Trying to copy backups.backupdb to another drive

When I try to copy this file, I get the following:
"The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled."
I went to command-i, for get info, and enabled read-write priviledges for the file and sub folder but still get this message.
How can I copy this to another drive? The current drive is failing and disk utility recommends reformatting.
Thank you for your help!

Disk Utility gave me the same advice and I got the same caution about ownership.

You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.
Since this is a Time Machine drive, I found these instructions here -- Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive -- that say to copy the Backups.backupdb to a new drive.
Every time I do this, the process gets to about 150,000 files then crashes my Mac. Sometimes it's a grey screen with words telling me to hold the Power Button down to force a reboot. Sometimes it just crashes and reboots itself.
I've repaired disk permissions and it keeps happening.
How do I copy Backups.backupdb to a new drive when the process keeps crashing my Mac?

Try using one of the clone apps to copy. It's possible the drive is too damaged and the files will not copy.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone.

I disconnected my old computer so I will have to reconnect it I am sure. thank you for any help. Last time I transferred I used a product I purchased. That was a long time ago.

First of all make sure that you've definitely backed up the movies to your external hard disc.
In iMovie click on any event you don't want, go to the file menu and select 'move event to trash'. Then do the same for any unwanted projects - 'move project to trash'. Quit out of iMovie and empty the trash.
    Hope that helps!

  • Error -36 when trying to copy AVI files from External Drive to Mac

    Hi
Hoping for some help with a problem I appreciate others have faced.
I bought a new video camera recently and have just tried to copy the AVI files from the first few videos to my mac but am getting the error code 36 that states the files cannot be read or written.
The format of the camera is MS-DOS (FAT 32) but when I tried changing it to MAC OS Extended it did something to the camera so the mac could then not recognise it when I tried to re-connect it via the USB port.
I've been able to copy the files onto my friends Windows laptop no problem so don't believe them to be corrupt.
Have also tried the dot_clean fix but this didn't work.
Could there be another reason for the error? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Bummer. I'm not really doing this for speed though, just for total storage volume and constant, worry-free, no-brainer back-up. I guess RIAD in general is something I need to study up on. Would a simple mirror of one 500GB drive to another (back-up) - and do that twice - be a better, more reliable way to go?
I've used Tri-Backup3/4 for years for Backups, it's fast, automatic, reliable, works in the background if you wish...
Back-up software always seemed to have some kind of a hiccup to it, but I'll certainly look into Tri-Backup3/4. I used to Retrospect years ago, a rather fussy thing if I recall.
Now, on the Safe Mode boot - not a success BUT a different result!
I got the -36 again, but this time it was the external drive FILE that errored, not the OS-resident drive.
In other words, pre-Safe Mode the error said "...because some data in "ZillaHAL" could not be read or written." (ZillaHAL is my OS-X drive).
In Safe, it read, "...because some data in "WinXP Pro.vmem" could not be read or written."
"WinXP Pro.vmem" is the virtual machine file - which basically is a simple Mac volume (folder) containing all of the files to run my XP virtual machine.
Also, this time, a file* did manage to remain on the external drive whereas before, after the error, no file at all remained.
    * a generic icon appears, but it shows a size of 16+GBs. The actual file is 18.13GB - I did manage to shrink it down the other day (from it's previous 25GB).
Well, that's it for now. I'll be away for three days, so don't mind me if I cannot reply back for a spell.

  • I am having trouble with a video.  I have tried to copy it to a flash drive because it is too big to fit on a DVD, it says it is too large for the volumes format.  Please advise.

I have done many DVD's for seniors for graduation so I am familier with Imovie.  I have just finished a projec that is a combination of video, music and stills.  I shared it through idvd.  Now I can't burn it to a dvd because it is too large.  It is too big even for a two sided disk.  I have researched it and i find that blue ray would be big enough.  Does apple offer  blue ray burner?  if so, what is the cost?  I tried another route and took my external hard drive to copy it to a PC.  there computer wouldn't recongize my drive.  I am assuming it is because it is formated for apple.  I tired copying it to a flash drive and and it says that it can't be copied because it is too large for the volume's format.  Suggestions?   PLEASE!!!!!

Could the video be too big because of using too high a resolution?   480p is sufficient for a DVD.  the thread at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5868958?tstart=30
    may be of help.
Apple does not support Blue ray - you have to use a thrid party application like Toast.
To transfer the video to a PC you need a FAT-formatted hard drive (or of course a sufficiently big memory stick).
You could also go via a network, via the cloud (eg Dropbox) or with 'Wetransfer" or similar.
    Geoff.

  • Can't copy .mov files to another drive, get msg

    Hi
I've been trying to copy some .mov files (ext. isn't showing, btw) to another drive. When I do I get this msg, 'The operation can't be completed because the item "blah blah" is in use.
I also have gotten this msg when copying the folder: 'The operation can't be completed because the item ".DS_Store" is in use.
Then I tried creating a new folder to put them in, and I get this msg, "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
QT isn't open. The only apps open are Firefox and Word.
I tried adding both drives to Spotlight's Privacy in System Prefs. No help.
    Any ideas?
    best,
    elmer

    Thanks for the reply!
    What is the 'DS_Store' file?
Am I right thinking Tinker Tool allows you to choose from that list of details on this page <http://www.bresink.com/osx/0TinkerTool/details.html>, and doesn't simply enable them all?
Thanks again, maybe someone else can chime in about why I got the other messages, tho maybe the ds_store was the reason for all.

  • Getting "resource busy" when trying to copy from an external USB drive

Hi, I have an external (Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB) USB drive attached to my MacBook Pro (2009) running 10.6. I am trying to copy the files back to my laptop. After this happens, when I do "ls /Volumes/MyDriveName" I get zero results, nothing. I cannot unmount or eject the USB drive. I have to physically kill power to it, and then plug it back in. Then my MBP recognizes it again, and I can work with it for a short time before I hit this problem again. Copying some files works, but mostly they do not. I hope I have not lost these files.
I ran Disk Utility, and it can't do anything with this drive... it keeps saying it cannot unmount it.
Oddly, I can "ls" every file in every directory on this drive after I reconnect it (i.e. until the problem happens). So it seems like my data is sort of there, at least the directory is.
Is there something more robust than Disk Utility that I can try? Any idea why I cannot eject the disk? And especially, what this "Resource busy" and "in use" message is about? This is coming straight after a reboot, and it only happens for SOME files, so it's not likely to be an obvious usage by some open app.

Hmm, check out this program http://www.hamsoftengineering.com/products/wkm/wkm.html ... it might lead to some more clues. It seems like as soon as you plug it in, the system latches onto it. I'm guessing because it's an iMovie file, which OS X scans for, so all applications have the ability to grab that media that it's messing things up.
Suggestions...copy those files, and rename them.
Check out the app above to see what's holding onto the files.

  • Error -50 when trying to copy files to external hard drive.

When trying to copy files (itunes music folder) to an external hard drive, I get the following message: Copying music failed. An unknown error occurred (-50).
I have tried repairing disk permissions but still get the message. Any thoughts?

    Gary,
A couple of posts referencing "error -50" seem to indicate that the error could result from a corrupted file.
    One from Kappy follows:
    Error -50 Post
One way you could save your music to the other drive would be to do it folder by folder (dragging each artist's folder, to the other drive). I suspect you won't have many (if any) errors doing that, and if you hit the corrupted file, you can come back to that folder and see which one is bad. You could also try to drag groups of artists folders to the drive if you had quite a few. One note: If you save your files this way, you won't be saving the library, which contains all the playlists you've created...you'll have to recreate them.
If you needed that music down the road, you could just do a File>Import from iTunes....
    Hope this helps,
    Bob

  • Why won't the copying action stop? How do i quit it so i can shut down? Items i tried to copy to either my hard drive or my USB memory are not copying - why? And now can't quit them either!

I have a Western Digital My Book hard drive which i use to store my media/data/back up. I tried to transfer some files on my desk top to it yestrday and it was taking forever so decided to stop it. Now it just shows under the Copying box, stopping but it isn't? I tried then to down load the same images t my USB memory stick and now that is doing the same. I wonder if i is to do with upgrading to Mavericks as no problems before?
I have check my WD My book on another computer and thankfully all mmedia is still in tack!
How can i quit this copying so i can shut down my computer?
Any ideas as to why items are not copying to external memories and what if anything can i do to get it copying correctly again?
I really need to back up my work by tonight - help! Any suggestions there too?

option discovered in preferences. Really this and any feature that moves deletes or edits a users data should as far as possible be OFF BY DEFAULT. It shouldn't by default and without the users specific say do this dangerous and unnecessary thing without even letting the user know what it's doing!!! And then cause me a few hours (as i'm new to mac) searching for the option so as to switch it off. If i hadn't noticed the status cage declaring that it was copying files then i might never have twigged that this insane thing was occurring. And if i hadn't of noticed i would have been left maintaining the contents of the folder i copied the files to, the folder which as far as i was informed and so believed was also the location of the music files i was playing. How does Apple justify this 'genius' piece of software non-design? Surely it will hurt no one if this was off by default for new users - overall at least i dare say it would cause a lot less distress in the future for the unsuspecting public at large. Thanks for the support.

  • IPhoto: can't copy my library to another drive

I'm trying to back up (and ultimately move) my 94GB iPhoto library to an external harddrive and just before it finishes copying I get a message that says, "The Finder can't complete the operation because some date in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written. (Error code - 36).  Is there a way for me to find what data might be corrupt so I can move my Library?  My Library is currently on an external drive Passport drive.

Sorry, I don't think I was clear;  the source drive is Windows FAT32 and has the iPhoto library, the destination drive is a Lacie formatted with Mac OS Extended and is empty.
I haven't been successful after four attempts to copy by dragging library to destination drive.

  • Trying to copy an item to usb drive gives error item is busy

I purchased an iomega 500gb external usb drive for my powermac G4 mirror doors but it was unusably slow due to the mac only having usb 1.
Today I purchased a Belkin 5 port PCI USB 2 card and connected it up.
The Mac recognised the card immediately and the drive when connected. It will play videos that are already on the drive but when I try to copy a video on the computer to the drive it refuses to copy saying that the item is busy.
I really need to copy about 200GB of dv files to the drive for backup so any suggestions please - Thanks

Some (most?) USB drives come formatted to FAT32.
Reformat it (Disk Utility Partitions, and click on "Options..." also)
Or get a FireWire drive that would be bootable as well, and faster (and much much lower cpu overhead).

  • How to have lenovo backup put on another drive

Hi i just intalled a msata drive.  the lenovo backup was created on the SSD and is using space i could use better.  I have the original drive in the laptop, would it be possible to have the back up made on the 500G drive rather than on my SDD ?

I don't think you can move it.  The image you posted indicated that you have already made your recovery media.  If you have done so, you can delete that R&R partition and add the space to C:
If you right click on it (Q: usually) are you offered an option to delete and add the space to C:?
If you haven't already made recovery media something is wrong - you shouldn't get that pop-up error.
Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing here, what partitions do you see in explorer and disk management?  Which one are you referring to as the R&R partition?

  • Error message trying to copy files to second hard drive

we have a project, about 100 gig or so, that we want to copy from the external drive it is on, to a second external drive.
the process stopped after a while, with only about 60 gig transfered, with an error message saying "finder error code -36 can't read or write" a particular file (untittled2-7) or something similar...
the file itself appears to play fine form the original drive, and its about 2.7 gig.
any ideas what could be causing this, and what we could do to make it transfer across?
    cheers
    hugh

Yeah it's pretty easy if you pay attention to the top area of the window.. it will tell you what will happen if you click GO... Just select the files, right click on one of them to select Media manager. Then select copy, and a destination... read that summary to make sure what you're getting ready to do is what you want to do... it's pretty straightforward if you read that summary.

  • Permissions on backups.backupdb

My son's external WD 1TB HD that he used with Time Machine for his backups crashed. He sent it to me and using Newer Technology's Universal Drive Adapter, I am able to get it booted and see all of his files. I was able to copy his folders with his work product (he is an animator using a Mac Pro and MacBook Pro) but when I tried to copy "backups.backupdb" it tells me that the file cannot be copied because it is permissions based. Yet, it does not ask for a password. Is there something special that needs to be done to copy the backups.backupdb file?

If you wish to clone a copy of the TM backup drive do not attempt to simply copy files. Backups.backupd is the entire TM backup folder. It contains everything TM has backed up to the drive. Because TM uses specialize file links you simply cannot copy the folder. Instead you should clone the entire drive's contents to another properly partitioned and formatted drive. Use the Restore option of Disk Utility. The TM backup drive is the source device while the drive to which you are cloning is the target/destination device.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive to which you are cloning.
Source means the TM backup drive.
