Troubleshooting Airport-Hardware Problems

Hello - I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to test if the airport card itself is malfunctioning or if there is possibly a different hardware problem.
Several months ago I believe my ethernet port got fried in a lightning storm (because my router, modem and ethernet port in my PC all got fried). I've been solely using my airport card since.
A couple days ago that didn't work either. I am able to connect wirelessly with my new iMac, so it doesn't seem that the problem is with my router. I cannot connect at any of my other wireless spots either.
Before I try to buy a new airport card, I'd like to find out if there's a way to test the hardware.
I have tried reinstalling the OS by doing a Archive and install, but that didn't seem to do any good.
Thanks.

Hi, Steve. Does System Profiler "see" your Airport card? If not, the first thing to make sure of is that your Airport card cage is securely connected to your logic board. That connection tends to work loose over time, especially in Tibooks that are picked up and transported frequently.
Go to this page for easy instructions on removing the Airport card from a Tibook. As soon as you get the bottom cover off the machine, the card is right in front of you. First remove it gently from its slot or cage, then reseat it firmly. Finally, press down hard on the rectangular tab at the end of the ribbon cable that's attached to it — that's its connector to the logic board, and that's what most often works loose. If yours is loose at all, you'll feel it click softly into place as you press on it. Then put the bottom cover back on and test again to see whether System Profiler sees the card. Post back with results.

  • Looks serious. possible hardware problem. unable to install any OS.

    Hi,
Powerbook was working absolutely fine. Stupidly, I attempted to watch a partially (97%) downloaded (with Bittorrent) movie (.wmv -- WM3) in Windows Media Player 9 in full screen mode. Half way through the movie freezes. I try and get out of full screen, nothing changes -- the whole machine is frozen. I restart. During boot there's a serious error -- kernel panic I think -- telling you to restart machine in various languages including Japanese. Restart. Freezes during start up window progress bar. Restart. Freeze.
I start up from the Jaguar disk 1 start up disk, go into Disk Utilties, repair disk -- errors found, and fixed apparently. Restart. Freeze.
I start up from DiskWarrior 4 start up disk and start it on the drive. Step 6: "Overlapped files detected" with a number after, and it starts taking ages. I left DW working for nearly two days until it seemed to have frozen (still on step 6).
I connect the sick PB to an iMac via firewire and start up the PB in disk target mode, the PB's drive appears on the desktop of the iMac and I'm able to easily with no problems copy off all my personal files. At that point I thought all was saved -- I was out of hot water, no further real problems. All I had to do is wipe the drive and reinstall etc.
I reformatted the drive from the iMac choosing to zero aswell. The PB's drive appears on the desktop empty and looking fine.
Start up the PB using Panther retail install disk one click install, it goes through checking the install disk then starts to check the target disk or actually install on the target disk -- at that point kernel panic -- 'restart machine' in various languages including Jap. Start up again using Panther disk, this time choose Disk Utilities to attempt to refromat the drive again, kernel panic before Disk Utilties even gets fully open.
I start up the PB using Jaguar retail install disk one, choose Disk Utilties -- fine. I reformat the drive, this time not bothering with zeroing. Fine. Go through to install Jaguar. Again it checks the install disk fine, then immediately after, kernel panic.
I tried partitioning the drive into two using Disk Utilties on Jaguar start up disk. My thinking was, maybe the start of the drive is damaged. Then tried to install onto partition two: panic. Just to check, tried to install to partition one: panic.
It's a 60GB drive. I installed Jaguar onto it ages ago successfully. The only difference was when doing it ages ago is I used the PB's internal CD/DVD drive. That had since broken and I've been using an external firewire CD/DVD drive -- all the above various Jaguar / Panther attempts were from the external drive. I just received a 2nd hand internal CD/DVD drive I bought on eBay -- I was blindly/stupidly hoping that using an internal CD drive would solve my problem but it hasn't.
What's the problem? It seems as if the initial Windows Movie Player crash has caused this, but that can't be can it? That was a software crash and I've since reformated the drive. There shouldn't be any remnants of that in anyway. So it's a hardware problem? But it was working fine before the crash and nothing has happened to the PB between the crash and now. But there's no two ways about it -- right now the PB seems terminally broken.
Any suggestions how to get my PB working again?
    TIA,
    John.

It's intalled. So it turns out I was lying when I said "The only difference was when doing it ages ago is I used the PB's internal CD/DVD drive." -- I forgot to mention there was no AirPort card in the PB when I installed Jag ages ago.
Also a small note: it seems an internal CD drive was necessary in the end. When the Panther install restarted and requested disk 2 I couldn't get it to recognize disk 2 from the external drive -- had to use the internal one to continue (although I didn't spend too much time/effort trying to get the external one to work but on the face of it it didn't seem to). (Although I can imagine there may be a way of installing stuff from disk 2 after having customized the install to not require anything from disk 2 for the first main automated install possibly? I may sell the internal CD/DVD drive if so as otherwise it was a waste of money).
Having installed Panther I put the AirPort card and the 2nd memory back in and started up -- all's apparently OK, but of course there's good reason not to be convinced of that. I didn't customize the Panther install as I wanted (because I didn't expect it to work). Not sure if I dare try wiping and reinstalling.
Obviously I'd feel happier knowing what the problem was/is. Looks like the AirPort card had something to do with it. But even when that was out the PB couldn't start from OS9. When formatting the drive (from OS X installer software) I'm sure I had the OS9 check box ticked. Even if I hadn't it wouldn't stop the OS9 CD working would it?; the hard drive just wouldn't appear once started up from the OS9 CD.
So I now have Panther up and running with both bits of memory in and the AirPort card in. I haven't messed around with/in Panther at all yet but on the face of it it seems fine.
Any ideas what the problem was/is? Any suggestions how to find out? Should I just ignore it and forget it ever happened (and cross my fingers and hope I never need to mess around with OS installs again)? Would be nice to know what's going on though. For a start it looks like if ever I want to install OS9 on it I won't be able to -- which actually may be something I want to do in the future possibly.
    Thanks.

  • Help!!  Suddenly..no airport hardware found!  Please help!

My 17" powerbook fell and now claims that no airport hardware can be found. I'm thinking the card dislodged or something but how do I re-secure it??
    Please help.

I don't think they do loaners, since I've never been able to get them to do that when I've asked, but you can sometimes ask for a replacement machine if the repairs have been enough that they can't solve the problem. Never wait for them to call you back. I've never gotten a call back. Hold onto a case number and if you need to reach them for any reason call them on the case number. We can't really discuss Apple policy here, though I can certainly tell you what I've experienced.
A loaner would technically be a machine you can borrow while yours is off to repairs. The machine you'd ask for a replacement would be yours to keep, and you'd never get back the original machine. Hence the good reason for a backup so you can restore to the replacement machine.

  • Zen Micro Photo "Hardware Problem&qu

I have a Zen Micro Photo purchased back in Christmas of 2006, and now when I boot it up, an error comes up saying that there is a "Hardware Problem." I am not able to do anything when this message appears, so I tried to safe boot it by holding the power switch while inserting the battery. This has not worked, and because the MP3 player is not recognized when it is plugged in to my computer, I can not run the troubleshooting software.
I have emailed customer support and since it is out of warranty, they cannot do anything and recommended that I try here next. Has this happened to anyone before?

"Hardware Problem" on the Zen Micro series of players is generally indicati've of a disk problem (usually a crash.) Some people replace the disk dri'ves on the Micro themselves. Others have found that since the dri've uses a Compact Flash interface, they can install a CF card, up to 32GB, in lieu of a disk dri've to transform the player to a much higher capacity player using flash memory that will not be as vulnerable to damage as a disk dri've.

  • Airport Hardware dissapeared

I own a DualCore 2.3ghz Powermac G5. As most of you know it came with Airport and Bluetooth 2.0 standard.
Today i was transfering some files (via our Airport Network) from our other 1.8ghz G5 to the DC2.3. I was transfering the file by mounting the Hard Drive of the 1.8 on the desktop of the DC2.3. About 15mins into the transfer an error occured and the transfer was stopped. I thought that maybe a restart was needed so i rebooted both of the computers. Upon the 1.8's restart i saw it was working fine and ready to transfer the files. Upon the DC2.3's restart i noticed that it could not connect or even find the 1.8 on our network. So i automatically looked up to the menu bar to check Airport status. The Airpor Status Menulet was gone completely. I went to the Network pane of Sys Prefs and saw that it said the Airport was off. Upon opening the Airport pane of Internet connect it said "No Airport Hardware Found". I looked at the Sys Profiler as well and it says that no Airport hardware is present on my computer....
...Any help or ideas would be much appreiciated. I'm trying to keep from freaking out over here....Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem with my G5 Quad a couple of months ago. The Airport hardware just dissapeared. The internet settings in system prefs said "no airport card detected" and I of course had one. The answer was a trip to the genius bar at Apple Retail and they replaced the airport card. It's worked fine every since. Hope this helps.

  • Airport Hardware Dissappeared - After iTunes 7.0 and QuickTime 7.1.3

    Hello,
On my powerbook G4, everything has been working great. I did a software update (via wireless connection) and iTunes 7.0 and QuickTime 7.1.3 were prompted. I went ahead with the update and performed the obligitory restart. After this reboot, the airport card hardware is no longer recognized.
In the log file during initiation when an internet connection is attempted, the following message occurs:
Internet Connect: WirelessAirPortDeviceNameCopy(): no AirPort drive found
I have tried many restarts (including a hard restart). I have reset the PRAM, and NVRAM but still nothing. This to me appears to be very much a software issue due to the circumstances. Are there any suggestions on how I may reinstall the airport driver or determine if there is a configuration problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    PowerBook G4 15" 1.5Ghz 1.5GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Built in Airport Card

I don't think this is an isolate issue, as I'm having the same problem. After the update my computer is now saying "Airport hardware not found" although I've been using it for almost 2 years now. I fixed it briefly by dragging some folder to the desktop as per advice on this site, but today it did the same thing. I was watching videos on MTV.com when an alert came up saying "Error, you need to restart your computer" and after I did my Airport hardware was "not found" again. Since I haven't dropped the computer and I wouldn't know how to take the card out if I wanted to, I don't think it's a simple issue of the card not being installed/connected properly. I'm open to any suggestions. I have the original disks that came with my computer, but I can't reinstall the software b/c the old software is still on there....

  • Airport Hardware disappeared

All of a sudden, my Airport could not find any wireless networks. I turned it on and off. Nothing happened. Reset my router, but that did nothing. So i restarted my computer and now that Airport card is gone.
Has anybody else had this happen?
I figure it might be bad hardware and need to be replaced, just owndering if anyone has come accross this.

Have you had any luck with this? I have been having a ton of crashes on my new (< 14 days old) MBP. No kernel panics as described in some of the other threads, just a hard lock-up of all applications (force-quit doesn't work, no mouse movement or keyboard response at all - the DVD drive won't even suck in a new disc).
This happens even after I did an 'erase & install' of OSX 10.4.8 off of the installation media - still no joy.
4 times and counting this morning in only 2 hours of using the laptop. I think thats some kind of a record, even when compared against a windows box.
Occasionally when this happens the machine will soft-restart after 20-30 seconds, and if that happens then the mac reports that there is no airport hardware present.
The diagnostics off of DVD1 of the install set does not report the airport - ever. Shows no other problems.
Apple support folks say I will most likely have to get the airport card replaced at the repair depot.
Anybody else having problems this severe?
    -bp
Ran the hardware test off dvd1, and the card was
still not showing up. even did the exteneded test.
Funny enough, after restarting the computer, the card
    was present.
I will keep an eye on it for the next few days to see
if it is acting up again.

  • Airport hardware has vanished off my system

    Here's the deal:
Yesterday morning I installed 1GB of RAM. There are two slots for RAM on my powerbook so I left the 512MB that was there and installed the 1GB in the second slot (it's directly below the first one). Everything seemed to be going hunky-dorey until I tried to register a product I had purchased and could not access the internet. I went into my network setting to see if the Airport had been turned off, but that was not the case. The Airport hardware has somehow vanished. I'm assuming this happened when I installed the RAM, but I don't quite know how to fix it.

Sorry, my error, I was looking at the General Instructions for a PowerBook G4. Your PowerBook's AirPort card is NOT user accessable, so that's not the problem. Your memory instructions are
linked here - "PowerBook G4 (17-inch): DIY Instructions"
Is your new memory showing in "About This Mac" or in System Profiler's Memory category? Perhaps it didn't fully seat when you installed it. Note the instructions say:
"pushing the card firmly until fully seated."

  • Airport utiity problem after upgrade

Just like to add another piece of information to the firmware issues.
After uppgrading Airport Utility to 5.4.1 I have problems reaching the manual settings. I tried with both Airport extreme and a new dual-band 1 TB TC (with either 7.4 or 7.4.1).
The TC has full functionality (WiFi and time machine). On a few occasions I have been able to reach the settings but only after rebooting the TC. If I reach the settings it will give me only one chance. Next time I try the utility will not let me in. The TC is always identified by the utility. It is only the manual settings that is stubborn.
    Apple, please!

Apple do not monitor this site, it's an user-to-user forum.
I would suggest you try direct Ethernet LAN connection. See if Airport Utility behave the same way. Then we can determine if it's a wireless problem or a hardware problem.

  • Imac G5 airport hardware no longer recognized

I have a 1st gen. imac G5. I've had it hard-connected to a network via ethernet. Before I moved, however, I used a wireless network. Lately, the computer fails to recognize that it even has wireless networking hardware. According to apple's website, I can change the airport card in this model, however after opening it up, it looked nothing like the illustrated instructions. There was no indication of airport hardware that I could fix/replace myself. Also, My computer has been have frequent "kernel panic" gray-screen-of-death issues at startup. I read briefly that this can have something to do with faulty wireless network software / hardware. Question: are these issues related? How can I fix my wireless problem? Thanks.

Are you sure you had the correct manual for your model computer?

  • New Airport Extreme problems or DSL router problems

    Hi all,
List of what I have: Time Warner Cable (motorola modem) DSL, Latest Airport Extreme (with 2.4Ghz channel 5 & 5GHz channel 149) with the updated version 7.6.1, 2008 MBP4,1 with 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now the problem, when I am on my MBP on the web internet slows to a stop, I will go to Systems Preferences, Network, (at this point Airport shows connected Full bars for the ant symble and a green light), then go to: Assist me... , I click Diagnostics, (On the left side) List: Airport (Green), Airport settings (green), Network Settings (green), ISP (either amber or red), Internet (either amber or red) and Server (amber or red).
So, basicly I keep looseing ISP, Internet and Server, now for the kicker, It does not happen every time i'm on my MBP or every day. But if it happens in the morning it will happen all day long.
This was happening with my old Airport Extreme so I up graded to the new one, worked without a problem for about a week, then started again reset & re installed several times changed channels (now back to default settings) I was hopeing that getting the new AE would take care of the problem so I coild start useing streaming TV but I'm not going to spend the money if I can't have the internet all the time.
By the way we just moved from one state to Maine never had this problem before, both area's are rural, & both are with TWC.
So the question is: do I have a TWC Modem problem or Airport Extreme Problem or is it just my MBP?
I have a Win7 desktop hard wired in, and my wife has an ipad2 but she is not home much and dosent seem to be around or on the web when this happens.
I am a serious NOVICE  so if you give advise please be very basic, Step by step!!!
    Thank you all in advance,

P.S. I do have my AE set to be hidden with WPA2 set and a discoverable Guest also with WPA2 set!!
