Troubleshooting Compressor on MacBreak

Hello all...
I don't want to seem as if I'm self promoting, but Alex Lindsey asked me to do a couple of episodes on Compressor with him on his web show Macbreak. The first one just aired, and my goal was to cover the most common problems experienced with Compressor (including Virtual Clusters) and how to address them:
http://pixelcorps.tv/macbreak89
I'll be doing more of these and I'll post them when they go live. Hope you all enjoy and find them useful.

Super cool, Brian!!!
I can't wait to see it, thanx!

  • Motion Presets affecting Compressor

Ok, My issue started with new project presets not being available. After doing some research, I found this in the forums, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306528 , this link being named "Motion 3: Project presets missing". I also noticed that after the first time I tried to install my presets were there and after trying to export using compressor I found a new problem, compressor was crashing as it went to the compressor interface. And after going through the troubleshooting compressor guide, shown here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302845 , Compressor was fixed but motion didn't have presets. The ultimate goal here is to have the bundle work together, and have the ability to have and see project presets and use compressor to export. Please, someone save me. Is it really this hard? Also I do not want to wipe my system, It's fine if motion doesn't have presets, but it is something apple should fix! Paid money over here for software that, well to say the least, isn't working as it should.
    Thanks
    Caelum

    Howdy,
It is pretty evil, as each of those articles has you follow steps that will break the other app. Here's what you can do to fix both: follow the Compressor fix steps, but before you do Step 10 (the reinstall), delete the Motion application from the /Applications directory. This will combine the results of both of the articles, and the reinstall should fix both Compressor and Motion.

  • Compressor 3.5 'my computer' cluster option missing

    Hello
I'm hoping someone can help me. I am using Compressor 3.5 and it's been working absolutely fine until today when I sent a project for FCP to compressor, added all my settings and destination, clicked submit but when the drop down box appears, the submit button is greyed out. For the 'cluster' option where it used to say 'my computer' now says 'none' and I can't seem to add anything here. I've tried the troubleshoot options of deleting caches for qmaster and compressed, deleting the 'com.apple.Compressor.CompressorSharedService.plist' and 'com.apple.compressor.Compressor.plist' etc but nothing seems to be working. I've tried googling this problem but I can't find a solution. I'm using a Mac OS X 10.9.4 (3.5 GHz intel Core i7)
Any help would be much appreciated
    Many thanks
    Kaylee

Oops! Forgot that Mavericks broke the Qmaster Preference Pane. You can still access it through the CLI (Command Line Interface), using Terminal. See this doc.
Alternatively, download and run the free and safe Compressor Repair form Digital Rebellion.
Let us know how you make out.

  • Render Benchmarks: GPU vs Quicktime X vs Compressor Quick Clusters vs Compressor distributed

I've been using Final Cut since the early days when Apple acquired the original technology and began bundling apps to create Final Cut Studio,  Along the way, I have used Compressor and now have the latest version installed.  I don't use Compressor much because I've always felt the performance and interface lagged behind third-party apps and now FCPX's GPU rendering.
I've been producing wedding videos for a while.  Due to the long form nature of the ceremonies and the various formats I provide (web/h264, DVD, Blu-ray), I'm even more eager to optimize my rendering times.
I have tried setting up QMaster clusters multiple times over the years but found they were characteristically unreliable and didn't want to spend a lot of time troubleshooting and nursing them.  With the addition of quick clusters in Compressor, I decided to give it a go again this past week.
I have 3 Macs on a gigabit LAN: 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 (8 threads), 2011 iMac i7 3.4 (8 threads), 2011 Mac Mini i5 (4 threads).  All have the same/latest version of ML, FCPX and Compressor.  The Mac Pro is my primary workstation: 24GB RAM, SSD boot drive, RAID0 Media drive for Projects and Events, ATI 5770 GPU.
I have a 50 min 1080 30p timeline with some mullticam clips, titles multiple audio tracks, CC, NR, etc.  After allowing FCPX to background render the entire Timeline (original media/high quality playback), I choose the Share button and send a 3 min segment to a PR422 1080 30p Master destination.
From FCPX shared to PR422 Master: 1:09
    Then the same segment:
From FCPX timeline shared to the default Compressor 1080p Apple Devices (10Mb) destination (not opening Compressor): 14:52
From FCPX timeline shared to Apple Devices 1080p Best Quality destination: 9:21
From Finder using the 3Min PR422 Master Segment file and the "Encode Selected Files" Service at 1080p: 3:50
From Quicktime X using the 3min PR422 Master segment file and 1080p Output format: 3:46
From Quicktime 7 Pro using the 3min PR422 Master segment file and 1080p Output format: 10:44
From Compressor using Apple Devices 1080p (10Mbps): 7:19
    Adobe Media Encoder CS6 using the 3Min PR422 Master segment file w/H264 2Pass VBR 10Target/12Max m192Kb Audio 1080 30p: 6:54
This segment was too short to get a reliable test using Compressor with my "This Computer+" distributed rendering but my tests showed that even with all available threads, the distributed rendering is much slower than GPU rendering or QTX encoding.  I have included screen composites here of the various output files, settings, CPU loads and utilized threads: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6tgamkjs5z2r6zv/Zg6zcyn3Ya
I realize this IS NOT scientific in that most of the tests have small variations in compression bit rates and 32 vs 64bit processes.  Regardless, I'm confident that for most circumstances, Compressor is slower than most other workflows.  I couldn't find a situation where I would want to use it.
Fastest hands-on workflow: Output a Master PR file then right click the file in Finder and encode to 1080p, about 5min total.
As a side note: Despite setting the quick clusters up by the book, I could never get the nodes to start rendering.  Interesting because I had no problems with "This Computer+" using the available nodes on my  LAN.
    Observations? Recommendations?

  • Compressor fails with Codec not installed error after 10.5.7 update

Problem: Compressor fails on submission to standard codecs such as H.264, Apple Intermediate Codec, Motion JPEG, etc. Codecs do exist on system as playback from QuickTime is unaffected. This is new behavior as of update to OS 10.5.7.
    Specs: 17" MackBook Pro, Compressor 3.0.5, QuickTime 7.6, OS X 10.5.7
Attempt to resolve: Tried completely uninstalling Compressor/QMaster and reinstalling from the FCStudio disc as per "Compressor: Troubleshooting basics" (Article: TS1888 - Old Article: 302845). This installed Compressor 3.0 which compressed a single mov then began failing on subsequent submissions. Updated 3.0 to 3.0.5 with no favorable results. Submissions continue to fail.
    Any ideas?

From my personal experience, the troubleshooting article which you mention in your original post does not constitute a "full uninstall". There are files missing from that list which are required for a full install.
Using the instructions in the link provided, I've been able to do multiple uninstalls & reinstalls successfully, not only with Compressor & QMaster, but with other Studio apps as well.
However, since there are codecs missing, you may need to do a full uninstall of Final Cut Studio. I personally haven't upgraded to 10.5.7 yet, since I'm currently in the middle of some projects, but it would be worth mentioning that before any kind of software upgrades, all of our system drives get a full backup. This allows us a way to "undo" any bad upgrade.

  • I updated compressor and now it will not open!

When the automatic Updates available came up this morning I updated.
Compressor was one of them and now it will not open. Compressor opens for a second and then goes away. Is there any way to UNDO UPDATES??

  • Compressor not outputting DVD even after numerous fixes attempted

I’m having problems getting Compressor 3.5 to output a DVD.  Source file is a 135GB ProRes 422 HQ Quicktime file at 1920x1080 resolution -- it’s the final cut of my 106-minute feature film.  I’ve tried numerous solutions to the problem described below but nothing works.
Last year after outputting the film’s rough cut to DVD, I was unhappy with artifacts, so I put off further DVD outputs and used Compressor’s Blu-ray template to output a BD-R screener (using default settings).  It looked great, and I used that same template to burn BD’s of the final cut.  But when attempting DVD output again, I decided (because of the artifact issue) to try this tutorial -- http://lumenosity.blogspot.com/2010/07/best-apple-compressor-settings-for-dvd.ht ml -- which the author claims produces excellent results, albeit with long encode times.  I tried his settings numerous times, and in each case, Compressor stopped/failed after about 10 mins. (it would encode the .ac3 audio but not the m2v video).
I installed and ran Digital Rebellion’s Compressor Repair (http://www.digitalrebellion.com/compressorrepair/) which made no difference.
I tried everything listed on Apple’s “Compressor 3.5: Troubleshooting Basics” support page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888), including reinstalling Compressor today. That hasn’t solved it.
I thought upgrading to Compressor 4 might solve the problem, but first had to upgrade the OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard, which I did today (I know, I'm behind in the OS, but my Mac Pro is a circa 2008 machine).  I still haven’t upgraded to Compressor 4, though, and wonder if that’s likely to make any difference.
A few hours ago I tried to output a 10-minute sample of the movie (still in ProRes 422 HQ format) to DVD via my newly re-installed Compressor 3.5, and using the “Burn DVD” template, and what should have taken 30 mins. (according to Compressor) was locked at 95% complete and hour and a half later.  When I cancelled, the m2v and ac3 streams were completed, but Compressor never asked for a blank DVD to complete the job.  I repeated the process and it failed again.
Now, BEFORE re-installing Compressor today, I did successfully output a 2 minute DVCPRO-HD file to DVD using Compressor’s “Burn DVD” template, but when I attempted to re-output that same file again later – after updating the OS and re-installing Compressor as described above – it failed just like the 10-minute sample movie above (locked at 95% complete).
And for what it's worth, I should mention that many times in the last year I’ve used Compressor 3.5’s “Create Web Reference Movie” template and it has always worked, though the History pane ALWAYS says it failed.
Thanks for any ideas on how to solve this mess.
    Mike

I moved on to uninstalling Compressor 3.5 using the instructions found here -- (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888) -- being very careful to follow it to the letter.  In fact, I followed all of the various solutions in that document, not just the uninstall and reinstall.  I re-installed Compressor 3.5 using the original FCS Studio 3 discs (upgrade version), and the process took several hours and asked for all FCS3's discs at various points (I was surprised it even asked for the Audio Content discs).
    Mike
It sounds like when the FCS re-install was run that the entire suite of software was installed. I'm surprised that could happen. I thought whatever apps the installation disk saw were already on the machine were automatically grayed out in the dialogue window.
You should be able choose only the applications you want to install, which would be Compressor and Qmaster. There should be no content disks involved and the whole process should take no more than 20 minutes.
Digital Rebellion makes a utility called FCS Remover. It removes the correct files automatically. Try running that and check Compressor and Qmaster only.
As for the reinstall, omly Compressor and Qmaster should be selected.

  • Compressor does not save files?

After searching the Compressor threads I have yet to find the answer to my issue.
Using Final Cut Pro 7.0.1, I imported footage shot on a Canon XL-1, edited it then exported to Compressor 3.5.1 (using the DVD Best Quality settings) to use it in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2.
The first few times I did it, it worked fine. Then, as I had to fix up the clip and re-export to Compressor, it would run normally, the Inspector doesn't show any mistakes or problems and it takes the average 40mins to an hour to work. But when it's done, the clip is nowhere to be found on the computer and the external drive.
I tried to re-export using 'Send-to/Compressor' and use different names to different folders, even to different drives, I also tried 'Share/DVD', 'Share/other' and 'Share/to Compressor' with no luck.
I get the same problem with different clips i.e.: Motion clips used in FCP to Compressor, 1min-45min-90min as well as 140min clips. I copied the exact file names, ran Compressor then copied the name in Finder to see where the file is going and it's not there.
From the threads I tried changing Targets from its preset to Cluster Storage, resetting the Background Processing for the Batch Monitor, changing priority from HIGH to MEDIUM, deleting the Finder Folder: and restarting the machine: I did those steps one at a time, then retried the export, then moved on to the other steps: I didn't do all of them at once.
I recently Zapped FCS2 from my iMac 24in 2.93GHz AND my MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, because I originally had an academic version, in order to install FCS3. Both machines are running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 with 4GB of RAM.
Sorry about the long explanation but I wanted to cover all the bases without wasting anyones time with troubleshooting already performed. I'll appreciate any help I can get as this project was due last week and I'm running out of excuses to give to the client!
    Thanks.

So I have a fix to this problem but not a permanent answer or solution yet. See link to other posting below, thanks.

  • Compressor opens but am not able to transfer files from FCP studio?

Help! I have tried installing FCP Studio (6.02) 2 to 3 times. I have tried removing Compressor from the Applications list under the library preferences.
When I open Final Cut and highlight the sequence and then send to to Compressor, I see the Compressor title open up at the top but my files do not appear. I don't know if its corrupt or if there is a reset to cause all the windows to appear. I am able to use the drop down list to make the inspector and other windows appear but cannot find my files.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Golfhacker

That signals a problem with QMaster, which is most likely something you didn't remove prior to your reinstall. Apple published a document to help troubleshoot this problem, which has been linked to numerous times on this forum.

  • FCP to Compressor meltdown: What does "User aborted Media Server" mean??

"Final Cut Pro generated an error or unexpectedly quit User aborted Media Server"
That's what I get every time I try to export an MPEG-2 from FCP via a Compressor QuickCluster. Always worked in the past, never works now. I don't recall changing anything. Anybody ever seen this before?

I FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.
    I followed Apple's troubleshooting article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302845
And the last step finally fixed the issue. That is, manually uninstall all Compressor and Qmaster application files and reinstall Compressor and Qmaster from the FCS2 discs. Then run Pro App updates. Everything is running smoothly now.
This process does however introduce a new bug in Motion, but I found a way to fix it here:

  • Compressor 4 crashes when adjusting filters

Compressor 4 has begun to crash every time I adjust filters. Otherwise it seems to work fine. It has all been working consistently with some pretty intense usage for the last two weeks, but now, all of a sudden, not. I have no problem outputting/rendering files (from FCPX) with the preset Settings or Custom Settings as long as I don't try and change any filter settings. I've repaired permissions but that has not made a difference. Any thoughts on what to do would be appreciated.

  • Aperture, iPhoto, Mail, FCP X, Motion and Compressor suddenly kaput!

Yesterday I discovered that Aperture and iPhoto, which I hadn't used for several weeks, were refusing to open and throwing up an error message saying there was a "problem and they probably weren't compatible with this version of the  operating system etc."
Shortly after, I discovered that Mail and the latest versions of FCP X, Compressor and Motion were also disabled.
After searching the internet/forums it appeared that this problem (with Aperture) could be caused by installing FCE 4, which I had done a week earlier and the only cure was to reinstall the OS.
I deleted FCE 4 and went through all the usual troubleshooting strategies to no avail so I reinstalled OS X 10.8.5 which which took less than an hour and luckily appears to have cured the problem. (I had been dreading reinstalling the OS  as I mistakenly assumed it would wipe all the apps and folders off my Mac ......... but of course it didn't.)
So has anyone had a similar experience or can shed any light on this?
Now I have to decide whether I dare reinstall FCE 4 ...........

Quite a few bug fixes, like the text position bug in Lion has been fixed.
Here's some from Tim Payton on the COW
    - During Playback, zooming the timeline with the keyboard doesn't send you to the end of the timeline
    - Scale controls on timeline now update live
    - Synchronize Clips now works if you have multiple non overlapping video clips for a single audio clip. (huge!)
    - Preroll and Post Roll settings in preferences work.
    - HDV Footage with "better performance" doesn't look nearly as bad. Way less flashing.
    - Timeline feels much snappier.
    - Timeline index now includes sortable columns: name, roles, & notes, and you can edit the values! (huge!)
    - Zooming on the timeline now really centers on the playhead if skimming off, skimmer if skimming on
    - Inspector updates more consistently to the clip selected.
    - Startup is much faster.

  • No compressor or mpeg2 export what next

OK enjoying new Intel Macpro, installed all my editing software, FCP 5.1.4, Motion, DVDSP 4, compressor 2. Lo and behold, big surprise, Compressor 'cannot connect to background process'. In the past this app has been a curse for me but I always had a QT mpeg2 export option so I reached for it and I no longer have it although I have QT pro.
Followed apples exhaustive and exhausting troubleshooting procedure ( into two days now with this painful goose chase )
updated everything but still 'cannot connect to background process'. Even exported a QT movie and tried importing it into Compressor but same result.
I imported the qt movie into DVDSP and it encoded it but I've no control over what its doing so what else are my options for encoding mpeg2?

  • Using Compressor to Export for DVD Duel Layer

I want to Compress for a DVD DL, but all the setting i see in compressor are set for a DVD-5 (4.7 G). How do i get it to be set of a DVD DL (8.5 G)? Please Help

    Jared,
There are several things to consider when creating a dual-layer disc. First, the first-layer needs to be larger than the second, even if by only one bit. DVDSP4 has the ability to automatically place the layer break in the appropriate place however, it's best to help the process by placing "cell" markers in the timeline at about the halfway mark of the data on your encode. This will help DVDSP find an appropriate place to create the layer-break.
Also, you can't use the entire 8.5GB on the disk; just like HDD's a portion of the actual data-space on the disk is taken up by metadata and MPEG-2 core files during the encode.
To really get a handle on how this all works - and to help with any troubleshooting I'd highly suggest these two books:
DVD Studio Pro 4; Martin Sitter and Adrian Ramseier and; Compressor 3 Quick Reference Guide, Brian Gary (who is a regular poster on these forums).
    Best wishes.

  • MPEG 2 failure on compressor export

I Have recently changed from using  single layer DVD to dual layer DVD and I've got some great results Using the send to compressor route and changing bit rates to suit.
however after about 4 successful projects burnt to DVD I'm now getting failures on all the mpeg2 ( video ) during the compression process from FCP 7 to comp 3.
the AC 3 audio comes out fine but every time the. Video is now failing and I can't see why.
    MY route is this:
    1. Export using send to compressor in FCP 7.
    2. In compressor I select preset apple DVD 150 mins all
    3. I then select video file and change max & min bit rates to 7.2 & 5.5.
    4. Submit.
audio takes about 25 mins to complete and video fails every time.
cant work out where I'm going wrong as the first 4 projects were fine, now nothing !
dont want to go back to 4.7 GB's discs as the quality is so much better with dual layer.
can anyone help with this strange problem?
these are wedding DVDs and are both 2 hr 30 mins long roughly
    thanks in advance

In order to troubleshoot, first, fully render your sequence in fcp, then export a selfcontained quicktime with current settings from frcp (file:  export:  quicktime movie NOT quicktime conversion) and bring that file into compressor.  This will hopefully help isolate the source of the problem.
The other advantage of using this workflow is that you can enable qmaster to greatly speed up the processing time in compressor
