Trying to create bootable disc with time machine + archive & install

Okay... to recap, have been having a bunch of buggy issues on my Mac Pro and I determined via a previous thread here (see below) that the best approach was to put in a fresh Leopard system via an archive-and-install.
However, my current startup drive is only 80GB, with a mere 4GB currently free. Not enough for A&I, I am sure.
My plan was to do this:
* make a bootable clone copy of the current start up drive
* then do an A&I on the clone, and try using that as the startup.
so I tried - I used superduper to make a bootable clone, and it worked fine, I can start up from the clone.
however, I couldn't do an A&I install on the clone because it didn't have the correct GUID permission.
so, I reformatted the clone - I partitioned it using Disk Util -
now I am running time machine to copy from the current startup to the clone -
but I have a premature feeling that time machine will only create a backup thingie of the startup drive, unlike superDuper, it will not give me a bootable clone that I can then work with.
any suggestions?
if I partition the clone drive & put a GUID partition on it, then user superduper to copy everything on it, would the GUID partition still be there - and I can then archive & install to the clone?
am open for any ideas!
w
Not sure if this is the correct way to reference a previous thread:
<http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2041933&tstart=0>

thank you - here's my question regarding that:
1 - I partition a drive using the GUID scheme.
2 - I then use superDuper to copy everything to this drive.
3 - does the new drive STILL maintain the GUID partition scheme?
Unless it still maintains the GUID partition scheme, then I can't do the archive & install on it - as I found out, the hard way!
alternatively...
if I
1 - use the installer to put a clean copy of leopard on a blank drive
2 - then plan to use the "migration" feature to copy from the original startup drive to the new drive with leopard newly-installed...
3 - is it possible to use the migration feature once I have restarted from a hard drive? or can migration only be used in the actual install process, when I have booted from the install disc?
(I ask this second question because when I boot from the install discs, my SATA drives do NOT show up anywhere, they only get mounted when I boot from a proper hard drive. Possibly a firewire drive would - but I don't seem to have anymore firewire 1394 externals, it's all USB and eSATA...)

  • Anyone tried the 250GB WD Passport with Time Machine?

Costco has the 250GB Passports for $139, and am thinking about getting one to use exclusively for Time Machine with my MacBook Pro.
Does anyone have any experience with this drive as a Time Machine device? MBP has enough bus current to power the drive without an adapter, right?
I'd prefer a G Drive Mini (FW800/400/USB) or OWC triple interface, but they are 2-3 times more expensive.

Unfortunately I have also given up on using the 250GB WD Passport drive. After MANY days, I couldn't decide if the progress bar was stuck or copying 1 byte per hour! It is excruciatingly slow to be used for Time Machine backups. I have also switched to an older (big) OWC Mercury 250GB firewire drive and the files seem to be transferring faster.
BTW, has anyone noticed if its a Leopard thing that files take much longer to copy onto external drives?

  • Back up Mac Server with Time Machine Server installed on the same Time Machine Server

I want to back up several Workstations (“Workstations 1-4” in diagram below) and a Mac OS X Server (“MacMini Server” in diagram below) that runs “Time Machine Server” on that same “Time Machine Server.”
    Is this possible?
The MacMini server doesn’t seem to find the “Time Machine Server” for backups. I read that this is due to the fact that Time Machine backups via network are organized in another way than “normal” Time Machine backups are.
MacOS server is running MacOS 10.8.5 with server app v2.2.1(169)-
    workstations are running 10.10.1, 10.9.5 and 10.8.4

The Time Capsule and Time Machine will automatically keep backups for each Mac separate.
A user on one Mac will not be able to "see" the backups of the other Mac.
You can add a few more Macs if you wish. 4 or 5 Macs would probably be a practical limit, depending on the size of the hard drive in the Time Capsule.

  • Restore with time machine

My hard drive in my imac died and i installed a new hard drive. I loaded snow leopard and tried to restore my system with time machine. My photos don't show up in iphoto but when i click on the images in finder they show up there. When i try to drag them into iphoto i get a message that it is a unreadable file. How can I restore my system so it was the same before my hard drive died?

    For help troubleshooting TM see:
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • HT201250 I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?

I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive.

  • I cannot see my photos in iphoto library - I tried to restore with Time Machine and that doubled the number of photos (copies) but I still cannot see the images - the events are there but no thumbnails although the number of pics per event is correct...

Can someone help me see my pictures again in iphoto? 3 weeks ago while uploading a video from iphoto to Facebook, my events thumbnails all disappeared and were replaced by black squares - the event names and number of pics in each remain but when I click on the event, I only get squares where the pics should be - when I click those squares, I get  a square with a triangle  and an exclamation mark in middle.
Apple had emailed me about defective disks in iMacs so I took mine to the Apple Store and they replaced my HD then reinstalled from my backup via Time Machine - I still cannot see my pics! I tried to reinstall from an earlier Time Machine date - that copied everything and now my HD has double the amount of data but I still cannot see my pictures!
I would be thankful for any guidance on how to retrieve my pictures...
    Thank you.

Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.
Details are here:   http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html   The same info applies for Mavericks and Yosemite.   If you are saying that this is a "no go".....where are you getting stuck?  What error messages do you see?

Time Machine spends hours partially backing up and then fails with "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup due to a network problem."  I've tried various suggestions I've seen on the forum but nothing has worked.  TIme Machine worked fine for the last two years and just suddenly started having this problem every time.  The only thing that was a little different is that the computer was off for a week while on vacation and then I added a large amount (20 GB) of photos. Now the requested backup size is 82GB, which is large, and process proceeds very slowly for 2-3 hours before failing with the message mentioned.  I have more than enough available backup storage space for it.  Before failing, Time Machine has backed up no more than 12GB or so of the backup.  It fails during different files each time.
I've turned off the computer sleep feature, and I've checked that the NAS is set to never automatically power down. I normally backup over Wi-Fi, but I've also tried connecting to Ethernet and it still has the same problem.  It's odd because I also have a MacBook Pro that is still backing up fine to the same NAS using the MacBook's Time Machine.
I am using an iMac with OS X 10.6.8 and an Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 NAS.
I have system logs that I can share if helpful.  The logged messages vary a bit from run to run, but here are some messages that I've been seeing:
I always get this message near the beginning of the backup:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
I've gotten this messsage a number of times:
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.

That looks like a problem was found with the file system (data) on the TM disk.  I don't know the details, but OSX tried to recover it from the journal, and found extra data on the drive.    Likely a result of the incompatibility mentioned above.

Something caused a disconnect.  Can't tell from the log what it was.
I doubt it's a problem with something in OSX being damaged or corrupted, but reinstalling OSX isn't a major hassle, so might be worth a try.
To be incompatible with Snow Leopard, this NAS must be at least a couple of years old.  It may be beginning to fail.
Contact the maker.  See if there's an update to make it compatible with Snow Leopard.  If so, that might fix it.
If not, or if that doesn't fix it, see if they have any diagnostics that will shed any light.

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • Partitioning a disc already in use - for use with Time Machine

I just bought the upgrade to 10.5 Leopard, and I want to use my external disc (LaCie 500GB - a couple of months old) to back up using time-machine. The thing is, I've already been using it to backup manually, and to be sure, I want to keep that possibility.
But when I open TimeMachine, it says it will delete all contents and format my external disc if I want to use it as my TimeMachine-drive. Could I solve this by partitioning it using disc utilities so that, say 150GB's is for TimeMachine and the rest is for manual backup and temporary backup? Or will this delete the other contents I already have on the disc (about 200GB) that I want to keep there?

I had nothing but nightmares with my LaCie 500GB drive and Time Machine. I had it partitioned, and I could never go back to previous backups to restore a file. After finally reformatting the drive back to a singe partition, I got it to work. But then a month later the drive gave out and I almost lost 250GB or my media. DIskWarrior saved that catastrophe. I ended up getting the drive repaired. LaCie would not replace it, even though it was only 3 months old. Other people with LaCie drives have had issues with Time Machine also. I went back to using SuperDuper and doing scheduled backups with a new Beyond Micro drive I purchased. I don't trust this Lacie drive anymore for backups, especially it's partitioned.

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

  • Trying to undo an inadvisable system config with Time Machine...

Basically, I'm trying to restore my entire Leopard system back to the way it was at 10am this morning.
Today, I made a lot of unconventional configurations to my apache2 that I'm not comfortable with - now, I want it gone but I'm having trouble with Time Machine.
After clicking Time Machine, I scrolled back to 10am this morning (before I did all the stupid stuff) and selected the entire "Macintosh HD" from the finder window and then clicked "Restore" - but strangely, it is asking me what folder I would like to dump my restore into...I don't want to dump it into a folder, I would like it restored.
Is there something I misunderstand about Time Machine?
Will it not restore my entire system like that?

No, you can't restore the volume you're running from.
To restore your entire system, see #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
