Trying to apply a "target" as _blank (I think?)

Question

I am creating a simple set of pages and I want to have three links open new browser windows but leave the main page as is.
These links I did the following:
highlighted the link
used the inspector to link to a new page I created
in the behavoirs I added "open browser window" with size restrictions I want to have in place
In the "target" drop down I have tried _blank and also just an empty field.
What happens is this.
When I upload the page and click on the link, a new browser window opens, it is the correct size, but the main page also loads the linked page. I would like the main page to stay the same.
I am a relative html knuclehead, I tried looking for an answer, but I think I am doing almost everything correctly?
If it matters, the page was created from a bulit in Dreamweaver page design General-> Page Designs (CSS) -> Two-Column Left Nav

Thanks for the advice, but I am now making things worse. I was not sure where to place the "a href="javascript:void(0)" code and the frist post did not offer any solutions.
