Trying coreboot...vga bios issue

hi. I'm giving coreboot a try, but i've found a couple of problems.
Now, the documentation says if i dont have an external VGA adapter (PCI, AGP, PCIe), i need to add the VGA BIOS.
this is the page with the procedures: http://www.coreboot.org/VGA_support
My MoBo is the Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H (Award BIOS), which has an on-board VGA. So i guess that means i have to add the bios.
first theres is the option of specify directly the path, filename, vendor_id and device_id. but i dont have the faintest idea about what path and filename are.
The first method to get it is a program called bios_extract, which i've compiled and run (according to the doc, ./bios_extract hdmag217.rom), without any success, it does not find the file hdmag217.rom
I tried too a former software called awardeco, but it says it doesnt find via.rom
Another method is a direct copy of the bios via dd. So i guess bios ROM it's supposed to be mapped into RAM.
In order to know the sizer of the rom i need to check /proc/iomem and look for ROM. Well it doesnt appear ROM anywhere.
The VGA on-board is an ATI HD4200. Is it possible it is taken as a pci card although is built on the mobo?
I dont wanna flash the bios without having everything clear, so i wanted to make sure first.
cheers.

You need to do this after restoring your BIOS:
# cat /proc/iomem | grep 'Video ROM' | (read m; m=${m/ :*}; s=${m/-*}; e=${m/*-}; \
dd if=/dev/mem of=vgabios.bin bs=1c skip=$[0x$s] count=$[$[0x$e]-$[0x$s]+1])
(That is one line, copy and paste the whole thing). Credit: coreboot wiki

  • P35 VGA/BIOS issues (with new GTX275 gfx)

I have a P35 (7345 FIR) mobo running an E8400 and 4gb 800 MHz RAM all at stock with a 750W continuous (Strider) PSU & Vista 64 home premium.  All work fine with my original 9600 GT gfx card.
Then I tried to install a Palit GTX275 card - worked fine in 2D but anything demanding '3D' graphics (any game or video stability test) caused immediate black screen death & re-boot.  Multiple attempts to use Palit & Nvidia drivers failed to sort this - even resorted to clearing CMOS but no joy.  Card tested elsewhere works OK - so I'm now going to try updating the BIOS (currently V1.10) - and having had no luck with liveupdate 3 will be attempting to USB flash it this weekend.
Anyone got any bright ideas or know of any issues that might explain this?
    cheers

Update time! - Svet was right - it is the Strider PSU causing the problem.  I bodged an old 300W PSU with adaptors and everything worked - so why the Strider is tripping out, I have no idea - still can't find any guidance on what to do with the pair of pots. which supposedly control protection sensitivity - further twiddling did not help.
Get rid of that 300W PSU as well [don't use it as solution], go for decent one as Henry suggested.

  • K8MM-V 7142 updated vga bios

i have a couple of system using k8mm-v board which has VIA/S3 UnichromePro IGP, recently we have upgraded most monitor to 17"/19" Wide screeen LCD, here the problem come, the onboard vga bios does not support those wxga resolution like 1440x900 or 1650x1024, google around found this is related to vga bios issue, not driver. i have updated those system to ver 1A bios, vga bios seems remain the unchanged. is there any service/beta bios available to fix this problem? tq.

these are only low end sempron powered (tats the whole point for all-in-one board) office station which only do basic office documents/spreadsheets work & internet browsing, nothing more nothing less. pretty no point buying new display card for this. even a 5 years old 845g onboard display driving the wide screen lcd without any problem (their vga bios updated with driver though).

  • VGA Bios questions...

My VGA card is MSI FX5600-TD256.
    Here are my questions:
1)Which is the latest Bios version for my card? My current version is 4.31.20.39.00. Is there a newer one? Searching through the web I found another version including this text in the read me file:
    Quote
    MSI GeForce FX BIOS
Name     : GeForce FX 5600 BIOS
    Version  : 4.31.20.69.00    Ultra : No
2)Is it worth updating the bios? (I have restart problems probably caused by graphics card...)
3)Which is the proccess I have to follow to update it? (Just copy the .rom file in a disk and boot from that disk??)
4)Why in MSI site there are no VGA Bios files?
5)How do I back up my current VGA bios version?
    Thanks in advance...

If MSI live Update finds no BIOS upgrade then there is no BIOS upgrade available. Even if there is one available, I don't recommend updating VGA BIOS unless there is a known documented issue relating to your problem. As far as I know there is no issue currently. I have not come across this issue in these forums either.
I don't have any answers to your restart problem since you did not provide any details of this restart problem. I cannot guarantee I would even if you did, but do so anyway.
I never update VGA BIOS's so I can't help you on backing up your current VGA BIOS. Someone else will have to step in for that.
The MSI site doesn't archive VGA BIOS files for the public. MSI only updates the original VGA BIOS from nVidia in circumstances such as when they decide to use a different RAM package than specified from nVidia spec. Oftentimes I see users reporting that MSI Live Update hosed their VGA BIOS after an update and in a few circumstances I have been able to request the original BIOS file.
Again, it's not worth updating the VGA BIOS as they get it right the first time and they hardly ever deviate from the original nVidia BIOS unless a certain RAM package is used for say an OEM version of the card or a performance version where they may use a faster package etc.
I recommend looking elsewhere for your restart problem.

  • List of VGA bios'

Im looking for a list of downloadable vga bios' (particularly for my 8850).  the live update cant get a list of available bios' from the server.  ive searched the site and i cant find it.  i found a reference to this in an earlier post, but i want to see a list of all available bios'

Thoroughly, and testing worked only on the listed values. I tried vbetest -m 357 with no success. And I remembered to add 512 before typing the value in the command line.
I consider it strange, because, fbset makes it just work, but a bit late, and in effect during the bootup the screen first changes resolution to 1024x768, then, after running fbset, to 1440x900

  • Downloadable VGA Bios?

I cannot use LiveUpdate to update the bios of my graphics card as I don't have internet access at my home.
Is there any downloadable version of VGA Bios for MSI graphics card?
    I'm using Geforce4 MX440 SE ( MS-8878 )
    TQ!

Actually I have problem turning on SBA and Fastwrite. I'm using K7T Turbo2(MS-6330 Ver5.0) motherboard.
When I run some benchmarking program (eg. 3D Mark 2001), the status of sideband addressing (SBA) and fastwrite (FW) of both the card and motherboard are shown as follow:
    Graphics Card:
    SBA: not supported
    FW: supported but not enabled
    Motherboard:
    SBA: supported but not enabled
    FW: not supported
I tried very hard to force the SBA features using variety of software (Rivatuner, PowerStrip), but all failed.
Is it possible to force on either (or both) features? I heard that there are ways to force the features in low-level.
    Helps & Advices pls!
    TQ!

  • Downgrade vga bios

    Hi ,
I have a NX6600GT VTD128 and I have updated  ( big mistake ) the vga bios to the latest version using Live update.
The current bios is 5.43.02.64.00 but I don't have the previous one.
The thing is that i lost the temp readings from the display manager .
Is there any way I can retrieve the previous bios version?
I did the upgrade because I had some artifacts when using 3d models in Autocad and when playing games ( Freelancer ) and I still
having them even after formatting the HDD.
After formatting I use first the MSI drivers , I unistall them and use the latest NV drivers (Fware 93.71 )
    Still the same.
    thanks

Coolbits is simply a small file that adds registry entries so that hidden capabilities in the nVidia settings panel become available.  You can get Coolbits from Guru3D, http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815 .   RivaTuner has even more capabilities, http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner&menu=8
    Quote from: Guru3D
    Software Description
Coolbits 2 unleashes hidden function within ForceWare drivers, it enables several new Direct3d and OpenGL configuration tabs, and even more tweaking capability from the nVidia taskbar settings panel.
    FAQ:
    Q. I dont see the temperature settings, is this due to my card?
    A. The temp settings panel is only available with cards equipped with thermal sensors. Some cards that I know of have temp sensors are 5700 Ultra, 5800 Ultra, 5900 non-Ultra and Ultra, and 5950 ultra. But really it all comes down to the manufacturer. I have seen some 5700 and 5900 without temp sensor, but mainly the cheaper XT/LX/SE versions.
    Q. The Fan always on doesn`t seem to work
    A. The 'fan always on' option is for cards with the OTES (i.e. 5800U) or similar cooling system in which shuts off in 2d mode. It will force fan on even in 2D mode. Of course this means the fans on the hs/f be designed such a way that this option can work.
    Q. I thought it enabled Opengl 2.0. It doesn't though.
    A. OpenGL Shading Language 2.0 can only be enabled on 55.xx and higher Forceware drivers. It had not yet been implemented in older Detonator or pre 55 Forceware drivers.
    Q. Where is the application profiles page?
    A. It has been disabled to allow for OpenGL and Direct3d tabs. You can re-enable the application profiles page by changing its respective value to 1 in the coolbits file.
If you experience any minor problems, simply uninstall/reinstall your display driver. I would recommend using Driver Cleaner as well, especially when switching driver versions.
Unpack the achive (self extracting) and then in the setup directory simply click on the .reg file. To get to these options simply right-click on your desktop and go to 'NVIDIA Analog Display' (Win XP/2003). For Win 2000 and lower you may need to get to the Nvidia Control Panel the old way. Right click desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce xxxx
*NOTE: Coolbits 2 is not fully compatible with driver versions older than 55.xx. If you do happen to run this tweak with drivers older than 55.xx you will more than likely get errors at startup! To enable full compatibility, you must disable the options that are causing issues with your current setup.

  • What's with updating VGA bios? Is this necessary if your hardware is fine?

How much improvement does it do really? Does it make the images look better? Does the fps improve fignificantly, if at all? Does it make the card cooler? Some treat it like a wonder cure. Is it?

VGA BIOS update is only issued to address a particular issue, you should only update it if absolutely necessary!!
Updating your VGA BIOS won't make your card faster, run cooler, or make images look better. But if it goes wrong, it will make your card dead!

  • ThinkPad Twist S230U BIOS issue...

The problem is that when the computer turns on, it makes a loud series of 5 beeps, followed by a pause, and then 5 more loud beeps. Additionally, the auto-rotate feature is horrible and doesn't seem to work. Everything else works fine. However, I read in your community that I should update the BIOS to resolve both the beeping issue as well as the auto-rotate issue. I tried updating the BIOS using the Windows 8.1 Utility to do so, however it fails at the READ step. On your community, someone said that there is a Security setting that can be disabled in BIOS to get rid of the beeps. However, I'm also finding that if I try to load the BIOS settings (Press Enter at the Lenovo screen, press F1), the screen simply displays black and nothing ever comes up, therefore I can't get to BIOS settings to do anything.
I should mention that I'm not using an external display in this scenario, as I realize that sometimes external displays are not able to display the BIOS due to low resolution.
Summary: Loud Beeps & Terrible Auto-Rotate, Can't Update BIOS, Can't get into BIOS to change settings, everything else is working okay.
    Ideas?
    OS: Windows 8.1

    Hello,
I would suggest giving Lenovo support a call directly and working with one of their support engineers to troubelshoot.

    Sorry for my English.
I haven't any problem whit this card. And I don't need upgrade the bios.

The difference between this and other Ti4200-8x is it has dual VGA output compare to others' VGA + DVI.
    Have you tried Live-Update?
May I know why do you need the VGA BIOS? Is the card flawed? Is the RAM on the card running slower? Is there any artifacts? If you don't have this problem, you don't need to update any VGA BIOS.

  • G475 BIOS Issue

I have a G475 with Windowx 7 Home Basic installed.
Every time I turn on or restard the system, it automatically enters Boot Manager.
Regardless of the option I choose (HDD, DVD, Network,) it imediately starts that error sound (or as if a key is being pressed) up until Windos loads up.
I'm not able to enter BIOS settings, just Boot Manager.
I've already tried to update BIOS, but the app says it's already up-to-date. Also, I ran a fresh install of Windows, but the problem remains.
    Would someone help me?
    Thanks

    Hi lumbrigack,
Thanks for posting back. i did some check on your issue and to be honest I'm not sure what your machine is acting the way it is. Looking at this further I wishhave other solutions that explains the situation that you're but I left with the only option to get to contact our service team to take a look at the machine harware. From what I gather this seems to look more like a Hardware issue rather than software.
Sorry I couldn't of further help but it appears that this is the only option left. below is a link for our authorized service partners . Do give them a call and they'll be able to assist you according.

  • M30 BIOS Issues...

Hi guys i have an M30 like everyone else!
I have tried updating the Bios (i originally had v1.4) so i had to downgrade to v1.2 in order to upgrade to v1.6 (as instructed by Toshiba download pages), here comes the tricky part... everything went smooth in downgrading (through the software version not the boot disk one) but when i try upgrading i get the error "you are not an authorized user"... the question to ask is... how the f@# can i downgrade but i cannot upgrade?!?!?!
This really pisses me off ... i have tried various tricks (since i don't have a floppy drive, and i don't wanna buy one just because of this...) like map network, removable device boot, cd-rom boot but still nothing works since i am trying to upgrade with the second program (the boot disk one).
Any ideas would be much appreciated

    Hi Guy,
why did you downgrade to version 1.2 ?????
To Upgrade the M30 Series, version 1.2 or higher has to be installed!
    I dont understand your issue....
Does your M30 do not boot any more? Have you tried to update the BIOS with the traditional version?
You dont need a Floppy drive, because, you can also burn a BIOS Update CD.
Please give me more input, that I can help you....

  • Where is msi vga bios update for GF4 Ti cards?

It seems like many other card vendors are updating the bios on their GF4 cards for better performance. My friend got a nice performance boost on his winfast from a bios update. Everytime I search on MSI Live Update (I have to update Live Update...whats up with so many versions of a simple download utility) it says there are no vga bios updates for my GF4/4400. I read on these forums that .25 (I think) was a disaster and trashed everybodys cards. Is there news on an improved update?

Msi are going to be last, and then if they release new bios for G4Ti cards.
Don´t you now they suck, I would sell my card right now if I could.
I'm using Asus DVCR for TV because Wincoder with my version did not support full screen window.
I got fantastic stupid tips from MSI support, because my MSI-CLOCK and 3D!Turbo don't work.  And it still not work with XP.
If I had 1$ for hour that i had spent to this card trying to let work right.  I could get better card from other vendor.  I will never get anything with MSI stamp.  I'ts better to spent more money and save time for better thinks.

  • U160 netbook BIOS issue

    Hi,
Today when I turned on my U160 the BIOS was stopped at the boot screen with the MSI logo. I tried disconnecting the power cord and the battery as well but unfortunately nothing helped. Every time turned on it stopped at the MSI logo and not reacting on any buttons. Sometimes holding the power button for more than 5 seconds did not turn off the power either, so I had to remove the battery in order to turn off the computer.
No I haven't tried to do BIOS flashing prior that, but after that I was just wondering if now I could do at least a BIOS upgrade would be really good. Unfortunately it was not possible to boot any OS, so I had no chance to do any BIOS operations except for the HW intrusion.
So I decided to try to fix it in the hard way. The warranty period was over, so I brought my U160 to the electronics HW lab at my workplace and disassembled it completely. I managed to find the BIOS flash chip so I removed it using a hot-air soldering station. We have a flash programmer called DediProg here, so I hooked up the chip in a socket and flashed with the latest BIOS image release (N051EMS1.423 1.0D 2011-05-13).
After that I soldered the chip back to its place and voila - the U160 booted correctly again.
Right know everything looks good, but I have some concerns about that...
    - it looks like the BIOS can kill itself after several boot-ups (I have no idea how.)
    - in order to repair, you have to have soldering skills
    - a flash programmer equipment is also needed for this operation
As a conclusion I think this is a very serious problem and I hope it has been fixed in this new BIOS release.
If there are any technical people who are interested in the old image I saved before flashing, I can send it over.
    ///Alpy

    I don't really agree.
    1) I haven't tried any BIOS updates, I was satisfied with the old one.
    2) During the boot process the BIOS writes to the flash certainly. If you disconnect power at the right time you can corrupt the BIOS image. I spent several years working together BIOS developers and we came across this problem at every new Intel CPU generation. (I'm a hardware designer and we are building server motherboards based on Intel chipsets.)
However the chip can get corrupted for many other reasons, but since the manufacturer of the flash (Winbond) guaranties 10 years data retention, I would not really suspect such issues. Anyway if I will have the same problem again within 1 year I will replace the chip. (Fortunately, we have several new parts here in the lab.)

  • HP dv6 Bios issue

    Hi I have a Hewlett Packard dv6 1204AX
I have it running windows 32 bit.
4GB Ram. Everything else is standard with no overclocking ever.
My problem began today when my mate bought over a black screened laptop.
We began by noticing that his would not turn on. we concluded that it might be the hard drive.
To test this we took the harddrive out of mine and put it in his. We also tried the RAM, removing that from the dv6 but it would not fit. We did not force anything.
We then tried his hard drive in my laptop to see if his harddrive would work...it did not.
I then put my laptop back together, replacing the RAM and the hard drive but when I started it, my laptop was now black screening with the lights blinking twice, pointing at a BIOS issue.
I tried the hard reset with no luck.
I pulled out the hard drive and ram, blew to make sure no dust was on it, and put it back in. Still no luck.
I tried the windows + B fix. Still no good.
I removed CMOS battery for 40 minutes. replaced. Still no go.
I loaded BIOS software from the HP site onto a usb stick but it wouldn't load the stick. DID change the name of the file to a .bin file as told.
I have tried multiple hard resets etc.
I then asked a friend who fixes computers who told me to go and get a new CMOS battery...I did that...put it and still two blips.
I feel like I have exhausted all options.
    Please help.
