Troubleshooting Firefox 3, and FF3+Vimperator

Free time has been a luxury lately and since upgrading to Minefield I've encountered a bunch of weird things that I'm only now finding time to troubleshoot.  I am wondering if anyone else is suffering from these and whether there might be a cure. I have searched the forums, but answers seem in short supply.
I'll preface this by saying that last week I created a fresh FF profile in hopes of fixing some of the following--it didn't help.  I've also toggled all extensions to see if that helps--it hasn't.
1. Firefox ignores desktop placement rules
Under Openbox I cannot get FF3 to respect my desktop rule of loading on Desktop 2. Instead, it loads on whatever desktop I happen to be viewing.
2. Firefox jumps desktops when links are clicked.
If FF3 is already open on Desktop 2 and I click a link in my terminal on Desktop 1, FF3 will jump to Desktop 1 and open the link there.
3. Constantly logged out of iGoogle (homepage)
Also new to FF3, when I close the browser I am logged out of iGoogle, which is my homepage. This happens with and without Vimperator enabled (I'm aware of Vimperator's session behaviour). The only way around this is to close the browser while actually viewing iGoogle.
4. Vimperator steals focus from form boxes
I know this was a problem that plagued earlier versions of Vimperator, but it seems to have returned in FF3. I normally use CTRL+k to access the google search box, however with Vimperator enabled it throws me into command mode.  I've tried the escape key sequences too, to no avail.  In general, I seem to be fighting with Vimperator whenever I want to type in a form box (not just the search box.)
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, though I'm surely forgetting something else. Has anyone else wrestled with these and won?

Try :noremap <C-k> <C-v><A-d><Tab>
The newest version of Vimperator has changed alot of it's keybindings.
Worked like a charm, thanks!
miggy wrote:1. desktop placement (maybe)
Not sure this is your issue...with FF2 I had set rules with "firefox" or maybe it was "firefox-bin" but with FF3 I've had to change the rules to "Minefield."  Not sure if openbox works a similar way...
Yeah, I had already updated my rules with "Minefield", and also tried Navigator, as the name value.  Neither have worked unfortunately. Thanks though!

  • Why can i not fix firefox hanging and unresponsive using firefox troubleshooting methods

    Hi
Every web page i open/use, Firefox hangs and becomes unresponsive. It does this 10 times or more while i am trying to browse. I have gone through every step in the troubleshooting issues one by one and several times. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox several times. I have checked CPU, RAM and every other three letters available.
It has hung, been unresponsive, and had white screen 15 times+ while i have been writing this.
I have had my computer taken away and looked at by computer techs, they say it is fine now. No viruses, relevant Malware and relevant security attached.
I use windows 7 premium. This has all just started in the past few months. Laptop is only 18 months old.

Have you tried to disable hardware acceleration?
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • I click on firefox icon and this pops up: firefix.exe - Bad Image I can't even open it to click on any of troubleshooting ideas

I have already turned my computer on and off 5x. Each time I click on firefox icon this box pops up:
C:\Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Firefox\mozglue.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. (This came with the laptop and I have no idea who a system administrator is) While I was just on-line the computer locked up then it said it was doing updates. I closed the computer down and now when I try and open it the above happens. Mozilla is my home page. I was able to click on internet explorer to get to this stage.

do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.
    *C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 16.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

  • How do I block an ad that opens up a new Firefox window and keeps telling me my system performance is poor? I can't even capture the link.

This particular ad, supposedly from a Windows Certified Partner, opens in a second Firefox window and keeps flashing the message that my System Performance is Poor, wanting me to click on their ad and let them do whatever nasty things they want to my system. I have not been able to capture the path but next time it comes up, I will write down all that I can see.
If I have closed my main Firefox screen first, and then close out this ad, the next time I open Firefox, the ad opens and all my standard tabs are gone, requiring me to reopen each one seperately (Facebook, Google, etc).

Just to address the last point: check your History menu to see whether you have the Restore Previous Session option and use that if you can. If that is grayed out or doesn't restore everything, check the Recently Closed Windows and Recently Closed Tabs lists for other pages.
The unwanted window may be generated by an add-on. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
Here are some other things to check:
    (1) user.js file that changes Firefox startup behavior and overrides your preferences. This article describes how to track that down and delete it if you have one: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    (2) Possible hijacked shortcut. Check the "target" of the desktop icon you use to start Firefox to see whether it lists the unwanted page. To do that:
right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
For 64-bit Windows 7, the Target should be no more and no less than this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    (3) Possible undisclosed bundle items. If you have installed any free software recently, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a program for surprises. If you click the "Installed on" column head to group by date, it is easier to spot bundled junk. Remove everything suspicious or unrecognized.
    (4) Supplemental clean up scans. Our support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
    Hopefully that cures it.

  • Why are keywords for Delicious bookmarks no longer recognized in Firefox 25 and Firefox 26?

I use Delicious Bookmarks 2.3.4 for synchronizing bookmarks and their keywords on different computers. After updating to Firefox 25 the keywords are no longer recognized. If I enter a keyword like "foo" it doesn't send me to the bookmark with the keyword but starts a google search for "foo". When I downgrade to Firefox 24 it works again.
Was this change introduced by purpose (like the keyword search removal in FF 23) or is this only some side effect?
Is there any way to get rid of this problem and have that feature again?

That would be a question for Delicious support or Help.
Have you tried some basic Firefox troubleshooting, like the Firefox SafeMode? <br />
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
Firefox 25 was released 6 1/2 weeks ago and this is the first mention I have seen in this forum about Delicious keywords no longer working in Firefox 25 and above.

  • Since I downloaded the firefox update I no longer have the firefox screen and not all my bookmarks will work. Why?

After I downloaded the latest update firefox as I knew it disappeared. The opening screen no longer shows the fox logo. The search box on the toolbar lists as conduit search. And I am finding that not all my bookmarks still work. Example-I have to go to att to access my mail. That is fine if that is the way it is supposed to work but if so I would like to know how to change my home screen--or at least the first thing I see when firefox opens to the att site as I generally use my computer for email. I am also accustomed to using google search and as I am a crazy old cat lady I am not really ready to change the way I am familiar with my computer.
Ideally, could I get the fox picture screen with the google search and the ability to click on the bookmark labeled mail back on my computer???
I am not computer literate unless it acts as it always has. Thanks, Dawn

hello dawn, please be aware that there are malicious websites out there which will trigger fake update notices/popups which try to trick you into downloading software bundled with adware. please never click on such websites or execute such files on offer - updates are handled automatically by firefox and you don't have to download any file for it (you can always manually check if you're up-to-date by going to ''firefox > help > about firefox'').
please try these steps to regain your firefox:
    # [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
    # afterwards go to firefox > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
    # go to the windows control panel and remove all software recently installed where you don't know which purpose it has or otherwise looks suspicious.
    # finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] to make sure that adware isn't present in other places of your system as well.

  • I wont to use IE for some pages and Firefox for others, but when I enter a url in IE, Firefox loads and opens the page

I use IE 8 and the latest version of Firefox in XP.
I'm a web designer and I want to test pages in both explorers but sometime i enter a URL in IE and Firefox opens and loads the page. How can I stop this happening?

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Website_colors_are_wrong
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]

  • After I downloaded Firefox 4 and I try to open Firefox, I get this error message, "plug-in object: TypeError: Components.classes[cid] is undefined". I click "OK"; Firefox opens and works just fine. Any suggestions??

Not much to add. Before Firefox will open, I get this error message, "plug-in object: TypeError: Components.classes[cid] is undefined". I click the "OK" button; Firefox opens and I have no further problems.
I use an Apple with OS v. 10.6.7 and had no problems until I downloaded Firefox 4.0

That indicates you have an add-on that is not compatible with Firefox 4. For details of how to troubleshoot that see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

  • I d/l your mozilla firefox today and now I get the error 0x80070002 all the time...how do I fix that?

I downloaded mozilla firefox today and now I get the error 0x80070002 all the time, and I cannot use system restore because of it. How do I fix that so that my computer works right again. I was restoring because after I d/l your mozilla today, I lost all of my contacts in my msn email...just been tearing my hair out over this and it is soo darn frustrating. Tell me how to fix this. Marilyn

    Hi,
The error is totally unrelated to Firefox. Please see [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336 this]. The [http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us Windows OS forum] will also be helpful.
Please also check the downloaded file by right-clicking > Properties > Digital Signatures, which should say '''Mozilla Corporation''' and '''This digital signature is ok''' in '''Details'''. You can download Firefox from a known site like e.g. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
You can try to Reset Firefox which would hopefully display the missing features, all (contacts, emails, settings etc.) of which are actually stored at the MSN site and are temporarily displayed by Firefox every time the site is accessed.
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • Firefox lags and freezes several times in an hour - How to fix?

I've read up on the forums and nothing seems to be describing what I'm experiencing with Firefox.
The last 3-4 days I've had several instances where Firefox lags or completely freezes up when switching between tabs. It will still somewhat work but it's ridiculously slow.
For example, it WILL eventually go to that tab, but it will take a minute, and then nothing on the page will work for a minute, so on and so on. Sometimes a black screen will appear where the text should be. Sometimes it stays black, sometimes the page eventually loads. It was only one website so I thought maybe that page was having issues until today when it started happening on several other websites.
It's happening quite often and it's driving me crazy. I only had an error message once, early on when this started. Since then it just seems to lag and freeze, lag and freeze, over and over without giving me an error message until I get fed up and close out of it. Upon start up again, it works fine for a bit.
I don't use any toolbars. I updated Windows and my drivers. Computer has been restarted several times since this started.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Hello EMA1, try to run [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode firefox in safe mode], works ?

  • Firefox freezes and stops responding even after reinstall

Hi, I've been a Firefox user for a decade, despite three attempts to switch to Chrome. But this is getting on my nerves. I'm in the middle of something and suddenly the browser freezes - I can move the cursor over whatever bookmarks, menu items, tabs or content but nothing responds. It's exactly as if the entire browser had turned into a printscreen. I get no crash report afterwards, I just close and restart it. This has been going on for quite a few months now. I'm using the latest version by the way.
    Extensions I use:
    Adblock
    Colorzilla
    Diigo Toolbar
    Evernote webclipper
    Fireshot
    Pin It buton
    Video Download helper
    Wisestamp
    Lazarus Form Recovery
And quite a few other plugins.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. also, any luck if you delete in your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Windows profile folder] the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file User.js file] you have ?
The user.js file '''does not exist by default'''. If you create the file, forget it, if you have not create the file then delete the User.js file, to see if the problem goes away (some programs create and write in the file also).
