Trying to burn movie in iMovie...what do I do??

I have almost created a movie using iMovie, now what do I do to get onto my DVD??
And...can I insert a photo slideshow in the middle of my movie?  How?

There is no edequate substitute for iDVD, it's just that Apple have decided to withdraw it.
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced.
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that.

  • I feel I must move beyond iMovie, what program should I use ?

I have been happily using iMovie and iDVD from versions 1 through 6.  iMovie 08 was so bad that Apple made iMovie 06 available as a free download for buyers of iMovie 08. The newer iMovies were better, but they seemed “dumbed down” (even for me).  Now, I am shocked and horrified to learn that the latest iMovie does not even set chapter markers!
So, I have continued to use iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (they seem to work fine under OS 10.9.4).   iMovie 06 is now 8 years old!  I feel compelled to move forward. A lot of my work is DV.    In the past, most of my source material came out of S-Video.   I used a Canopus ADVC300 analog-to-digital converter that gave good results.   Going forward, I will have more video utilizing Component Video, or HDMI.
I am looking into 2 possibilities,  Adobe Premiere elements 12, or.........Final Cut Pro X.
The final result of my work is almost always a DVD.   It is hard for me to move from iMovie and iDVD.  I never read the manuals for either program, yet,  I was able to produce DVDs with nice menus and overall quality close to Hollywood.
It looks like Final Cut Pro X 'can' make a DVD directly without other software.  However, from what I have seen on YouTube the result is primitive compared to what iDVD was doing 10 years ago.
Adobe Premiere elements 12 can make nice DVDs and Blu-ray's directly.  I have no problem with using a separate program to make DVDs but I haven't got a clue how to do that with Final Cut Pro X.   I suppose I can still use iDVD, but now I'm back to using discontinued software.
I do not need any of the high-powered affects capability that Final Cut Pro X  possesses.  My “movie-making” is mostly confined to simple editing (the old iMovie 06 did all I needed).
Frankly, one motivation for choosing Final Cut Pro X, is the excellent, compassionate and understanding support that the kind people on this very forum provide.  So, what program should I use?

to turn perspective for a second by 180°:
Why do you want to switch to a new editor anyhow?
    • iM-a never did discs - that was iDVDs job = no big change in your workflow
    • iDVD is still working, and aside obsolete, complex and $$$$ DVDSP (part of obsolete FC/p) or Encore (part of Adobes CC rent package) your only option left to create disks on MacOS is indeed iDVD (...ok, there's Toast and Burn and some weird 'shareware'-stuff...)..
    • iMovie-b supports the new HDef formats (AVCHD) - you mentioned converters and DVDs = no HDef in use, in your habitat, correct?
    • if you don't need FCPX' bling-bling (I can't imagine that ) - why not using FCPX-lite = iMovie? 15$ ...
    • chapters could be done in iDVD - just to mention that ............
    • AP and FCPX are following very different concepts in usage - my personal preference is 200% on FCPX, … I was one of the loudest nay-sayers, when iM08 araised, meanwhile, FCPX is my dream!! AP (tested it) is way too complex, crowded, 'optionalized' and did I mention 'complex' for me. A bit like Windows vs. MacOS: 'everything goes' (incl. getting lost) vs. 'convenience' (incl. restrictions) ... After 2y of practice, I'm editing my weekly hobby-projects with 6-cam-Multicam, incl. tons of  custom graphics, slow-mow, effects (soccer games) in less than 2h ... awesome!
    summary:
    • why switching?
    • use iMovie10 + iDVD
    • Premiere (or Premiere Elements!) and FCPX are both avail as fee trial ... test  it - but you need iDVD anyhow
    • 'disks'  is a dwindling niché, for years!- consider to switch to 'other' distribution options
... what are 'chapters' anyhow??... (kid din'!)

  • Trying to stream movies on tv - What Verizon speed do I need?

Currently have Brighthouse Lightning.  When I try to stream tv shows, they are blurry and service very slow.  I was told by the company I bought the box from that this is due to low speed.
Brighthouse rep came and gave me new modem.  Speed is about 60 download and 12 upload on computer.  Brighthouse level 3 tech also adjusted settings on their end.
Wonder if I should switch to Verizon to be able to stream movies more efficiently?
    Thanks

    Dpends on several things:
    Biggest is:
How many simultaneous users will be connected to your Internet at once?
If it is just you only streaming one at a time, 25M should be fine.
If you add more people and/or more streams, then you need to upgrade accordingly.

  • Trying to publish movie and get error message -50

trying to publish movies from imovies.  I keep getting error messages (-50) or (-34). don't know what it means.  also when I put in a dvd to burn it tells me "not enough space". Movies are less than an hour.  why?  I recently was able to burn one for 1hour and 3 min now I can't burn anything?  confused...help

The not enough space message refers to file size. Even though the movie may be short, perhaps for some reason it has a large file size.

  • 40minute movie shared on PC theater, How do you burn movie in theater to dvd?

I have created a movie in imovie and sent to theater, since the movie is longer then 15 minutes, it was sent to MAC only and not icloud which is fine. Where on the MAC is the movie clip created stored? i would like to make a copy of it to external hard drive? I was also looking for a method to burn the new movie to a DVD or dual layer DVD. I am running  yosemite on my MAC and the latest imovie. I have a copy of iDVD from an earlier version of operating system but last time i tried to export movie from imovie as file and drag into iDVD, it wasnt compatible. It seems Apple is wondering away from DVDs and more into the cloud service. I would bring my laptop to relatives house but this macbook pro 2009, doesnt support sharing with appleTV, thanks apple for supporting older machines. I would need cables for video and voice to view on a TV. Making a copy to a DVD would be allot easier.
Can anyone advise of my two concerns? Where the movie is saved to for me to make a backup to an external drive and the latest method to burn projects to DVD???
Currently i have all events on my external drive, iphoto and imovie events used to make the project. When i created the movie to the theater it created the project to my local MAC HD, that is what i am looking for to be able to copy over to my external hard drive as well. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

You should be able to bring the movie project into iDVD and burn it from there. I burned one from iMovie one time that was 45 minutes. Your project can be found in Finder > Movies > iMovie Projects

ive already tried simply exporting it to Quick Time, and burned it to a dvd, but when i watched it... the sound was wrong and people's words were like muted...
what do i do?!?! i don't know where or how to get idvd!
    help!!!

    Hi
There are two structures of DVDs
    • Data-DVD - as burned from DeskTop/Finder
    • Video-DVD - to be played on a DVD-Player - Needs a program that can do this
One can in iMovie - Export as QuickTime .mov and save this via DeskTop/Finder onto a DVD - BUT this will only play on a Computer and if it is a Window-PC this needs to download QT-player or VLC-player.
But no DVD-player for TV can play back this.
To get a Video-DVD then You need
    • iDVD (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • DVD Studio Pro (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • FinalCut Pro-X (can do simple Video-DVDs) - or -
    • Burn - http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html - FREE - but very PLAIN - no fancy things at all.
    • Roxio Toast™ 11 Pro - Fairly advanced - and costs a bit - still very Good and lot's of great tool's included. (I love it) - Can also back convert home made DVDs to an editable mode in an OK quality. With BD-component also capable to do sort of Blu-Ray DVDs.

It generally means that the media is faulty or of poor quality. Most of us here use Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden media.

    Thanks for your reply:
I did find an error log related to the error code and tried all suggestions on the list of recommendations, still no luck
I definitely am running OS X10.5.8 (hopefully will be updating later on this month)
I tried several brand new discs from the same box, still no luck.
My last option is to go out and try a different brand, guess I'll go with Verbatim this time but I think I'll poke around some more before buying 20 more new discs.

iDVD is no longer supported by Apple and does not come pre-loaded on new Macs.
If your computer did not come with iDVD and iWeb preinstalled, you can ask Apple for a free copy here:
       http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
Alternatively, you can purchase a boxed version of iLife '11 from Apple, Amazone, etc. Boxed versions come with iDVD and iWeb still on the disk.

    Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.

    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.
    One user more writes
To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
    • On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

Chuck, Chicago.

e.g. external USB/USB2 hard disks, other FW hard disks etc.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
