Trying to add my HP Photosmart c309a

Trying to add my HP Photosmart c309a printer.  Under system preferences, Print and Scan, click + to add printer, highlight the HP Photosmart c309a printer, and even though it says the selected printer software is available from Apple, after I click "add" it searches and comes back with: Can't install the software for the HP Photosmart C309a series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.

I have an HP 2710 All-in-one (wireless) hooked up to my network. I never have problems printing, but when I scan, I have to go to the printer, press the scan button, then select the "computer" I want to connect too, which is my macbook. If I do not go to the printer and select the macbook then I get the same error you are talking about. Have you tried this solution yet?

  • Error:-9672 when trying to add HP Photosmart C3180 printer.

    Printer: HP Photosmart C3180
"An error occured while trying to add the selected printer. Error:-9672"
Printer works fine if connected directly to my iMac. But, through "Airport Extreme Base Station", I get the error.
Anyone with same printer having same problem? Anyone solutions?
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I found the same thing out yesterday and did the same solution.
One issue should be noted. The quality of the print is much worse since we are not using the correct print driver. Works fine for standard unimportant text printing, but really can't be used for printing photos.
Connect the printer directly to the computer USB and print a photograph using the real print driver, then connect wirelessly using the above method and print the same photo. The difference is dramatic.
It also seems to overuse black ink when hooked up through the Airport, and the printer light blinks for a while after printing is done.
Anyway, I plan on leaving it hooked up wirelessly for convenience sake, but when good quality is needed I will attach it directly to the USB port.
You can verify my findings and let others know if you find the same thing I found.
Good luck, and lets hope there are more compatible printers available in the future.

You are technically way ahead of me, so I can't argue with what you did.
How about an even simpler WiFi network consisting of only the AirPort connected by an Ethernet cable to the printer?  If the iPad still can't find the printer when connected to this network, then something is broken!
(Also try a different Ethernet cable.)

  • HP Photosmart c309a no longer printing and drivers not available

My HP Photosmart c309a printer which previously worked successfully printing wirelessly suddenly stopped longer working and showed as Offline  and the dirvers do not seem to be available for my Macbook Air. I have set the printer back to default settngs and reconfigured wireless and bluetooth. I have turned printer and laoptop on and off.  I then removed the printer from the list in Printers and scanners in System Preferences and then have tried to add it it back. The Photosmart shows as a device to be added but when I add it, I then get a message:
"Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
I have downloaded general HP Photosmart software from apple download site and that hasnt had any effect, and I have tried to download from HP site for C309a for mac http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03967522&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4159&product=373... but there is no download available directly (like there is for Windows). The  instructions take you to Printer & Scanners and Add printer, so same vicious circle as above. I have also tried adding the IP address for my printer but  get the same message.  After trying these various work arounds we can now prnt from daughters PC (after downloading drivers again from HP site)  and other daughters mac is now working  but i cant add my printer back to my selected prnters on mine. Hoping someone can help me very soon. Thanks Lisa

The radio may have failed.  Let's try a test:
Make sure the radio is enabled.  The blue Wi-Fi light should be on.
Turn off the Bluetooth radio.  The blue BT light should be off.
Press and release together the <setup> and <#> keys.  A diagnostic report will be generated.
At the top of the report is a section labeled [ USB Host ].  Tell me the RNDIS PID/VID values.
At the bottom of the report is a section labeled  Undirected Scan - Wireless Networks Found = X.  Tell me how many networks are detected, the names of the networks, the channel and the RSSI.  Also tell me which one is yours.
If the PID/VID in step #4 is N/C and there are no wireless networks found in step #5, then the radio may have failed.
One last check is to turn the printer off and unplug the power supply.  Then while pressing and holding the # the 6 keys, plug in the printer power.  Hold the keys for 10 seconds then release.
After the printer initializes, repeat the steps above and report back.

  • Scanning on a Photosmart C309a

I have a MacBook using OSX 10.9.5, connected via ethernet.  When I try to open the scanner it doesn't get past the "Waiting for Scanner" message. I have checked all connections, restarted the computer and shut down and restarted the printer.

    Hi @twiley ,
I see that you are getting the error message "Waiting for Scanner". The Mac is connected to the router by Ethernet. I would like to help.
Are you having this issue scanning from the Apple Software or are you trying to scan from the printer to the Mac?
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)
The drivers for 10.9 are installed by the Apple Updates.
If you have older HP Software still installed on the computer, uninstall it.
Check the driver name that is installed for the printer. Make sure it shows just the printer's name.
Click the Apple menu and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, highlight the printer name on the left side and on the right side of the screen it should show the printer's name. (Photosmart C309a)
If the full printer name isn't listed correctly, delete it and add the printer name back in from the list. Click the - sign to delete the driver and then click the + sign to add the driver, might have to click the drop down to select the printer's name to add it in.
I have provided a document for how to Scan from OS X v10.9 Mavericks Without HP Software for HP Multifunction Printers.
If you are trying to scan from the printer, try the steps in this document.

  • HP Aio photosmart C309a

I have used image capture to scan pictures from my scanner. HP software will not scan either. It prints fine by bluetooth even though I have a direct connection with a USB too. It does not recognize I have a USB connection for printer or scanner.
I have a Mac 10.6.8. All of the sudden after scanning in the past week, it says, No camera or scanner detected. I was connected with usb and bluetooth. I did everything to fix this, I checked my usb connection, I deleted the printer and added it back,(it would only recognize a bluetooth connection). I rebooted computer, and shut down printer, unplugged, waited, and plugged it back in, re-booted...  I repaired my dics permissions, and I checked for and attempted to install updated software.....and finally got this message.
Some components installed on your computer were developed for another version of HP utility. These components will not be loaded and some functionality related to your device will not be accessible. Please click HP support item on the toolbar to visit HP Online Support site and download the latest version of HP software.
I updated the software, and it still gives me the same message.
Now I have totally uninstalled the software, and will attempt to re-install and update. Need help, or ready to just buy another printer.
FYI - I bought this printwer about 4 years ago, it was messed up, so they sent me another one (the one I have now), and it has never worked right either.

    Hi nursnchg,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you cannot scan from your HP Photosmart c309a to your Mac OS X 10.6.8, either with a USB connection or bluetooth. I am happy to help you with this scanning issue!
So we can verify that the hardware works on the printer, what happens when you make a copy instead of a scan?
I know you have done some of these already, but I would recommend to try the following in this order:
Uninstall the software. Uninstalling the Printer Software
Reset the printing system. Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system.
Verify and repair disk permissions. Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions.
Re-install the software. HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.4, v10.5, and v10.6.
If that still doesn't work, I would also recommend trying to plug the USB cable into different ports on the Mac, as well as trying another USB 2.0 printer cable, in case there might be a problem with the cable itself.
Hope to hear from you soon!

  • Want to be able to scan w/ Photosmart C309a on wireless network

I want to add HP Solution Center to be able to scan documents from my laptop wirelessly.  I've loaded and installed all the latest HP software for the HP Photosmart C309a printer on to my new Toshiba laptop.  I have been able to print from Word and Adobe Reader, etc., wirelessly, but I cannot access the printer via the HP Solution Center to scan documents. I'm told the device installation is not complete.  So....
...When I attempt via "Add a Device Photosmart..."  the software detects the printer but each time, whether I try via ethernet (connected with cable) or wireless, after running the network diagnostics, it fails.  I've done this at least a dozen times.
Another laptop with the same software nearby is connected via wireless and works flawlessly.  The one I'm working on won't work.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I would try uninstalling, rebooting,  then reinstalling the printer software.  There should be an uninstall icon in the HP/printer folder in the programs group.
If you have other HP printer software installed that you are not using I would uninstall that as well.

  • Using a different wifi card in a Photosmart C309A

I'm one of the many people that has a Photosmart C309a that the wifi card died shortly after warranty.  I found a C309 at a recycle place and pulled the card (hey, they only charged me $5 for it).  The number on the card is 1150-7936, not 1150-7931 that has been said in the forums.  Do any techs think the 7936 will work??

***Note to those desparately searching for 1150-7931 cards:
I tried replacing the 1150-7931 with a 1150-7930. There are similar except for the jack (I assumed that the right angle jack is the "1" designation in the s/n)  I assumed wrong– it did not work.
good luck out there. Please post your info if you gain any.

  • Error message when trying to add a printer  -50?

I'm using an HP LaserJet 2100M, connected to my iMac G5 with a JetDirect 610 networking card through the ethernet port.
Usually it works, but now when I've tried to reset the printing preferences (often necessary to get it to work) and go to choose a printer, I get an error message: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer.....error -50."
I've tried restarting, and using the disk utility, but it says nothing needs to be repaired. Anybody have any suggestions? Do I have to reinstall, or will any updates help? I'm using 10.4.3

  • OSX 10.6.6  does not recognise Fax or CD printing on HP Photosmart C309a

I have just spent all day trying to get my new admin iMac at work to printCDs or scan using the attached HP Photosmart C309a Multifunction printer. I'm connected via USB.
The latest HP drivers from Apple have been installed, and the latest software for the printer from HP, including Photosmart studio app has also been installed. Permissions verified, printer reset etc.
The printer is communicating with the computer because we can print to paper, and utilities such as ink levels etc are clearly displayed on the iMac. The computer' finds' the printer so the physical communication is fine. When I try to scan or print to a blank CD, the computer says Cannot create a session in the scanner and (ii) your default printer cannot print directly to CD or DVD, even though this is one of the main functions of this combi printer !
Under OSX 10.5 we had no problem connecting to the printer and using all of it's functions. Now we have received a new iMac running Snow Leopard this isn't possible any more. I have been on to HP Technical support and they have talked me through a manual uninstall of the HP software and a re-install, which I have carefully carried out twice, both to no effect. Deeply frustrating !
I know that this is a software issue, but I'm damned if I know how to effect a solution to this problem.

    Hi Bruce
    Interesting, thanks.
I guess the obvious question is, where would I get UK drivers from ? Most of the website (hp.com) is Windows orientated. There were two upgrades for OSX listed for this printer, one C309a all-in-one and another for their photosmart studio app.
Apple have a generic HP printer upgrade specific for OSX 10.6. The advice from HP was to manually uninstall their software from the HD (they gave me a long list of things to delete). Why this was not undertaken by their enclosed 'uninstall app' beats me. Then verified and repaired permissions.
Then I was told to install the Apple upgrade. I did this and tried the scan function first, as instructed. This failed to open a scan session. However the printer scanned and printed manually OK.
I then rebooted and installed the HP upgrades and tried the scan again. Same result. The CD print function from the Photosmart Studio App produced an error "your default printer does not support direct printing to CD or DVD". If I used the Photosmart print App, I could get the CD to print but the size was wrong, even selecting CD 120mm as 'paper size'.
Clearly this is a software issue and someone would have spotted this in some sort of debugging test surely ? Anyone any suggestions ?

  • I've upgraded to Mavericks. HP Scan no longer works to scan images from an HP Photosmart c309a yet the printer works. My Mac does not recognise this scanner as a scanner, only as a printer. How do I get my applications such as Preview to use this scanner?

I've upgraded to Mavericks. Formerly HP Scan we used to establish communications with an HP Photosmart c309a all-in-one printer/scanner on my wi-fi network. As of the Dec 2013 update to Mevericks, it appears that HP Scan is now disabled and I cannot find this device as a scanner in System Preferences. I cannot connect to it in either Preview, Pages, or Photoshop Elements 8. Does anyone know a way of getting the OS to recognise this as a scanner?

How was the printer added? Using AirPrint or the HP ppd? Since Mavericks defaults to adding an AirPrint printer with the AirPrint ppd, it might be necessary to add it again with the HP ppd, after making sure you have the HP drivers installed.

I have been unable to add an HP Photosmart C4480 printer to my existing printer list using a USB connection. Software seems to be available and thought I had downloaded it, but doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Try deleting the printer, restarting, and trying software update again.

  • Photosmart C309a out of paper lock up problem

    System: Windows7 - 64 bit OS
Photosmart C309a printer is locked in an “out of paper” mode even when there’s paper in the tray.
Events leading up to the lock:
    1-Printed a document without a problem.
2-Started to print a second document. Paper feed started, then stopped and the “out of paper” message came up. Checked tray and the sheet that was partially fed was the last sheet in the tray. Hit “ok” button and the partially fed page came out, but the indicator light was still on and paper was in the tray.
3- So I loaded more paper in the tray. The indicator did not go out. Tried to print again and could not. Then I cleared the print queue.
4-Went to the setup mode and successfully printed a printer report. Paper fed fine. Report was printed fine.
5-Tried to print my document again but could not – indicator still says out of paper.
6-Reset the printer: With printer on, unplugged the power plug from the printer, then unplugged the power supply from the power source, waited 30 seconds, re-plugged the power supply plug into the power source, then re-plugged the power plug into the printer. The status did not change. Successfully printed another print report. Repeated this step two more times.
Question: How do I fix this problem?

Hello @bscull, welcome to the forums!
I understand your Photosmart Premium C309a model is showing you an "Out of Paper" error when printing on envelopes. My suggestions to you, would be to follow the steps in the link below, if the option is within your printing program, choose to feed the envelope in a different way, and also try printing them from another program altogether.

  • Photosmart c309a- 'The wireless radio is not functioning, contact HP support'

My Photosmart c309a wont connect wirelessly. Upon running the wireless network test, the report states, and I quote "The wireless radio is not functioning. Contact HP support". The report then states the following:
    Wireless on                    PASS
    Wireless working         FAIL
and everything following that stated as 'not run'.
Ive searched for other threads on the subject, and the only sloutions I can find are unplug the printer and plug it back in to reset it (made no difference), and try the HP print and san doctor (link was dead, found it manually and didnt work as it cant connect to or even see the printer on the network).
So the question is, is this a hardware fault, and if so what can be done about it?

    Hello,
Yes, it is an hardware issue and indicates that the Wireless card is not functional.
Please call HP Tech Support for further assistance.
