Trying to connect my iBook to PC

Hello,
I've been trying to set up file sharing between my Windows laptop and my iBook wirelessly throuth AirPort Express. I have managed to access my iBook files from my Windows laptop but not the vice versa. I can't seem to connect the iBook to the other laptop, am I doing something wrong with the IP address or something?
Please help, I'm a new Mac user so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Scott

  • Tried to connect to TV, display (ibook?) died

I hope someone can help me with this one!
I have been having some issues lately connecting my ibook to a tv ... kinda of had to fidget with the video plug to get it to work right. It would be almost all the way plugged in but not quite and then it would show up on the tv.
Well, today I was doing this routine again, fidgeting with the plug trying to get it to display on the tv, and the ibook screen was flickering and then it went totally black. The backlight is also not turning on.
I was also in the middle of transferring a 700mb file from an external storage disk to my ipod.
I couldn't get the screen to turn back on and didn't nkow what else to do so I forced a reboot.
Now it still won't turn on. It is sounding the chime. I <think> the harddrive is spinning but i'm not sure. I zapped the pram, and reset the pmu (well i followed the directions, but there's no way to tell whether it actually reset or not). I also put my installation disk in thinking, surely it would boot from that. Well it was spinning in the drive, but still no screen so i have no idea if it is starting or not.
Now I cannot eject the disk, even if I hold down the trackpad button.
    Any advice??
Is it possible that it's stuck in some sort of inbetween tv and normal mode??
Or has the logic board failed (please no!)

i believe that your mlb has failed. if you let it sit
for a while and eventaully high fans come on then its
    def dead
mlb? Sorry... not up to speed with the acronyms.
And do you mean let it sit and the fan will come on on its own??

  • .mac account expired, but iBook still trying to connect?

Hi all, I'd love some help. Let me try to breakdown the issue as best I can:
My girlfriend's iBook is an older, 30gb model, which she's had for several years. 30gb is simply not enough, as you can imagine, even for her simple music and net needs. Recently, with very little memory remaining, she began to notice that memory was getting eaten up, even though she wasn't adding any files, was regularly clearing her browser cache, etc. So I began to investigate this problem.
First, I deleted all Garageband-related material, freeing up about 3.5gb! Good riddance. Next, per instructions I'd seen elsewhere, I checked the Console to make sure that the regular maintanence programs have been running recently. They have.
But in console I also noticed a lot of repeating command lines, which is the main part of my question now. When she first got the iBook, she had a year's subscription to .mac, which is a sort of networked backup and web-sharing service as best I understand it. She never renewed her subscription, but the "network" icon remained in Finder.
However, it appears to me that her iBook is still trying to connect to the .mac network. Here are (what I hope are) the relevant command lines I see being repeated endlessly in console:
"dotmacsyncclient[486] Failed to login to account - command failed: .Mac rejected either your user name or your password. Please verify your .Mac member name and password in the .Mac preferences in System Preferences."
    AND:
"webdavd[600]: network_mount: WebDAV protocol not supported; file:
    mount.tproj/webdav_network.c; line: 2703"
    *So... MY QUESTIONS:*
    1. What are these command lines about? How can I make them stop?
    2. I believe that these repeated behaviors may help explain why memory was "disappearing" on her computur. Can anyone verify this? If not, can anyone offer an alternative explaination?
    3. Any other simple, effective suggestions for freeing up more memory?
THANK YOU very much in advance for your patience in reading and helping me understand what's going on here! Arigato gozaimashita!

This problem appears to have been fixed by turning "iDisk Syncing OFF" -- see this thread for details:

    Hello there, Goraksanat.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some good pointers for troubleshooting your issue:

I am trying to publish my ibook. When I click the publish icon I immediately get this message: 'iBooks Author couldn't connect to the iBooks store. Check your internet connection, then try again.' My internet connection is fine, and this book was uploading fine yesterday. I want to change metadata.

When you are having problems with a site - consider weather between you and it and amount of traffic (time of day).
Bad weather can cause problems with a connection as it travels on the information highway - hazard a guess all traffic that went through Buffalo is being routed elsewhere.
Bad weather can slow down handshake etc to the point of requiring too many resends - so Ibook is timing you out.

  • Error while trying to connect to network

My powerbook will be 3 years old in about 2 weeks and it is now having problems connecting to wireless networks. It connects fine to the network at my parent's house, and they have a dsl router from verizon. However, a little while back, I noticed that I could no longer connect to the wireless network in my apartment, which has the same type of dsl router (also verizon). I keep getting an message saying there was an error trying to connect to the network. I can still get on to the internet at the apartment if I connect via ethernet but I can no longer connect wirelessly. My brother has just recently experienced the same problem and he has an ibook. He can connect at our house, but cannot connect wirelessly in my apartment.
Yesterday, though I was at my new apartment trying to connect to the wireless network the neighbor set up. It's some router with comcast. I was getting the same error message about being unable to connect and yet all my other roommates can connect fine wirelessly. All of them use PCs, and I wasn't sure if there was something wrong with my airport or anything else that could be wrong with my computer. All the networks are WEP password protected and I'm using the correct password, the computer just will not connect.
Is there something wrong with my computer or is there some information I may be missing from the router? I just don't understand why I can connect to some networks and not others.

I think you just have to keep trying the reset routines. Leaving the device turned off for a spell may be helpful.

  • Connect broken ibook to new macbook pro for data recovery

Greetings all. I'm a long time mac user but this is my first post on the forums. Hope you folks can help me out.
I want to transfer information from my old ibook g4 (running OS 10.5.?) to my new MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.3). The catch is the ibook's monitor is not working, but the hard drive is. Also I don't have a firewire cable to connect the 2 computes or (option 2) a cable that would allow me to connect the ibook to an external monitor. In order to get either of those cables I will have to find them online as the closest store is 2.5 hours away.
As far as I can tell the ibook's wireless is still working but I don't think sharing is turned on...
Can any of you think of a way I could make a wireless network btw the computers? I know the ibooks passwords etc...is there any way I can get in to the ibook and turn sharing on without having use of its monitor?
Any ideas would be really helpful. Mac support said there is no way...but common I've done amazing things with my Mac there must be a way!
Here's how this all came about:
Last Monday my husband was using my sacred ibook G4, which has given me 6 years of flawless service and was continuing to work perfect until this day. He picked it up to move it to the living room and accidentally dropped it. It landed, open and running, on one of it's hinges, instantly smashing it.
After taking the ibook apart and assessing the damage we decided the best option was replacement hence my brand new Macbook pro.
There is no visible damage to the ibooks lcd screen, but somewhere in the components is/are lose connections preventing the monitor from working. The frame on the side where the power cable plugs in, at the monitors hinge, broke and damaged a green wire connected to the screen.
Thanks for your consideration folks. I'd sure like to get the info off the ibook. PS my husband feels terrible about what happened but on the plus side hello new laptop!

    bug,
Apparently the transfer stopped part way through.
Hmm that doesn't make a lot of sense unless....
on the now exposed area, touches the frame the external monitor will stop working.
So you must absolutely prevent that from happening..
the external monitor will stop working.
You're probably dragging the graphics chip down when that happens or causing a logic board power spike (probably negative) that crashes that chip or worse the CPU. What can happen if that keeps on is that a tiny fuse that's about a 1/32" wide and 1/8" long can blow on the logic board. It's in the inverter driver circuit. That will require someone to perform a microsolder repair. The other thing that could happen is that the inverter driver could blow up and that would be fatal afa the internal display is concerned.
OK so I'm a little confused here:
able to confirm that when plugged into a monitor the computer still works.
.. the ibook monitor still powers up do you think it may be possible to repair the current monitor?..Computer starts up fine, monitor powers up as well but does not display any images other than blue blank screen
So the computer was working and now it's not?
I think you should stop trying to run the computer with that inverter cable damaged. If you can't affect a repair you should probably unplug the inverter cable. The bottom would have to come off as well as the lower shield.
I happen to have a 14" 1.42 GHz iBook taken apart and can send you pictures of the position of that cable's socket if you email me. (I'm attempting a PMU swap with this 1.42).
I'd like to get my info back
So with that cable disconnected you'd need to see if the iBook will go into target mode.
If not then I'd disconnect the LVDS cable and try it w/ the external monitor. Now that's going to require that the upper case come off as well as the upper shield. There are many gottchas to doing this, the worst of which is damaging the power button socket on the logic board.
Ultimately you might have to pull the hard drive and use an external case/USB adapter to recover that info.
they ran into problems during the transfer but they couldn't explain what happened
    "they" seem a bit inept!

  • An unknown error occurred when Dreamweaver tried to connect to this Contrib

    Hello all,
I just started having a Dreamweaver problem that's perplexing me...
I have 2 machines, a G4 and a G5 both running Dreamweaver ( I have MX2004 and 8 on both machines, this problem effects both versions on the G5 only).
Everything was humming along just fine until the other day when suddenly I was receiving error messages on my G5 stating
"An unknown error occurred when Dreamweaver tried to connect to this Contribute site".
Then my local folder containing the website that I was working on would go gray (in Dreamweaver) and lose it's folder icon. It would still look like it was there, just no icon. When I would click on the drop down triangle it would state, " The local root folder, (and the folders name), does not exist. Please select a new local folder by clicking the Manage Sites button".
I then ran a couple of tests on the G4 and it connected fine, I was able to edit, upload/download, everything as usual. I then attempted to connect to the site with Transmit on the G5...no problem.
In the site definition I remembered that it may be set up to work with Contribute sites, but this was not the case, the box was unchecked.
I then had the idea to export the site key from the G4 and grab it onto the G5 and import it into Dreamweaver...I did this AND IT WORKED! Once...after that back to the 2 usual errors.
I found a work around for now...do my editing/site building in Dreamweaver, and upload with Transmit...this works fine...I've found that the errors only happen AFTER I've connected with the site(s). I've tried this with the other sites I maintain and it was the exact same thing.
Are there any similar experiences out there? This has really got me stumped... can't imagine what it is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

  • Why do i get an error message while trying to connect to airport network?

i just installed an airport card in an iMac G5, archived and installed Tiger, updated everything (while connected via ethernet) and now when i'm trying to connect to the wi fi network in the house i keep on getting a message saying there's an error while trying to connect to the network. i have a PowerMac G5 connected wirelessly with no problems, i have an iBook connected to an Airport Express via ethernet and a Mac Mini connected to an ethernet port on the Airport Extreme Base Station. there's a DSL modem connected to the other ethernet port on the Base Station. occasionally the iMac will connect to the network, but that's once every few restarts or log outs.
    help.

i called apple support and they said after trying tons of software related tweaks and such that it's probably the airport card and to see if it's in correctly and if it is just exchange it for a new one.

  • Problems trying to connect to a network printer

I am logged onto a network over a vpn. I am then trying to connect to the print services. If was using windows the following instructions are given:
"You can print using icsafecom1, if you go to start, run and type in \\icsafecom1 then press ok it should ask you to input you username and password, you should then see a list of printers if you right click on the first printer called ictprintservice mono and say connect it should then connect you to the printers via the vpn. "
Now I have no instructions for how to do this on a iBook. I have tried to connect to the server icsafecom and get to enter my username and password but the get an error (error code -50) and can go no further. I think that this might be a problem with server connections - console gives the following output:
    ===== Tue Nov 29 2005 ===== 11:28:53 Europe/London =====
mount_smbfs: No credentials cache found krb5cc_getprincipal
mount_smbfs: No credentials cache found krb5cc_getprincipal
    mount_smbfs: no shares found
mount_smbfs: no share specified for ig05@ICSAFECOM1
I have also tried to connect to the printer via the printer setup options but it is not clear how to do this either.
Does anyone have any ideas about the problem as the support staff here are not mac literate!
    Many thanks.

  • MacBook Air keeps trying to connect to old server

My new MacBook Air, just like its predecessor iBook, keeps trying to connect to an old server which I am not using (having moved to a different continent!). I have tried deleting it using Finder - Go - Conneact to Server, but it persists. It flashes up the error messaage: "There was a problem connecting to the server XXX. The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again." I have done all this, but it makes no difference. Can you help please? I use a Time Capsule as my router, with an AirPort Express booster in another room, and my main iMac desktop does not have this problem. The old network was in use in the UK, and I will want to connect to it there when I visit from time to time.
    Many thanks
    John

Check the Login Items in the Users & Groups section of system Preferences for a reference to this old server. If it is there highlight it and click the Minus ( - ) button.

Or has the logic board failed (please no!)

There is a chance a hardware failure, ie: video component, may be the
problem. I'm not an expert, but sometimes if the connections don't work
correctly and you have to mess with them to make something work, it
may be the video component gone wrong. At the point where both the
external display and internal display share a signal from the video circuit.
And that may be essentially part of the logicboard, at that point.
The machine really needs to have a proper diagnostic to find out what
has gone wrong and get an estimate. If the machine's hard drive content
is not backed up externally, that would be the main concern: lost work.
A possibility exists in trying to see if the computer would boot into FireWire
Target Disk mode (without a display on the computer in question) to see
by visual clues, if the TDM was working. And that'd be something a
second working Mac with FireWire ports would be necessary to have
and use to see if the hard drive of the defective computer is accessible.

  • Cannot connect Mac ibook to WRT54G router

I have a WRT54G router connected to my desktop. My Dell laptop connects without any problems. Now I am also trying to connect a Mac ibook to the same router. The Airport reads the connection, but it does not accept any passwords. The dropdown of connection options includes Personal WPA, Personal WPA2, Enterprise WPA, and others, but none of them accept my password. I have read some threads about downgrading, but I am concerned that if I make changes to adapt for the Mac, I might lose my Dell connectivity.

Use Firefox or Internet Explorer. Open http://192.168.1.1/ (if you have not changed the LAN IP address of the WRT54G), enter your password (default "admin" ) and you should see the web interface of the router. Click on Wireless. Post the current settings you have there. Then click on Wireless Security and also post the current settings you find there. That will tell us how you have set up the wireless on the router and then we'll see how you correctly set up the iBook for this.

Can you please try to put a dollar sign before the password? That works most of the time.
