Trying to copy VHS tape using PINNACLE MOVIE BOX to FCE 4

Hello,
New to FCE and trying to transfer VHS tapes to clean up and movie them.
The salesperson in the local Apple Store suggesting using FCE and Pinnacle MovieBox. I connect an VCR using the RCA cables to the Pinnacle, then Firewaire to my MBP. Using FCE as per instructions and forums, Capture and hit "Now".
It starts to transfer and then stops with "Locating TIme Code Break Press Esc to Stop". Then stops.
I've tried setting clips, but get other errors, about not able to find the start points.
It's a basic non-audio VHS I would like to transfer from start to 2 hour finish.
Imovie 08 works, but can I transfer it in to FCE with out loss of quality. THe sales guy felt I should use FCE.
Can it be done, am I doing something wrong. I basically want to transfer it while I attend to something else. Do not want to watch all these VHS tapes.
Thanks,
Art

Hi,
when you use that DV converter setup, is your device already connected and working?
Can you see it listed using the system profile under the firewire devices?
I have a Canopus device which does the same kind of video conversions and it works fine on FCE4 using the DV PAL converter (in my case I work with PAL).
Have you tried direct connection with the firewire port of your mac (that's if you are using some sort of chain connection through a disk firewire hub)?
I have noticed my Canopus did have some trouble when it was connected through a firewire hub on an external disk. Now it's on a dedicated firewire hub and it works fine.
Regards,
Armando.

  • How to dub (copy) VHS tapes to DVDs (DVR670KU)

Josh @ Toshiba Tech Support (800-631-3811) gave these instructions which worked for us.  Note: first VHS tape we tried ejected immediately.  Second VHS tape we tried stayed in and dubbing worked.
    - turn DVR670KU on
    - press DVD button
    - press Input Select button and choose "L1"
    - insert blank DVD
    - press Rec Mode button and choose mode (ex: SP)
    - press VCR button
    - insert VHS tape
    - press Play button
    - press Pause button
    - press Dubbing button
    - unit automatically begins VCR to DVD dubbing and displays "DB" on front panel
    - press Stop button when done

Note that I'm not Josh. I'm not a Toshiba employee.
Are you saying that you followed the steps in the original post, up to and including
"Press Dubbing button" and the VHS tape did not begin playing? If so, did you get
any kind of notification on the screen? The VHS tape should have been in pause mode,
and should start playing once the DVD Dubbing button is pressed on the remote.
Are you trying to dub a commercial tape? (which you can't do with the Toshiba DVR620 and
    DVR670)
What type of recordable DVD are you using? DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW? And it's
    either blank or unfinalized?
Can you play the tape when you are not in a DVD dubbing situation? That is, just insert
the VHS tape, press the VCR button on the remote, then press Play on the remote?

  • Trying to import dv tape using Canon ZR10, but it's very stuttery

This is my first attempt at importing a dv tape from my (yes very old) Canon ZR10.  But it's not happening; the tape becomes digitalized, stutters and then freezes.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, that IS an old camera. Mine died, and I have a 25 that can't rewind, as well as a 45 and 850 that work great.
    But that's beside the point.
ALL of them have difficulty importing unless they are the ONLY FireWire device connected.
Well, not consistently.  But I can only import to the system disk. None of them would import to an external FW drive. The 45 and 850 won't even tolerate a FW drive connected to a second FW400 port, let alone being part of a chain. I think the 850 won't even tolerate a FW drive connected even if it is powered off.
Since my ZR10 no longer works, I can't state emphatically which category it fit, but the simple solution was to disconnect all FW devices except the camera and import to the system drive.
Just to be clear. I could copy the files onto an external FW drive after import and edit them there.  I just can't import to any drive but the system drive with any of my ZR cameras.
Funny thing is, when I upgraded to a new i5 quad iMac last month, it only has ONE FW800 port.  I found that I can connect the ZR45 into the 400 port on the first FW800 drive and it works just fine. It just wouldn't tolerate being chained on a FW400 drive, or connected to the FW400 port on the old computer with my Ext drives connected to the FW800 port. Strange, but at least it works.
Btw. If I recall, the ZR10 can be used as an AV/DV convertor if you have any old VHS tapes to import -- you just can't do it with FCPX. It won't recognize input from a device it can't control. I use QTPro 7, but FCE will work, if you can find a copy. Maybe iMovie would work, and then import iMove events.

  • Copying VHS tapes to Hard Drive for editing in iMovie

OK, so I have old home videos on VHS tapes; I was going to burn them all to DVD, but found that they cannot be edited and I understand ripping them will degrade the quality (and we're working with VHS -- not the best quality to begin with!) So, I learned there is a way "analog digital capture" where I can transfer the VHS tapes onto a hard drive, then edit in iMovie.
I know I could pay for a transfer house to do it, but I think it would be wiser financially to invest in the device I need to do it myself.
I don't entirely understand what I need to buy, or how to do it, does anyone know what I am asking and what to do? Thank you so much!

I am using a JVC DR MV-150 VHS DVD recorder which dubs directly.
The results look better than the originals.
Some problems with "finalizing" the DVDs, but I managed to push a series of buttons and got there. It is not what JVC says in their manual and found something on line which was wrong as well, but a combination got me there.
It is one touch, load in tape, load in blank DVD and push dubbing. Machine initializes the DVD and then transfers, at the end you go through a process to "finalize" the DVD and done.
Cost me $200 at Sma's Club.
You can also take semi full tapes and pause the dubbing and put in a new VHS tape and record a "New" chapter.
All in all I like it. It has better quality than going from VHS to computer, I assume they have some sort of a chip in the machine to make this better.
    my 2 cents

  • Can't shutdown MacBook Pro system trying to copy from desktop, and also move something on desktop. Can I force a shutdown in the hope of rebooting will fix the problem?

How do I force shutdown my computer. I am hoping by rebooting I will be able to clear this problem

Doing what nbar says is dangerous, so I recommend you to try other steps before.
First, press Alt, Command and Esc keys, so the Force Quit window will show up. Choose Finder and relaunch it, so the copy process will stop. Then, you will be able to turn off the Mac.
If it doesn't work, press Control, Command and Eject keys to restart. If nothing works, do what nbar says

  • Buying correct type of DVD for copying VHS tapes:

Will my MacBookPro -- late 08, (model 5.1) burn DVDRW (rewrite) or do I have to stick with the one-shot DVD? I prefer the RW but store clerk said if I open package I can't return and exhange for the one-shot type. Help.

DVD-RW media is useful for certain applications (read: short-term data storage), but I would not recommend them for video purposes. They are not as stable over time and will not have the life that good quality DVD-R media have. They also cost more than DVD-R media and there is also some question of how well (or not) they will play in ordinary DVD players.
May I suggest +Verbatim DataLife Plus DVD-R+ or DVD+R media. They are reasonably priced, are available in silver or white inkjet-printable versions; single-layer and dual-layer. I have been using them for years and not one has failed to burn or play.

  • Making movies from VHS tapes

  • VHS tapes drop-out while importing

Im importing VHS tapes to iMovie and without fail, every so many minutes they drop-out and the screen goes blue, though the tape hasnt stopped playing. Is there some way to stop this? Do I just need a new box? I have a Pinnacle Movie Box DV from a few years ago, and Id prefer not to spend a fortune!

Sometimes it is just the poor quality of the original VHS tapes, especially if the tape was recorded at extremely long play. I think the code was EP rather than SP or LP.
I have recorded ALL my VHS tapes to miniDV so that I would not cause further degradation as I tried to import VHS footage. Probably around 100 hours of miniDV tapes. Most of the tapes were ok with occasional blips of dropped frames.
However, one of my son's baseball games was recorded by someone who made copies of his original tape and gave all the team members copies. It is about 14 years old, and had become absolutely terrible with multiple video drop-outs. I copied the entire game to minDV, and then imported that into iMovie.
I spent a lot of time editing out the bad video drop-outs. Most of them were ok to lose, but some had important audio in the midst of the blue screen. It was tedious editing, and my iMovie quickly bloated up to 100 GB of space. Yes, that is correct......100 GB. Fortunately, I was making the movie on an external drive and had enough space.
I did the final version by sharing the iMovie as Full-Quality QuickTime movie and making a new iMovie with the quicktime one--which ended up being only 8GB!!!
So, you will have to decide if it is worth it to edit those sections on a nearly frame-by-frame basis. Is it worth the time and effort and large size of the movie, or can creatively put some good video clips over the bad to preserve the good audio segments?

  • Importing VHS tapes into iMovie

I have several VHS movies that I am importing into iMovie from a VCR to a Pinnacle Movie Box DV which is hooked up to my computer. The box is a few years old and I am having a problem. I cant simply start the import and walk away because without fail every so often the video screen in iMovie goes blue and while the tape is still playing, nothing is being imported. I have to stop the tape rewind it to where it stopped being imported, and start again. This is VERY frustrating!!! Is it my box, or iMovie???

    Hi
My Guess. There might be drop outs on Your VHS tapes and Your A/D-box stops
    importing then.
I payed up for a more costly way. Canopus ADVC-300. But this costs.
Alt. I used was to connect my miniDV tape Camera and download 1 hour at a time
to tape and use this. The tape has been pre-recorded with eg a wall so that I get
    an unbroken time-code on it.
one hour passes are better than constantly supervicing.
iMovie is more accepting to drop-outs than FinalCut Express or pro (my experience)
Setting iMovie to import without breaking up in individual clips works better
for me. (Material from VHS/VCRs doesn't carry the information that can divide
    into separat clips anyhow)

  • Importing VHS Tape

I'm importing a VHS tape using a DataVideo DAC-200 dv converter. while importing, there is no audio coming from the screen showing the tape's progress during the import. I am not sure if this is because the tape has no audio (which I highly doubt) or if some settings are messed up, or if it just won't play the audio during the import. It is importing right now

Let me assume that these movies are important to you and that you want the best quality possible.
The DataVideo DAC-200 dv is a good video converter (now discontinued).
I tried many converters but found the Canopus ADVC300 to be the best.
With the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out (just like the DAC-200). It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09). The software that comes with the Canopus ADVC300 has some incredible filters that can improve the picture as well as the sound. I sometimes use it to reduce the background "hiss" found in some tapes. Well worth the price.
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC300/index.php
iMovie 09 uses single-field processing. This means every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
Your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels, same aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 will give you audio when importing.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination.

  • VHS Tape Capture to Powerbook

I'm trying to copy VHS HI8 tapes, played thru my Sony CCD-TRV62 camera, via S Video cable to a Powerbook OS 10.5.8.
What is best method for video capture? Anything built in? Will IMovie do the capture? Or is another 3rd party program better? (Will then edit later in IMovie.)
    Thanks!

You will need an analog-digital converter like the Canopus ADVC-110. Connect the s-video + audio outputs of your TRV62 to the analog inputs of the converter; then connect the FireWire out from the converter to the FireWire port on your PB. Then you can use iMovie to capture the video as you play it back in your TRV62.
As an alternative, you could use a miniDV camcorder that supports analog-digital passthrough instead of a dedicated converter like the Canopus box.
But in any case you need a hardware device to convert your analog VHS or Hi8 video to DV before you can edit it in iMovie or any other program.

  • Audio quality in video imported from VHS tapes

    Hi All,
I am trying to import old videos on VHS tapes, using a Canopus converter. The video is importing into iMovie just fine, but the audio has a loud buzzing sound that covers up the actual audio and is very annoying. Is there a way to extract the audio so I can clean it up using Sound Soap, then return the cleaned up version to iMovie?
    I am using iMovie '09, version 8.0.5.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Please give as much step by step detail as possible for both approaches. In the iMovie "Help" it said to extract audio using advanced tools, but I couldn't find a command in any of the advanced tools to do that.
    Thanks.

Is there a way to extract the audio so I can clean it up using Sound Soap
iMovie 06 has some good filters for that.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Final Cut Express (or iMovie 06) will give you better quality but it won't solve the buzzing noise. I also suspect a grounding problem.

  • FCP Crashing When Printing to Tape Using Audio Follows Video Setting

I'm trying to Print to Tape using the Audio Follows Video setting from FCP. I am using a Sony DSR-11 Deck and a Mac Pro. I was able to Print to Tape successfully earlier today, and I have done it successfully many times before. Every time I try to Print to Tape with the Audio Follows Video setting, FCP crashes. Actually, every time I play audio from the timeline using the Audio Follows Video setting, FCP crashes. I have deduced that the problem must be with the Audio Follows Video setting, but I'm not sure what to do to correct the problem. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Well, what version of FCP are you running?
    Final Cut Studio 5
How is your media stored? Number of hard drives, how full are they, ect?
I have two hard drives. One is 250GB the other is 750GB. I have my applications on the 250GB drive. All of my media is on the 750GB drive. My computer is brand new, so I haven't even come close to filling the drives.
What is the format of the media you are trying to send out to the DSR?
I'm going Firewire out of the Mac Pro to the DSR11 to a Mini-DV tape.
Have you tried doing a crash record?
I would rather not do a crash record if at all possible. I know that is a back up option, but I also know that my system is capable of working properly.
I really appreciate you trying to help me out on this.

  • A problem capturing VHS tapes into FCE via Miglia Directors Cut

I am trying to capture vhs recordings via Miglia Directors Cut into FCE. FCE does not seem to be recognising or capturing. The footage will be visible in the capture preview window but when capture is started nothing appears in the main capture window and the preview goes back to No preview available.
The VHS deck is connected to the directors cut via composite cables, and the Directors Cut is connected via firewire to my G5. Does this in itself create a problem?

Use the FCE Easy Setup called *DV-PAL DV Converter* if you are working with PAL video (DV-NTSC DV Converter if you are working with NTSC video).
Also make sure all settings in the Miglia unit are correct for PAL video.
Also, I have found it helpful to have the video running before you click the Capture Now button.
One other thing, the Miglia Directors Cut spec sheet says that it is not compatible with the PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro. I do not understand why this should be unless it has something to do with the unit being powered by the FW bus. Do you happen to have the optional power supply for your unit?
    +Macintosh Compatibility+

    +• Mac OS 9.1+, Mac OS X+
    +• NOT compatible with PowerMacs G5 PCI-Express and MacPro+
