Trying to burn 2 1/2 hr DVD......Do I need dual layer or different compress

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to burn a two and a half hour DVD using compressor from FCP 4.0 Just one of the 1 hour tracks kicks me over the 4.7 gb limit in DVD SP. Is ther any other way to get this video on a normal DVD or do I need to get a dual layer burner?

Well, there is as little glitch in FCP that you might have to work around to get AC3 audio, but here's what I'd do:
When you export from FCP via Compressor select two presets, one for the MPEG-2 video and the other for Dolby audio. You'll get two files when Compressor is done, and one of them is an AC3 file with stereo audio, nice and compact.
However going this rout directly from FCP may require that you use the AIFF audio preset in Compressor to get audio that will actually work in DVDSP. You can then run the AIFF file (much bigger) back through compressor to get AC3 and that will work just fine.
Alternately, someone else here said that if you export from FCP to QuickTime movie and then use that file in Compressor the AC3 file works just fine in DVDSP. either way there is an extra step so flip a coin.
Anyway, yes you have to export audio and video from FCP through Compressor using separate presets, though now with Compressor 2.1 they are all right there in the same folder for 90 minute, 120 minute, etc.
Good luck!

You will get better results if you use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and then drag the movie from the Movies pane of the Media Browser in iDVD onto the menu window.
Also I suggest you use this workflow which I learned from Bengt:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • I'm trying to burn a Iphoto slideshow to DVD but the "burn" in the menu isn't active?

I'm trying to burn a slideshow to a DVD but it isn't hightlighted in the menu?  Any ideas.  Also, is there a way to put captions under a photo that show up in the slide show?
    Thanks,
    Michael Quinn

To burn a Slideshow you DVD for viewing on a domestic DVD player you need to use an app that with author the disk to the correct format.
Macs used come with iDVD for this purpose - accessed by going Share -> iDVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have this then you need to get such an app, then export the slideshow from iPhoto. This will make a movie of it, then add it to your DVD project.

    a. Is this a :"it worked before but not now" issue or "it never worked before" issue?
    b. If you did a burn to folder (4.7 GB) for your DVD-VIDEO, does that go to a successful completion?
Looking forward to your follow up.

  • I am trying to burn a slideshow onto a dvd that will play on a standard dvd player and tv, but everytime I copy it I cannot play the disc except on my Macbook

I am trying to burn a slideshow onto a dvd that will play on a standard dvd and tv

You can't just copy the slideshow to a DVD as, you've found out, that won't play on a TV. You need to use a program that will render it into DVD format, complete with the proper lead in and trailers. I use Toast to do that, however, there are other programs that can do that too.

  • I am trying to burn videos to blu-ray DVD

Hi, I am trying to burn videos to blu-ray DVD, but unfortunately Encore is no longer available.  How do I burn DVDs with the software currently available, which software do you recommend, and is there a link to show me how to use the software?  Thanks a lot!

You need Encore CS6 which is bundled with Premiere Pro CS6.
There is no Encore CC so you must install Premiere Pro CS6 in order to get Encore CS6.

My project is 1 hour & :22 mintues. Do they make Verbatim discs that can handle that? OR do I have to put it on two disks?

Hi, only just come onto this site to check a few problems I am having. Noticed that you are having trouble at stores of getting certain discs.

  • Always over size when trying to burn media to CD or DVD discs

Why has my DU suddenly decided to block me from burning anything to CD or DVD?
I keep getting a message that I'm trying to burn information over the target disc size when it's well under.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Regards - Deano

BTW This is only when burning from a disk Image created within DU.
I haven't tried just inserting the disk dragging files and right clicking "Burn".
I've had no problems previously with the normal (Disk Image) method, I'm really panicking because I want to back up my latest work (that is already backed up to an external ... but you can't be too careful)
Once again, any advice much appreciated.

  • Trying to burn Full HD Videos on DVD

    Hi all,

This thread was written back in 2009 and related to Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 which did not offer Share/Disc/AVCHD. You have version 10 (apparently on Windows 8.1 64 bit) that does offer Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD with the disc choice, so why not use it with the burn preset of H.264 1920 x 1080i NTSC Dolby not 1440 x 1080i NTSC Dolby? You can use a DVD 4.7 GB/120 minutes disc or, if need be, a DVD double layer single sided disc 8.5 GB/240 min. And, you can have menus. Like Blu-ray, the stop markers do not work in the playback of AVCHD DVD. Pay close attention to the burn dialog's Quality area Space Required and Bitrate, watching for any significant drop in bitrate from the max of about 15.49 Mbps when using the option "Fit Content to Available Space" That is your signal that enough is enough.
    Please remind me, are you using source video of 1920 x 1080 16:9  or 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9...both end up with a display of 1920 x 1080....
    a. The project preset should match the properties of the source media. So, for 1920 x 1080 source, you select a 1920 x 1080 project preset. And, if you are using a 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9, you use a 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16;9 project preset.
    b. However, when it comes to Share/Computer/ or Share/Disc/AVCHD, you should be using one of the export presets described for 1920 x 1080, not 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9. That was true in 2009 as well as in 2015. This works to avoid any possible dependency on the player recognition of the 1440 x 1080 file's 16:9 flag which is need to stretch the 1440 x 1080 to 1920 x 1080 for display after encoding.
    You wrote
When I used the Share/Disc/DVD the resulting video was pixelated when played back through a blu-ray player to an HD TV.  I am mass producing copies of the video and am only offering a DVD version at this time.
Did you really mean Share/Disc/DVD? Did you actually ever try for Share/Disc/AVCHD with the disc choice?
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • IDVD refuses to burn lengthy video even though it's set to dual-layer DVD.

*"Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn this project, remove some content."*
    Project:
*- total project duration: 164:10 minutes*
*- total project capacity: 5.208 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)*
    Menus:
*- number of menus in project: 2 menus*
*- total menu duration: 1:10 minutes*
*- total menu capacity: 54.240 MB*
    Movies:
*- total movies duration: 163:00 minutes*
*- total movies capacity: 5.155 GB*
This should fit quite snug on a dual-layer DVD, which I've gone to the preferences and changed to do so. It won't even let me make a disc image.

What encoding mode / bit rate is it set at?
I strongly suggest not exceeding 120 mins. (2 hours) max unless you opt to use a 3rd party app like Roxio Toast's Fit to DVD option.

  • Problems Burning DVD's (Single and Dual Layer) with FCPX

I have been burning the same size and length DVD's every week on single layer DVD's and since the update I can no longer do it.
FCPX was great for the inexperienced user, Apple what have you done !!!!!
Because it now asks for a dual layer DVD I went out and bought (expensive) them and they won't burn either, it keeps coming up with an error message prior to completing.
I went through five of the dual layers and all had the same problem.
I need the program to be easy, it was and now its not.
Will there be a fix or how do I go back to the version prior to the update.

Is Share>DVD  the only export option giving you trouble? Will it let you create a single layer disk image?
If sharing works otherwise, export a master file. Bring that into Compressor and choose the DVD preset. In the Inspector>Encoder>Quality you should be able to adjust the bit rate down to where it will ft on a single-sided disk.( As you adjust te slider, the "Allows" message at the very bottom of the Quality tab will change. Be conservative and allow a cushion.)

  • Maximizing HD Video with iDVD/DVD Studio Pro and dual layer DVD

I have 30 minutes of edited home video from iMovie HD and I am trying to use iDVD to burn the project. I have a dual layer DVD+ disk and would like to maximize the quality of the project to 8 gigs. Each time I change the project info, etc. the project still is just 1 gig. Any suggestions, please....

iDVD produces NTSC/PAL videoDVDs within the specs given by the socalled Red Book Standards...- max bitrate is 8 - 9kB/sec... which is, in your case 30min=1GB
(but: iDVD "wastes" a lot of bandwidth for PCM audio....)
DVDSP/Compressor allows a manual setting of bitrates, so you can devide the max. rate wiser between audio and video... but some dvdplayers (esp. software ones in the PC world) don't handle such high bitrates...
as said above, no homebrewn HiDef DVD so far, lets see, what 10.5 and the new ProMacs will bring to us....

  • DVD R replacement with dual layer

I've read there are some problems trying to replace the super drive in a dual 2.o G5 with a Dual Layer drive.
    Anyone have experience with this?
    Rick

    Anyone have experience with this?
    Yup. I've done three.
    I used the Pioneer 110A DL-Superdrive ($70 at fastmac.com).
Beforehand, download some drivers from "Patchburn" appropriate to your OS version (http://www.patchburn.de), and install them.
Then swap out the drives. Simple. Your Apple manual that came with the G5 has EXCELLENT instructions on removing/installing the optical drive.
Check the ID jumper config on the rear of the new drive to make sure it matches the old one. It's probably "drive select" which is no jumper installed, but check it anyway to be sure.
After installation, boot the Mac. Install the Patchburn drivers. Restart. Rebuild permissions (THIS IS IMPORTANT!!).
    Test the drive.
    Say 'Wow! That was easy."
Only problems I've had was a DOA drive that simply wouldn't read or write anything. Replaced it with a new one and all was well.
BTW - with regard to existing SL SuperDrive, due to circumstance I ended up using my new DL drive in an external FireWire box the first time I hooked it up.
It worked so well that I left it external and kept the old 105 SL-SuperDrive as the internal. Now I can burn two DVD's at one time (after duplicating my copy of Toast 7, of course).
So if you have an old, dead external hard drive in a box (or Jaz, or Syquest, or tape drive - anything with a working fan and power supply) you can buy a FireWire bridge board from Granite Digital and put your new drive (or your old one) in that external box.
Personally, I like having the two opticals.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions. If you need details about sourcing these components I've mentioned, please send me an e-mail and I'll send you the info.

  • Recordable space on DVD-R vs. Dual-Layer DVD+R

I have the PB 17" 1.67GHz Nov 2005 model with the DVD dual-layer burning drive.
I bought a 15 pack Memorex DVD+R DL recordable 2.4x, 8.5GB, 240min video to experiment some with this media.
On many of my DVD-R Single-Layer discs I can record data up to around 4.3 GB at a pinch. I notice that the DVD+R Dual-Layer disc will only record data up to around just under 8GB using Toast Titanium v7.0.2 in each case. Is this to be expected ? I was hoping for much closer to 8.3 GB. If the 8GB is all I can expect what is the 0.5 GB being held back for and what is this user-unusable spaced used for ?
