Troubleshooting 6th gen ipod nano "unable to identify ipod"

Just this evening I plugged my ipod in to my laptop and I continually recieve the message that says something along the lines of "unable to identify ipod". I ran through the trouble shooting tips on the support website, including new usb port, restart, uninstall-reinstall, and turning off my anti-virus. Is there something else I can do to get my computer to recognize my device? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Your problem is completely different from the original post. The OP could not run the correct version of iTunes on their older computer. You're much more likely to get the help you need by starting your own thread with a properly descriptive subject line.

  • In iTunes, how do I switch to an Ipod nano from and old ipod that doesn't work any more

in iTunes on your computer, how do I switch to an Ipod nano from and old ipod that doesn't work any more?  It has all the folders and songs I had on my old ipod, but does not recognize my ipod nano and cannot sync with it?

    Hi bob12345S,
If your iPod nano does not appear in iTunes when connected to your computer, you may want to troubleshoot using the steps on this page -

  • We have itunes music on a computer, an ipod nano, and a new ipod touch under two different accounts. How can we combine the music from both accounts to one device?

There is no "adding" a device.  Simply plug the iDevice into the computer.  iTunes should automatically detect the device when it is connected.
iTunes can sync/manage as many iDevices as you want... there is no 1 device limit.

  • I have just bought an ipod classic, I already have an ipod nano.  The new ipod was connected to the computer to charge and it named itself with my name on the old nano, how do I get the computer to recognise the new one

My mistake, it was nothing to do with format.  It woldn't sync because my movies were HD.  HD movies won't sync to an iopd classic 160 GB but when you purchase a HD movie, itunes gives you a SD vervsion of the movie which is compatible with the ipod.  Just needed to go to store, click movies, click purchased and untick the HD box and there you have the SD versions.  Download the SD versions and then sync your ipod and bobs you uncle, movies are on the ipod

  • Ipod 6th gen help. (nano)

Of all the technology i have ever used apple makes the most horribly put together devices in the world. Just for christmas i got a 6th generation ipod nano. It just started all of a sudden when in seep mode and waken up a white screen would only show. Now a day later my ipod turns off and cannot me turned back on. Even when plugged in it no longer turns on and is not acknowledged as a device. I can not restore it to factory settings because it wont show up as a device. After this ipod i am no longer getting anything from apple again.

  • IPod 6th gen.  nano freezes at adding playlists

I reset iPod to factory settings, apply 2 artists for 86 songs, sync'd good. Went to apply another artist or  playlist iTunes froze up. Had to press button to restart computer for each time it freezes up. iPod Classic works fine.

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

  • 6th gen. Nano volume decrease button repair

Is it possible to get a repair if my volume decrease button won't work?
If yes, then how do I do that? How do I notify Apple? What would be the "requirements?"

    Howdy Hemi,
It sounds like you are setting the volume to the desired level, but it keeps going all the way down on its own after some time. I would start by resetting the iPod Nano 6th gen:
    Reset your iPod
Test the issue again after resetting to see if that resolved it. If it does not, then I would next recommend using the following article to restore the software and try it again.

  • Ipod Nano - unable to upload photos

    hi.
I recieved an ipod nano 8g for Christmas. I have been unable to successfully upload photos onto it. I do not have any songs on it yet so space shouldn't be an issue at all. I have a folder in my 'picutre' file designated for the photos I would like to have on the ipod and I have synced it via itunes as the directions require. So far, only 4 of the 25 photos show up on the ipod. Of them, 2 are so distorted that the photo is nearly impossible to view.
I have been on hold with apple for the last 25 minutes - but my call has yet to be picked up.

Having the same problem. Here's our post.

  • IPod Nano - unable to reset, no charge, DEAD

OK - my iPod Nano was working just fine and then the music stopped and the screen went blank.
I plugged it into the computer - no charge/no change and not recognized.
I plugged it into the wall outlet charger - no charge/no change.
I tried to reset it, but apparently I didn't because the screen is still black and it is not recognized by the computer/iTunes.
I'm thinking this guy is toast... please tell me I'm wrong!
    Thanks,
    Greg

Same with me gmkovich. Listened to it fine yesterday went to turn it on this morning and its dead! What is going on? We've spent a lot of money on the ipod and the songs. This isn't right. Of course I'm past the one year warranty.

  • IPod Nano: Unable to remove cord

Have a new ipod nano. Everything works fine except the connecting plug will not come out of the dock. Any solutions

By squeezing the sides of the connection, the plug is easily pulled out.

  • If I turn in my 1st generation iPod Nano into the iPod Nano replacement program, what iPod will I get?

If I turn in my iPod Nano into the iPod replacement program, will I get a 7th generation or a first generation?

Neither. You will get an 8GB silver 6th Generation Nano.

  • Will Apple change my ipod nano 1g for an ipod nano 7g?

I have just found my old Ipod nano and I've been wondering if they would change it for the newest generation or for the older one.
    Thanks!

  • 1 iPod Touch, 1 iPod Nano (Brand New) & 2 iPod Classics Not Reconized

    Hi,
I have 1 iPod Touch, 2 iPod Classic & 1 iPod Nano (brand new one)
Since the iTunes V9 update none of them will show up in Windows or iTunes.
I have tryed the 5 R's, wiping everything off the computer and reinstalling it, reinstalling iTunes and more!
    Still nothing
Have any of you had the same problem and managed to solve it ??
    Thanks in advance

Sorry, I followed both guides and uninstalled everything - rebooted, reinstalled iTunes like your second link instructions said.
PC sees all devices fine in Windows Explorer (and makes the pling sound when I connect them, they just do not show up in iTunes.
(ipod nano, ipod touch 32GB, iphone 1st gen, ipad 1st gen)
Manually starting or restarting all itunes/ipod related services doesn't do a thing either, nothing will sync.
    I'm at a loss.

  • I own 2 ipods an ipod nano series 4 and ipod series 6 I want to store different tunmes on each ipod, but when I try to sync the series 4 with I tunes I get a message that says there is not enough space on my device.  How do I achieve what I want?

O wn 2 iPod nanos series 4 and series 6 I want to sync different music on each iPod but I get the message when trying to sync the series 4 that there is too much data for the sync to take place.  It seems both iPods have the same name, so I guess I have to rename one, how do I do this?
    Or is there another solution
    Any help appreiated

It would be useful to you if they had a different name, but the computer knows they are different. Create separate sync playlists for each device and go to the Music tab when it is connected and specify which playlist should be used for the sync.
