Trying to choose a gaming imac configuration--on a budget

I'm looking to get a gaming imac, and I'm on a budget. I enjoy RTS games, as well as Diablo-esque games, etc., but not shooters, and was thinking about going the bootcamp route. Initially, I thought about the 20" intel double core with 2 gb and 256 mb ATI video card, but it was a little too pricey for me, all told.
So my question is this, which do you think has a bigger impact on gaming performance, 1 gb vs 2 gb memory, or a 128 vs 256 video card?
And is there a substantial difference between these three configurations: 17" 1 Gb and 128 ATI, 17" 2 Gb and 128 ATI, or 20" 1 Gb and 256 ATI?
Thanks!

I dont know if Apple is the way you want to go if you want to do intense gaming currently. EA and Blizzard are however, moving games into the Apple realm now with Starcraft 2, Starcraft, World of Warcraft, (Diablo maybe, I dont remember). I can tell you now, that when later games will be coming out (even within this year), theres going to be a HUGE jump in system requirements, especially for games like SC2. The 256 vid card will be noticably faster and capable of handling more compared to the 128. As for memory, I like ot think of it as ram in a car, the amount of load it is capable of pulling without slowing effects. So, it would depend on the game. Something like Diablo and Starcraft/Brood War aren't too ram hungry, but when you go into the full on 3D, hardcore physics games, you will feel the need for it. There are a few things you should consider though before buying one. First, there are rumours that the iMac will undergo updates following the MacBook Pro hardware updates. This means, faster, stronger, more up-to-date stuff like Vid Cards may become available soon enough, if i recall correctly, they assumed anywhere from this month to october for it to happen. The rumours also state that the 17 inch iMac will be given up and will only be left with the other 20inch and up models. This will reduce the cost of the 20 inch. Also, memory can definitly be bought aftermarket to save you a lot of money. Of course it may not be the same speed settings as the memory sold with macs, but it can definitly save you $$. I got two 1G sticks for a total of 130$ canadian. which is about 50% differant than Apple's. If I had total absolute power over your buying descision (which I obviously dont :P) I would either go PC or simply wait to see if the iMac updates will occur. Both methods theoretically should save money. ^^

Not sure about Utilities on your iPad. Do you mean the Settings app?
First thing to try is a reboot of your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appear. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • I have just purchased a 5S iphone, when I tried to sync with my Imac it comes up with "...requires iTunes version 11.1 or later.." my iTunes version is 10.6.3, I rechecked software updates but says there is no updates required. help

I have just purchased a 5S iphone, when I tried to sync with my Imac it comes up with "...requires iTunes version 11.1 or later.." my iTunes version is 10.6.3, I rechecked software updates but says there is no updates required??? I checked when last auto update was done which was 01/07/12 I also tried downloading from web iTunes version 11.1.5 but it wont load because I don't have min version 10.6.8. What can I do to sort this out? Note: I am a not computer savy so be easy on me.

If your computer is running an OS X prior to Snow Leopard 10.6,
the answer (if it is an Intel-based Mac; not old PowerPC model)
would be to buy the retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD from Apple
for about $20, and install it. Then update that to 10.6.8 by using
the installed Snow Leopard online to get Combo Update v1.1 for
Snow Leopard 10.6.8. After that is installed & updated, run the
system's Software Update again, to see what else is available to
    that system.
Later systems can then be looked into at Mac App Store, once
the computer is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
And if your computer is a Power PC (G4/G5, etc) and has no
Core2Duo kind of CPU -- See "About this Mac" in apple menu
to disclose the general info about your Mac. Also you can see
even more by clicking on "More Info" when looking in there...
If it isn't an Intel-based Mac, it can't run a system past 10.5.8.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I've forgotten my Wi-Fi password for a network set-up years ago and am trying to include a new iMac on the same network. How can I do this?

I've forgotten my wi-fi password for a home network set-up years ago on a Powerbook. I'm now trying to add a new iMac to the same network so I can have 2 hooked up. How can I retrieve my password for the network I created or can I set-up a new one? I did try the latter, but it didn't seem to work on the new iMac for some reason. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    HI, Welcome to the Forums...
The password may be stored in your keychain on the system you set up the original PowerBook.
Run KeyChain access in the utilities filder and see if you have a Airport base station password entry, from this you can reveal the password.
    Regards,
    Shawn

No, i don't. if i did i would have tried it. do you have to sign up an appled ID for iCloud? If the answer is yes then they should mention that in the set-up instructions.

Trying to clean up my iMac.  Noticed that while in finder, I click on Applications and in the list I see another folder called applications that is a duplicator of the original folder.  Is this truly a copy that can be deleted?

DO NOT remove either folder. DO NOT mess with any OS X system files either. If you have dupliocates check your files in iPhoto, iTunes and your iMovies libraries. Also check your data files, under ALL circumstances stay away from any OS X systems files or you will probably bork your Mac to the point it will not run.

You can transfer photos outside of iTunes. I do it all the time. THat said, i have a 50/50 success rate with them. I'd avoid sandisk and kingston, their bundled software triggers the 'too much power' warning.
I've had mixed luck with lexar, some work, some don't.
I did have good luck with an older 4 gig geek squad one.
Look for drives without software on them, without bright LED lights and I haven't gotten any larger than 4 gig to work, but that may just be me.
For a less troublesome way? h onestly, I use a SD card that I've formatted with the DCIM folder. I've never had one of them trigger the 'too much power' warning. Just make sure they're not SDXC. those don't work.

If a user account is deleted and the data for that account is not deleted, it is placed there. Yes, you can delete the files there.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Basic troubleshooting is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues, contact the carrier to troubleshoot the network connectivity issues.

    Hi Glenyse,
Did you find the answer to your question?  I have the same problem.  Or can anyone else help?
My wife’s 2012 Macbook Pro has Yosemite and is using Wi Fi for the internet connection.
Every time, both on startup and awaking from sleep, a window appears on the desktop with a locked icon saying, “Networksetup is trying to modify this system.  Type your password in to allow this”.
The window (which can’t be moved or dragged) shows the computer’s user name. The password has to be repeatedly typed in as many as 10 times and the highlighted ‘modify configuration’ box clicked before the window disappears and the computer then functions normally.
Needless to say, this is driving my wife up the wall…    I would certainly appreciate information on how to get rid of this troublesome window!
