Trying to delete Vault, Aperture 1.5 crashes

Question

First, i create a vault on an external LaCie 160GB FW drive. Took two tries to create the vault - at least Aperture thinks it is created. but there is nothing in that folder where it supposedly got created.
Then when I try and update it, it doesn't do anything and says the vault is disconnected.
So, I try and remove the vault - Aperture crashes every time.
I rebuild the library - same exact results.
Now what?
The backup ability of Aperture should be one of its strong suit. Looks to me like it is an achilles heel instead.

back up all your photographs before doing anything else
i am not saying it is the drive by any means but i have quite a few clients having problems with that brand of drives.

open the System Profiler by clicking on the Apple icon on the upper left of your screen, click About This Mac now select More Info/Hardware/Firewire...does the System Profiler see the drive?
if so, make sure the drive is on prior to starting Aperture. open Disk Utility and while in it select the First Aid tab and Verify the drive, do you get any red error message?

how are you doing this? i guess not through Aperture?
