Trying to add a Win7 laptop to network of 2 XPs.

I'm running a home network with a desktop wired to a modem and WRT54G, with a laptop, also XP. Tried to add a new laptop, OS: Win7. The new laptop says it can access the network but can't access the Net. If I wire the laptop directly to the router, it accesses the Net, no problem.
What's the best method to add the new laptop?
 Thanks for any assistance

Thanks for your interest. I've loaded the latest firmware in the router. Afterwards all computers, including my new laptop could see the net and get on. Then, as soon as I added some security in the form of a WEP password, the new laptop could not get past the security log on. The other laptop had no problem. At least this time the new laptop asked for a password but then couldn't successfully use it to get on. I'm making progress, but clearly Win7 seems to have problems communicating with my old router. At least that's how it seems. I'm thinking of trying some other form of security before I abandon the old router. I have not yet tried to set file sharing or other forms of establishing a local network for my computers, right now I'm just trying to get the new laptop to access the net with some security. The local network and file sharing etc., will be a new headache.
Again, thanks for your interest.

  • AirPort Extreme wireless was working fine until I tried to add the extreme to extend network range...now neither is working and I can't fix.

Help please?  I got the Express yesterday and had it set up and working fine.  However I found the signal and connection wasn't going far enough/fast enough for all areas of my home I wanted it to.  Today I got the Extreme.  I unplugged the Express, plugged in the Extreme and set up the new wireless network for that one just fine and it was working great.  However, I still wasn't getting quite the connection/speed I wanted through out my house, so I tried to add the Express to extend the network I set up from the Extreme and now neither one is working.  I tried resetting and starting over from the beginning but I can't even get just the Extreme to work by itself and am not sure what to do.

The following are the basic steps to configure an extended network with two 802.11n AirPort. Please take a look to check if anything was missed when you configured yours.
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Error when trying to add a printer in the network

I set up a network at home w/2 Airport extreme units. One as the main unit and one as remote base station.
I connected a printer to the usb port of the remote base.
When I try to add this printer to my Mac I can see it (under bonjour printers) but I get an error each time I try to add it (Error: -9672)
    Any help will be appreciated

Two trips to the Apple Store solved it, with Canon input which helped to isolate problem.
First Trip: At the Apple Store, with my MacBook Pro, Time Capsule & Canon Pixma IP 5000 printer, wireless printing worked just fine, but at that time, the Genius did not connect TC to the internet. Here are the sequence of steps done by Genius Bar:
    1. Connect USB cable between Time Capsule & printer.
    2. Power on Time Capsule; waited til light was yellow flashing, meaning it was powered up. Genius ignored TC's alert that we weren't connected to internet
    3. Plug in printer.
    4. Turn printer on.
    5. System Preferences > Print & Fax preference > Click + sign to add printer. Printer appeared under bonjour printer, and then hit Add button. Selection worked and we could print at the Apple Store.
At home, I did not initially have success. My light on the Time Capsule was green. I remembered the Genius did our test with the TC light flashing yellow as he was not connected to the internet. So I started all over again, but this time I disconnected the ethernet cable between my cable modem and the TC. Followed all steps above but this time the Time Capsule light was flashing yellow. And it worked! Wireless printing was functional. Then plugged ethernet cable back into TC, and did appropriate start up. Then tried to print and got message: Error 306 A communication error has occurred.
Contacted Canon tech support. With 2 replies, the bottom line was "Canon does not support the configuration you have inquired about. This does not necessarily mean it will not work, but that Canon cannot provide assistance on this configuration."
Today, Trip 2 to Genius Bar: Brilliant lady did some thinking as I didn't have time this rushed morning to lug printer. She looked at my Mac's Preferences > Security > Firewall and saw my selection: "Set access for specific services and applications, with File Sharing, Printer Sharing, Screen Sharing, and then lots of apps like MS Word, Safari, iTunes, etc. " She said it may be a port problem and suggested I check "Allow all incoming connections". I got home, changed my Security preferences and wireless printing with the TC WORKED and is still working now.
    Hope this helps you.

  • HT1420 How can you deauthorise devices from an iPad? I no longer have the computer which is associated with my account and I'm trying to add my new laptop but all i have is iPod iPad and iPhone that are associated with that account.

I had an old apple ID and now I have a new one. I made many purchases in my old ID and I'm trying to transfer that information to my iPad and iPhone however, it won't let me connect my new laptop so I can make those changes. It says I have 5 devices but I don't have 2 of those old devices. The only ones i have are my iphone ipad and ipod but it looks like i can deauthorize all devices on those.
    What do i do?!?!?!?!?

Deauthorize all then authorize the active computers.
ipods/ipads/iphones are not authorized at all.  Authorization applies only to computers.

  • Trying to add wireless router to MAC network - please help!

Hi - I recently purchased a Linksys G wireless router. My ethernet port was used by a squeezebox player, but is now occupied by a recent cable modem upgrade. In an attempt to run both the squeezebox and the cable modem, I purchased the wireless router.
With all the modem connected to the router's 'internet' port and an ethernet cable between router 1 and MAC, squeezebox runs fine. I don't get any internet access though. If I disconnect the cable from the router and plug it directly into the MAC, internet comes back on, but no squeezebox. Any suggestions?
By the way, the is a G4 tower running 10.3.9 - any help is greatly appreciated!

The instructions are general, if you can already access the setup page go to the MAC ADDRESS CLONE subtab then enable that and click clone your pc's mac. Power off everything (but not disconnecting the ethernet cables) then turn them on one by one, modem router and your mac computer...make sure the lights are stable before you turn on the next. (for your Mac restart it.) Make sure your mac computer is set to automatic and no ther connections are enabled, you should be able to get online after that.

Trying to add a WRT610n to my home network.  When I try to connect to the router from my XP desktop with a CAT5 cable it does not see it.  Was able to connect from my Vista laptop both with a CAT 5 and wirelessly.  Changed the router IP address to 192.168.2.1 as instructed by tech support. Desktop still does not see the router.  Connect desktop to Westell wireless modem/router with a CAT 5 - no problem.  Also connected the desk top to a regular router no problem..
Got no help from tech support - was told that it's not their problem so it must be a computer hardware problem.  If it was a hardware issue with my computer then why didn't I have a problem with the other two routers?
I am sure it is a configuration problem but I can not get any support for Linksys?  Any ideas?

Well you need to assign the static DNS to the pc in the range of the new lan ip 192.168.2.1 & you will be able to go online wired & wirelessly.

You would need to get the IP address of your printer then manually add a network print queue.
To get the IP address, on the control panel of your printer, press on Setup > Network Setup > TCP/IP > View/Set IP address.

  • HT5022 I'm trying to add a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

I'm trying to add my HP wireless printer as a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

Why would you need to ADD a new Client. Unless the APE sytem is completely different then any other Wireless router the printer should get an IP address from the router. That is IF the printer is setup to get an IP from the LAN DHCP server.
Now you may want to make that IP it does get a Staticly assign IP address so it never changes, which will screw up printing if it does change. But i don't know if you can do that with APE routers.

I am trying to add a wireless printer to my MacBook Pro.  It was working properly until we had to get a new modem.  I have gone through the steps with the printer customer service rep, and it was working properly for one day.  When I booted up the next morning, the printer was no longer "connected".  It will work if I have the printer and computer connected, but I much prefer the wireless capability.  Suggestions? The printer is a Brother MFC7860DW.  The other laptop in the house (Dell) can print wirelessly so I don't think it's an issue with the modem or the printer.

  • Trying to add a Wireless router as a switch on an existing Wired network

    Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble with my WRT54GS v.2.0
I'm trying to add wireless access to my existing network here at work. I think the main network is using Dlink 40+ node switches.
I've been reading around and I've tried to turn off DHCP on the router, but when my computer tries to find a connection, it times out. I'm not even trying to get the wireless to work, just LAN for now.
The router will get an ip address assigned by the main network, so it's connected, but I can't get the computer through to the main network.
Is there anything I need to be setting up on the computer? Can this even be done?
    Thanks,
    Alex

please make sure that you dont use the internet port on the router, use the local ports...(1,2,3,4)

  • Trying to add LC580 to network

    Hi all,
I have an airport extreme network consisting of: an iMac G4 connected through ethernet to an airport extreme base station, an airport express unit "extending" that wireless network, and a Mac mini as a wireless client. I am trying to add a "new" computer to the network, my LC 580; it's plugged into the airport express base unit via ethernet (the LC has a 10 Mb ethernet card).
On the LC, I have two hard drives and one has OS 7.6.1, and the other OS 8. I seem to have gotten the closest to connecting with OS 7.6.1, so i'll start there. In the "Network" control panel, I have it set to use "Ether Talk, slot 1". When I go to the Chooser and select AppleShare, my Mini shows up in the "Available servers" list, but when I try to connect to it, I get this error message "This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFT protocol. You cannot connect to it".
In OS 8, when I even try to select Ethernet under the AppleTalk control panel, it gives me an error message about the ethernet card, so I'm guessing 8 can't work with the card.
Any suggestions, or can this even be done?
    Thanks!

Some more(sorry, didn't find as quick as I needed). There have been two threads connecting to a mini, perhaps you can use them:

  • Trying to get my apple laptop to connect to wireless network

I have an Airport Express (AE) and have successfully set up a wireless network in which 3 other computers (my work laptop, my wife's work laptop, mother-in-law's laptop) are all able to connect to this wireless network.
However, I have been unsuccessful in trying to get my apple laptop to connect to the same wireless network.
I'd really like to unchain our apple laptop from my office.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Welcome to the discussions forum EdmundF.
Doesn't your home network name appear in your Airport menulet?

  • PROBLEM: Trying 2 add an AIRPORT EXPRESS to an already existing AIRPORT EXTREME network

I'm trying 2 add an AIRPORT EXPRESS to an already existing AIRPORT EXTREME network in my home.
I see the EXPRESS in ARPT UTILITY but when I click on "CONTINUE" or "MANUAL", the only option I'm given is to SWITCH networks, which I do not want to do.
I am using a MACBOOK PRO (MAC OS X 10.6.8)
Can someone offer me help with this?
    Thanks!

Hi, I have a similiar setup.  When you click onto the express, and it asks you to switch networks, it's not actually asking you to "change" networks.  It's just actually switching to the xpress.  When the xpress comes up, you'll input the name of your existing network, which you set up and named for the extreme.  You'll have to change the extreme to "participate in a network", which is what you'll also do for the xpress.  In the extreme under the WDS tab, you'll input the wds mode as "wds main".  And then put a check mark in the "allow wireless clients".  Where it says wds remotes, you'll input the the airport id's for the xpress's.  In each of the xpress's, you'll set up as participating in a wds network.  In the xpress's, under the wds tab, you'll set the wds mode to remote, and check
mark in the allow wireless clients.  You'll have to input the airport id of the extreme in the wds main block.  Under the internet icon on top, in internet conect tab for connect using: airport (wds), connect sharing: off (bridge mode).
Remember to insure that the express's show the same channel as the extreme, if you're using 802.11n (80211b/g compatible).  Of course the security that you decide to use should also be the same.

i'm trying to add my airport express to my network. The airport utility shows a message that its gathering info about my network then suddenly an unexpected error message appears. Why is that?

Until Bob Timmons gets back to you, first decide what you would like the Express to do. I understand you want it for AirPlay remote speakers, which you can certainly do.
I am assuming that you are not using an Apple AirPort router; if that's not the case stop here and let me know.
If your existing router is not an Apple AirPort Base Station, the Express:
can "join" an existing wireless network as a client, for the sole purpose of streaming music. If that's what you want to do, do not connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable.
can "extend" an existing wired network to serve as an additional wireless access point, which can also stream music. If that's what you want to do, connect its WAN port to an available LAN port on your router using an Ethernet cable.
Then, "hard reset" the Express according to the instructions below, and configure it. The prompts should be self-explanatory. If you run into trouble, describe which of the above two configurations you decided upon, and the point at which you're getting the "unexpected problem".
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then gently press and hold its tiny reset button. Don't apply any more force than required to feel a tactile click.  Keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.
