Trying to add a Wireless router as a switch on an existing Wired network

Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble with my WRT54GS v.2.0
I'm trying to add wireless access to my existing network here at work. I think the main network is using Dlink 40+ node switches.
I've been reading around and I've tried to turn off DHCP on the router, but when my computer tries to find a connection, it times out. I'm not even trying to get the wireless to work, just LAN for now.
The router will get an ip address assigned by the main network, so it's connected, but I can't get the computer through to the main network.
Is there anything I need to be setting up on the computer? Can this even be done?
Thanks,
Alex

please make sure that you dont use the internet port on the router, use the local ports...(1,2,3,4)

  • Trying to connect a wireless router to a switch

We have an 8 port router in the closet(linksys) with the cable connection and in our main room we have a five port 10/100 (By linksys) switch that connects to the system just fine all hardwired, and we have internet already working off of that.
We tried to connect the WRT54G wireless router to the switch because we asked at the store and they said if we had a switch already that's what we'd want. I changed the ip address on the new router to the 192.168.2.1, saved the settings and then tried to plug it into the switch. As soon as we plugged into the switch, anything else connected to the switch stopped getting internet. I also tried to just leave it at the default and same problem. I tried the 'change the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and disable DHCP server and then going into advanced and changing gateway to router and again, same problem. Regardless of what I do anytime I plug that wireless into the switch everything on the switch stops working.
How would we get both the switch and the router to work?

I assume that you want your wireless and your wired computers to all share the same network, and all connect to the Internet through your 8 port router in the closet.  And the 8 port router uses the 192.168.1.x  address space.  ---  is that all correct?
If so, disconnect the WRT54G from the rest of your network, then using a computer wired to the WRT54G, do the following:
    a)  set the "Local IP address"  (not the "Internet Connection Type"  address)  to 192.168.1.2    I am assuming that you are not using this fixed adddress elsewhere in your network.
    b) Leave the DHCP server set to "disabled".
    c) Wire any port from your 8 port router or switch, to any numbered port on the WRT54G.  Do not connect anything to the "Internet" port on the WRT54G.
Note that with this setup, your 8 port router will control your router settings (port forwarding, DHCP server, firewall, etc.).  Your WRT54G will only contol your wireless settings.
If you need more help, please state the model of your 8 port router and switch.

I am trying to add a wireless printer to my MacBook Pro.  It was working properly until we had to get a new modem.  I have gone through the steps with the printer customer service rep, and it was working properly for one day.  When I booted up the next morning, the printer was no longer "connected".  It will work if I have the printer and computer connected, but I much prefer the wireless capability.  Suggestions? The printer is a Brother MFC7860DW.  The other laptop in the house (Dell) can print wirelessly so I don't think it's an issue with the modem or the printer.

This past month I have been having problems connecting to my home wireless connection. I have a MacBook Pro OSX Version 10.6.8. Previously I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried unplugging the wireless router, turning off the wirless airport, deleting the network name from my list of servers and trying to reconnect this way. These methods have worked temporarily, but the same problem keeps coming back. Most of the time my personal wireless connection does not even come up among the list of available networks. My fellow flatmates have PCs and both of them are able to connect to the network without problem.
The router is a d-link model DIR-615. I am not tech savy, so if any other information need to be provided in order to better understand my situation, please let me know.
    Please help me!

If I open the list of networks in a window it says "connection timeout," but if I just select it from the drop down it tries for awhile and then stops with no prompt. When I try to run network diagnostics it says "sorry, we can't connect to the internet" (or some solution-free variation of that)

  • Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme but error says Ethernet unplugged.

Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme and error says Ethernet Unplugged.

So, AirPort Utility running on the Windows Vista desktop can "see" the AirPort Extreme and displays its icon, but gives that error message at some point in the setup process? How far does it get?
Other questions that may help me (or somebody else) understand your problem better:
Which of the pieces were verified as working before the introduction of the AirPort Extreme?
Did you have the desktop computer attached to the Verizon GT704WGB with one of the Ethernet cables you are now trying to use? Which one? Have you tried the other one to be sure it also works?
Are you using the same port on the GT704WGB? Have you tried another one?
If the desktop has multiple ethernet ports, are you using the same one?
Had you done any special configuration of the ethernet port on the Verizon GT704WGB to get it to work with your desktop?
What category ethernet cable are you using? 3? 5? 5e? 6?

  • Time Capsule w/o wireless on existing wired network.

I'd like to plug in a Time Capsule (1TB) into an existing wired network and use it as a central Time Machine backup device for multiple workstations. The wireless can remain on/off, I don't really need it. I just want it for the central storage.
Will Time Capsule work that way?

I have a similar but sort of in reverse. I have set up my Mac Air via ethernet and would like to get my PC to do a backup as well to Time Capsule. I have put the airport utility on my PC and it recognizes the TC. How do i tell it to backup since I don't have something like Time Machine on the PC?

  • Add second wireless router

I need to add a second WiFi access point for coverage in my house.  My primary access point is the Uverse Arris NVG589.  Everything with this is running correctly. When I add a second wireless router (Cisco E1200), I connect Ethernet from the Uverse router to one of the Cisco LAN ports (not the WAN/Internet port), and disabled DHCP and NAT on the Cisco.  However, while the hardwired routing works fine on the Cisco on several devices, I can't get wireless to work:  All wireless devices want to attach on WiFi back to the Uverse, and if I try to force them to connect to the Cisco, I can see that the devices are not getting IP addresses assigned. I've tried using the same SSID as the Uverse as well as a different SSID.  I've tried turning wireless security off on the Cisco.  (I've even tried turning DHCP and NAT back on.)  However, nothing seems to change--Devices can't get an IP address from the Cisco. Any ideas?

  • Trying to buy a Wireless Router

I'm looking around for a wireless router for my powerbook and the spec sheets of every router I look at seems to say that it will only work with PC's.
Wanted to get the Linksys WRTG54GS but got a little worried when there was nothing about Mac compatibility. I've never had compatibility issues with wireless internet on my powerbook, but the router doesn't specify it'll work with Macs.
Can someone let me know if this one will get the job done?

Renato, First, Welcome to the discusiions..
The technology is the same for either..Pc or MAC..the main dfference is Mac offers Airport, which is no more than there name for wireless technology..
and there Airport and Airport Extreme technology and software will automatically recognise wireless service and enable you to use it with a minimum of work to configure...
Pc wireless often will need to be manually configured.with IP addresses and subnet masks etc. Apples software is far superior to PC when it comes to wireless..
A, Wireless Router, no matter the manufacture, do basicly the same thing..The main difference is $$$$$cost.
Airport Extreme does offer a built in USB port on the back that allows for wireless printing..
You will also find that NONE of the major manufactures say much about MAC..the reason is MAC only has 10% of the market compared to 90% PC that is the reason several of us choose to use all MAC products because we know they work with a minimum of hassel trying to fiqure out how to make it work on a MAC...Good Luck...Don

  • Getting Error -9672 when trying to add printer wirelessly

    Hi,
I seem to be getting an error -9672 when trying to add my HP PSC 1410 wirelessly to my airport network. I've tried on my intel iMac and my mac book but I'm getting the same error. Any suggestions on how to solve this?
    ANY help is much appreciated.
    Matt.

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. A quick look at the iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility List doesn't show this particular model. This doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.

  • Want to add second wireless router to network

I have a Actiontec MI424WR and would like to add a second wireless router, a Linksys Cisco E2000 which has N capabilities. What is the best way to add this second router so that they both work as wireless routers? Thank you for your help.

If I'm not mistaken, they can leave the SSID on both access points to be the same. You just don't want them to run on the same channel. The devices with either setup see an Access Point by it's MAC Address. It should have no problem roaming onto another Access point if one starts to get too weak for the device's liking. Even with separate SSIDs, that will still happen.
What the above poster means by setting up the Linksys as an Access Point is the following:
1: Disable DHCP on the Linksys
2: Disable the Firewall, UPnP support in the Linksys
3: Configure BOTH the ActionTec and Linksys to operate on WPA2 Security (The Linksys E2000 is a Wireless N router. Wireless N requires WPA2 to work to it's potential).
4: Set both the ActionTec and Linksys to separate channels, either 1, 6, or 11. It's best to keep them off each other's ranges due to the distance between the two APs. The Linksys should only be set to use 20Mhz wide channels for Wireless N. DO NOT OPERATE IT ON AUTO/40MHZ!
5: Connect the Linksys to the ActionTec by plugging the Linksys into the network using one of the LAN Ports. Do not use the Internet port on the Linksys!
Just keep in mind, if you do set up the Linksys to run on the same SSID as the ActionTec, the security settings (Key, Encryption type, MAC filtering) must be identical. If you go down the separate SSID route as mentioned above, you're free to keep the security settings separate. Just keep in mind my pointer with WPA2, though.

  • Tried to update WRT54G wireless router, upgrade failed, router broken.

I tried to upgrade my new WRT54G wireless router with the new firmware. I got an error message that said "Upgrade are failed". I used the correct version of the firmware for my router (I have a Ver 8). I tried to factory reset, but the router is still broken. Any suggestions on what I could do? The entire page I access via IP is broken. All the text is messed up the the links don't work. I can use the router to access my network, but it will not connect to the Internet at all.

I have no firewalls, and it's for sure not a computer related problem. I have tried on three seperate computers. The upgrade failed, it won't let me access the setup page. I have tried to go onto the Internet since, and it lets me, but 80 percent of all Internet sites don't work. This is what shows up in the router firmware page when I go thru the IP. ýýý†††···ÇÇǶ¶¶¼¼¼öööiiiSSS¿¿¿ÂÂÂßßßààà´´´¯¯¯***^^^uuuAAAllØhhÐééé²²²äää–––ÃÃÃBBBâââmmm¾¾¾DDDWWW˜˜˜“““ìììÎÎÎ LLLaaajjÓyyy ¸¸¸ÝÝÝøøøÉÉÉãããÞÞÞ:::×××ÓÓÓkkk’’’nnn™™™³³³©©©ççç œœœxxx~~~ÁÁÁffÍ```ggÍ CCCiiБ‘‘ ŠŠŠ@@@žžž YYYµµµÐÐЪªª¥¥¥??9èèè___ÆÆƉ‰‰ÜÜÜšššÒÒÒ¨¨¨¡¡¡vvváááØØØÙÙÙƒƒƒTTT$$$ÍÍÍŒŒŒÚÚÚÔÔÔ••• ËËËÅÅÅëë뺺º‚‚‚°°°|||}}}jjÕVVV„„„\\\]]]rrrbbÅ??;ŸŸŸ[[¶»»»[[[%%IGGG???eeË£££íí퇇‡fffooÝOO __¾kkÕGGŽ``Á88oddÇKK•CC†hhÏîîî±±±>>|SS¦77mÛÛÛæææpppÖÖÖ®®®ÈÈÈHH êêê??)ÌÌÌÊÊÊÄÄÄ????:llÙZZ²ŽŽŽWW®99q;;vAA‚ÿÿÿffÌ Message The rest of the pages in the setup menu ether show up blank, or give the same message as above.

  • Problems with my Wireless Router since Mac Switch

Ever since my wife and I bought our MacBooks (we have one each) I have been having issues with my Linksys Wireless G Router.
    http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54GS-Wireless-G-Broadband-SpeedBooster/dp/B0001 D3K8A
That is the one I have.
I use WEP encrypted, DCHP auto allocate on IP addresses and both machines are always within 20 feet of the router. However we get dropped connections to the router very often, almost daily, and it usually happens within a few minutes of booting a machine. The only way to restore the connection is to power down the router and restart it. This always works.
I've already tried the following. Changed the router channel from 5 to 7, in case there is interference. Changed the WEP password (it's 128-bit hex) and even tried limiting the DCHP allocations to two machines and adding Mac Addressing.
It could just be a hardware fault, but the previous machines (a PC laptop and an iBook G3) never had this issue. I did a router restart possibly once every 2 or 3 months. Now it's daily. Any advice?

Believe it or not I got the cheapest wireless router in the shop! A Belkin Wireless G router. It was easy to set up, supports all the standards, has great range and hasn't missed a beat since I installed it and it cost $35. All 3 home machines (2 MacBooks and a Windows desktop) all link via it flawlessly.
I nearly went for the base station from Apple, but at $200 it was hard to justify.
Looking around at some forums, the Linksys seems to have issues. I had the version 5. I also updated it to the most recent firmware about 10 days before I had this problem. My MacBook and my Wife's MacBook both disconnected from it the same day. By connecting manually (assigning a manual IP address and giving that address directly to the router) worked until you restarted, but would only work for one machine at a time.
When I saw the 2 MacBook Pro's in the cafe having EXACTLY the same issue, I was convinced it was the router. It had the same firmware version number mine did (ver 1.01)
