Trying out 10g Express

Hi,
Trying out the 10g Express Database, currently a DBA in MS-SQL 2005 and I think version 2005 put me over the top with its bloated way of doing things.
I downloaded the app and like how the console is 'there' all right in front of you, no guessing no assumptions by what did MS indicate here, there and such.
But I am clueless on the system. Is there a good link/book that gives me comparisons?
Such as is the Oracle SYS account similar to the SQL server 'sa' account?
Is Log archiving in Oracle like Log shipping or transaction log backup in MS-SQL?
And so forth
Thanks

Oracle and SQL Server are very different internally.
so comparision like
-- Oracle SYS account similar to the SQL server 'sa' account?
-- Is Log archiving in Oracle like Log shipping or transaction log backup in MS-SQL?
It's not accurate and properate.
This document should be able to help you.

  • Trying to uninstall oracle 10g express edition

    Hello,
    The title says it all.
I installed the application earlier and I'm now trying to unistall it.
I tried to use the "classic" unistall function from the control panel but it didn't work. When I clicked "unistall" the oracle icon disappeared and but the program is still there.
Is there any other way to unistall it?
The version is "oracle 10g express edition" installed on Windows vista.
Thanks in advance for you're help!
    Gladys.

I used this process and it worked:
    1. Stop all oracle services
    2. Delete all oracle registry entries
    3. Delete C:\program files\oracle directory
    4. Delete oracle_home directory
    5. Delete oracle items from the start menu.
Interesting link for other that may be in the same situation in the future:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/misc/ManualOracleUninstall.php
    extract from the link:
    QUOTE
In the past I've had many problems uninstalling all Oracle products from Windows systems. Here's my last resort method:
    * Uninstall all Oracle components using the Oracle Universal Installer (OUI).
    * Run regedit.exe and delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE key. This contains registry entires for all Oracle products.
    * Delete any references to Oracle services left behind in the following part of the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Ora*
It should be pretty obvious which ones relate to Oracle.
    * Reboot your machine.
    * Delete the "C:\Oracle" directory, or whatever directory is your ORACLE_BASE.
    * Delete the "C:\Program Files\Oracle" directory.
    * Empty the contents of your "c:\temp" directory.
    * Empty your recycle bin.
At this point your machine will be as clean of Oracle components as it can be without a complete OS reinstall.
Remember, manually editing your registry can be very destructive and force an OS reinstall so only do it as a last resort.

  • I have a problem with oracle 10g express edition

    Hello,
I have just installed oracle 10g express edition and I have a problem with the script editor. I can write anything in the window that appears below buttons undo, redo and find, It is like disabled. I use windows XP, Firefox 2.0 ( I have also tried with Iexplorer and It does not work either). I have javascript enabled.
anyone knows what is the problem?
Later,I have installed it in a virtual machine of Windows 2003 Server and It works well but I`d rather use it in my Microsoft XP
    Thank you very much
    Fernando Martínez

It looks like you can fix this if you replace the codearea.xbl.xml and codearea.iframe.html files in the
/i/editor folder with files from an Apex 2.2.1 installation - such as the one on apex.oracle.com.
Since I don't know what the licensing implications are, I will let you figure out the details.

  • An issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on Ubuntu 10.04-64bit

    Hi,
I'm running into an issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on my Ubuntu 10.04-64 bit installed machine using oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb package. The issue actually came up when I was trying to reinstall the package after uninstalling it due to some problem I had with my login credentials. To elaborate further on it, the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script does not get created when I execute the debian package and thus i'm unable to configure the required credentials and stuff after the installation. I doubt whether this has something to do with the procedure I followed when uninstalling the previous package it. But what I did was just what's mentioned in the following [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/install.102/b25144/toc.htm] user guide published by oracle.
Another important clue would be, the platform of my machine is amd64bit although I'm dealing with an installation package preferred for i386. But I believe it's the only thing available in the oracle software download section. Hence I had to use the --force-architecture option to install it. But after reading some post published on this forum, I've figured out that it does not affect the usual execution of the software. Anyway,  I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter.

    Hi,
Finally I've managed to find a solution for this issue. Thanks a lot for all the replies.
Here's how I got rid of it.
Addressing all the facts one by one,
1.The problem of not getting the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script generated was avoided
by removing all the configuration files that were previously created while installing
the product. The following command can be used to accomplish that task.
    *$ dpkg --purge oracle-xe*
2.Next, Initially the password I used during the configuration process was "admin".
Although I tried a couple of times installing the product providing the aforementioned
password, the web UI kept prompting "Invalid Credentials" message not allowing me
to login. But, this particular issue could be avoided by giving some other simple
    password.
Finally, got it working and once again thanks a bunch for taking the burden of
    replying this thread.
    Cheers,
    Prabath

  • Can I import a tablespace into Oracle 10g Express Edition

I am very new to Oracle 10g Express Edition. We have a server running Oracle Enterprise Edition and we have been creating a transportable tablespace to be imported into a few servers. This works fine for us. I would like to find out if I can import the tablespace into Oracle 10g Express Edition. Someone told me that I should be able to do that but I have no clue to how to do it. If this is possible, can someone tell where to find the information how to do this.
    Thanks,
    RJ

I finally tried it and I got the following errors:
IMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 721:
    "BEGIN sys.dbms_plugts.checkCompType('COMPATSG','10.2.0.2.0'); END;"
    IMP-00003: ORACLE error 721 encountered
ORA-00721: changes by release 10.2.0.2.0 cannot be used by release 10.2.0.1.0
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_PLUGTS", line 2004
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
Am I right that the server that I exported the tablespace is using Oracle 10.2.0.2.0 while Oracle Express is 10.2.0.1.0? I looked around and I did not see Oracle Express version 10.2.0.2.0 that I can download. Is there a patch or something to upgrade it?
    Thanks,
    RJ

I running out of ideas. Can anyone help or shed some light as to what is happening. It can't be storage space or memory as there is nothing running on this box.
    Thanks in adavnce

You might have better luck on the Oracle Express Forum, which is the only support location for the product.
Otherwise check the registry entries to make sure there is nothing that might interfere.

  • Unable to connect Oracle 10g Express from Visual Studio Server Explorer

    Hello,
Please help me out here. I am connecting from Visual Studio 2008 to Oracle 10g Express Edition and the I have installed the ODAC 11 and the ODP.NET as well for Visual Studio(Both include Oracle Developer tools). But whenever I tried to connect from my Visual Studio 2008 server explorer so that I can have the database and its object there, I do get this error : "ORA-12560 : TNS: protocol adapter error."
The following is what I specified in my connection box:
    DataSource Name: (Local Database)
    Username : HR
    Password: the password for it.
My OS is : Windows Vista Ultimate.
Please anyone who has solved such error should just help out here.
    Thanks all

Thank you for your reply. I will like to know if you can use Visual Studio. In visual studio there is what we called Server Explorer and from there you can create connection and access all the database server from there. I am able to connect to the Oracle XE through the browser and I was able to crete table and other stuffs like that but when I tried to connect from Visual Studio 2008, I get the 12560 Error. I checked my TNSNAMES and found this:
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = OLAMMIE)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)

Look at what I have in my Sqlnet.Ora file,
    # This file is actually generated by netca. But if customers choose to
    # install "Software Only", this file wont exist and without the native
    # authentication, they will not be able to connect to the database on NT.
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
Please kindly help me out of this as it is very urgent. I can connect from browser using http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex but cannot connect from my C# code and Server Explorer. What is likely to cause this error.
Thank you for helping me in advance.

  • Order Entry Schema for 10G Express Edition

I cannot find the schemas for the tutorial Order Entry - I did find the 8i version from several years ago but they do not seem to work - Where can I find the SQL script for installing OE schemas for 10G Express Edition
    Thanks

Thanks - but this document only points to PDF installation instructions - the only physical sql script files I can find for Schema (OE) are for 8i and they do not seem to work - I know that the 10G database and 9i ship with them but I am using XE - I also tried to download the companion disk for 10g (where they say these schemas are located) and could not find the scripts. This has taken so long to figure out.

  • Can I disable 10g Express Edition from starting at Windows XP boot time?

I am a student who installed 10g Express Edition on my laptop for my classes.
That is really working out great. Wonderful product.
However, I only use it a couple of times a week.
Is there a way that I can disable the automatic start up of 10g XE when I boot up my
Windows XP system? So that I am in a position to go to 'Start Database' when I want
to use the product and start it up manually? That would be great.
My laptop is maxed out at 2GB of RAM and I am trying to hold off buying a new
    pc for a while.
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks for all the help!
I used the Windows GUI for Component Services.
I found OracleServiceXE there set to Automatic.
    I changed it to Manual.
    Restarted my system.
Checked the running Processes - didn't find any Oracle named ones.
Did a Start Database. It started right up.
Then I checked my Processes and found an oracle.exe running.
    So that all looks great.
I did find a couple of other services that I didn't change.
    Those are:
OracleJobSchedulerXE (it was set to Disabled)
OracleMTSRecoveryService (it was set to Manual)
OracleXEClrAgent (it was set to Manual)
OracleXETNSListener (it was set to Automatic)
That was the way those were set before I made my change.
And they are still set that way.
Let me know if I need to do anything with them.
    Thanks!

  • 10g Express install issues on Win Vista

I've installed 10g express on Windows Vista and I keep receiving the following error when trying to start the database --startDB.bat:
    C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\BIN>net start OracleXETNSListener
'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.
    C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\BIN>
Anyone have any ideas on what's causing this issue? Thanks in advance

What's causing the issue is the fact that XE is not supposed to be run on Vista! Well, it could be all sorts of other things, but fundamentally XE is not supposed to run on Vista!
Vista's security model is incompatible with Oracle's way of working. They had to bring out 10.2.0.3 to get the Enterprise Edition/Standard Edition working on it, after all... and no such upgrade to XE has taken place, as far as I am aware.
This thread discusses a possible workaround, but I have no idea if it works or not:
    Install on Vista
Otherwise, depending on your hardware capabilities or the reason why you are intending to deploy this, I would be either (1) using the 10.2.0.3 Enterprise Edition (freely available for home learning purposes at http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/index.html ; or (2) installing VMware Server (freely available at www.vmware.com) and installing Linux or Windows XP/2000 in that and running XE on top of those supported OSes.

  • Installing 10g Express on Vector Linux, hangs on configure

Aug 2: This question is still open - no resolution has been found. Top posting for clarity.
The installation seems to go fine, until configure is attempted. Configure hangs every time at "Starting net listener". This may be a firewall issue, but I've done everything in my power to shut the firewall down during the installation and configure.
    Tech stats: VL6, xcfe 4.6, 1.8G Intel cpu, 2G RAM, 60G hdd space (2 hdd), 15G in /usr, oh - and 3G swap.
I set the kernel parameters according to spec. I changed the group setting to include mr. user (moi) and root.
Has anybody ever heard of the configure script hanging when starting the net listener? Is there some way to get a verbose output to track the error?
    Original message:
Well, I already know it isn't on the list of "approved" Linux flavors, but it's all linux, so . . .
For various reasons, I chose to use Vector Linux to set up a server. I'm trying to install 10g Express. I've used alien on the .deb install package to make a tgz install package. The install seemed to work. I've got plenty of RAM (2G) and swap (3G), and hdd space (15G).
Now it's installed, I can't get to the gui interface, and can't seem to get the service running. I'm a relative linux newb, so my command of the command line is about minimal - about the level of figuring how to ask the way to the bus station and bathroom in a foreign country.
So, I'm getting nothing to run, errors all the way. I got rid of the "not member of dba" problem, but the service still doesn't seem to be running. "ps aux" should show all processes, I thought, but I see no "oracle". The browser can't find the web page. Command line sqlplus gets nothing. Using the Oracle-XE script to configure hangs when it says it is starting the listener.
I'm going to try to figure out how to make sure the kernel parameters are set. I've checked, for instance, this link:
    http://kamranagayev.wordpress.com/2009/05/01/step-by-step-installing-oracle-database-10g-release-2-on-linux-centos-and-automate-the-installation-using-linux-shell-script/
and he discusses a syscrtl.conf file . . . <SNIP> original text deleted - error. Sysctrl kernel params set in sysctrl.conf. Oracle XE start still doesn't show a started Oracle process, and trying to access the home page still get localhost URL unavailable.
Thoughts, suggestions, advice would be welcome. BTW, telling me to stick to RH or OL is not helpful, as I am aware of those options, thank you. I may end up doing something like that, but let's try and get this one working first.
    Thank you.

    Issue closed.
Symptom: Installer hangs at "starting net listener . . ."
[Note: other issues resolved, incl. group member]
Resolution: Use Ubuntu for installation (successful).
Problem is concluded to most likely be either an issue with the way the .deb installation file was converted to tgz, or with the specific settings of Vector Linux somehow interfering with the install. The symptom was repeatable on the target machine.
HOWEVER, if anyone reading this can tell me why the oracle-xe configure command might hang at the particular section of code after it trys to start the net listener, please enlighten me!
    Thank you.

My database version is 10.2.0.1.0 Oracle express.
    Operating system is Windows Vista.
I started installing using the following commands.
    @ C:\temp\apex\apexins.sql
it prompts me for the values of sysaux sysaux temp and c:\temp\apex\images\
If I supply the value for images the sqlplus window closes after scrolling a lot of info.
Enroute it also prompts me for a value for 9:
I don't know what the input shall be.
Then it again stops at enter value for version:
    I used 3.2.1.0
The window scrols a while and closes.
later I changed the password and ran the command.
    @c:\temp\apex\apxldimg.sql c:\temp
