Trying to add a pause after Ken Burns effect to hold the photo

I am trying to set a pause to my still photos after using the Ken Burns effect. So it starts zoomed in on an area of the photo and pulls out and then I want it to hold for a few seconds so you can see the full photo. Any suggestions? I can't find anything anywhere???

1) copy the photo with the Ken Burns effect
2) place the copy after the original photo
3) edit the copy, reverse the order of the Ken Burns effect using the arrows next to the word "Start" so the end point is now the start point, change "Ken Burns" effect to "Crop", and change the duration of the copy
If you want the pause at the beginning
- place the copy before the original photo
- edit the copy by just changing the "Ken Burns" effect to a "Crop" (i.e., crop using the start point),and change the duration of the copy
If you have a "pause, ken burns effect, pause" don't use a transition after the 1st pause and before the 2nd pause.
With a group picture, you can simulate a real Ken Burns effect with
transition, pause, zoom in, pause, [pan, pause] ... [pan, pause,] zoom out, pause, transition

How do I get Ken Burns effect to pan entire photo?

I created a new project and put several photos into it. I am trying to use the Ken Burns effect to pan left to right, and have made the starting box (green) fairly small, and the ending box (red) larger. It is doing what I want, but does not ever quite get to the end that I desire. It spends most of the time on the beginning part, and never shows the very far right corner of the photo. Is there a way to adjust it so I get the entire photo showing on the right side, and spend more time on that part?

Think of iMovie and iDvd (both apps) as one candy bar ....the same candy bar. i-movie is like the candy bar itself whereas iDvd is just the outside paper wrapping. That's what apple means when it describes iDvd'08 and DVDSP as Apple's DVD Authoring tools (meaning we don't normally use DVD software to edit video per se; since the former is normally performed in the video editing app itself like iMovie or FCP/FCE). With this in mind....

Adding Ken Burns effects essentially transforms a slideshow into a QT movie. Furthermore KB effects are normally added within iPhoto (or another 3rd party app like Photo to Movie) which then makes a QT file /movie that can be used within iDvd.

If you opt to use the slideshow features within iDvd; then it won't include KB effects also (to the best of my knowledge unless one adds video to the slideshow as well; a new option w/in iDvd'08).... however you can add transitions to those sides within iDvd's slideshow option, if this is what you wish to do.

Ken Burns effect on imported iphoto photos

Using iMovie 6 updated, when applying KB effect to iPhoto photos imported to either clip board or timeline, the photo renders to black on the timeline. I can import photos if I don't apply KB effect. What do I do? Go back to an earlier edition of iMovie like iMovie 5 which seemed to work? I hope not!

Ken Burns Effect - select "outside" the image

I have some photos that are too tight and need to zoom out more. I am okay with having black areas.
Is there a way to select the crop square beyond the border of the images?

There is no way to do this within iMovie. You will need to use a photo editor such as photoshop to add the black space. You can do this with iPhoto, using an Automator action "Pad Photos".

Non-linear Ken Burns effect?

I want to do more interesting Ken Burn effects than the overused linear panning and zooming. How do you animate graceful curves in your motion paths without having to painstakingly add a keyframe for every adjusted angle?

Two corrections to what I said earlier. The Fotomagico card doesn't work with an OLDER Radeon card, but does work with the current one. And, it is a very convenient program for a polished looking slideshow. However, if you'd like to put any custom transitions or time it accurately to the beat of the music, it's difficult to make changes once you've brought it into FCP.
That being said, I figured out how to get a decent Ken Burns effect. Make the photo the duration you'd like. Slice the photo at the desired duration for the pan, then keyframe that portion. Make the ending keyframe points from that section, the starting points for the next one and keyframe the zoom. Breaking it into two clips seems to come out much better.

Automatic Ken Burns Effect in iMovie HD 6.0

I'm creating a slideshow in iMovie HD 6.0. I've imported about 300 still photos from iPhoto. If you create a slideshow in iPhoto, it applies the Ken Burns effect to all the photos at once. And the effect varies from photo to photo. (It will zoom in, zoom out, move right, move left, etc.) In iMovie HD 6, it appears you have to apply the Ken Burns effect to each photo individually and the only effect I could see was a zoom in.
Similar to iPhoto, if possible in the my iMovie project: I want to apply a Ken Burns effect to all of them at once and (ii) I want the Ken Burns effect to vary from photo to photo.
Possible? How?

The remaining problem (which is the reason I ended up trying to do this in iMovie rather than iPhoto) is that I can't figure out a way to lay down audio tracks that tie to certain slides, fade in and out, etc.
Is there a way to do this in iPhoto that I didn't realize? Or is there a way to do it in iMovie to the imported iPhoto slideshow?
If you want to make these changes to the audio, that editing can be done in iMovie. However, you first should create the Quicktime movie of the slideshow without music. Then import this film into iMovie. You are then able to import your music and do the editing to get the results you want. I have used this method on a project I am currently working on.
I have a question for Rich839. Could you explain what you mean by "Full Quality" Quicktime movie? I want to be sure that I didn't overlook anything.

Ken Burns effect makes photos shimmer when playing, Why?

When viewing a slideshow type project using the Ken Burns effect in iMovie,the photos sort of shimmer, which can distort the picture. Is this normal? Is there something that I am not doing, or something I can do to fix this problem?

Hi Tifany, there are MANY threads about this if you want to search for them.
First thing I will ask though is: are you using iMovie to create a STILL photo slideshow? If so, you will be disappointed with the quality. There are some photos that just seem to attract this shimmering effect, and others that dont. perhaps turn the KB OFF on the ones that do, and see if that makes a difference?
I personally have found that FotoMagico or iPhoto create better quality slideshows than iMovie (which is, afterall, a video editing tool).

I have an older version of imovie. After I change the photos using the Ken Burns effect and save them, the next time I open the file and click 'show photo settings' to change the zoom, the picture appears black and I can't change the zoom?

Have you rendered both iOS 7 and iOS 8 (both of which will work on your iPhone 5) out of the question entirely without trying every possible configuration? The animations can be disabled entirely, if that's the problem. And if the whiter-brighter user interface is the problem, there's reverse-contrast modes that darken everything. You can expose accessibility controls to gain immediate access to these functions to toggle them on and off. I guess my point is you may have decided against upgrading the OS based on an early experience with iOS 7 when Apple has since made changes in later revisions to address some of the usability complaints.
Now, Apple's instructions for downloading older versions of apps is to do so from the Purchased list, not from the app's product page.

Ken Burns Effects Don't Work in iMovie HD (I've Tried Everything)

*Hardware 1:*
PowerMac G4 Dual 500 Mhz, 1GB RAM, Internal 40GB HDD and Internal 320 GB HDD

PowerBook G4 500 Mhz, 512MB RAM, Internal 20 GB HDD
Problem:
This problem occurs on both of my G4 Macs. In iMovie HD, I imported a JPEG from iPhoto with Ken Burns Effects on. The still photo appeared properly in the Clip Viewer initially, but appeared as a black screen in the iMovie Monitor. Once the imported photo with the Ken Burns Effects completed rendering, the clip in the Clip Viewer turned white and appeared as a white screen in the iMovie Monitor. I have tried almost everything I read about in these forums in search of a resolution.
*Resolutions that Failed:*
1. The photo is definitely a .jpg
2. Tried importing the actual .jpg file as well as importing from iPhoto.
3. QuickTime and all other Software updates have been applied and are running on the most current release.
4. Repaired disk permissions.
5. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my main internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
6. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my secondary internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
7. Deleted the 'mac.imovie.plist' file and created a new one.
8. Attempted to do apply the effects logged on as a different user.
9. Saved file, restarted machine and reopened numerous times but the problem persists.
10. Tried a lower resolution photo and the problem persists.
11. Attempted to import all the photos I planned to use, added transitions to all of the clips and rendered completely. Saved the file, restarted the machine and reopened the file with no change to the blank clips.
12. The iMovie trash emptying issue did nothing to help.
*Additional Notes:*
1. The problem is confined to the Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. I am able to work with true video clips without incident.
2. Ken Burns Effects operate properly in iPhoto 6 using the slideshow functionality.
3. I would use iPhoto, but it seems like it would be easier to line up specific sections of an audio track with certain Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. (i.e. – a crescendo at the 16 second mark of the audio track coincides with the end of a 'zoom' on a photo, transition from second 16-17 second mark, new photo at the 17 second mark and pan left to right from 17 second mark to the 25 second mark.) Point is that it lines up precisely with the markers on the audio track, which seems far easier to do in iMovie than iPhoto.
4. Please help me, I'm going nuts troubleshooting this bug! I can't find any resolution that works.

Hmmm. You seem to have tried, without success, most if not all of the methods of resolving a Ken Burns black screen issue.
Some thoughts that have occurred to me:
1. Perhaps your G4 500mhz Mac is not fast enough. I think that the minimum spec for iLife '06 is 733mhz. Might have nothing to do with this problem, but I just mention it.
2. Are the sizes of your images too large, as can happen with some of these new high def cameras? iMovie has trouble working with very large images.
3. Do you have any 3rd pary plug-ins, particularly in Quick Time, that could be causing a conflict?
4. Do you have enough disk space for the project to operate?
5. Have you done a recent Quick Time update? Some users have reported a problem with that.
6. From your post, it appears that you have continuously worked within the same iMovie file that exhibits the Ken Burns problem. If this is true, try creating a new iMovie project and experimenting with a few clips to see if the problem persists in the new project.
Ken Burns issues can be very frustrating. I think that you will need to keep trying things until something works. Wish I could be more help, but perhaps some of the tech experts on this forum will have some workable suggestions.
There is an application called Photo to Movie that reputedly has a far better Ken Burns type of effect. If you can't resolve your problem, you might try downloading that app. I believe that it offers a demo download.

Ken Burns effect locked?

I have imported images from iphoto to idvd to make a movie.
I have been re-arranging images within idvd to my satisfaction and added music.
All images have the Ken Burns effect which I am trying to remove, but my efforts so far have proved unsuccessful.
I would like to have KB on certain selected images, not on all.
Apple support was unable to help saying that the file could be corrupted.
When I start a new test project, all is well, ie: I have control of adding KB or removing it.
I do not want to start the project again from scratch,so my question is...Can KB be locked?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you clarify a couple things for us, Everton, for it's not exactly clear what you're trying to do, and in which application...
I get the feeling that although you've posted in the iMovie forum, you're not creating an iMovie slideshow, right? You're creating a slideshow in either iDVD or iPhoto, I suspect.
You said you imported photos to iDVD and have re-arranged them there. That can be done in iDVD. It's possible to import photos and create your slideshow there.
But then you said you're trying to remove the Ken Burns Effect from select slides. Trouble is, I don't know of any way to add (or remove) the Ken Burns Effect in a slideshow created in iDVD, and that's where I get confused. The Ken Burns Effect feature isn't part of iDVD. (I may have missed it. If so, please point me in the right direction.)
The slideshows we create in iPhoto, on the other hand, do let us add the Ken Burns Effect to ALL the slides randomly, or add it to individual slides, or a combination of both. (The Settings button of the iPhoto slideshow lets us include it to all the slides.)
After we configure a iPhoto slideshow we can send it to iDVD, where it arrives as a movie. But we can't re-arrange the slides nor edit any features in iDVD — it's not that kind of slideshow. It's a movie.
So, it may be that you're trying to do something in iDVD that just can't be done — edit the Ken Burns Effect configured in an iPhoto slideshow. It may be that your editing should be done in iPhoto BEFORE sending the iPhoto slideshow to iDVD.
It's also possible you've created two different kinds of slideshows in your iDVD project, one created by dragging photos to iDVD, the other created by iPhoto. In that case, the iPhoto slideshow may include the Ken Burns Effect but the iDVD slideshow would not. To modify the Ken Burns Effect features, you have to edit the slideshow in iPhoto and re-import it to iDVD.
When it comes to making slideshows, we have an abundance of riches. iLife perhaps offers us too many ways to make them, which can lead to some confusion.

Ken Burns Effect Pollutes Everything

If you're putting together a slideshow, do not turn on the KB Effect for anything. Ever. I hate to say this, for I love this feature. It has enhanced many of my slides. However, it's a sorcerer's apprentice.
It causes nightmares once it's in your timeline. You can't update its durations, unless you delete the slide & start all over. I've found, oddly, that if a transition is connected, and you try to reduce the duration of the slide, after the transition is rendered, the slide, instead of having reduced duration, is actually increased by the amount of the reduction you wanted!
Beware of using KBE for any photo in your iPhoto imported album. Once you invoke KBE on any photo, it pollutes every photo you click on, thereafter, whether you turn it off or not. Karl Petersen posted a message last month, praising this polluting feature of KBE:
"The most important is that all of the Ken Burns settings, the KB checkbox, zoom, pan and duration are controlled by the LAST imported clip you made, or a previously-imported clip you clicked on. THAT's what sets the default setting for your next import(s). (A very nice feature, by the way, for it lets you apply the Ken Burns settings of one clip to the next photos you import. You don't have to reconfigure settings each time.)"

Second, I don't know what he means by "import." iM4, in moving a photo from the Pane to the Viewer (timeline), says it's importing it, but I already imported it from iPhoto4. Third, I'm not so lazy as to resent having to reconfigure individual photos, if it means I have control over what I want to reconfigure & what I don't want to reconfigure.
Third, I wish Apple would realize users do have a brain: They don't need everything automated. There should be two buttons: KBE on for all, another KBE off for all. KBE off would allow the user to select which photos KBE is confined to. One thing I like about Microsoft is, it doesn't assume anything about the user. The user has choice & is always in control.
I'm really at the point of not invoking KBE for anything, anymore. It's causing too much frustration, & it's not worth the time trying to figure it out, especially once the photo is in the timeline.
BTW, what's the relationship between the Monitor, the Timeline, & the window in the upper right corner of the Photo Pane?

The conclusions you've reached about the Ken Burns Effect are so strange it makes me wonder if you've understood how it works. Unlike the Ken Burns Effect in iPhoto — which adds the effect on-the-fly as a sequence of photos is played — the Ken Burns Effect in iMovie affects how the photo is imported and rendered. iMovie renders video — creates a movie clip — based on your Ken Burns settings.
Remember, iMovie is all about creating video clips that play as part of a movie. iPhoto, on the other hand, has no movie. It simply displays a series of images. It never creates a movie until we export the slideshow to a QuickTime movie.
Changing the Ken Burns settings of a photo in iPhoto simply changes how that image is played in the iPhoto slideshow. Changing the Ken Burns settings of an iMovie clip, on the other hand, changes how it is (immediately) rendered into a new video clip.
You can't update its durations, unless you delete the slide & start all over
Of course you can change a duration. Click on the rendered clip in the Timeline, change the duration, and Update the clip.
Of course, if you've edited a previously-rendered clip — added a title or transition, for example — then it is no longer a KB clip. But if you remove the title or transition you can update the KB settings normally.

I never suggested you use the same KB effect on all your clips. I suggested that if you want to avoid having to reconfigure your Ken Burns settings before importing a photo, first click on a clip that already uses those KB settings. This saves time and considerable aggravation. I find this especially useful because the KB settings window is so clumsy (and buggy).

Each time you add a photo from the iPhoto list to your iMovie project it is imported to the project. iMovie adds the photo to the project, then renders the video clip, if needed. (The imported photo is retained so you can Update the clip later, if you want.)
Third, I'm not so lazy as to resent having to reconfigure individual photos, if it means I have control over what I want to reconfigure & what I don't want to reconfigure.
Fine, iMovie lets you do that. There's nothing preventing you from configuring new Ken Burns settings for each photo. (My suggestion was to avoid having to do that unnecessarily.)

It's that point which makes me wonder if you've misunderstood something important. The Ken Burns settings we apply in iMovie do NOT control how the movie PLAYS in iMovie, at least not directly, like it does in iPhoto (and other slideshow software). The KB settings control how a clip is RENDERED when the photo is imported to iMovie. Once rendered, that clip is FIXED unless we re-render (Update) it. Changing its Ken Burns settings changes the clip ONLY if we re-render the clip.
Another way to think about it is that the Ken Burns Effect affects how a photo is imported. Once imported, it does not affect how it plays.

There's no pollution of anything. For the reasons I mentioned earlier, the settings do NOT change anything about existing photos or clips until you Apply those settings, which (usually) causes iMovie to re-render the clip.
Try to re-think how Ken Burns works, where you assume iMovie is creating video, not just a series of images it plays in sequence. Those are two very different things.

Kens Burns effects not saved in "original" saved slideshows in iphoto 11

i upgraded from iphoto 9 to iphoto 11. I have several saved slideshows. When I opened the saved slideshows in iphoto11 some of the Ken Burns effects were lost (some turned out to be Ken Burns effects on a landscape photos). I tried to add the Ken Burns effects to the landscape photo in the "original theme" and could not do so. The effect would operate until I closed iphoto11 and then would fail to operate when I reopened iphoto and ran the saved slideshow. This also occurred when I made a new saved slideshow. This issue only occurred in landscape photos and did not occur in portrait photos. The Ken Burns effects on a portait photo was updated when going from 9 to 11 and new Ken Burns effects could be added to a new and old saved slideshow.
Of the 12 Themes in saved slideshows only Ken Burns and Original have Ken Burns effects available. The Ken Burns effects are saved when Iphoto 11 is closed for both portrait and landscape photos in the Ken Burns theme and for portrait photos in the Original Theme. Landscape photos did not save in the "original theme"
I wondered if some how my library was corrupted so I went to a MAC store and made saved slideshows using their machine and their iphoto 11. I reproduced these results on an Apple store IMAC. Apple is aware

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As TD pointed out, making a QT movie file of a slideshow involves rendering which is then encoded once again in iDVD. IMO, the best image quality for a slideshow is obtained when you create the slideshow entirely within iDVD. Of course there's no KB effect.
If you create the show in iMovie you can get around the double encoding by closing iMovie once the slideshow is finished. Then open the iMovie project file/package (Option-click on the project file and select Show Package Contents option), find the iDVD folder and drag the .mov file in it into the open iDVD window. This will let iDVD do the rendering of the various transitions and special effects and provide a better final product.
You must remember that iDVD's final resolution is only 640 x 480.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. How do I remove Ken Burns effect from individual photos?

The instructions say to " In the Photo Settings window, deselect the Ken Burns effect checkbox and then click apply". My interface shows the word "update" instead of "apply" which has worked when I change other settings such as the length of time a photo is displayed. However every time I deselect KB...it comes back! I have also tried to constantly save the project, trying to save the deselect process.
Has anyone an idea? BTW the KB effect is very poor for most vertical pictures as it will cut off the top of the photo.

the updated clip to disk. That can occur if the
project resides on an external disk that uses the
wrong disk format. iMovie requires the Mac OS

BTW the KB effect is very poor for most vertical
pictures as it will cut off the top of the photo.
• The Ken Burns effect can't read our minds. It only
does what we tell it to do. For photos that have a
portrait orientation it's normal to adjust the
zoom/pan so the rendered clip stays within the photo.
Note that it's possible to drag the photo in the
Preview window to adjust both the Start and End
points. So for a tall photo you may want to zoom/pan
up-or-down instead of side-to-side.
Note too that the settings in the Photo Settings
window always accept those settings of the last photo
we imported, updated or clip clicked on. So once
you've imported a tall photo with the Ken Burns
settings you like, you can easily apply those
settings for another photo. Just click on that
previously-rendered tall clip in the Timeline before
importing your next tall photo.

Thank your for your input and in the last couple of days I have been able to produce the iMovie. But I now have another question about burning it.
Let me point out that I was able to deal with the Ken Burns issues by deleting the photos I wanted to change and replacing with new photos and using your tips + the help menu on "adding motion to your photos" to zooming right / left / vertically (which was very helpful).
Now that I have my project I cannot burn it as I get the following:there is not enough space to encode the aspects and in the pull down: "iDVD needs 2.350 GB of disk space to encode the remaining assets, but only 1.231 GB are available" I tried to cut down the files by deleting 5 chapters thus reducing the menu to one page showing chapters. I also re-saved the project with a new name.
BTW - I did burn it once but needed to fix it as the opening menu didn't have sound and I saw some other small photo details I wanted to fix. This version had 11 chapters on 2 menu pages with photos in the background. Essentially all I did was add a few more photos in motion and add the sound. That is why I thought maybe it was too much and removed the chapters saving one remaining page with music. I also do not have it on wide screen format as that uses more memory.
Can you help me with this? I don't understand why I'm getting the same message no matter what I do.

Slideshow -- Ken Burns effect

IPhoto slideshows not only has the ability to dissolve between photos, but includes the Ken Burns effect. While the ability to use transitions like dissolve in a slideshow is supported in Aperture, I have not found a way to float the photo to the left, right, down, up, etc. while being displayed. This effect really adds polish to a slide presentation, however, it is not supported in iDVD, DVD Studio Pro (at least version 2 which I have), and it appears it isn't supported in Aperture. Is it hidden somewhere in Aperture that I haven't found yet, and if not, why is iPhoto the only app that seems to have this feature? It seems weird that iPhoto would eclipse two professional-level apps (DVD Studio Pro and Aperture) with regards to a feature.
If anyone knows for sure, let me know!

Thanks for you reply. The reason for my reply above is that the discussion pages ask to add some remark to mark the thread as answered, so I just added that "no known answer". This was discussed with others in another topic, and yes you are correct, the discussion was on the very pro vs. amateur point you brought up.

Pan and Zoom (Ken Burns Effect)

Does iDVD 06 support the Ken Burns Effect? When I import a Slide Show from iPhoto to iDVD it looses the transitions and the pan and zoom features. I can add the transitions back through iDVD, but I can't find anywhere to add the Ken Burns effect back to the slide show? Is it possible? I will be really disappointed if iDVD 06 does not support this feature.

I don't use iPhoto, so I can't help you with that, but I can tell you that iDVD does NOT have the KB Effect.
