Troubleshooting power supply failures

I'm branching out this thread as a continuation of <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2418851> since the topic has evolved and the subject is no longer accurate.
I have a 2.1GHz iMac G5 (iSight) that does not boot reliably and sometimes goes into deep sleep and can't be awakened. I have ruled out software and RAM issues, leaving power supply and logic board as the likely suspects. I'm leaning towards the power supply. I'd like more info on the symptoms of power supply failures and see if my symptoms are consistent with it.
*Reasons to believe it's the power supply:*
• symptoms are consistent with the computer not getting enough power.
• it's a more common failure.
• Computer has 4+ years of continuous usage.
• the left side of the vent had been warm lately (that fan pushes air over the HD then the PSU)
*Reasons to believe it's the power supply:*
• visual inspection showed no damaged capacitors (although there could be hidden damage)
• in my previous experience with power failures, the Mac shut down completely, not half way.
*Reasons to believe it's the logic board:*
• problem triggered by adding RAM (although that's not the only trigger and removing the RAM didn't • instantly solve the issue. Timing may have been a coincidence)
*Reasons to believe it's not the logic board:*
• It passed all the Apple hardware and Techtool Pro tests.

FYI, you can access them in /private/var/logs, but you need to use a utility to show invisible files first.
The last system.log entry is
May 8 13:19:33 eric kernel[0]: IOPMSlotsMacRISC4::determineSleepSupport has canSleep true
So it looks like it went into sleep normally, but couldn't wake up or shut down without recording any more log entries.
windowserver.log had a few errors 20 minutes earlier:

  • Time Capsule power supply failures

Has the chronic Time Capsule power supply failure after about 18 months use been fixed in the new Time Capsules being sold today?  I had a 500GB Time Capsule I recently had to scrap because of this.

It is always possible there is another fault.. to shut down after a minute.. if you are relating that correctly.. is unusual.. I would power the board from 5v 2A supply.. that will quickly show if the issue is your power supply or not.
The TC is definitely in need of more cooling but I would hate to suggest doing a major modification until it runs out of warranty. It is possible to improve the existing cooling with a bit of smarts.. a laptop (or netbook size) cooler to which you can seal the TC.. this is the tricky bit.. you need to allow a space underneath though.. perhaps 10mm.. and seal just the edge of the TC so it allows the cooler to draw air through the TC. That will work without modifying it. But you will need to make up a proper spacer and gasket.
I see pictures of various fans mounted on the top.. they are next to useless. Cooling the outside plastic will achieve only the tiniest improvement in heat transfer due to the thick plastic (insulating) top.. if it was made out of metal maybe it would do something.
Sounds like what is also needed is a different heat sensor that would start the fan at a lower temperature.
It is not the sensor that is the issue. The TC includes a proper fan controller. It is simply set too high.. and so it doesn't turn on.
If you want to break into the TC.. you can solder in a console.. and use serial to USB adapter.. these are very cheap.. the soldering in is tricky.

This command will turn on the fan.

  • Anyone having Power Supply Failures with 4305's

For some reason over the last 6-8 weeks I am getting multiple power failures on my 4305DMPs, replacing the power supply/wall plug brings everything right back but I'm wondering if there is a bigger problem.
All DMP's are connected to APC power bars with Surge Protection, and the LCD Screen continues to work fine. The DMP will just quickly flicker both Red and Green Lights, and remain unresponsive. We have tried cleaning teh contacts on the power supply but have had no luck.
I have had to swap 10-12 of them now, these have been working with no issues in the field for over 3 years.
I guess I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, a search on here didn't reveal anything.
    Thanks,
    Jh

I haven't heard anything about this on the 4305, but just pointing out that this is a 2-year old post.
We're using some Linksys POE -> 5V splitters and they've been humming away for years. I listen to feedback about reliability, but it would be helpful if a specific part # / manufacturer on the brick were identified along with any complaints about it.
As far as replacements, be sure to use the right specifications, other DMPs operate off of 12VDC but the 4305 uses a 5-volt adapter.
    Input voltage: 5V
    Input current: 3 ADC
Power consumption: Peak: 12W; average: 5W

  • 1st gen. iMac G5 power supply failure

    Hi, all!
My 20" iMac G5 here at work collapsed and died on me about a week ago. The computer just deactivated abruptly; I actually had thought that I had kicked the plug or stepped on the power bar by mistake. I restarted it, and it worked for twenty minutes before dying again. Now it's entirely unresponsive. Having read up on the matter here and in the Mac support pages, I'm quite sure the power supply has failed. I'm in the process of finding out whether the computer is still covered under Apple's Repair Extension Program. (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/ - I know the iMac model is correct, my serial number matches the range, I'm just not sure if the computer is less than three years old.)
Anyway, the important thing for me is the hard drive, not the machine itself. We're entirely Mac-based here at work, so there is no shortage of machines for me to work on (I've already replaced my old machine with a much newer Intel-based iMac), but I would very much like to retrieve my data from my old hard disk. I've downloaded the DIY guide for opening the 20" iMac G5 and removing the hard drive, but I need some advice on the best plan of action. Should I then open another, working G5, remove its hard drive, insert my old hard drive and transfer my files off to my new iMac through our company server? Or is there another way to approach it? Is the hard drive on my 20" first gen G5 compatible with newer mac models, or am I going to run into problems with connectors, physical disk size, etc.? Or, should I just leave well enough alone and leave the entire operation to a Mac Genius?
This will be my first time opening an iMac. I believe that I can open the machines and remove-replace the hard drives without voiding any warranties, correct?
Thanks so much in advance for your help and advice!
    Adam

I am on the phone right now with a product specialist about my iMac G5 power supply issues. Kind of ***** because he has, in so many words, said that the Genius is the Alpha and Omega and can extend the 3 year coverage. For me that is great except that the Apple store is over an hour away. I don't understand why the dude on the phone can't pull the switch and make it happen as well.
    Factor in:
Unplugging iMac G5 and all peripherals
    Loading it in the car
    Driving an hour
Carrying it into the Mall (apple store)
    Waiting for my Genius appointment
More than likely getting it fixed for free (from the sounds of things)
Driving back after it is fixed
    Doing everything listed in reverse.
Would it just be easier to pay the $108 for a new power supply, wait a few days, undo some screws, and BAM! it works again?
Update. Off the phone now. The product specialist flexed his muscles, back handed the Genius to gain authority, and basically stated that they WILL DEFINITELY repair either the power supply or the logic board or both if needed. I have already had them replace the logic board once. BUT, I still have to load it up and take it to the Apple Store. Boo.

  • Mac Pro power supply failure

Anyone have any luck repairing A 2008 Mac Pro power supply? There are two fried resistors on the board and would like to save the 300 USD for a new supply.

    Macitguy.com,
Image was not taken at starting, but to be sure here under are values taken 30 mn after starting with antivirus scanning from the start:

My MacPro is 2006 model 4 cores.
AMHA MacPro cooling system is (almost) like this:
    http://peloche.smugmug.com/photos/93683908_t22JU-L.jpg
If I were you I'll check that nothing slows airflow around DVD location and I'll install Fan control to increase others fan speed (orange and red airflows on the drawing, mines are running at 1500/1600 rpm) this should help the whole system (AMHA), it doesn't cost to make a test.

  • Power Supply failure...

I just had a power surge that killed my powe supply for the for Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GCC.  I tried to live chat for help with Linksys but the rep disconnected me after waiting for about 30 minutes. (Sorry...not relevant info, but just me blowing off steam)
Anyhow, does anyone know if (and where) I can find a replacement for it?  Couldn't find anywhere on the Linksys site where you can order replacement parts.  Does this mean I'm SOL and just need to go an pick up a new router?

Hi guys, I had two of the power supplies fail on the WRT54g's at roughtly the same time. Mine both showed low voltage output (measured at about 1v). So I dutifully took them apart and found two of the capacitors tops were bulging. Apparently this was a common problem due to a bad batch of electrolytic capacitors produced around 2000 - 2002.
So anyway the two capacitors are a 450uf 16v and a 100uf 25v and cost the princely sum of 50p from Maplin or RS components. They are easy to remove and resolder. You'll need a soldering iron, and a multimeter would be a good idea to test the voltages before and after. You'll also need a big flat bladed screwdriver to prise open the case. Hey presto I now have two working wireless routers!!!
Drop me a line if you'd like to know more. You can always just buy another power supply for about £11 but where is the fun in that! Much more satisfying to repair the old one. If you do buy a new one make sure it is 5volts and can handle 2 Amps
    Cheers Andy

  • Satellite A200 - Power supply failure

Since purchasing an A200 last year the laptop has burnt out three Toshiba supplied power adaptors, it has been returned to Toshiba for repair but they insist that the fault was with the adaptors. It has been six weeks since the 'repair' now this one has blown as well. I have contacted Toshiba who to be frank could not have cared less offering only another collection for repair or another power supply (that would probably last a few more weeks).
I have tried to be reasonable with them as it is obvious even to me that the laptop has some fault which they are unable to diagnose but they refuse to replace the unit or in deed take any responsibility what so ever for the problem it has had since just after purchase.
I cannot afford to keep sending it back for repair or waiting for new adaptors to arrive as this is primarily my sons laptop and he is a special needs student tutored at home, he only has 6 hours a week tutoring and as his writing skills are inhibited the laptop is essential if he is to keep up.
    My questions are:
1 Has anyone else experienced this problem
2 Has anyone else had a similar experience with customer service
3 Any opinions on whether I should cut my losses and buy him something more reliable in view of the situation.
    Thanks in advance

    1) I've got a notebook which is 8 years old (non Toshiba one). The AC adaptor died after about 4 month of usage.
I got a new one (for free) and since then it's working like a dream.
    2) I had contacted a ASP sometime ago because my keyboard did work.
They have replaced it very fast.... I was happy with that.
    3) Fact is that the notebook cannot break the AC adaptor. Something like that is not possible (physically).
The AC adaptor can die due to different reasons i.e: bad voltage, high temperature, internal fault, etc...
I think you should simply contact the ASP and should take the new AC adaptor.
    Bye

  • Post Power Supply replacement problems

    Hello,
I'm trying to resuscitate my PowerMac G5 after a power supply failure and I'm having some issues. I've reached the end of my expertise and so I need to reach out to the community in hopes of being pointed in the right direction.
So here's the series of event that led me to where I'm at right now along with some symptoms:
    - My PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 (june 2004) died in a puff of smoke one day, smelled like burnt plastic. I was pretty sure it was a power supply issue. My computer does not qualify for the Apple extended PSU replacement program. After the death, the power supply would click whenever it was plugged in but otherwise the computer was unresponsive.
    - I ordered in a new 600W power supply and replaced the toasted one. I took care to place the CPUs back exactly where they were to avoid having to re-calibrate them.
    - I plugged my computer back in with the same configuration minus the second hard drive. The primary hard drive should be bootable.
    - The first time I powered it on it had no monitor or keyboard/mouse connected. The fans went off at normal speed, the chime chimed and then the fans went full speed.
    - I powered it off and plugged in a keyboard/mouse and monitor and now when I power it on I can hear the fans, then the chime then the CD drive reads a bit of the CD and then that's it. No video.
    - It somehow seems to ignore the keyboard and mouse: I can't use the keyboard to reset the PRAM. I can't use the mouse to open the CD tray.
    - Powering the computer down requires the "press and hold for 2 sec" versus the immediate power down like when the computer is in Target Disk mode.
    - The power status led doesn't flash in anyway at boot, indicating no problem with the RAM, ROM or processors.
    - The diagnosis lights inside the mac are not lit until I remove the plastic cover which triggers the default behavior of running the fans at full speed. Then the led lights up.
    - I reset the PMU but it didn't seem to make a difference.
    - I tried accessing the disk in Target Disk mode but since the keyboard appears to be ignored I don't think the G5 even gets in Target Disk mode. In any case it doesn't mount on the remote computer.
    - I notice that the fan on the video card doesn't spin. The video card is an ATI 800XT with a Zallman fan and heatsync installed.
I'd be tempted to say that the video card got fried with the PSU failure but then shouldn't I be able to use the keyboard to reset the PRAM and such ? The fact that I'm unable to do that leads me to believe that perhaps a part of the logic board or the front panel got fried...
How would I go about troubleshooting this without buying a new logic board and front panel ?
    Any ideas ?

Going through the exact same issue started about 1.5 weeks ago thinking about giving up and buying a Mac mini for access and snow leopard.

  • G5 Dual 2.5 Power Supply Replacement?

Hi, I tried searching for this, but there seems to be no information available for my particular model. Last week, I had the dreaded power supply failure for an out of warranty, June 2004 G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz. I brought in to a repair shop, and they ordered a new power supply for it. But I was told today that the they can't seem to locate any detailed documentation on this particular computer. My own searches have turned up the same (although plenty of documentation on other, different G5's).
As it stands, no one can seem to figure out how to access the power supply, which seems to be placed between the "floor" of the interior, and the actual bottom of the case. Does anyone know where to find the right instructions/documentation, or know themselves how to pull this sucker apart? I'd be eternally grateful for any help.

Hi. Reference material and anything detailed on the G5 is a bit scarce. The G5 Service Source is here.
The manual does not show liquid cooling. Some more info here - but again, not liquid-cooled
    http://www.sharpeningbeneath.com/g5guide/
    Some photos here
    http://homepage.mac.com/thunderaudio/PhotoAlbum1.html
As you can see it's quite an undertaking - the risk of damaging something much more expensive than the PSU is high. Which is why, I guess, people let the shop have the problem of fixing anything they break...

  • Odd power supply fault callhome emails on Cisco 2232 FEXs?

We recently enabled smtp callhome for our ucs pod a few days ago. Since then, we've received more than a dozen email bursts about power supply failures in each of the four Cisco Nexus 2232TP FEXs in our pod. In each case, we get a "Recovered" email within a minute or two, and we're not seeing power supply failure emails for any other devices within the UCS pod.

If we were seeing this from just one fex, I'd suspect a hardware issue. If any of the other UCS devices (rackmount/blade servers, fabric interconnects, etc) reported similar issues, I'd suspect a power feed problem within the DC.
But this has me baffled. If it helps, the UCS pod is running firmware 2.0.3c

    Thanks Paul,
It is known ( cosmetic ) issue with power supply model.

The above is resolved in recent version of Nexus 5K switch software. New defect to port the fix to UCSM has been submitted today

It will take a while to get published on web site.
Even though they are cosmetic, I would suggest you open a TAC SR with UCSM, FEX tech support and above bug IDs so that we can track the resolution.

  • Power supply conundrum

I've been reading various posts from people with the same problem that I'm having. There seems to be a lot of you out there. My iMac G5 has a bad power supply too. I looked into the repair extension program that apple offered to remedy this problem and my serial number makes mine eligible but, alas, my power supply failure occurred 9 months too late. I don't think it's fair that they exclude older machines since there is an inherent design flaw with this component. The age of the machine should make no difference. Is there any recourse?

After reading more posts on this subject, I'm replying to my own post with another question??????????
I'm capable of replacing the power supply myself. When my computer was only several months old I transplanted the midplane of this same computer into an new bezel and display after a display failure. Piece of cake. It was a DIY procedure. Apparently the power supply replacement is not DIY for some reason and they suggest taking it to an authorized repair center. How can I buy one if they're not willing to sell it to me?

  • Cisco 3850 Dual Power Supply - One No Response

    Hey Guys,
I am getting multiple switches on my network showing "power supply failure" from Solarwinds.
I am running Cisco 3850s running v 03.02.03.SE cat3k_caa-universalk9 iOS, and they all have dual power supplies. When i do the sh env power, I get this output.
    SWITCH1#sh env power
SW  PID                             Serial#     Status               Sys Pwr  PoE Pwr  Watts
    1A  PWR-C1-715WAC       xxxx           OK                 Good     Good           715
1B  PWR-C1-715WAC       xxxx         No Response   Good     Good           715
    SWITCH2#sh env power
SW  PID                              Serial#     Status           Sys Pwr    PoE Pwr     Watts
    1A  PWR-C1-715WAC       xxxx           OK                   Good     Good          715
1B  PWR-C1-715WAC       xxxx         No Response     Good     Good          715
When I physically go down to look at the switches, they have green lights, so they are receiving power, but I keep getting the PSU failure alerts.
Do you think it is an iOS issue, and should I upgrade? Or has anyone else seen this?

    Hi,
I think below Bug could match with your issue.
"power supply B is not responding" reoccurring on Catalyst switches
    https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCun41735/?reffering_site=dumpcr
And we can see workaround of this issue is HW workaround.

Could it be that if the power supply is off to begin with when it does it's discovery, it doesn't register an alarm?

  • Main power supply

Main Power Supply Failure - My Imac was about 18 months old when the main power supply "Blew up" to quote the repair technician - it even disturbed other items on the board. The machine was protected by a surge board and nobody else in my village suffered problems with their machines (Macs or PCs). Have I just been unlucky or is this a problem that occurs with some machines?

I'd say unlucky. Was there an outage?
