Internet Explorer 8.
I used to have the Flash Player 10 Active X (10.1.85.3), which I had uninstalled.
I now have the Flash Player 10 Plugin (10.1.85/3)
The problem I had downloading the player with IE was that the "allow Active X" information bar never appeared and I was unable to see any download at all.
How do I get flash to work with my Internet Explorer 8 (8.0.7600.16385)?

This adobe web site worked easily for me, when I needed to install adobe flash JUST for IE8.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
All you need to do is choose your OS in the top window, then in the bottom window choose "Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for Windows Internet Explorer", and voila, that is what adobe installs!! Give it a go. I had problems too, before I foud this. Diligent

  • No internet with safari and appstore

    Hi,
odd enough my mac mini (mid 2011 2.7GHz i7 16GB) with mavericks doesn't like to connect to the internet with safari or software update or appstore. Also no printing over the LAN!
Firefox, Mail, Terminal etc are working just fine with their connection!
The strange thing is, that my MBP (Beginning 2011, 13" 2.3GHz i5 8GB) and iMac27 (2009) have no such problems with Mavericks Safari ...
    Any hints?
I tried a lot of DNS already to no avail, switching to WLAN no change, resetting Safari - nope...
    Best Regards

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Safari URL bar disappeared

The URL bar on Safari disappeared and when I open a 'new tab' under 'file' a new tab appears but the tab says 'untitled' and a new browser does not open. I think I did something by mistake. What should I do? Please help me with a very non technical answer. I tried resetting to the default settings but this did not help.

I think I may not have explained my problem well. Until I did something which I probably should not have done, I could simply type a URL and the given web site would appear. Now, the only way I can get to a URL is to go to yahoo or google, do a search for the URL and then click on the URL when it is listed among the results for the search. I want to get the browser back to the way it way before and have it provide me with the option of typing in a URL near the top of the screen. I am neither asking how to include a URL in the toolbar nor how to include a URL as a favorite.
    Does this help?
    Thank you.

  • Safari constantly fighting url bar

    Hi Team,
So I am back with more issues surrounding the usability model for Safari URL bar.
This is the behaviour that causes a 3X increase in workload to get it to work.
    1. Single click highlights the entire url, so I have to double click to unselect, then click to position cursor...
Where else in OS X is this behaviour - it is wrong.
    2. When I copy the URL, it does not allow me to copy *without* the http:// or https:// etc.
This mean I have to go back to the start of the url and manually delete the http protocol part all the time!
Try a copy from url, then in terminal > traceroute [paste url]
    Infuriating
    3. Now I find a new pet hate.
When I enter a domain, it auto completes, and often correctly - awesome... not so fast.
when I arrow to right, to continue typing, Safari 'assumes' I want a slash /
But I want a port!! this is also a valid address http://www.mysite.com:81/index.html
    So, there you have it.
Safari is worse than before from a usability perspective, and I am a long time user and pretty darn inconvenienced by these cahnges.
All I ask, can we have a 'choose behaviour' setup?
How hard can it be to create a real developers browser?
Pray for the best, you know we deserve the best, not a sheep-browser.

Matt Hardy's Apple Support message, "copy url includes http" dated Aug 28, 2012 describes a hard-to-describe issue as well as any I've ever seen anywhere.  (Thanks Matt!)  Regarding that issue, I am surprised that even though I always perform timely OS and Mac App updates Safari's "Copy and Paste URL" remained UI logical on my system until after upgrading to Yosemite. (In other words, like Carolyn Samit's post above, Safari's "Copy & Paste URL" was still UI logical on my system back in June of 2013.)  Now, and since late 2013, that simple operation has become a huge annoyance - exactly as described by Matt and by ericblanding  at https://discussions.apple.com/message/19413328#19413328.
The issue is now more than 2 years old!   Hoping to hear from Matt Hardy or ericblanding...  "Am I overlooking a solution?"
