True you can't clean install Intel iMacs?

Hi,
When I get a new Mac I generally zero out the drive and reinstall the OS and apps from the provided install discs and run a clean system without all the extra languages, etc.
Somewhere on this forum I thought I read that the new Intel iMacs cannot be restored from the install discs after zeroing the HD.
Is this correct? If so, why not?

It doesn't matter if you clean install it or not as
far as bluetooth goes. When you first boot the
computer after a clean install, it will do a search
for a bluetooth mouse or keyboard by default.
glor
I learned something very disturbing earlier today from Applecare Tech Support. I tried to boot from my install DVD (holding "c" down as instructed) but it hung. Tried three times with same result. When I called Applecare, they said you MUST HAVE A WIRED KEYBOARD AND MOUSE to boot from the install DVD because Bluetooth doesn't activate early enough for the wireless input devices to be seen in order to complete the various commands.
Their advice - go buy a USB keyboard and mouse so when I have to boot from the install DVD, I can!
This after I ordered my iMac online and PAID EXTRA for the wireless and, on top of that, was not sent a USB set along with the wireless. I feel a little ripped off...

  • HT1338 how do you perform a clean install for imac

How to perform a clean install for imac, because I cannot upgrade to version 10.6?

Here are the technical requirements for Snow Leopard:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575
If your iMac meets the requirements, then you will have to purchase the Snow Leopard disk from apple:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
To reinstall your OS, insert the original OS disk that came with your iMac and start up the iMac holding the C key.  Start the installation process and when you see the menu bar, select 'Utilities'. From the drop down menu, select Disk Utility.  Erase the HDD and the continue the installation.
Note that this will erase all data on the HDD so have it backed up before you start.

  • Can you do a "clean install" after an auto update install of 10.10?

Can you do a "clean install" after an auto update install of 10.10?
    If yes, how?

I suppose it depends on what you define as a “clean install."
You can erase the startup drive and install Yosemite in Recovery.
Boot into Recovery (cmd-r on startup).
From there, use Disk Utility to Erase the startup volume (Macintosh HD).
Quit Disk Utility, then Install OS X.
You should obviously have a backup prior to attempting this.

  • How do you do a  Clean install lion

How do you do a clean install of lion? My iMac is 8 yr old and has gotten sluggish. At one point it was suggested that I might want to do a clean install but no one ever told me how to do that since we don't have a disk!

Assuming you already have Lion installed, boot into Recovery Mode (Command-R). From there you can reinstall Lion. Note, however, that a clean install means you first erase the drive you want to do the clean install on, and unless you have a complete backup of everything that's currently on it, you'll lose it all; the clean install will leave you with a fresh operating system but nothing else. To get it all back, make that external clone, then when the clean install is finished on the internal, Setup Assitant will run and you can point it at the external clone to get all your stuff back.

You can not not install ISE CUE software on UC500, but only UC500 specific CUE software.
And, (I don't know if that is the case), if the language you need is supported on CUE for ISR but not on UC500 CUE, there is no solution, and you can only complain to Cisco for not having delivered the languages they had publicily promised to the public.
Furthemore to that, it apperas there is a bug in 8.6.3 that makes so mailbox caller guide is played with default system language instead of user setting langiage.

  • New HD and can't clean install with SL upgrade disc

    I am really stuck here...
My '07 white MacBook HD died last week. It originally came with Tiger, I bought Leopard when it came out, and also bought the Snow Leopard upgrade disc.
When I got the MacBook back today, I thought I'd try a clean install of SL - but it wouldn't install, telling me I needed 10.5 or later in order to install SL. So I then tried installing Leopard, but the disc verification failed multiple times (it only has minor scratches on it!).
I then tried the Leopard install disc that came with my '09 MacBook Pro - but of course it must check the hardware, as it said it could not be installed on the MacBook.
So I then installed Tiger from the original MacBook discs, thinking I could upgrade Tiger to SL (had seen mention of this) - but again, I got the message stating I needed 10.5 or later.
I've seen a YouTube video of someone doing a clean install of SL - but the person had a new Unibody Macbook - and I think the SL must do a hardware check and if it's an older MacBook that wouldn't have originally come with Leopard installed, it doesn't let you do a clean install of SL.
Very frustrating I can't get SL installed on a new HD, even though I do own Leopard!

    hi
actually you should be able to install SL over a Tiger install. i posted here recently with my (positive) experiences and here's an excerpt:
+1. Used the install disks that came with my MBP to put a fresh Tiger on an external FW drive. Updated install to 10.4.11 and installed SL over that. Started to install 3rd party SW one by one – NO ISSUES+
+2. Did a fresh install of SL on an external FW drive and migrated settings, programs, etc. from my MBP – NO ISSUES+
+3. Then I took the plunge and just “upgraded” my 10.5.8 on the internal drive using the SL install disk – NO ISSUES+
+I want to point out that during all 3 installs above I had 2 external FW disks and 1 external FW optical drive (used that for the SL disk) connected to my MBP !+
+Obviously, I took the “usual” precautions (make a bootable clone plus regular TM backup) before I upgraded my internal drive.+
maybe i am lucky that i have 2 external FW drives to juggle with. but if you have one (or get one) this ought to work.

  • OS X and Windows on MacBook Pro. Can I clean install only the OS X?

I have both OS X and Windows on my MacBook Pro. The OS X has been ridiculously slow and freezes up most of the time, especially when I use Office. The Windows partition has been working perfectly. Can I clean install just the OS X part of my computer? How would I go about doing that? I want to leave the Windows partition alone.
    Thanks!!

    Hopefully this will work:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.

  • Customizing icons in Dock: is it true you can't?

Is it really true you can no longer create custom icons for the Dock?
(yes, I get that you can arrange the top icon in that folder in such a way that it shows up as the folder's icon...sort of.)
The Dock's loss of productivity is such that for the first time ever, I'm telling colleagues to not upgrade to Leopard.

I found a solution for this, sort of... The icon in the Dock is only the plain folder, if the folder is empty. Once you put any items in it, the icon of the folder changes to a "stack of icons" with the most visible top item being the first item in the sort order. If the sort order is alpha-numerical, then the top-of-the-stack item is the one the starts with the lowest number. Honestly, I don't know what the interface design folks at Apple were thinking, but here's a way make it look then way you want.
If you want the Dock icon of that special folder (or "stack" as it's called now) to look like the icon you want, here's what I did. (1) Do a Get Info on the special icon folder in Finder. (2) Select the icon in the Get Info window and Copy it. (3) Open that special folder and create a New Folder inside. (4) Do a Get Info on that new folder, click on the icon, and Paste the special icon image so that it looks like the parent folder. (5) Change the new folder's name so the it is first alpha-numerically; I just used "00" (that's two zeros) as the name. (6) Go back up one level to see the parent folder in a Finder window, and drag it to the Dock.
Since the first item in the stack is now the folder with the desired icon, it will appear in the Dock. If fact, the other items will appear to be stacked behind it, which actually looks appropriate. Ultimately, I hope Apple provides an Dock preference option to show the icon of the folder instead showing the stack.

  • Clean install my imac intel based machine

    Hi folks,
I'm needing to replace the hard drive and clean install my intel based imac 17" (early 2006) machine and have only the osx 10.4 disk. Do i need another disk to begin this? I am rather new to this machine (I guess you could say newbie)
Anyone know if there is a step-by-step to replace this hard drive and then install the os. From what I've read there is supposed to be an install disk besides the osx disk?
    Any help is appreciated.

Just for your reference, if you lost those original disks, I recommend calling AppleCare to ask for replacements:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
To be sure you are identifying your Mac correctly, follow this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
Intel Macs as the others have said will not boot from the black retail Tiger install disks that look like this box , and will only boot from the gray disks which came with them.
Older Macs will boot from newer retail discs (to the spec limit of the operating system, for Tiger that means built-in Firewire and DVD drive*) than came with them. To find out which one came with which Mac, see this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
Also there is no such thing as a Tiger clean install, as my user tip explains. Replacing your hard disk, effectively is like an erase and install:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Before doing this, I strongly recommend isolating the issues on your Mac. Erasing, or replacing the hard drive is rarely needed, except when it the hard drive is truly dead. If you need help isolating issues with your hard drive, we'd be happy to show you how.
    * DVD drive requirement can be overcome if you get the Tiger Media Exchange on Apple's Tiger upgrade website.

  • Oct 2014: from Snow Leopard, can you do a clean install using download of OSX10.8?

    Hi there,
I'd like to do a clean install from Snow Leopard using the OSX10.8 download from Apple's website. It states there that i must have Snow Leopard already installed to do this, so does that mean it's impossible to do?
I'd appreciate any help on this please.
    Thanks for your time,
    Richard
MacBook Pro 15", mid 2010 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, 8gb ram, 500gb HD, Intel Core i7

Hi QuickTimeKirk, thanks very much for your prompt reply.
The fact that it's only sold via the App Store with a redemption code - does that mean it's not a full version of Mountain Lion in its own right? It's just an upgrade?
The reason for the 'clean install' is really because part of this whole process is the need to update certain legacy software, and also the machine is starting to show a few unusual behaviours. Nothing too earth shattering, just enough to cause me a bit of grief. So with everything considered i just thought, 'right, time to overhaul the whole system' - what better time to start - repair the HD (if necessary), go through the usual back-up routines and wipe the disk. Hence the decision for a completely clean install.
So, if you happen to know if the Mountain Lion download is a full version that would be great.
Thanks for your help Kirk, it's appreciated, and hope to hear from you soon. Best wishes, Richard

  • Can I clean-install MBP 17" C2D 2,1 (currently using OS X 10.5.8) with OS X 10.7.4?

  • Clean Install on iMac G4

Okay, so the title implies a simple procedure, but there are a few technical hitches that are confusing me.
First thing to note is that I am a novice Mac user. I know my way around for the most part and love using Mac's, but don't really have the knowledge to know exactly what to do in this situation.
I have just acquired an iMac G4 1GHz from my Dad as he has upgraded. I am currently using a Windows machine, but trying to configure the Mac for my use as it is going with me when I go off to uni in september. There are a few problems with it and I personally see a clean install as the best option.
The iMac was bought by my Dad from ebay. The seller had bought a new iMac and no longer needed this one. It had a load of expensive software on it and we just used the machine as it was - no clean install. It works fine. Apart from GarageBand, which refuses to open. Glitch Number 1.
I have recently purchased a Logitech MX Revolution mouse for my PC, and the Logitech website assures me that it works with Macintosh. I plug the wireless receiver into a USB port on the iMac and all looks fine. Until I try to click something. The pointer moves, but you can't select anything. None of the buttons work. Glitch Number 2. I have tried downloading the new Control Centre to install, every time I try to run it it says "please connect the wireless USB receiver and try again", even though it's already connected.
So, I figured, a clean install sounds good right? I find the install disc and pop it in the drive. Click to restart the mac, starts booting up from the disc...good. No, wait, it's hanging.....it's died. Not doing anything. Got the grey screen with spinning loader wheel, just stopped, and a message telling me to restart in several different languages. WHAT?! Glitch Number 3.
I've tried various other install discs we seem to have around the house and they don't work because they aren't for this system. But the disc I have IS for the system. But it's not working. WHY?!?!?!
Would really appreciate your help! Thanks! =)

    Hi tomrock182!
    Let's start with the basics.
Exactly which model iMac G4 is it?
Is it one of these iMac (USB 2.0) - Technical Specifications
    iMac (17-inch 1Ghz) - Technical Specifications?
Which version of OS X is currently installed?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
"I find the install disc and pop it in the drive."
And "But the disc I have IS for the system."
Exactly which install disc are you using? Is it the original system disc that shipped with the iMac, or a Full Retail Version of Jaguar, Panther or Tiger?
Once you have inserted the install disc, are you restarting while pressing the C key?

  • What happens when you do a clean install

Hi i'm looking to upgrade my macbook, currently running on OS X Tiger, to Lion. I understand that i will have to do this either via a thumb drive, or through snow leopard then Lion. I am just wondering how will be best to go about upgrading. I would like to do clean install but not sure how to do it and exactly what the benifit is for doing so. Also i'm looking to do it on the cheap by buying the snow leopard disc on ebay, is there anything i should be looking out for from buying secondhand?
    Cheers P

The benefit of a clean install is a better and more reliable system. I highly recommend it. The basic process is:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your Lion installer. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Quit DU after formatting has completed and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall OS X Lion and click on the Install button. Select the drive you just erased as the destination.

  • SSD Cache Not Working U840 after Clean Install Intel Smart Response Technology

Hello, I completed a clean install of Windows 8 on my ultrabook model U840 (Core i3, 16GB SSD).  I would appreciate any advice to get the SSD to use the Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) for SSD Cache.
I used the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver during install and after installing Windows 8 but I do not recieve the option to Accelerate the SSD drive.  I followed the instructions and links contained in this Toshiba Forum post: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=277914
The computer is supported for Windows 8 upgrade and clean install drivers are available at Toshiba: http://support.toshiba-tie.co.jp/windows8/drivers_cae.htm
The BIOS is set to default for the drives (Performance). Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks.

I used a somewhat abbreviated version of this guide myslef, and did have some trial and errors

I urge you to at least read my post in the other Toshiba forum for a fuller grasp and overview, but I have also attached the two Intel website and PDF links for you.
Keep in mind that there are seemingly two types or Intel Rapid Cache type options. Follow the instructions in the intel link and one of them will work for you. (I hope it does work for you because i know how frustrating this issue is)

  • Can I clean install a Windows 7 Pro System Builder on a Lenovo PC with Windows 8 preinstalled?

Hi. I would like to clean install windows 7 on a Lenovo PC  that came with Windows 8 core preinstalled. I want to format the entire drive and remove windows 8 and clean install windows 7.  I already tried the clean install of Windows 7 Pro to get all of my drivers in line, and now I would like to buy a Product Key.
Would  a Windows 7 Pro System Builder work in my case? Would it work just as smoothly as a retail version? I understand that the System Builder is an OEM version that includes the Product Key, COA, and DVD) Just want to make sure before I buy the System Builder version of Windows 7 Pro.  Thanks.

that should be retail since it seemed to be used for pc upgrades either way your new system builder key should work. those are called refresh because they re-released them sincea bug was found in thier installers. Do you have any key in the computer atm? or is windows just waiting to be activated?
EDIT: its a good copy look here>  http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/14-windows-7-direct-download-links
Should you want to use the DVD images permanently, and don't own a product key yet, you can order a Windows 7 OEM or retail version from Amazon. The OEM reinstallation versions contain a DVD with a product key just like the retail versions. They are significantly cheaper, but lack a proper box packaging, and don't include technical support by Microsoft. The OEM key will work with the Digital River downloads, so you can just pick the cheapest one. Sometimes better editions are the cheaper ones, so all of the following links to Amazon offers might be worth checking. I've already tried to find good deals for all editions and linked to them here:
