Trying to do clean install from USB after kernel problem

MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2010
- was running OS X v 10.9
- 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
Machine was running extremely slow, unable to do anything with it. When booted to safe mode, lag issue was not present. Booted to Disk Utility, left column showed (photoshoped to show how it looked originally):
Verified and repaired Macintosh HD and disk1 - OS X Base System, no problems.
Booted Option R - Erased Macintosh HD, tried to do new install from online, failed 3 times (took in excess of 8 hours each time). Still lagging, mouse movement very irratic.
Reset SMC, and NVRAM, some improvemet with mouse movement and speed
Read suggestions online to erase entire drive, boot from USB to DU, and install from bootable USB. Tried to do that. When in the boot from screen (Option) mouse lag not apparent. Chose USB, it opened up DU. Erased Macintosh HD again. Cannot delete or unmount OS X Base System, new screen looks like this:
From this screen, I exit back to the first screen and select Install OS X Mavericks, it gives me the choice to install on USB or Macintosh HD, I chose the latter, follow the steps, get a screen saying it's installing then it brings me back to DU after about 10 min. What am I missing here? Do I need to partition Macintosh HD creating a boot portion? I'm not a Mac person, I'm trying to fix this for my son.
Can I even do an install on Macintosh HD? I get that prior to booting to USB, I was using disk1, and so it couldn't be erased, but booting from the USB, would I not be using DU from the USB, and therefore able to clean the HD and start fresh? I'm guessing that the boot disk is causing the lag, and want to get rid of it.
Or is the disk showing disk3: OS X Install ESD accessible someone to do the install and I'm just going in circles?
I'd be extremely appreciative of any help you could provide, thank you.

Try this: (1) On your Mac mount the disk in the Time Capsule (probably called "Data"). (2) In the "Data" volume locate and mount the "sparsebundle" image that contains the "old" backups. (3) Click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then choose from the pop-up menu the option to "Browse Other Time Machine Disks". That should give you access to the old files.

I am (belatedly) attempting to upgrade my trusty mid-2008 aluminum macbook from Leopard to Mountain Lion. (I know the question says the product is Mac OS X (10.4.10), but it is not). I understand that Snow Leopard is required, so I ordered the installation disc from Apple and attempted installing it - but unfortunately the Superdrive seems to have taken a turn for the worse - it usually spits the disc out after about a minute of attempting to read, and sometimes makes it to the installation screen but then says the DVD is damaged (which it is not: Pretty much every CD/DVD is sputtering in my drive).
So, I did some researching and found that you could transfer Snow Leopard to a usb drive, boot from there and then proceed to install the OS. I went and borrowed my friend's pc running windows vista (there are no macs around), and attempted to put SL on the usb drive - but apparently the format(FAT) the drive was in only allows sizes of up to 4GB. So I formatted the usb drive to NTFS, got SL onto the drive successfully and attempted to boot from it - no dice. It seems you can only boot from the previous format the drive was in, FAT (I could be wrong on this).
So, I have two questions:
1: Is there a workaround for this NTFS/FAT issue so that I can get Snow Leopard onto my computer with only the usb drive, my computer and my friend's pc? SL is currently on the usb drive in NTFS format.
2: If not, is there a quick and dirty way to try to fix the superdrive without taking it for repairs? The computer is honestly on its last legs, and I am not willing to fix everything that is wrong with it. I have an external hard drive with everything backed up, but unfortunately I will not be able to get to it for at least a month so that is not an option.

NTFS is a Widows only file system. Mac OS X can read it, but not write to it, and certainly not boot from it.
FAT32 is read/write on both platforms, but as far as I'm aware you can't boot from it.
To boot an OS X system you need to format on a Mac as GUID partition Map and Mac OS Extended (Journalled) file system (aka HFS+ (J) ).
As to whether the optical drive is repairable, without hands-on no-one can say for sure. I assume you've done the basics of cleaning the laser heads and such.

Clean install from Leopard to M. Lion on new disk

I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro with 10.5.8 and a too small disk. I just purchased a 500GB internal disk. I'd like to do a clean install from Leopard to Mountain Lion using the new disk. What is the recommended procedure? I'd like to avoid the extra step of installing Snow Leopard first as documented.

Well, I wouldn't do it that way, too many steps.
I would:
1. Clone your current drive to the external drive, instead of using Time Machine. (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper)
2. Boot from your external drive, update it to Snow Leopard.
3. Purchase and download ML from that external boot. Save a copy of the installer to a location other than the Applications folder, that way it won't be erased after you use it. (verify that you've made a copy and not just an alias)
4. Install your new drive, format it.
5. Boot from your external, run the ML installer, select your new empty internal as the install destination, when prompted, use Setup Assistant to migrate your data from the external to the internal.
6. When done, you should have a fresh install of ML on your new internal and a bootable SL on your external as a backup. If you decide that you want to go back to SL, you can just erase the internal and clone the external back to the internal.
Note: You don't need to make a bootable USB installer, they're too slow anyway. Just keep a copy of the ML installer on your external, bootable drive, so that you won't have to download it again.
Another option: Since you're replacing the intrenal with a 500 Gig drive, you could partition it to two 250 Gig partitions. Put ML on one and SL on the other, i.e.,

I have 2 partitions in my internal hard drive they are
1. Mac OS (Sysem Files)
2. HDD (Other Personal Documents).
I did Time Machine Backup in HDD partition. So now i want to do clean install from the Time Machine Backup without format the whole drive since my system not booting meant that system crashed and cant boot in anyway (Just consider ). Also I have MAC bootable USB stick.

Having never seen a setup like that, I'm not sure how it will work.
In theory, just erase the Mac OS volume, then install, choosing to recover from a Time Machine backup.
When you boot into Recovery, open Disk Utility and select the Mac OS volume, not the whole disk. Erase it, then quit DU and restore from the Time Machine backup. However, this is the part I'm not certain of. I would imagine the partition with TM backup will be mounted, but I don't know.
If you can't see the Time Machine backup from the Recovery HD on the drive, try it from the USB Recovery stick (it is a Recovery USB and not the old Lion install USB, correct?)

If you don't have a "built-in" recovery HD because of your partitioning, then you would have to boot from that USB Recovery disk.
Your setup is severely flawed. A backup on the same drive as the data is not a backup. You will lose everything with a disk failure.
Also, partitioning off your OS on a Mac is not necessary and is probably counterproductive. OS X is not Windows.

1. Make a backup of the data you don't want to lose after erasing the hard disk.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Erase the hard drive:

Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.

You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

HP Stream 13 tried clean install windows 10. Big Problem

EDIT: I have am HP Stream 13 that came with 8.1 The hard drive ont hese things is not large enough to compleate the upgrade to windows 10. So i preformed a clean install from a USB. Now i have 10 and it is not activated. NOW I read that you MUSST preform the upgrade first in order for windows to detect your hardware and register it as valis for the free windows 10. BUT since upgrade was not posible I have a windows 8.1 key that is useless since there is no service to change the key to a windows 10 key.. This is insane. these laptops are being advertisd with the free upgrade to windows 10 yet are not able to be upgraded. Not sure what to do now. I am running a new HP stream 13 touchscreen with windows 8.1 I want to upgrade to windows 10 before I am back to school (before i have to install all kinds of software and files) Obciously the Stream does not have enough SSD left to preform the upgrade. I have created a clean install USB thumb drive but am worried about using it. From what i have read the recovery partition that is not deleteable houses files that the system accesses. When i do a Clean install wiping the C drive (but not the partition) will everything work? will i loose the use of that partition space forever? and lastly I used a program to access my windows key since it is located in the bios not on a sticker but I want to know if anyone else has done this and did it auto detect? or did they run in to any problems. Hi, 1. You can have this option: create a Recovery media (USB key) then delete the Recovery partition, this will give you more room.2. Not 100% work unless Windows 10 or you can dind all drivers for your computer. Again, to get more space, you can delete Recovery partition but please create a Recovery set/media first.3. I upgraded 5 laptops on weekend inluding 2 HP laptops. I used tool to get the keys by Windows 10 upgrade (not clean install) could detect the keys in BIOS. turn the mac all the way off. turn the mac on by pressing the power button. as soon as the apple logo appears, pres and hold your mouse button(trackpad mouse clicker etc...) until the CD comes out.

How much RAM do you have? Also, open Activity Monitor, click the System Memory tab and look at your page ins and page outs. If page outs is more than 1/10 of the page ins, you need more RAM. I myself was having some beach balls when doing certain demanding things (playing games, using Aperture, etc), and noticed that these values were darn close to equal. So I upgraded from 4 GB to 8 GB of RAM and all is now good, no matter what I'm doing.
My timemachine backups failed a few days ago, I lost my copy of a working SL backup at that time, so much for diligence.
Yeah, one backup is not nearly enough. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people who didn't realize their backups were on their way out until the moment they actually needed them, and then it's too late. Keep one Time Machine backup in the future, and at least one other backup with something like Carbon Copy Cloner.
I do think that it is important to know if others have had success with clean installs because I need to know if it is worth my while. Did you do a clean install?
But what I'm telling you is that it doesn't matter what others say. Unless you know that the cause of their problems is exactly the same as the cause of your problems, what they say is irrelevant. There are plenty of people here who have been helped by clean installs, but if all you need is more RAM, a clean install will be a waste of your time.
I did not do a clean install, I just installed Lion right on top of Snow Leopard. And except for my memory issues, which were overall nonexistent except when (and after) running certain apps, it's been a pretty smooth transition. But again, that has no bearing on your situation, except to tell you there's nothing inherently problematic about an upgrade install.

Bluescreen when trying a clean install from CD - X61

I got a question from a neighbour if I could help him reinstall his laptop. It's a X61.
He got it from his employer when they decided to buy a bunch of new laptops for the company. Therefore he has no backup discs, no system reset software or anything. It's just the laptop and the power supply. He used the laptop 'as is' for a while but now it needs cleaning. He asked the IT department on his job but they didnt save any discs or software for the laptops. There is a Restore and Resque partition on the HDD which is accessible via the Thinkvantage button at boot, but no software in that console is working.
So he went out and bought a Windows XP license to make a clean install on the PC but we are having difficulties to make it run...
I tried to format an USB stick to install Windows XP from. After boot I only get a blank screen with a flashing marker...
I tried an external DVD-drive since the PC doesnt have any and I get the installations program to run. It starts to load the files but after a short while I get a bluescreen...
I'm running out of options here, any suggestions?

echX, welcome to the forum,
a solution that works for a lot of people is to set the SATA to compatability mode in BIOS; press F1 at boot > Config > SATA. After XP has been installed you can install the necessary driver and switch it back to AHCI.

Clean Install: from Recovery Disk vs. from USB Flash Drive

Planning to do a clean install on my MBP running Yosemite. Have come across two ways of doing this: From the Recovery Disk or from a USB Flash Drive.
If the clean install can be done by using the Recovery Disk, why would you do one using a USB drive?
Is there any benefit to the USB drive method? Basically I want to know if one way is preferable over the other.
I want to make sure I wipe everything, as my machine's been slow/glitchy since OS X Yosemite was first installed/updated; I'm also not sure if I have picked up anything else along the way. (I'm pretty careful with my browsing/downloading, but I like to be sure.)

The advantage of the USB drive is that you do not need an Internet connection. If you do not have a solid Internet connection or the Apple servers are down, you may be dead in the water. The only possible advantage of using the recovery option is that the latest version of the given OSX will be available. That may not be the same as what is installed on the USB drive.
Before you use either option, make certain that you have your data backed up.

Thanks for your reply. The only way I can open the pdf file is to save it locally. I don't understand why can't I just click and open the pdf file without saving them

Need to do a clean install of FF31 after bad sectors on HDD caused installed FF to crash Windows upon opening.

After running MRT update on Windows XP SP3, I rebooted my PC, and CHKDSK found and repaired four bad sectors on my HDD. After this, starting Firefox 31.0, even in Safe Mode, would cause Windows to freeze at the point the FF window appeared. No menus, no toolbars, just the window with the basic frame, but nothing inside it. All input devices were non-responsive, forcing me to do a hardware restart of my machine.
Upon restart, everything else worked fine until I tried to start FF - then the OS froze again.
Searching Firefox support, all answers I could find suggested deleting old (possibly corrupt) profile data with Profile Manager before reinstalling FF - but, if FF freezes the machine upon starting, there is no way to do that.
How do I MANUALLY delete all old profile data, other Firefox data files, and registry entries from my PC so that I can do a clean install of FF 31.0?
NOTE: The information given about my browser under "More System Details" is mostly WRONG. I am currently using the only browser that works - the outdated Orca Browser v1.2 with a Firefox 3 core. It is FF 31.0 that I am asking help with.

You must totally remove Firefox. It sounds like part of it's programing

After installing, try FF. If your user file are okay, Great!
*1 Download the Full installer and put it somewhere.
*2 Rename your current '''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Maintenance Service''' and '''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox'''. Add a '''X''' in front of the name (for example).
*3 Run the disk check '''AGAIN''' just to be sure.
*4 Now get the full installer and run it.
*5 After the installer is done, then try out FF.

Custom clean install from recovery ?

want to clean install 10.8.3 using app store through recovery mode.
my question:
as i recall, i have access to disk utility before the new download, soooooooooo,
will disk utility allow me to partition my mac's hard drive (after erasing) and THEN download the OS onto the start-up partition?
or, do i have to go through the rigamarole of creating a ML DVD?

[have owned a new 27" for close to three weeks now and am still mucking about trying to configure it and retain files and users and passwords, etc from previous mbp. due to my previous failure to understand the consequences of having multiple apple id's (that i never wanted, but am nevertheless stuck with), this will be my second clean install. grrrrr.]

i erased the hard drive so that i could make partitions.
only then did i learn and understand the small print on the screen that says "you may only split this partition into two."
i had hoped to make four partitions.
i have created as many as four partitions on external drives in the past, so did not anticipate this restriction on my imac hard drive.
guess i'll forget the partition idea and restore my imac with a clean install and then migration assistant.
i fear that i know the answer to this next question, but...
if i were to go ahead and create the two partitions allowed on my imac's hard drive, would it be possible in the future - when feel that i no longer need its contents - to eliminate it and merge the space with the start-up partition?
[life would be so much easier if i had a billion dollars so i could afford two or three apple computers...]
