Trying to copy an imovie file to thumb drive

Hi, I am trying to copy an imovie original clip from my iMac to a thumb drive to give to someone else, who will likely be playing it on a PC.  They want the original file (5G - 1080 HD).  I have exported it within iMovie using both the "export movie" and "export using QT" options (within Share menu).  they both worked but give me much lower rez .mov files (800 MB and 360 MB).  When I play them back in QT7, the tracking is very choppy, far worse than the original file.  Is there another way to share the 5G file and preserve the high rez?  Advice welcome.  Thank you.

I am not sure why you are having this problem if you chose the highest quality. I have never expierienced anything like it.
If you have iDVD, you might try finalizing the project, then using iDVD to burn it to a disc.
If that doesn't work, than I'm sorry and I can't help you,
Hazzard V

trying to copy a 10gb file to a memory stick but there's an error msg, file to large for the file format of the stick. is there a way around this

If you use 'Disc Utility' you can format the stick (this will erase its contents) to be exFat which will still work with Mac and Windows but allow a larger file sizes to be placed onto the stick.
Disc Utility > Click the drive on the left > Erase (tab) > Change format to ExFat > Erase > Try putting the file on to the stick again.

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extrem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptops hard drive??

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • How do I find and copy all pictures to a thumb drive

we have several old mac lap tops - I'd love to restore them all since they are getting SLOW.  How do I ensure I grab all movies and pictures and transfer to either a CD or thumb drive before restoring.  I'm nervous that I might delete / lose data.  There is alot in the PHOTOBOOTH as well - not sure what those files are called (tif or jpeg)

You can clone the respective HDDs using Disk Utility>Restore or Carbon Copy Cloner.  That will guarantee that you have all images and movies backed up.

  • Copying Time Machine files to external drive for use with PC

Hello! Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
My MacBook Pro recently died. I have it backed up by Time Machine on an external drive. Now I'd like to copy my files from the backup to another external drive so that I can access them later from a PC computer running Windows (7 or 8). Is that possible? The Time Machine drive, I believe, is formatted specifically for Mac, but the external drive I'm trying to copy to is FAT32. Can I connect both to a friend's Mac, look for the files I need, and then copy them from the backup drive to the other external drive? Will a PC computer be able to read them?
    Thanks!

Usually that error indicates a drive malfunction; specifically, the drive is spinning down and not responding to bus signals. Some "Eco" or "green" drives are known for this behavior. The following steps may help:
Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive is connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port on the computer.
If a firmware update is available for the drive, apply it.
Contact the drive manufacturer to see whether there's a firmware setting you can change.
If you installed vendor software for the drive, uninstall it.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, try another drive.

  • Can't move my iMovie file to external drive

I just finished creating an iMovie file. When I try to move it to an external drive, I get an "unexpected error file (Error code 0).
When I try to "save as" to my external, I get the message: "A Project File is Missing. The file "Clip 05.dv could not be opened and is being skipped." I rebooted, tried again and got the same result. This has never happened to me before - and I need to move it to another machine that has double layer DVD capabilities. Any suggestions?

    Possible work-arounds:
    1. Share (export) the iMovie back to your camcorder and either use that DV tape to import it into another computer, or re-import it into a new iMovie. You can open the new iMovie on your external drive by selecting that when the opening box appears.
    2. Share the iMovie as QuickTime Full quality and then put that quicktime movie into a new iMovie on the external drive. This one requires that you have sufficient drive space to create the quicktime movie.
Either method, you need to be finished with your editing because the edits will be incorporated into the movie. The quicktime movie will be one long clip.
And, as recommended, be sure the external is formatted correctly.

  • Very slow copy speeds from my USB thumb drive.  Why?

I have an 8GB USB thumb drive. When I copy files to/from it to my Mac Pro (Early 2008 2.8Ghz), the transfer speeds are very slow. But when I use it with my 2009 Macbook, the speeds are fast. Why would it work faster with a low end Macbook than with a Mac Pro? I'm using one of the USB ports on the front of the Mac Pro.

    Anyone have an idea?

  • Best way to copy large VM files from one drive to another?

Hi all, I am wondering what the best and fastest way there is to copy a large VM file from one drive to another (external drive to internal drive). Should the .pvm folder (in my case with Parallels) be zipped first? The files I need to copy range from 50 to 70gb. thx for any insight! ps. Even Bombich admits it's difficult for CCC to do...not clear why, but it does slow a full clone down to a crawl. I also have Chronosync at my disposal, but suspect the same is true there as well. Cheers!
    coocoo

I don't think it matters much which way you do the job. I use Parallels to compress by drives on a regular basis. If you want to copy a dynamic VM, which can grow to just about any size as required, to another drive you will use about the same amount of time zipping the VM - transfering the VM - unzipping the VM, as you would just moving the VM.
I've moved my VM files to a second partition that does not get cloned to my bootable backup that I create with SuperDuper. I've excluded my entire VM folder from Time Machine and just make zipped backups for each system after any large Service Pack Updates from Microsoft, or any intricate program installations. These get copied to a second partition on my Time Machine drive manually.
My VM's sizes are kept under control by using common Documents-Movies-Music folders for the Mac and the VM's. My VM's do not have the data files the programs use, they are on my Mac and get backed up every hour with Time Machine.
Reinstalling a VM just means deleting the broken copy, unzipping my latest backup, and putting into the same folder that Parallels knows to use. The data files are always accessible, even if they were created after my latest VM backup.

  • How to store iMovie files on external drive?

I'd like to store large video files on an external drive, but iMovie seems to automatically import everything onto my internal hard drive.
    1) Can I set it to automatically import to an eternal drive?
    2) If not, which files can I safely move to an external to free up space on the internal drive?
    3) Should I move the raw files to an external before I edit them, or after?
    4) In any case, my general question is how to conserve space on my internal drive by using an external drive for iMovie files?

Get an external drive and make sure it is formatted as HFS+ (journalled) or MacOS Extended (journaled) (two ways of saying the same thing. If the external drive is formatted as FAT32, iMovie will not recognize it.
You can reformat if necessary using the Disk Utility.
When you import from your videcamera, you can select your External Drive as the target of the import.
If you have Event Files that are already on your internal drive, you can move them to the external drive, but you must do this from within iMovie. If you move the events using the Finder, your projects that link to these events will be broken.
To move the Events from within iMovie, select VIEW/EVENTS BY VOLUME.
In your Events Source Pane, you should see all your Events and also an icon for your external drive. Drag an Event icon to the hard drive icon, and it will move the Event to the hard drive, and automatically place it into the proper folder on the external drive so that iMovie can recognize it.
Leave Projects on your internal drive. If you upgrade to iMovie 09, it allows projects to be on the external drive, too. Project files are generally pretty small, though. Your video footage is in the events.

  • Ghost Files on Thumb Drives??

So whenever I delete a file off my thumb drive while using my mac, for some reason, it shows up as having been deleted, but I don't regain memory space. When I bring my thumb drive to a PC, it shows all these files as still being on the thumb drive.
    1. What is Apple's reasoning in doing this? Does it serve some higher purpose?
    2. Does anyone know of some freeware or something that will allow me to completely remove a file from the thumb drive without having to bring it to a PC?
    Much obliged,
    Kristopher

When you put a file from a flash drive in the trash, it is not deleted... simply moved to the trash on that volume. In order to actually delete it, you must empty the trash, and you must do it while the flash drive is still mounted. If you have ejected it, its trash obviously can't be emptied.
If you are emptying the trash with the flash drive connected and finding that the files are still not being deleted, then there's something wrong, as that is not normal behavior.

I want to transfer the Mac Mini user guide (manual) to my thumb drive but do not find how to do it.  Help, please!

The thumb drive is on the desktop.  This is the most embarrassing question I have had to ask in public in a long time, but, how do you drag something.  When I try by holding down my mouse on the file name I want to move it doesn't drag it just gives me several other options.  I left Microsoft for this and I know nothing about Apple computers except for my iPad.
