Trying to download Java for OS X but Safari reports website dropping connection?

I trying to downoand and install an openoffice application s/w. It requires Java. So I when to download Jave and when I hit the download button, Safari reports that the website has dropped the connection. What is the issue? How do I install Java? Or is there other "open" office s/w available?
