Trying to decide what mobo to get...MSI i875-FIS2R or Intel D875PBZLK

greetings, I'm building a new sys soon and I'm wanting to purchase a 875chipset so I can use the 800mhz fsb P4 chips. Below is what I had in mind.
CPU: P4 3.0Ghz 800mhz
Mobo: MSI i875-FIS2R or Intel D875PBZLK
Ram: Mushkin 1GB PC3200 Level One (2x512MB) Dual Black PCB 232 Rated @ CAS 2-3-2
HD: SATA WD Raptor 36GB 10,000rpm
Video: ATI 9800PRO (which i already have hehe)
OS: Wink2k Pro
Hopefully some of you guys can assist me here. The only reason why I'm troubles deciding between the msi board and intel board is price. The intel mobo is a bit cheaper but it seems like the msi mobo offers a bigger package. Is the MSI board really worth the 180$ retail? I know thats kind of a stupid question considering this is a MSI forum. Will it be a pain in the ass to update the bios? I'm shooting for 18k on 3dmark01. I noticed REILLY's setup did it(nice score). My current 3dmark01 score is 14k (sig below). Does the MSI 875 support ram higher then PC3200? My last question, there is about 100000 different types of ram modules out there, what is a good choice for a gamer? Mushkin, corsair, geil ect.
OH ya, what kind of PSU should be looking for? Right now I'm running a Enermax 420watt psu
thanks for the help

i am trying to decide if i should get the MBP or the MB

well im gonna use it a lot for school and for playing
games and editing my own movies/videos
The MB is a great school machine, for almost everything except serious video editing, 3D CG, or PC games; and that's pretty much what everyone is going to say.
Everyone will also mention that if you don't want to be disappointed with game or video performance, you'll need an MBP with 7200 RPM drive and at least a gig of RAM (although more than a gig can sometimes decrease performance a little, so check the benchmarks for the games you like and the editors you'll use). You'll be giving up some portability (form factor, battery life, case construction), but you'll also be getting a card slot in return, which could be very useful for the video work (when the cards start shipping) to keep firewire devices on different channels, or tune in direct DTV and HDTV feeds.
Between the MBP-15 and MBP-17, there is a significant difference for video work with the extra firewire 800 jack and dual-layer superdrive on the 17. If you're going to be moving large video files over a LAN, it also might be worth looking into gigabit ethernet routers. However, if you're not comfortable with dumping loads of money into video hardware and software, then the 17 is probably overkill, although at my config, the 17 was actually cheaper than the 15, go figure, so I got the 17 anyway to save money.
Hope I'm not too redundant on this, but the wisdom here is fairly conventional, as Apple has intentionally added the "pro" moniker to emphasize these differences.

  • I'm trying to decide what to buy either air port or time capsule. I want a hard drive to save my pictures documents etc. but I want to be able to delete it off my computer but it still stay on my hard drive any advice?

need to decide what to get for a hard drive

Any hard disk drive in a USB enclosure will work with either the Time Capsule or the Extreme.
Don't use Time Machine for archival purposes - that's not what it is designed to do. It's strictly a backup utility.

  • I am trying to decide what gig i need. I want to use the Ipad for my books for college.

I need to know what gig to get... I want to use the ipad for my college textbooks to take them to class on it. How many etextbooks would the ipad hold?

Caveat to the above: books that have a lot of pictures or graphics can be quite large; many megabytes. If you can find out from your college program what books you'll need, check to see if 1) they're available; many textbook publishers have yet to provide textbooks as e-books and 2) if they are available (from one of the e-book providers; you can use Kindle, Nook and Google books on your iPad in addition to Apple's iBooks) how large they are. Then you can add the sizes up, figure out what else you might want on your iPad (movies, for instance, take up a lot of space) and determine what capacity you'll need. When it doubt, buy more capacity than you think you'll need; an iPad can't be expanded later if you run short.
    Regards.

  • I am a college student trying to decide if I should get a laptop of an Ipad 3 for college work. Which one would be better suited?

Please specify pros and cons if possible.

Other posters here made good points. A laptop is pretty much a necessity.
Many colleges require a laptop for class, so you might want to check with the school. My younger son, starting his junior year in college, recently got an e-mail saying he must have a laptop for class. Other groups were required to buy a netbook directly from his university last year with pre-loaded programs.
You might also be required to have microsoft word, excel, etc. as my sons have to. If you get a laptop, and need/want microsoft word, etc., you might want to wait until you get to school and find two others in the same position with same type of laptop (pc or mac) and split the family pack. You'll save a lot of money.
Also, neither an ipad or a netbook (they all crawl and do not come with much memory - we have two) has a dvd drive, and that could make a big difference to you.
An ipad is fun and very portable. If you can get both, good for you. Enjoy!
We were pc users until less than two years ago. Our computers were fried by a microsoft security update. We now have two imacs and a macbbok pro. They are so much easier - no more viruses frying hard drives - at least three each on our son's laptops, replacing $80.00 adapters, etc. We have saved money because of this. My older son (just graduated) has the 13" macbook pro 2010 and still loves it - incredibly fast, reliable and long lasting battery. We do not plan on using pc's any more.
Many countries have the student discount where on a 13"macbook pro you get a $100. gift card for the app/itunes store and another $100. off the price of the macbook pro (so $1099.00). So when you're deciding on a laptop, you might take this student pricing into account. You must buy directly from an Apple store, Apple online or your Apple approved college bookstore. You don't need the retina display version, the added cost, or the additional weight of a larger model. With savings, you'll actually be paying $999.00. Also, if you buy apps for your macbook pro, those apps can be used on up to five authorized family imacs or macbook pros. Given the prices of some apps, that can be  a great savings.
On the other hand, pc laptops keep improving (?) and might have sales because at at this point, they want to sell off the windows 7 versions before the new windows os comes out.
Whatever your decision, enjoy your new computer and college.

  • Trying to decide what 17" MBP screen to buy ...

but I can't find any info that compares the pros and cons of each?

it's easy to understand the difference. think of it this way: the actual physical size of the screen is the same between both models, that obviously doesn't change as they are both physically 17" displays. but if you have the higher res display, it is capable of displaying far more pixels within that same space.. so, the pixels have to be smaller at that higher res. it means that you will have a bigger workspace because more stuff fits into the same physical screen space, but as a consequence, everything will look physically smaller. text, icons, everything - you can fit more of it on to the screen but it all is actually smaller in size.
basically, with the high res display, you have exactly the same desktop space as a 23" apple cinema display because they both go to 1920x1200 pixels. but because the 17" is physically quite a bit smaller, this same display is squished into a smaller space so it all just has to be smaller. for some people this is a big problem because if your eyesight isn't great, text is going to be harder to read at that res. for other people it's awesome because it means you can work with big layouts, big windows and have a much more expansive workspace.
the thing to remember is that 1920x1200 is just the max resolution of this display, it's not a law set in stone. there's nothing stopping you from setting it to 1600x1050 in the monitor control panel, which is the max res of the non high res display. of course if you were always going to use the machine in this mode, then it's a waste of money to go for the high res model. but, if sometimes using 1900x1200 would be good for you, you always have the option to scale it back at times when you want text or whatever to be less small. such as, watching DVDs or working in FCP, you'd use the highest res.. and if you were having trouble reading text when word processing, just switch to 1600x1050.
personally I would go for the high res, I wish it was an option when I got my MBP because I work with logic pro and I can use as much desktop real estate as I can get.

  • Newbie: trying to decide which product

I'm a C# dot net developer, but I'm looking for an alternative to Silverlight, so I'm currently learning Macromedia Flash MX 2004, but someone told me that the Actionscript version is outdated. Now I'm trying to decide what product to upgrade to.
I not only build internet/intranet sites for a company, but also occasionally create sites for friends and family.
I'm looking ultimately to introduce impressive graphics, but also extend the development using Flash for database access, AJAX, form handling etc. Also, correct me if I'm mistaken, but I was led to believe that Flash overcomes many of the browser incompatibility issues that us conventional web developers are faced with?
So given what I'm trying achieve, can someone comment/recommend that I start using Flash CS4 or perhaps suggest using Flex Builder 3.0 ?
    Thanks.

Flash Professional is best for timeline based animations. Flex is better for real applications, and is comparable to Silverlight.
You are correct, Flex apps run in the Flash Player plugin in the browser, so you will avoid most of the browser compatibility issues.
Why are you moving away from Silverlight? Do you think it will survive as a technology?
Do you think .NET and C# programming will still be in demand for a while?

  • New to Apple - Need help.  Here is the breakdown. I just got my wife a iPhone 4s and I'm trying to decide how to set it up. Should she get her own Apple ID or use mine? This for some reason is very confusing to me.

Here is the breakdown.  I just bought my wife a new iPhone 4s and I'm trying to decide how to set it up for her.  Should she have her own Apple ID or use mine?  If she uses my Apple ID, will that cause issues with iMessage - say when I'm chatting with someone else and vice a versa. Will our messages show up on each others devices?  How will a FaceTime call work?  Will the video call come across both our devices (ipad also)?
Just some information that might be of note:
I have the new iPhone 4s, iPad2 and one iTunes account - the iTunes account is my Apple ID which I use also for the iCloud (I think...it's getting murky
What am I trying to achieve is having the ability for me (iphone, ipad) and my wife (iphone) to be able to share and sync just music, apps, movies, etc...  I have Google Calender and I have not made up my mind yet if we will share a contacts list (I have large business list).  Also this might be of note, I most likely will be using iTunes on my LG LCD TV (appleTV) at some point in the near future.
So, basically I'm confused, which is not unusual for me.  If I'm thinking to much inside the box, please let me know and feel free to offer up any suggestions.  Even if the suggestion is I'm not asking the right questions.  Of course if that is your suggestion, then please tell me the question.  And an answer would be nice to.
    Thanks.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

  • I'm trying to decide whether to buy ipad or cheaper tablet.  What is retina display and what is diff betw ipad and mini with only wifi? What is mini missing?

I'm trying to decide on tablet to buy -- what is the difference between mini and ipad?  What is retinal display?  Why do some have wifi only and some have wifi cellular?  Why would I need cellular?
I keep hearing that apple computers don't pick up viruses like pc (of which I have had my fair share) so that is why I am considering -- but there are some really attractive deals for cheaper tablets.

A simple answer to a loaded question?  Not here!
    1.     For starters, I can't recommend the newest iPad AIr or iPad Mini.  The previous versions worked perfectly though if you want to go the Apple route.  That alone will save you a few bucks.  Best Buy undercuts Apple prices by a few $$ and has bonus sales around this time of year.
    2.   You get what you pay for.  I like the Samsung Galaxy Tabs a lot.  Good hardware and software.  App store has plenty to offer.  You also have size options like you do with Apple.   Since I have the Galaxy S3 phone, the Galaxy tabs are very familiar.  The Surface (smaller one) is big for a tablet, it works great, but is subject to the frailties that plague PCs to some degree.   I don't like the keyboard, but do like the kickstand.   I don't know about the availability of Apps for the Surface, I think it may be a major downside to the device.  The Surface is not cheaper than iPad either.  As for the cheaper Tablets, they will be in the landfill before Apple introduces a new gadget (that's pretty often....)   The Kindle is still primarily, an eReader.
    3.   Wifi or wifi and cellular - If you have a smart phone and can tether a tablet, you don't need cellular on the tablet.  With more places offering free hot spots, wifi is more than adequate. ( I use very little cellular on my mini)
    4.    iTunes and the App store;  I will start by saying I am cheap.  If the App isn't free, it has to be really valuable to me or I won't buy it.  I paid for Pages on my iPad 2 years ago and I bought a password wallet that syncs on all my devices on all platforms.  Aside from that I buy music to add to the CDs I imported to iTunes.  If you don't like iTunes and don't want to use it, keep looking at android tablets.
    5.    ios 7 - Never has Apple made such a big deal and been so poorly prepared to introduce a new ios.  It has devoted Apple heads steamed.  I count myself one and have had no problems with my devices, educated user I hope, or just really lucky.
    6.    I really USE my tablet.  I use it for work, for financial management and communications.  I rarely have to resort to the desktop as almost everything is possible on the iPad.  I love it's portability!  Documents and data flow back and forth with the cloud I never worry about losing anything or finding anything.  Photos download automatically from my Android smart phone with Dropbox App and are instantly available to load on all devices.
    7.    If you are a big PC hacker type, the switch to ios is culture shock.  The first time on the new iMac I was at my wits end trying to navigate.  I only had to stop working so hard and it all fell into place.
    My personal experience:
I have the iPad 2, (wifi only) and the first mini (with 4G LTE) and I had a 4th generation iPod touch and now have a 5th Gen iPod touch (which I really like a lot).  My son has an iPhone 4S and the iPad with retina display.  Both my sons have had iPods through the years.
My 50 year old eyes prefer the bigger screen of iPad 2 and typing is much easier.  But I love the portability of the smaller tablet, so one for home, one for the road.  Thanks to iCloud what ever is on one is also on the other, documents, data, contacts, etc.   Retina display, my son has it, I don't, I can't say I miss it.  It does make pictures look better, if you are a photo person, the retina display is worth it.
I also have transitioned from PC to Apple completely, I bought an iMac 4 years ago and it is as fast as it was on day one, no crashes, repairs, viruses.  I just bought a Mac Mini and I also use Apple Airport extreme for router and I have an Apple TV (the only disappointment, I prefer the Roku 2)
I'm sure that was more than you asked for.....

I bought my iPhone 4 open line in Vancouver, Canada last week for use here in my home base in Bangkok, Thailand.  But when I tried using my Thai sim, I get a very weak signal, if not a weak signal, then a no service status.  I also have very weak wifi reception.  What do I do?
    I already tried the following:
    a. Turned the phone off and then on.
    b. Checked all wifi connections – no problem given that all our laptops and desktops can connect seamlessly.
    c. I tried restoring the phone to original factory settings via itunes
    d. Tried resetting the phone.
    e.     Tried different microsims from all networks
    f. However, all methods failed given that the network reception is very weak and often reflects – “no service”.  And with regards to the wifi reception It has difficulty in reading even the signal right in front of the wifi router.
I went to two Apple resellers here in Bangkok and requested that they please look at my Iphone and have it serviced.  I was frustrated when they said that given that I bought my phone in Canada, they are not able to support me and should instead try to contact the Apple store in Canada.
I went to apple.ca website and went to the expresslane support and I was said to register and callback.  Tried calling the 1800 number but given that I was in Thailand I had difficulty getting a connection.

I have Pages '08 3.0.3. Am trying to Download an Upgrade but get a message saying "an eligible Keynote application was not found in the location/Applications/iWork '09".
    What to do?

Go to the App Store in your Applications folder, not in a browser, and search for 'Pages':
Click on the price to buy immediately (there is no 'basket') - the credit card you have registered with iTunes will be charged. Or click on the icon for an information page:
Again, click on the price to buy immediately - note that you get no 'are you sure', the purchase is immediate and not cancellable.

Ipad won't start; trying to restore thru itunes, but get the message - can't restore because ipad is not set up. It was set up and has been in use for about a year.  What do I do now?

I Have seen people report this issue when they try to sync their devices but in never seen it when trying to restore an unresponsive iPad. I would sguggest trying recovery mode now.
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
This procedure will totally erase the iPad so I hope that you have a backup that you can restore from....assuming that it works, that is.

i am trying to download itunes and i get this message: service apple mobile device failed to start. verify that you have suffient privileges to start system services. what do i have to do?

    Hi txatxo
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  You may need to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service.  This article has instructions for doing this:
How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1567
If that doesn't resolve the issue, I would recommend trying a thorough uninstall and reinstall of iTunes as described here:
