  • Troubleshooting an Imac G5 that won't mount on host computer in target mode.

I believe the internal harddrive on my Imac G5 has failed as the computer is stuck on a gray screen at startup and I am unable to repair the disk using disk utility on the OSX installation cd. I have the machine connected to another working mac with a firewire cable and am attempting to access the harddrive through target mode. The non-working mac starts in target mode but does not mount on the host computer. How can this be troubleshooted?

Make sure you start the G5 iMac in Target Disk Mode first, then connect it to the other Mac.  If that doesn't work then, I'm pretty certain the hard disk is dead.
    Sorry.
    Good luck.

  • Help me troubleshoot my iMac | random SPOD and freezes

ok, I am 1 step away from literally throwing this iMac out the window, but maybe someone has got an advice before I do so.
In the beginning of 2009, my iMac's harddrive went bad.
I was able to rescue everything via target mode so no big deal. I went and bought a new harddrive for it and replaced it myself. I found a very good guide for the whole procedure and after that I installed a fresh copy of OSX 10.4 on it.
Since then the system would start to do random freezes, sometimes for all running applications, and sometimes for just one or two simultaneously.
The freezes normally lasts between 10 seconds to 4 minutes and I have so far (1 year later) not been able to discover any kind of logic/pattern in these freezes.
Sometimes I can run a plethora of programs at the same time (iMovie, Photoshop, Quicktime, Safari, Pages etc) and everything goes fine for hours. Some times it will take me minutes to just launch Safari or Textmate.
Now, it isn't as though I haven't tried doing anything about it, it just that so far nothing have worked out.
Here is a list of things I have tried since it started in 2009
    - Running Repair Permissions (Disk Utility or holding down SHIFT when booting)
    - Running maintenance programs like Onyx, MacJanitor, Maintenance, iTools
    - Fixing font issues using FontBook, LinoType and FontNuke
    - Replacing/Upgrading RAM (I went from 1gb to 3gb)
    - Testing RAM with memtest
    - Running Disk Warrior
    - Disabling various processes/services (spotlight/mds etc.)
    - Uninstalling/upgrading/downgrading programs (mostly programs that I use alot like Firefox and Safari)
    - Upgrading the OS (first to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard)
    - Re-installing OS X (I have tried different combinations like re-installing to Tiger, then upgrading to Leopard and SL, re-installing to Leopard without upgrading etc.)
There might be more but I really cannot remember.
Of course my focus has been mainly on the harddrive itself since this was the piece that got replaced, but everytime I run Disk Warrior or Onyx or any other diagnostics app I have come across, I am told that the harddrive is doing fine.
In the middle of 2009 I then created a 50gb partition on which I installed Win XP. This was because of some work related software that I needed to run. Now, on Win XP I have yet to experience any problems relating to the one I have on OSX. (Of course there are problems with Win XP, but none of them were relating to my specific issue here).
So as it is right now, and have been for too long, I'm better off running Win XP than I am running SL, and that just ****** me off..!
Does anyone here have an idea about what to do next?
I have thought about buying a new harddrive to replace the initial replacement drive, but if that is the only choice I have left, I would rather save up for a new iMac instead.
I have already spent more than enough trying to fix this one.
Here are some details about the system:
    Model-id: iMac5,1
Processor name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor speed: 2.16 GHz
    Processors: 1
    Cores: 2
    L2-buffer: 4 MB
    Memory: 3 GB
    Bus speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM-version: IM51.0090.B09
    SMC Version: 1.9f4
    OS Version: 10.6.2
Some of these are roughly translated by me from Danish.
Thanks to the people still reading this.

    Hi Kguy,
    Thank you for the reply.
The freezes happens when opening programs and when running them. And it happens with (as far as I know) all programs on the computer (including TimeMachine, Dashboard apps, Finder, login in/logging out etc.)
As far as I know this is not related to my network, but I will try you suggestion and disconnect the computer fully before running programs on the computer.
Sometimes when the freezes happen, everything on the computer freezes, even the seconds on the clock.
And if I am watching something in Quicktime/VLC/DivX and a freeze happens. After the freeze is over Quicktime will then resume x amount of time later in the movie. Where x is equal to the amount of time the froze lasted.
    Hope this helps clarifying

  • What's wrong? Kernel panic when I try to reinstall my iMac G4

Hello everyone. This is my last ditch effort to salvage something from my iMac G4 before I bin it.
To cut a long story short, the iMac was misbehaving, so I wiped its hard drive using target disk mode, and now, when I try to reinstall it using the original system disk, it immediately goes to a kernel panic and tells me to restart. The hardware test tells me that everything's OK. So... what next?
I've tried reinstalling using target disk mode, but it didn't work (nothing happened, I'm assuming because my new machine is an Intel while the iMac is a Power PC...)
Any helpful suggestions would be gratefully received.

Given the age of the unit, there is a possibility that the internal
hard disk drive may have failed. Sometimes, those will not show
on the Apple Hardware Test. But there are times when the booted
Disk Utility version on the Installer disc may note a problem in the
hard disk drive, via the SMART status of that hard drive.
Even that may not indicate an actual failure of the drive, after it has.
But kernel panics can be caused by several items, especially in an
older computer that has been around awhile. Some of those have a
    history of a kernel panic relating to the logic board or other circuit;
and bad RAM is one of the causes of hardware related KPs.
If you can boot the computer from the Installer disc and run Disk Utility
from its options in the Installer header menu, the problem may be with
the internal hard disk drive. The unit may require further troubleshooting.
You may be able to find interested persons locally through a Mac user
group or someone at an affiliated service department who handles them.
Also, there are regional or local online listings for selling items where you
would actually meet the buyer or seller, often in a third or neutral location.
There are some fair take-apart links, some posted to these Discussions,
    showing how to replace a hard disk drive, internal RAM, and optical drive;
and some users may also know of a source for more technical manuals.
If you had an external FireWire enclosure for a boot capable hard disk drive
you could try to further troubleshoot the iMac G4; set up correctly, you could
install OS X to an external drive. Not all FireWire HDD units are boot-capable.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IMac screen is dark

The screen is dark on my 2006 iMac.  Is there a way to reset or do I need a new part?  Also, what cable do I need to connect it to a MacBook Pro to recover data?

    Hi mgtrumpet,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend using the steps in this article to troubleshoot your iMac, starting with the "No video..." section:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
If necessary, try using Target Disk Mode to recover the files on your iMac using the MacBook Pro. See these articles for more information:
OS X Mavericks: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode

  • IMac crashes at start-up

    Hi,
    So this is my problem:
I turn my iMac on, then it chimes and the grey screen with the Apple logo appears.
    Everything fine till now.
Then suddenly, it just switches off.
So I turn it on again, but while it chimes, it makes a loud noise like a propeller is spinning or something. The apple logo appears, and, it turns itself off again.
So I leave it. But after 5 minutes, it turns itself on (by itself), makes a loud, long beep and then a grey screen appears, welcoming me to "Apple Open Firmware" and telling me to either type "mac-boot" or "shutdown".
I typed "shutdown" and plugged it out of electricity, because I don't know what to do!
    Does someone have any idea?
    Thanks a lot,
    Ferdinand

The computer probably needs to have some hardware testing
done to see the extent of the possible situation and to get an
idea of an estimate of the problem and costs of a cure.
    Could be something relatively simple for the age of the computer;
since hard disk drives do wear out. Or it may be something else.
There is a reset button for the Power Management Unit, under
the metal disc on the bottom of the computer. Finding the button
may be a trick, since it is sort of hidden in plain sight...
"Resetting the iMac (G4 flat panel) Power Management Unit - PMU"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95165
An expert, an authorized tech with experience in these matters
should be able to give you an idea; and depending on your own
options, a repair may be one of several possible paths. Some
resellers and small shops have restored computers for sale; and
then there are also some good products in both Apple Certified
refurbished (online store) and in the newest Apple products, too.
Some times, the retail store in some towns may have older items
for sale at a price not reflecting the latest values; so an all new
item could sometimes be bought for a great price, with warranty.
And in some cases, a company may specialize in repairing the
compact and portable computers and have some on hand for
a price comparable to the repair estimate; for a newer computer.
I'd suspect the computer's hard disk drive, first. Then maybe other
possible items. A good tech could troubleshoot the iMac in maybe
an hour of shop time and give you an estimate; you'd have to be
able to leave the computer where this could be done. Some of the
certified repair techs have been less than interested in repairing
the iMac G4; and independent shops vary across the country.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • ICloud Prefs problem on iMac

I'm troubleshooting an iMac in our office. When I go to Sys Pref > iCloud > there is no "Documents and Data" in the list. The user is logged in with her Apple ID. Where did it go? How do I get it back?
    running v 10.10.1

There is none. Turn on the iCloud Drive option. However, it will only work with iDevices running iOS 8. Be sure they are upgraded before activating iCloud Drive.

  • Periodic iChat audio dropouts over Airport on Intel iMac

When chatting with iChat, an audio dropout occurs exactly every 5 minutes on my new Intel iMac. iChat's Connection Doctor shows total loss of receive audio signal quality (and a halving of the receive bit rate) for about 5-10 seconds. Then normal operation resumes for 5 minutes and the problem repeats. This only occurs while using iChat over Airport. I can also force this audio dropout behavior at any time by clicking on the Airport status icon on the menubar. I wonder if others are having this problem or is this an isolated problem with my computer?
It took me a while to recognize that this wasn't a network problem causing occasional audio dropouts. My wireless D-Link router isn't the culprit as my G4 iMac and G3 laptop don't exhibit the problem through the router. Also, when connecting from the Intel iMac to any of the other nearby Macs using a computer to computer Bonjour wireless connection (thus eliminating the router) the dropouts do occur. After connecting, the dropout always occurs at a random time between 0 and 5 minutes but thereafter it occurs at exactly 5 minute intervals. If I click on the Airport status icon to force the audio dropout, the next dropout will occur 5 minutes later.
I also have a new Intel Mac Mini which doesn't exhibit the periodic audio dropout problem but does have a similar audio dropout whenever I click on the Airport status icon. The dropout lasts longer on the Mini - about 15 seconds average before the audio signal quality fully recovers. Because the periodic dropout doesn't happen on the Mini, it isn't really an operational problem, but it is instructive to note that only the Intel Macs exhibit this particular behavior.
In troubleshooting the iMac, I have turned off all timing related items that I can think of including, Mail (check manually), Set Date and Time Automatically (OFF), all sleep, hard drive and screen timers OFF, all iCal reminders OFF, etc. I have also turned all Dashboard Widgets OFF, corrected permissions, tried a different user ID, reset the NVRAM and SMC. I have even tried setting the iChat app to open as a Rosetta app . Nothing has solved this problem yet.
The iMac is a dual core 20" with 1.5 GB of RAM and the Mini is a dual core with 512 MB of RAM. Both are running Tiger 10.4.5 Wireless signal level in all tests is 100 percent.
    Thanks for any help.
    Bill

OK, I have my Intel iMac connected to the Internet via an Ethernet converter. What this means is that the iMac is connected via Ethernet cable to the Ethernet converter, which, in turn, communicates wirelessly with a wireless router.
This seems to clearly solve the wireless connection audio issue as the Intel iMac thinks it has only an Ethernet connection. There is no audio dropout after five minutes or so, but there may be other Mac to Mac connection issues related to Intel Macs.
I'm going to run with this connection for awhile to see if there are other problems, but this seems to be a good workaround for the moment. I'm using a Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP Ethernet converter, which costs about $60 USD at most online vendors in the US.
Although $60 may seem like a lot of money to spend on an Apple-created problem, using the Buffalo high power device is almost surely going to provide significantly better wireless range. This increased range advantage may be enough to offset a large part or all of the $60 cost.

  • Events added to iPhone 5 calendar not syncing on iMac

Whenever I add an event to iPhone 5 calendar, it doesn't sync on my iMac (but if I add an event on my iMac calendar, that DOES sync onto iPhone). icloud setting for mail are on.

    Hi thewomandirector,
For calendar events that are not syncing from your iPhone to your iMac, I recommend this troubleshooting article:
    iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3999
I recommend troubleshooting the iMac first and then, if necessary, the iPhone.  You can also check iCloud.com to see if the iPhone-added events are making it that far.

  • Cursor and Menus jump

    Hello
My cursor Stumbles, staggers and jumps. Menus don't stay open long enough to make a selection.
Here's what I've done: cleaned the mouse
ran Disk Utility and Tech Tool
shut down the computer, then unplugged it.
All of this resulted in SOME improvement, On a scale of 1-10, it used to be 10- now it's 8.
My hard drive still has 60 GB. Where did I go wrong
    Thanks Joanne

    Hi Joanne
If you had said that it was only the cursor acting up, I would have recommended checking for a dust bunny, a hair, dirt or something blocking the Optical sensor and then using a plain colored matte mouse pad instead of a glossy or wildly printed one.
However, because you are also having problems with the menu's closing I think that the mouse may also have an internal problem.
First I would try another mouse, almost any inexpensive USB mouse will work fine for the purpose of testing and troubleshooting the iMac.
Second I'm not sure exactly which mouse you have, but if it is the one that came with your iMac and you have Apple Care, then it would also be covered under you iMac's extended hardware warranty for 3 full years. > https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

  • COVER FLOW EATS MEMORY

After hours and hours of troubleshooting my iMac with Leopard the following is definite:
With ACTIVITY MONITOR running and COVER FLOW used in FINDER the iMAC continually eats up system memory. In addition, the FINDER process increases memory usage as well.
FINDER can be force quit and then relaunched to clear its memory usage (which continues to increase as file browsing with COVER FLOW continues) but SYSTEM MEMORY is not freed after a relaunch of FINDER.
I ended up running w/ 2.5 gigs RAM usage when COVER FLOW was enabled regardless of program usage, etc....and the usage would hardly come down
There is a definite MEMORY MANAGEMENT issue with COVER FLOW.
Be warned. Check it out yourself. Apple, please fix these issues....soon.

I am noticing some increased memory, one of the bigger things that I am seeing is a greater processor load from the Quick Look Server process. I have also noticed that this process is only noticeable when in cover flow mode.
in addition to this I have noticed a much large CPU usage when the files being displayed are video files. in some cases windows media files and also files that quicktime would load.
doing some tests I have found that the format of the video files does effect the CPU usage.
mp4 files seem to be the fasest
    mov files behind that
    avi files next
wmv files (assume Flip4Mac is installed.)
also it does not seem that the Quick Look Server is doing any caching, load the directory let the cover flow view fully load (Quick Look Server process is not in the top processes list). click on a different directory let the cover flow view fully load(Quick Look Server process is not in the top processes list). click on the original directory, Quick Look Server appears to do the loading work again.
    is anyone else seeing this?

  • My calenders on 2 phone \, ipad and computer on cloud never match

I have [roblems with my calenders matching on a iphone 4, iphone 5, ipad, imac desk top, and ibook pro.  Event i enter on one does not alway go to others, but does some time.  By the way i am legally blind so i am slow at typing

    Hello jlc644,
I was looking into possible causes for intermitent calendar syncing across mulitple devices and found an article that outlines how to troubleshoot this type of issue. It is named iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Calendar found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3999. It is a LOT of information so do take your time as you go through it.
    For troubleshooting the iMac,
    General Troubleshooting
Make sure there are no current issues listed on the System Status that affect iCloud Calendar. The System Status is located on the iCloud Support webpage.
Make sure you have fully enabled iCloud Calendar for the client you are using (for more setup and troubleshooting information on iOS, OS X, Windows and iCloud.com, see the additional details below).
Check to see if the issue you are seeing is covered in iCloud Help. To search iCloud Help, visit help.apple.com/icloud.
Check your settings and preferences as something may not be set up correctly. For example, having incorrect date and time settings can cause issues which are easily resolved by entering the appropriate settings.
Troubleshooting Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion (iCal on OS X Lion)Note: For instructions on setting up iCloud Calendar with Calendar or iCal on your Mac, see iCloud Setup. If you are having trouble with Calendar or iCal on a Mac and you are using iCloud Calendar, try each of these steps, testing after each to see if the issue is resolved:
Make sure you are using OS X Lion v10.7.2 or later. Click here for help verifying the version of OS X you are using.
Make sure your computer is online. Attempt to view www.apple.com and iCloud.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud calendars and events will not update in iCal. Click here for more information about troubleshooting your Internet connection.
Verify that your iCloud member name is entered into the iCloud Preference pane in System Preferences. See iCloud Setup for more information about setting up iCloud on a Mac.
Make sure you enter and update calendar information in the iCloud section of Calendar or iCal. Only calendars and events in the iCloud section of the Calendar or iCal Calendar list will be pushed to iCloud. Both Calendar and iCal for the Mac support the display of and interaction with multiple accounts and datastores, for example, iCloud, On My Mac, Exchange, Google, and so on. This makes it easy to create or modify events or calendars in a section of  Calendar or iCal that may not be updating iCloud. Learn more about moving local calendars to iCloud.
In some cases, you may find that you have data duplicated in both the local On My Mac and the iCloud sections of Calendar or iCal. Learn more about resolving this issue.
You can make the iCloud calendar your default calendar for all new events. In Calendar on OS X Mountain Lion, choose Calendar > Preferences > General, or in OS X Lion, choose iCal > Preferences > Generaland under the Default Calendar heading, select one of the Calendars under the iCloud heading. Close the Preferences window to save this change.
If recent changes simply don't appear, try forcing Calendar or iCal to refresh by selecting Refresh All from theCalendar menu.
Make sure your account was successfully created in Calendar on your Mac (or iCal). After upgrading to iCloud Calendar, you may need to quit and reopen Calendar (or iCal). To confirm your account is configured correctly in iCal:
    Open Calendar (or iCal).
    Open Calendar (or iCal) Preferences.
Click Accounts. You should see an account with your iCloud member name entered.
Turn iCloud Calendars off and back on
    Quit Calendar (or iCal).
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences > iCloud.
Remove the checkmark in the checkbox next to Calendars.
Close System Preferences and wait about a minute.
Open System Preferences and choose iCloud.
Replace the checkmark next to Calendars.
    Close System Preferences.
Open Calendar (or iCal) and test to see if the issue has been resolved.
Restart your computer. This may sound simple, but it does reinitialize your network and application settings and can frequently resolve issues.
And for troubleshooting on iOS devices,
    Troubleshooting iOS devices
If you are having trouble with the Calendar app on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) and iCloud Calendar, try each of these steps, testing after each to see if the issue is resolved:
Make sure you've updated to iOS 5 or later and that your iCloud account is configured correctly in Settings. For instructions on setting up the iOS for iCloud, see iCloud Setup.
Make sure your iOS device is online. Attempt to view www.apple.com and iCloud.com in Safari. If you can't connect to the Internet, your iCloud calendars and events will not update in your Calendar application. Click here for more information about troubleshooting your internet connection.
Open a secure website from your iOS device to test if you are online as is necessary for iCloud Calendar. This also tests if ports 80 and 443 are accessible. Calendar requires port 443 access to iCloud in order to push and pull updates to and from the iCloud Calendar servers.
If recent changes simply don't appear in Calendar, try forcing a refresh by tapping Calendars in the top-left corner of Calendar to load the Calendars list. Then, tap the Refresh button in the lower-left corner of the Calendars list window.
If you add new events on your iOS device, but they do not move to iCloud or other devices, you may want to verify your Default Calendar settings. If you would like to create new events in a specific iCloud calendar, then set that calendar to be your Default Calendar. You can modify the Default Calendar settings in iOS at Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Default Calendar.
Quit and restart the Calendar app on your iOS device:
    Press the Home button.
Double-press the Home button to open the multitasking menu.
Tap and hold the Calendar icon until it jiggles.
Tap the "X" to remove it from the list.
Press the Home button to get back to your Home screen. Wait a minute before reopening the Calendar app.
Restart your iOS device by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and then swiping the screen when prompted to Turn Off. This may sound simple, but it does reinitialize your network and application settings and can frequently resolve issues.
Change the Sync settings for your calendars:
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Scroll down to the bottom.
    Tap Calendars > Sync.
If sync is set to All Events, set it to a specific duration, such as Events 1 Month Back. If it's set to a specific duration, set to All Events.
Wait several minutes and try Refreshing Calendar again.
Turn iCloud Calendar off and back on:
    Tap Settings > iCloud.
Tap the Calendar slider off. Choose to delete data only if your data exists at icloud.com/calendar and/or one or more of your computers. Otherwise choose Keep Data.
Wait a few minutes before turning the Calendar slider back on.
    Regards,

  • Out of application memory

Been troubleshooting an iMac 27" Mid 2011 for friends with a design studio. The machine was running out of application memory in seconds despite having 12 GB ram and lots of free disk space. I've seen reports of similar problems with Mavericks setups. I have been an Apple dev since 1987 and have seen a lot, but this is the worst I've seen. I have been able to calm it down a little, but it is still not 100%. The machine in question qualified for a new logic board and video card update which was duly installed by Apple certified techs. It has spent hours running diagnostic checks. At one stage it refused to turn on, took it back to the repair shop. They plugged it in and it worked and more diagnostics revealed nothing untoward. So ok back to me.
Trying to work with machines in this state is difficult and I thought I'd share the steps I took to try to improve the situation.
Obviously normal Apple Diagnostic tests were not revealing the cause of the behaviour.
I searched for others with similar issues, and looked at the advice. BTW I found Linc Davis to be contributing his usual thoughtful experience to this and would recommend reading his take on this and other issues.
This behaviour reminded me of fixing virus infested machines. To keep the machine alive long enough to add Anti Virus software I set Terminal to start at login. Then I was able to run Top and observe the insane processes in real time. [Activity Monitor was a no go at this point] By killing the stuck processes it gave me enough time to download install Sophos, and work on the iMac. Sophos found some virus infected email attachments and dealt with them.
    Backed up the machine
    Reset the SMC
    Reset the parameter ram
Started up from Mavericks Recovery DIsk and from there used Disk Utility to repair permissions and check the disc.
The machine was running Mavericks 10.9.2 and decided to reinstall Mavericks. You can go back to 10.9. I had previously saved Mountain Lion and Mavericks installs on an external drive. You can install over the net - but a much longer process and not for flaky machines. Amazingly the iMac was stable throughout the Mavericks reinstall and it was successful.
It's early days but the iMac is much better. The designers mostly use Photoshop, Illustrator, Apple Mail and Safari. They work with large images for print and need fast solid machines. Interestingly as a side note, the machine was solid for a few hours and I tried to fire up Photoshop to give it a real test. Photoshop needed to install a java runtime to function? Ok installed java runtime. Opened Photoshop. Worked for a little then Crash. Grey screen of death.
One step forward two steps back. Time to let the designers have a go again. They can make it crash good. Would recommend new MacPro's for them but Adobe hasn't got its act together to take advantage of the power available, so staying with iMacs for now.
