Trying to buy a Wireless Router

I'm looking around for a wireless router for my powerbook and the spec sheets of every router I look at seems to say that it will only work with PC's.
Wanted to get the Linksys WRTG54GS but got a little worried when there was nothing about Mac compatibility. I've never had compatibility issues with wireless internet on my powerbook, but the router doesn't specify it'll work with Macs.
Can someone let me know if this one will get the job done?

Renato, First, Welcome to the discusiions..
The technology is the same for either..Pc or MAC..the main dfference is Mac offers Airport, which is no more than there name for wireless technology..
and there Airport and Airport Extreme technology and software will automatically recognise wireless service and enable you to use it with a minimum of work to configure...
Pc wireless often will need to be manually configured.with IP addresses and subnet masks etc. Apples software is far superior to PC when it comes to wireless..
A, Wireless Router, no matter the manufacture, do basicly the same thing..The main difference is $$$$$cost.
Airport Extreme does offer a built in USB port on the back that allows for wireless printing..
You will also find that NONE of the major manufactures say much about MAC..the reason is MAC only has 10% of the market compared to 90% PC that is the reason several of us choose to use all MAC products because we know they work with a minimum of hassel trying to fiqure out how to make it work on a MAC...Good Luck...Don

Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme and error says Ethernet Unplugged.

So, AirPort Utility running on the Windows Vista desktop can "see" the AirPort Extreme and displays its icon, but gives that error message at some point in the setup process? How far does it get?
Other questions that may help me (or somebody else) understand your problem better:
Which of the pieces were verified as working before the introduction of the AirPort Extreme?
Did you have the desktop computer attached to the Verizon GT704WGB with one of the Ethernet cables you are now trying to use? Which one? Have you tried the other one to be sure it also works?
Are you using the same port on the GT704WGB? Have you tried another one?
If the desktop has multiple ethernet ports, are you using the same one?
Had you done any special configuration of the ethernet port on the Verizon GT704WGB to get it to work with your desktop?
What category ethernet cable are you using? 3? 5? 5e? 6?

  • Trying to add a Wireless router as a switch on an existing Wired network

    Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble with my WRT54GS v.2.0
I'm trying to add wireless access to my existing network here at work. I think the main network is using Dlink 40+ node switches.
I've been reading around and I've tried to turn off DHCP on the router, but when my computer tries to find a connection, it times out. I'm not even trying to get the wireless to work, just LAN for now.
The router will get an ip address assigned by the main network, so it's connected, but I can't get the computer through to the main network.
Is there anything I need to be setting up on the computer? Can this even be done?
    Thanks,
    Alex

please make sure that you dont use the internet port on the router, use the local ports...(1,2,3,4)

  • Trying to connect a wireless router to a switch

We have an 8 port router in the closet(linksys) with the cable connection and in our main room we have a five port 10/100 (By linksys) switch that connects to the system just fine all hardwired, and we have internet already working off of that.
We tried to connect the WRT54G wireless router to the switch because we asked at the store and they said if we had a switch already that's what we'd want. I changed the ip address on the new router to the 192.168.2.1, saved the settings and then tried to plug it into the switch. As soon as we plugged into the switch, anything else connected to the switch stopped getting internet. I also tried to just leave it at the default and same problem. I tried the 'change the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and disable DHCP server and then going into advanced and changing gateway to router and again, same problem. Regardless of what I do anytime I plug that wireless into the switch everything on the switch stops working.
How would we get both the switch and the router to work?

I assume that you want your wireless and your wired computers to all share the same network, and all connect to the Internet through your 8 port router in the closet.  And the 8 port router uses the 192.168.1.x  address space.  ---  is that all correct?
If so, disconnect the WRT54G from the rest of your network, then using a computer wired to the WRT54G, do the following:
    a)  set the "Local IP address"  (not the "Internet Connection Type"  address)  to 192.168.1.2    I am assuming that you are not using this fixed adddress elsewhere in your network.
    b) Leave the DHCP server set to "disabled".
    c) Wire any port from your 8 port router or switch, to any numbered port on the WRT54G.  Do not connect anything to the "Internet" port on the WRT54G.
Note that with this setup, your 8 port router will control your router settings (port forwarding, DHCP server, firewall, etc.).  Your WRT54G will only contol your wireless settings.
If you need more help, please state the model of your 8 port router and switch.

  • Tried to update WRT54G wireless router, upgrade failed, router broken.

I tried to upgrade my new WRT54G wireless router with the new firmware. I got an error message that said "Upgrade are failed". I used the correct version of the firmware for my router (I have a Ver 8). I tried to factory reset, but the router is still broken. Any suggestions on what I could do? The entire page I access via IP is broken. All the text is messed up the the links don't work. I can use the router to access my network, but it will not connect to the Internet at all.

I have no firewalls, and it's for sure not a computer related problem. I have tried on three seperate computers. The upgrade failed, it won't let me access the setup page. I have tried to go onto the Internet since, and it lets me, but 80 percent of all Internet sites don't work. This is what shows up in the router firmware page when I go thru the IP. ýýý†††···ÇÇǶ¶¶¼¼¼öööiiiSSS¿¿¿ÂÂÂßßßààà´´´¯¯¯***^^^uuuAAAllØhhÐééé²²²äää–––ÃÃÃBBBâââmmm¾¾¾DDDWWW˜˜˜“““ìììÎÎÎ LLLaaajjÓyyy ¸¸¸ÝÝÝøøøÉÉÉãããÞÞÞ:::×××ÓÓÓkkk’’’nnn™™™³³³©©©ççç œœœxxx~~~ÁÁÁffÍ```ggÍ CCCiiБ‘‘ ŠŠŠ@@@žžž YYYµµµÐÐЪªª¥¥¥??9èèè___ÆÆƉ‰‰ÜÜÜšššÒÒÒ¨¨¨¡¡¡vvváááØØØÙÙÙƒƒƒTTT$$$ÍÍÍŒŒŒÚÚÚÔÔÔ••• ËËËÅÅÅëë뺺º‚‚‚°°°|||}}}jjÕVVV„„„\\\]]]rrrbbÅ??;ŸŸŸ[[¶»»»[[[%%IGGG???eeË£££íí퇇‡fffooÝOO __¾kkÕGGŽ``Á88oddÇKK•CC†hhÏîîî±±±>>|SS¦77mÛÛÛæææpppÖÖÖ®®®ÈÈÈHH êêê??)ÌÌÌÊÊÊÄÄÄ????:llÙZZ²ŽŽŽWW®99q;;vAA‚ÿÿÿffÌ Message The rest of the pages in the setup menu ether show up blank, or give the same message as above.

  • Need to buy a wireless router that is compatible with 10.4.11 and macbook pro, and pc. Current Airport Extreme not a compatible option. Please help with suggestions.

Any mid range options would be helpful. Thank your.

You can set up and administer the Airport Extreme from any computer, Mac or PC. The only requirement is the version of Airport Utility appropriate for the OS, in order to accomplish its initial configuration. For Tiger, it's the one I linked.
Apparently the "chat" participant simply read from Apple's web page. Anyone can do that
Client operating systems are meaningless to the Airport itself (or any other wireless router).
Linksys made fine products before Cisco bought them. Cisco is focused on large corporate deployments, not small users - abandonment of the Flip is evidence of that. Their individual consumer support is horrible.

  • Trying to configure WRT54GL Wireless Router

I am new to networking and just purchased a WRT54GL V1.1 to allow wireless networking with my laptop. I am trying to configure the router with my desktop. I have Windows XP Pro and an Earthlink DSL modem (Zy-XEL P-600 Series).  The setup CD stopped at the "Confirm New Settings" screen saying "The router is not available to connect to the internet." I have tried resetting and recycling power on the router and modem. Support from Linksys has been poor due to the earthquake.  Any help is appreciated.

There can be issues when going from a direct DSL connection to a router -> DSL setup.  The original direct DSL connection setup routine often configures your computer to interact with the DSL modem, providing the username and password to your ISP to allow a connection.  With a router, that now must provide the user name/password through the PPPoE configuration setup within the router.
I've seen cases where I had to run Microsoft's Windows XP Network Fix utility on the computer to get the TCP/IP stack working properly again.

  • Can I use my iMac G5 as a wireless router?

I apologise if this is a dumb question, as it probably is, but I thought I'd give it a go... I've also searched the forum and have not found any other posts on this question, so it is more than likely far out..
I have a iMac G5 that is connected straight through to broadband. I'm thinking of buying a laptop as i need Windows IE for work and, sad as it is to admit, I find Safari doesn't work properly on the website I ahve to do the admin for. If both computers are WiFi is there a way of networking the 2 computers and accessing the internet from the Laptop without buying a wireless router? Would bluetooth be a solution?
Any help you can provide will be much appreciated
    Cheers
    Manuel

Should be no problem using one machine as an access point for another. Of course, the first Mac must be continuously awake for this to happen, internet/file sharing must be turned on.
Have a look at THIS forum's thread.

  • Connecitng a 2nd wireless router to my verizon router?

    Hi,
I am trying to connect linksys wireless router to my newly installed Fios router.  I have the radio off on the Fios router.  On the linksys router, i can get a DHCP address from the Fios router of 192.168.1.152... so i know they see each other to some point.  However, my laptop that is connected to the linksys router cannot get to the internet.  I figure i'm just missing a check box or something simple, but so far, i cant' find it.
I know i haven't put alot of info in, but i'll answer any questions to get me up and running.  Thanks ahead of time.

I have run both configurations. At first i set up my Belkin for a subnet but eventually turned off dhcp to run as a bridge so that my pc can connect to the stb for media manager.

I guess the real question is how you have the linksys wired. If you plugged it in using the wan port to the Fios router then it will only work as a subnet. If you plug it in lan to lan you shoud be able to dhcp through as a bridge. In this configuration, you can leave dhcp on for the linksys wireless radio but you have to set up a scope that is excluded in the Fios router.

  • Can't create a new password in WRT54GS wireless router

I'm trying to configure my Wireless router WRT54GS and i'm facing troubles with the passwords. When I insert a new password and the user name and password of my DSL ISP, the program accept it, gives me a message that says that the changes were made with success, but when it returns to the configuration screen, there are 15 black dots in the password field and, of course, I don't get a connection.(My passord has only 7 positions.) I've done all that I know to fix it, but the problems always come back. I've pressed the reset button already too. Many times. Someone would help me? Wlademir Mendes Brazil

well....the elongated password is not a worry .. as the password you enter is encrypted by the router .. therefore a long password
did you try entering the username as the complete email add like [email protected] ??
also, ensure that the DSL modem in in bridge mode ...

  • Secure wireless router with lost password

I'm trying to secure our wireless router and not having any success. When I go to the 192.168.1.1 site and type in admin, the screen just pops up again. If I continue, after three tries I get a 404 screen. I'm guessing my husband added a password at some time, but he has no record of it and I've tried all of our passwords that I can think of and none of them work. Is there a way to get past this screen or recover the password somehow? Our network still shows up as unlocked and I'd like to get access to the account and get it locked. Thanks.

    Welcome to Cisco Home Community,
What is the model number of your Linksys router? In this case, you may need to perform a reset on the router and you will lose all settings saved in it. You'll start from scratch of setting it up again for the internet both wired and wireless to work. Here are the links below that you may help you to get this issue resolve.

  • Connect to Internet Without Airport Base Station or Other Wireless Router

I have an iMac G5 w/Airport Extreme card, an eMac w/Airport card (not Extreme), and an iBook w/Airport card (not extreme). The iMac is connected to the internet via DSL (direct Ethernet connection - no router). I can succesfully network all three computers for file sharing but can not connect to the internet over the network using the eMac or the iBook. Is it even possible to use the iMac as a wireless base station for the other two computers or do I have to buy a wireless router or Airport Base Station?
    Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   eMac 10.3.9, iBook 10.3.9

no1bass, Welcome to the discussion area!
The best solution is to get an inexpensive wireless base station.
However, you can use the iMac to share the Internet connection. Go to the iMac's Sharing preference pane and enable Internet Sharing. If you have the iMac's firewall enabled, you will need to also enable Web Sharing or otherwise configure the firewall to open the correct ports.

  • Using Wireless Router instead of Ethernet Bridge?

I have read through some threads here about using an ethernet bridge to add wireless connectivity to an old Bondi blue 233. I am interested in looking into this. But I recently ran across some information stating that it is cheaper to just buy another wireless router and hook this up to the Bondi and use this setup to "join an existing network". Has anyone done this? What are the pros and cons? Thanks.
    Steve M.

There are only a few devices that have multiple uses. I use a DLink DWL G703AP on my daughter's iMac for wireless connectivity. If you look it up on the DLink site you can see its capabilities. I am sure there are other devices with similar capabilities.
