Trying to clear up disk space

I'm trying to clear space on my hard drive, i´m using what size to find large files. It´s found in my home directory a temporary files folder containing around 4gigs of audio/video ts files, however i can't find these using a regular search. Why is this

If the files or the folder start with a dot, then OS X will skip over them. If that's not the case, then it may just be that search is flaky. If you search the forums, you'll find other posts where people have had issues with it. I use EasyFind myself.

• Clear empty disk space

When I use Disk Utility to Erase free space on my hard disk my whole mac grind to a holt with constant messages of 'your HD is almost full' - now it's obviously to do with how it clears the disk space but is there any way of stopping in grinding to a holt so early in the process and not alowing any apps to work?

Why are you erasing blank space?
If you are getting a hard drive full error, then you need to delete some files. You need ~10% of your hard drive free for the System and applications to work their behind the scenes magic.
Disk Utility is usually run to fix problems, if you have other applications open DU will very aggressively take control of your hard drive. Don't run it with other applications open!

• I am trying to resize disk space on parallels 6 for windows XP under configure Hardrive and I get the error resizing failed unable to resize last volume the file system of this volume might be damaged or not supported?  I am on a Mac using Parallels 6

I have been trying to increase my disk space for windows xp on my Imac and I am running parallels 6.  before opening windows I go into configure in parallels and open the hard drive and try to move the allotted disk space from 32 gig to 64 or any other increased gig and then apply and I get the error message: resizing failed unable to resize last volume.  The file system of this volume might be damaged or not supported.  How do I increase the size??  I just also did a disk repair utility with Apple on the Apple side of my IMAC.  Please Help!!   I had uninstalled SQL server on the windows side and needed to uncompress files to install this and then I ran short on disk space.

This sounds to me that your Parallels XP file system is corrupted and not the OSX file system.
Have you checked the XP file system while running the Parallels XP yet ?
However, it would be better to ask such question in the Parallels Forum http://forum.parallels.com/

• Prime Infrastructure 1.4: Clear Disk Space

In order to reduce disk space usage on Prime Infrastructure I will reduce the System Data Retention period (for aggregate data) and "Background Data Collection Task" raw data  retention (for non-aggregate data).   If I now run  'ncs stop / ncs cleanup / ncs start, will this inmediately clear the disk space or does some other event clear the disk space?
Thanks.

ncs cleanup should be able to retrieve some disk space.
You can check the details of how it works from this document here.

• No free disk space on my Macbook Pro- why?

Hi, i'm having a lot of trouble trying to free up disk space on my mac!
I have 120g HD with 8G RAM. I'm using OS X 10.8.5
Disk Usage on Activity Monitor says i have used 110.29G and only 10.18G free, which i find ridiculous! I have backed up my computer with an external hard drive, have deleted all of my unused apps (like Photoshop and some Microsoft office programs), movies, work, and most of my photos to free up space, leaving only photos, music and a few small word files here and there on my computer, yet i still have no space!
'About this mac' shows 62.97G of 'other' storage being used.. what could this be??
I have used apps like Trash It, CleanGenius and AppTrap to free space, but nothing seems to be working! The app CleanGenius enabled me to get rid of duplicate files and i managed to get 17GB free, but after i restarted my computer it went back down to 10GB! Why?!
On Disk Utility i have used the verify disk permissions, repair disk permissions, and verify disk functions but to be honest i don't think it made any difference.
I have used terminal to free cache's and clear the sleep-mode file that the mac makes.
Any suggestions would be fantastic as i don't understand why i still don't have any space!! I've been trying for weeks! Fr
Please help!!

• Relocated original files to desktop (on low disk space) and lost photos?

Help! My wife and I exchanged our vows on the Napali Coast and we lost our photos...
2006 Macbook, iphoto06:
As I was importing our 200 photos from the hike, my computer warned me that I was running out of disk space and stopped before finishing the load. I regretfully opted to delete the photos from the camera as it imported (bummer). The photos were safe in my iphoto library when I returned the following day and cleared some disk space on my hard drive. I then imported the remaining photos and everything looked normal.
Here's where it gets weird. So I was looking at a photo and accidently deleted it from the iphoto library. I located the original file and reimported it, however the computer told me that I already had the photo in the library. I looked into help and followed the instructions to drag the rolls onto my desktop and reimport them into iphoto. I did this and consequently lost some 50 very special photos. Now the iphoto library had this giant gap filled with grey !!!'s where the photos were. I looked into the original rolls folders and found a number of the original files were now missing? Something obviously happened from me having moved the files from the originals folder to the desktop. When I returned to iphoto, I recieved a warning that I was running out of diskspace again and some of the recent changes may have been lost!
I have searched for the files according to their file numbers (from the missing thumbnail) and the files are not coming up on my search. The original files are not in the trash either?
My questions:
1. Is there any way to trace the history of my actions and undo my actions or salvage my files?
2. The images still appear in my iphoto library thumbnails when scrolling down the screen (briefly before turning to grey !'s). Can I somehow salvage the image from the thumbnails?
3. Do I have to find the original files to see the photos again?
I have learned to not mess with orignial files in iphoto, never delete when importng, and always have mucho diskspace when uploading.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Will and Julia in Kauai

As I was importing our 200 photos from the hike, my computer warned me that I was running out of disk space and stopped before finishing the load.
You should always have a minimum of 10 GB of free space on your boot hard drive for safe and proper operation of your computer. you must get at least that much free space to go forward
I regretfully opted to delete the photos from the camera as it imported (bummer).
It is recommended that you never have iPhoto delete your photos - wait until they are imported and tested (I wait for a backup cycle or two myself) and then use the camera to format the memory card - this will save you from many problems and reformats you card with every use which eliminates other issues
The photos were safe in my iphoto library when I returned the following day and cleared some disk space on my hard drive. I then imported the remaining photos and everything looked normal.
Here's where it gets weird. So I was looking at a photo and accidently deleted it from the iphoto library.
How did you do this? using iPhoto or using the finder?
Again until you have a minimum of 10BG of free space you are risking many additional problems with your total system including iPhoto
I have searched for the files according to their file numbers (from the missing thumbnail) and the files are not coming up on my search. The original files are not in the trash either?
My questions:
1. Is there any way to trace the history of my actions and undo my actions or salvage my files?
No - but you may be able to recover the photos on your camera card using program like media recover - http://www.mediarecover.com/ - the trial version will tell you what is available for recovery
2. The images still appear in my iphoto library thumbnails when scrolling down the screen (briefly before turning to grey !'s). Can I somehow salvage the image from the thumbnails?
no
3. Do I have to find the original files to see the photos again?
Yes - either on your computer or on your camera media card
I have learned to not mess with orignial files in iphoto,
Yes - that is critical - doing so is likely to lose data and possibly photos
never delete when importng,
That is strongly recommended
and always have mucho diskspace when uploading.
Yes - 10GB minimum

• How to set the limit for the warning 'running out of disk space'

I am wondering if there's a way to set the number of GB before I get the system warning 'running out of disk space'.
I saw this question asked in 2010 and it did not get an answer. It was archived so I am asking again. I know how to monitor the available space on my startup disk, and how to empty the trash to clear up disk space. I am looking for an OS X setting that I can change.

My guess is that you want to lower the limit. IMHO I think the limit is alreay too low.
If you are seeing this warning regularly then your disk is severely overfull and needs to be replaced with a larger one.
Running the free space low eenough to get the warning greatly increases the chances for disk corruption. Once the disk gets corrupted then then next thing that happens is data lose.
You have a serious problem with your Mac that should be dealt with immediately.
Backing your data up would also be a good idea if you are not already doing that.

• OS X Mountain Lion Install - Not Enough Disk Space

I am installing OS X Mountain Lion.   The download went fine.   It rebooted and began the install then failed because there is not enough disk space.  The solution is obviously to make more room on the disk.
The problem is that everytime I boot my Macbook now, it takes me immediately into the installation for OS X Mountain Lion.  I cant seem to get back into the OS to clean up disk space.
Is there any way to force my Macbook to boot to Snow Leopard again?   If not, is there any way to clear up disk space from within the OS X Mountain Lion installer or the OSX Utilities?   I'd prefer not to have to wipe my entire Macbook and restore from backup then go through the upgrade again after freeing up disk space.
Thanks,
JG

Can't be that, [64bit] as this MacPro I have is fully capable, and is running 64bit.
In fact, as far as memory serves, this one I bought [B.T.O. option] was one of the 1st 64bit offerings made available.
But thanks for weighing in …
Anyone else have a suggestion?

Even the graphics capabilities, are in the favor of the MacPro, which I opted for:
ATI Radeon X1900 XT, rather than the default option at the time.
This graphics card is due to be replaced with the newer 5870 upgraded card.
Just have not slipped it in the case, as yet.
But even without the graphics card update, it is still better than the MacBook's graphics capabilities, surely?

• Empting the Trash - decreases disk space ?

I may be going crazy - but - I have noticed very recently then when I empty the Trash, my available disk space appears to decrease ? This is self defeating - as I am trying to free up disk space to improve performance. Is something happenning becasue my disk is getting very full ?
Have run Disk Utility on the disk - all reported to be ok.
Recently upgraded to Office 2004.

I have a separate discussion going regarding upgrading to Entourage 2004 - which appears to be dreadfully slow - while synchronising. I have just discovered that something is generating multiple files, all day long in the Entourage Temp folder - files named "Blck-xxxxxx" (where xxxxxx is numeric). Anywhere between 250kB and several MB - many of them. When I delete a few files elsewhere and empty the Trash I suspect that Entourage is racing ahead of me - taking up more disk space. This would explain the unexpected Trash emptying phenomena. But - any ideas on why Entourage 2004 should be generating the Blck files like mad (Entourage X didn't as far as I know - or at least must have deleted them...)?
Thanks

• Premiere Elements reports low disk space error right at the end

Ok, so I wait for 5 hours for a 3 hour long video to get saved to my computer.  It goes to 99% and then I get a low disk space error.  After I clear up space, and click Ok, it starts all over again.  Firstly, why doesn't PrE calculate/predict how much disk space I would need BEFORE starting to save, and secondly why does it at least not resume the saving process after I clear up disk space, instead it starts all over, with my 5 hours wasted?
Some serisous usability issues.  Is it just me or do these things drive others crazy too?
Expected more from Adobe...

Unfortunately, as PrE uses a 2-Pass Encoding scheme (helpful to get the best quality within the same file size), it does not know exactly how much space will be used, until well into the second pass - the first is a survey of any motion in the Clips on the Timeline, and the second is the actual Encoding, and writing of a file.
Another consideration, regarding disk usage is whether one is Exporting/Sharing both Audio & Video. If one IS doing a Multiplexed file (with both an Audio and a Video Stream in one file), a Video-only file is written first, and then an Audio-only file, with a few "helper files" to be used in just a moment. Then, when that has completed, PrE reads those helper files, and creates the final, Multiplexed file. Last, the two separate Audio-only and Video-only files are Deleted. That takes some space, as at some point, one will have three large files, though two will be Deleted, along with the little helper files.
How much defragmented, free-space do you have?
What is your I/O setup, i.e. the number of physical HDD's, and how they are allocated?
Good luck,
Hunt

• SCCM 2012 R2 DP - Reserve Disk Space issue

Hi Team,
Issue with SCCM 2012 DP. Reserve Disk space issue.
During DP installation I have given 100000 MB as Reserve disk space, now my DP Share drive reached below 97 GB of free space, now I’m unable to distribute packages to the DP.
Below is the error Message in Smsdpprov.log
Failed to find space for 105874160 bytes.
Solution tried:
Tried changing the reserve disk space value in Registry (HKLM- Software – Microsoft – SMS- DP- ReservedDiskSpace),
But the value is getting auto reset to old value after a restart.
Is there any way where I could change the Reserve disk space without reinstalling the DP Role?

Hi,
>>Is there any way where I could change the Reserve disk space without reinstalling the DP Role?
We need to edit the reserved free space in SQL database. But this is not supported by Microsoft.
Steps:
1) Run SQL query:
select SCR.ID, SCR.Name,SC.NalPath, SCR.Value3 from sc_sysresuse_property SCR join sc_sysresuse SC on SCR.SysResUseID = SC.ID where SCR.name = 'MinFreeSpace' and SC.NALPath like '%<DP_Name>%' and SC.RoleTypeID = 3
Note: you need to replace the <DP_Name> with your actual remote DP server name.
2) Use the returned ID in step 1). Run the below query to update the 'MinFreeSpace' value.
update sc_sysresuse_property set value3 = 'set desired value in MB' where name = 'MinFreeSpace' and ID = 'ID retained in previous select query'
Example:
update sc_sysresuse_property set value3 =20480  where name = 'MinFreeSpace' and ID = 75340198761234567
3) In the next package content update cycle, the reserveddiskspace registry value (under HKLM\software\Microsoft\SMS\DP) will be changed
to 20480.
Or you can restart the SMS_SITE_Component_Manager service on SCCM site server
to update the “reserved free space” value on remote DP.
Best Regards,
Joyce

• It all started with 'clearing disk space'.

Hey guys,
So i'm having this grey blank screen problem.
1) It started off while i was trying save some documents, didn't work so I went to Disk Utility, cleared the free space and then it was fine.
2) I then tried to surf the web on safari. Some sites couldn't load and some sites did and all of a sudden, my mac just hanged.
I tried to restart/shut down my mac through Finder and it just didn't restart/shutdown so I used the power button instead.
Lo and behold, it took so long to boot and when it did it came to a blank screen.
I did everything I could find on this support page.
1) Ran it in safe nothing happened
2) Ran it in recovery, nothing came out
3) Then it came to a grey screen when I tried rebooting it so i did the PRAM thing and that brought my mac back up.
So to check on it I did an 'EtreCheck' and here it is, seems to be... okay?

To run Diagnostics, you can use the D key during power up.
Using Apple Hardware Test
Using Apple Diagnostics (for machines after June 2013)
According to last EtreCheck you do not seem to have disk space issues. You can run it again to validate what you have.

• HELP! I'm trying to clear space on computer and it's not working.

Hi,
My computer is saying that I have very low disk space. I am trying to remove videos/photos/duplicates and the space is actually decreasing. I'm putting most of the stuff on a hard drive and deleting things from the trash. I'm also trying to delete movie clips (as opposed to projects) from imovie and I have no idea how to do it.
Is there any sort of system or something I can use to free more space??? And why is the space decreasing when I delete items from trash?
Thanks!
D

Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box. Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CDs and/or DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is *free*!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.  I store all 5000+ of my music & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin. There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine, to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidentally threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue. You can do this with a *FREE* utility called http://monolingual.sourceforge.netMonolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly. However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*.  Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

• Trying to free up Hard disk space

I am trying to free up hard disk space but I cannot find what is eating up most of it 112GB are used and about and about 42 of it is alloted to music and photos. I cannot find what is eating the bulk of the rest. I can't find any other large blocks of used space when I check folders on my Hard Drive. Any Ideas.

Use Whatsize. Same can be found on VersionTracker and MacUpdate.
*A few tips:*
I'm old fashion. I still keep my photos in a photo album. So when people come over my house, they can actually "touch" & "feel" my photos without me running to my computer to "show my photos".
Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or a .Mac account to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days. I store all 5000+ of my music (mp3s) files & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine, Google &/or MacGoogle to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

• Problem: There is not enough disk space available to process clips. Clear some space and try again.

Hi there.
I am running the newest FCPX 10.0.9 and Mavericks, and I am editing a large multicam project. I have approx. 190 GB left on my external event/project disk via USB3 (it has 2TB in total), and I get the error message:
"There is not enough disk space available to process clips. Clear some space and try again."
when I am trying to add clips to an angle in one of my multicam clips. I have made more than 8 multicam clips in the same event, without that problem, but now it won't let me add more.
What's the problem?

This was driving me nuts as well until I found the sneaky checkbox. In the editing tab in Preferences there is a checkbox for "Optimize media for multicam." If that's checked, Final Cut is rendering ProRes files for every clip you bring into multicam, so it just eats memory. Unchecking that solved my issues; hope it helps you or anyone who comes across this!
