Trying to compare FCP with Media 100 for a Public Access studio

Hi all,
I am new here. I do most of the review of products for our Public Access studio. We have a couple of existing Media 100 systems and we are considering adding or upgrading our NLE capabilities. Our studio manager had a chance to look at FCP being used at our high school and she came back with a number of impressions that I wonder about and would like to vet with people who know more about FCP. So, any comments would be helpful.
The high school media person demo’d FCP for her and let her play with it a bit. After looking at it herself, she says she would definitely say Media 100 is easier to understand/use, especially if you've never used non-linear editing before. That is fairly typical of the people doing Public Access production in our town.
However, it looks to her like there are a lot of tools that come with FCP that Media 100 either doesn't have or are not easily found in it. For example, she feels FCP’s set up looks more complicated and confusing compared to Media 100’s, but in FCP you can have up to 99 video lines in a program, where with Media 100 we're just going back and forth between the a and b video lines. Plus you can have up to 99 Audio tracks on FCP as well, where our max at the moment is 8. Now as to when you would need 99 video or audio tracks, she is not sure, but it is definitely a capability that we don't have in Media 100.
Titling looked easier to her on Media 100. With FCP there were a lot of filters involved and hoops to jump through, plus she couldn't do a word with each letter a different color, for example, unless she did each letter on a different track.
The media person warned her that FCP is really large. Apparently the program itself takes up like 35 GB of space on the hard drive, and a typical 30 min. project comes in at over 100 GB! She couldn't believe it, but she was assured it’s true. Even with our longest programs, like like a School Committee meeting thqat went 3 1/2 hours, it would came in at a max of 30 GB on the Media 100. She got the impression this big difference was so because Final Cut renders everything you do, including rendering any edits you make on your footage as new files, and stores it all in a huge folder. She thinks with Media 100, you import the footage and use it as is - the only things it will render are screen freezes, transitions, and color effects. Is that sort of comparison correct (and fair), or is something being missed?
She says in her experience that something like iMovie is the most basic as far as what you can do, then Ulead would be a step above that- the editing is basically the same, but you have a few more options. Media 100 would be next as far as ease of use and understanding of the program. FCP seemed a little confusing even to her. Comments or insights?

Welcome to the family, maybe.
I switched from M100 about four years ago, I was never so glad to give that company the boot. A direct comparison just isn't possible but I'll try to answer some questions. There is a Media 100 forum on creativecow.net.
she says she would definitely say Media 100 is easier to understand/use, especially if you've never used non-linear editing before.< </div>
Yes, absolutely, M100 has always had an elegant and refined interface. However, the paradigm in FCP is not opaque. It's far more interesting, deeper, more complex. So, yes, it's a bit tougher to grasp. But don't sell your students/users short. They'll get it.
99 tracks is marketing BS. The serious work is done with nesting. How many public access pieces need more than 5 or 10 video tracks?
Titling in FCP depends on third party filters like Boris or tools like LiveType and Motion. The basic titling tools in FCP are lame and difficult to use, in my opinion, compared to the elegant titler in M100 (as long as you don't launch Graffiti).
The installation includes tens of gigs of animation, movie and music loop resources that you don't need to load. The suite includes Motion, LiveType, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro and FCP.
If you're shooting DV, a 3-1/2 hour show is, umm, well, you look it up, DV is DV. But if you're capturing 3 hours from each of three cameras, that's a lot of DV.
Rendering depends on lots of things. M100's native codec handles lots of realtime stuff that FCP can't unless you've got a huge Macintosh. Previewing is not a big deal at lower rez in FCP, you get used to it. .
FCP is really scary. You can look at thousands of "I'm in way over my head, HELP!" posts here. But all those folks find they slip right into the Apple paradigm, the weirdly new workflow and start exploring the wide new world of serious editing that FCP opens up. You'll hate it for a few months because it's so dramatically different from M100. You'll love it, though.
If you want to continue the thread, give the rest of the disaffected former M100 users a few days to post their comments. There are many of us here. Then maybe start a new thread, one question at a time.

  • Comparing FCP and Media 100 file sizes

    Hi again,
    As suggested in the response to my prior question, one of the areas I could use help with for comparing FCP with our access studio's current Media 100 systems is the relative files sizes that can be expected with each. As I mentioned before, the feedback we got from our high school was that FCP seems to create very much larger working files than Media 100. Is that a fair comparison?
    As an example, if you have an hour of material on DV, how much disk space do you expect it to take on each of the systems when you bring it in for editing?
    (I suppose this gets back to what the normal working file formats are on both systems - I don't know)
    It seemed to be suggested that in the course of editing that possibly FCP created a lot more files (e.g. more disk space) than Media 100. Again is that fair, and to what degree?
    Thanks
    Bob

    Well, not knowing how Media 100 captures this footage
    puts us at a disadvantage.
    Me too
    FCP captures DV at 13.64GB/hour. This is NATIVE
    resolution...no compression whatsoever. A simple
    file transfer.
    OK, that is a helpful start.
    Does Media 100 do this, or does it
    capture it using one of it's codecs?
    Not really knowing that is part of my problem. Media 100 started with analog video capture which must have used a codec, and which I think creates a proprietary compressed file format. I have to suspect that DV intake is converted to that same format. If I understand correctly the analog intake offers options for the compression level so the files sizes will vary, but my impression is that the common ones are considerably smaller than 13 GB/h.
    The main issue I am trying to get a handle on is that the feedback we got from the high school was that "a typical 30 min. project comes in at over 100 GB". By comparison we input a 3 1/2 hour tape on the Media 100 and use on the order of 30 GB - something like 8 GB/hour or 4 GB for a half hour. Comparing against that report from the school for FCP there seems to be some sort of disconnect that I am trying to resolve. One hint was the thought that maybe the 100 GB included additional working files beyond the basic input files - working files generated during editing I suppose. By comparison Media 100 seems to generate a minimal amount of extra files.

  • Trying to compare Aperature with Adobe Elements for Mac

    Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Actually, your choice should be between Aperture and Adobe Lightroom. Either way, you'll still need Photoshop. Maybe you could get away with using Elements with Aperture or Lightroom, but I doubt it.
    Aperture (and Lightroom) are for organizing and dealing with your photos (all of them). Photoshop (and Elements) are for dealing with indivual photos. I for example, have imported all 80 thousand of my digital shots into Aperture. But I can't make my photos look like my photos in Aperture, so the "finals" take a trip through Photoshop, where I burn the corners, dodge people's faces, etc. Photoshop can't/won't catalog, organize, deal with your collection. But Aperture can't/won't do the things PS can on individual shots.
    So you may well ask whether you can use Elements instead of PS, but Aperture and PS are different beasts, and you probably need both.

  • Trying to compare item with number in PL/SQL report

    Hi,
    I'm using for my report SQL Query (PL/SQL Function body returning SQL Query). And I found that I can't to write:
    if v('ITEM_NAME')=1 then ..., because it is 'missing expression' error.
    I can only
    if v('ITEM_NAME') IS NULL then ...
    or
    if v('ITEM_NAME') IS NOT NULL then ...
    Why I can't to compare item value, for example, with number?
    Thanks!
    Karina.

    Hi,
    I'm using my own htmldb installation. The reports' code is:
    DECLARE
    q varchar2(10000);
    v_lesst_str varchar(255);
    v_lesst_stmt_2 VARCHAR2(100):='select lesst_id from lesson_types';
    v_meas_str varchar(255);
    v_meas_stmt_2 VARCHAR2(100):='SELECT meas_id FROM project_measures';
    BEGIN
    if v('P16_LESSONS_TYPE') is null THEN v_lesst_str:=v_lesst_stmt_2;
    ELSE v_lesst_str:=v('P16_LESSONS_TYPE');
    END IF;
    if v('P16_PRO_MEASURE') is null THEN v_meas_str:=v_meas_stmt_2;
    ELSE v_meas_str:=v('P16_PRO_MEASURE');
    END IF;
    q:='SELECT distinct ul.title, ul.summary, ul.details, ul.less_id
    FROM user_lessons ul
    WHERE ul.lesst_lesst_id IN ('||v_lesst_str||')
    AND ul.meas_meas_id IN ('||v_meas_str||')';
    return q;
    END;
    The error is occurred when I'm trying to compare item with number, for example, v('P16_LESSONS_TYPE')=1 in if condition.
    And the errors' text is next:
    "#1 error has occurred
    Query cannot be parsed within the Builder. If you believe your query is syntactically correct, check the ''generic columns'' checkbox below the region source to proceed without parsing. ORA-00936: missing expression"

  • FCP vs Media 100 Colour Space

    I have a client who will not digitise material into FCP because he says that the colour space in his Media 100 system is far superior.
    He is editing DV material via firewire to FCP and component analogue to Media 100, (yes I know the perils of going in via analogue from DV to a DV codec... but he insists...)
    DV vs analogue arguments aside, is the colour space in Media 100 superior?
    Actually, what is colour space? I get the concept, (just,) in Photoshop but is there a difference for editing systems.
    I was once told that the DV encoding system was better in Avids than in FCP, but I'm unsure of the quality of my source information... So now I'm wondering if there is a difference on all edit systems.
    Finally, if there is / isn't a difference in the DV codec, does it make a difference for uncompressed material.
    Many thanks,
    LEE

    Here are some things to be aware of:
    Media 100 picture size is either 640 x 480 or 720 x 486. DV picture size is 720 x 480. Those numbers don't convert easily. There will be jittery motions during pans and when people move. The only way to combat this is to make FCP use the D1 picture size of 720 x 486. My experience is this never looks good.
    Everything that will be recompressed will have to go through the P6000 board of the Media 100. This takes FOREVER! It takes me 5 hours to encode a 1 hour DVD on my Media 100, which has 2 1GHz processors. My 700 MHz iMac at home encodes a 1 hour DVD in less time. The P6000 hardware slows encoding to other formats way down.
    There is a difference from one codec to the next. But capturing in one Codec 1 and converting to Codec 2 to try to make up for poor quality of Codec 2 will not help. Codec 2's quality problems will still be there. It's the nature of Codec 2. Graeme is right in saying that it will ruin picture quality. On top of Codec 2's problems, you're adding a generation. It's like transferring from DV to Beta, and then recording Beta to VHS because the Beta quality is better than VHS, even when your final output is intended to be VHS. It makes more sense to go DV to VHS in the first place.
    Unless you intend to edit on Media 100, there is no point in digitizing to it. Save the hassle, the time, the money, and the quality by keeping everything native DV. Have your client read these posts if he still won't budge. We are experienced in this field.
    By the way, before anyone says anything about me comparing DV to VHS, that is not my intention. I threw obvious formats out there to show workflow orders and to give an analogy. DV is a very good codec. I will tell you that I like M100 better, but DV is not that far behind. I use DV at home, and I am very happy with the results. In fact, I was debating between M100 and FCP at home for my side business of wedding videos, and have decided to go the FCP route due to quality and cost efficiency. DV is not VHS quality. It is far beyond VHS. DV is far beyond DVD quality. I feel DV is above even Beta SP.

  • Trying to consolidate project with Media Manager but it's not working

    I have a 3 minute final video that I want to consolidate with media manager. I would like to have it copy the portion of the clips I used plus 1 second handles. I have checked every appropriate box but it still will not create smaller clips. For example I have a 5 GB movie clip that I used about 4 seconds of in my final edit. Final Cut is still copying over the whole file into the new folder instead of just extracting the portion I used plus the handle. I have deselected the box referring to include master clips outside of selection.
    I have gotten this to work before, is this a known issue? Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

    Robert,
    Media Manager has a few quarks (you've no doubt noticed!). The two biggest that I've noticed are:
    CUTS MADE IN TIMELINE OF SEQUENCE
    Once a larger clip is loaded into a sequence, and cuts are made to it within the sequence Media Manager loses track of the the missing middle parts. For instance if you load an hour long clip into a sequence. Make a cut at 5 minutes and a cut at 55 minutes, then delete the middle 50 minutes and slide the two cuts together; Media Manager should represent that only 10 minutes would be retained when "deleted unused media is selected." Instead, it will think the entire cut is still being used.
    *To solve this: "Select All" cuts in the sequence, then right click and select "Make Clip Independent"*
    CUTS WITH SPEED CHANGES
    The other issue with Media Manager, cuts that have speed changes (anything other 100%) may not reconnect correctly in the new consolidated sequence. This has been a long time problem and has gotten much better in version 6. However, it still has some weirdness...
    *To solve this: "Make sure you add some amount of handle. I use 1 sec and it seems to work on larger complex projects."*
    Hope that helps. Good luck.

  • I have the new macbook pro with retina and I am trying to back up with wd passport for mac and is telling me it is going to take 7days

    I have the new macbook pro with retina and I am trying to back it up, with wd passport for mac and is telling me it is going to take 7days. Any Ideas? Im afraid that means there is something wrong with my hard drive. I have verified the disk and it says everthing is ok.

    It seems to be a common problem that those drives don't perform well, at least not with Time Machine.
    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
    Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
    Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
    Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Aspect ratio problem in Windows Media Player for DVD from DVD Studio Pro

    So I made a DVD with DVD Studio Pro and it looks good in Apple's DVD Player, on an Insignia DVD player appliance and on Playstation 2. Both the movie and the deleted scene were 16:9 from camera to Final Cut Pro and they show that way in all these players.
    But on Windows Media Player for Windows XP, the program thinks the movie is 4:3 and the deleted scene is 16:9. Nero's Showtime has the same exact behavior, but at least you can force aspect ratio on Nero.
    Besides being longer, the movie is different from the deleted scene in that the movie was originally out of Final Cut Express on an older Mac and it was encoded big endian. The deleted scene was output from Final Cut Pro and encoded little endian. I didn't think it would make a difference, but I tried outputting the movie from Final Cut Pro on the newer Mac and it did come out little endian. I took that into DVD Studio Pro, got rid of the old VIDEO_TS folder and re-built the project, burnt a new DVD. Then I went back to Windows and...
    ...the same exact problem. Some of the people I give this DVD to will be using Windows Media Player to view it, which is why I want this to not be an issue at all. What am I overlooking?

    Look, everyone here (who each have been creating DVDs for over a decade) is telling you the same story. WMP is buggy. Everyone in the industry knows that. Hardware manufacturers like Dell and HP, know that. Why don't you use the DVD player program that they put on the hard drive? Sure one "Hollywood" title works. Did I mention that WMP is buggy? Test a thousand titles, and I'm certain that you will find some discs have problems on WMP, and WMP alone. (And it isn't my assertion that Hollywood DVDs have issues in WMP, everyone is telling you that.) No one has a solution for this, except to not use WMP. Let me repeat once again, no one has a solution for this except to not use WMP. It is impossible to add any sort of programming to the disc that will detect which player is being used to play the disc and compensate for the problems of that player.
    Let me put it this way, if you have a disc that plays fine on Zeus's device, and on Apollo's device, and on Hera's device, and on Hermes' device, and on Artemis' device, but you have problems with Athena's device, then logically, Athena's device has a problem... not the disc. Your own experience has proved this to be true. If you were having problems with every device used, THEN you could rightfully say that there is a problem with the disc.

  • Trying to find  termplates with drop zones for FCP 6  Help please.

    I'm on FCS 2 (FCP6) and I'm looking for some templates that I can use to create a short video montage. I wold like to have images moving slowly around the screen with 'firework' effects going off around them. I've seen this done with a template but that was done on FCP 7. This would take the rest of my life to do manually so the question is are the kinds of templates WITH DROP ZONES available for use in FCP6? I've searched around but can only find templates for fonts, transitions and so on. Any help much appreciated.

    I've just realised that the template I was looking for in FC is actually available in Motion and I'd failed to install it, so I'm sorted. If there is a source of free templates I'd be thrilled to find them.

  • Updating issues with Media Encoder for PC

    Um I'm sorry if there was a post for this, but I couldn't find one as far as I know.
    Okay I got my video all set to export from Premiere to the Encoder. I hear the sound and etc. After it gone through the encoder, the video comes out fine except it doesn't have sound yet it has sound in premiere.
    I think the issue is that the Media encoder didn't update like premiere did, but when I tried to update it won't do it. I even manuallly downloaded the update files and try to install it that way, but it won't work. It doesn't even give me the option to do it. It says to quit the update for media encoder. I have 3 other programs that are doing the same thing too.
    I don't know what to do. I don't think I can uninstall that program itself. Any suggestions? I can take screen shots of what happening if anyone needs me to.

    Start reading the help file or manual, watch tutorials and get a basic edutation in NLE in general and CS4 in particular, if multiplexing is over your head currently. Multiplexing is one of the settings in AME.

  • Compare ipad2 with ipad3, garageband for acoustic guitar and voice recording, backing tracks.

    I am interested in purchasing an ipad for recording music using garageband, acoustic guitar & vocals, and using to add rhythm/bass, to create tracks to use in performing solo gigs.
    After reading about problems many were experiencing with NOISE after upgrading to an ipad3, and a GB upgrade, I am not sure if this
    is a viable purchase.  If this is my main use of the ipad (along with itunes, chart storage and general  use for solos gigs), should I be going in this direction, or more of a simple recording studio?
    Is ipad2 just as good as ipad3 for this main purpose?
    Any advice would be helpful,
    Thanks,

    Assuming it does not have a pickup, any instrument that the microphone picks up can be recorded.
    (If it does have a pickup, you can probably just plug it in.)
    GarageBand is simply a fancy tape recorder.  Anything that can be converted to an audio frequency electrical signal can be recorded.
