Trying to drag Library to ext drive, having issues

I'm trying to drag my Library to a hard drive but I keep getting error message -36 about halfway through. Apparently there is a problem with one of the photos that stops the procedure. I have tried using spotlight to find the photo using the DSC number that appears but no luck. Any ideas how to isolate the bad files and complete the transfer?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That error is an I/O error so am not sure what would cause it. Check to make sure you have Ownership is turned off on the external like this. Also You might try downloading and runing BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
If that doesn't help, try copying the library folder over in batches. First create a folder titled iPhoto Library on the external HD. Then copy the various database files, then the Data folder, the Modified folder, and lastly the Originals folder.
If the message comes with one of the folders, create a new folder in the new library folder with the same name and then copy over each subfolder. That should let you to identify the file. Once you have the file indentified, you can delete it from your library and then drag it over again, deleting the one you used to find the bad file.
Do you Twango?

Delete background Apps from memory and then Reset.
To Delete background Apps, double click Home button, in the bar at bottom, hold down on an App Icon until the minus sign appears, tap all the minus signs, until all background Apps are cleared from memory. Then Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to restart itself, ignor the 'slide to power off' let the iPhone restart itself. Usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons.

  • ?how to move  songs from library in ext drive to new library on int drive

I am trying to set up an application called iBirdPod and am having problems because my large iTunes library is on an external drive. The developer suggests I move the bird songs I previously ripped to the ext drive to a new library on my internal drive.
I know I can create a second library by holding down the option key when I open iTunes.
The question is how to move the bird songs I have already ripped from the original library on the external drive to my new library on the internal drive and then delete them from the external drive? They will ultimately go on my iPod after they have been altered a bit by the iBirdPod application.
thanks for any help with this
    Caroline

I have been unable to get the birdPodmaker software to work (it makes some changes to the birdsongs previously ripped to the iTunes library to make them easier to use on an iPod) so the developer suggested the problem might lie in the fact that iTunes and the birdPodmaker softerware are on my iMac's internal drive, while the iTunes library is on an external drive (because the library is large and growing).
I know there are several options for having a second (or more ) ITunes library via iTunes itself, via Libera or via Doug Adams iTunes Library manager. I am just not sure what the best way is to move the actual bird songs themselves from my primary iTunes library on the external drive to a new one on the internal drive without either duplicating them or having to delete them from the external drive and then rerip them to the internal drive.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Drag & drop to ext drive for backup; "insufficient privileges" error

I tried this in the Time Machine forum but I think this is a better forum.
I backup monthly to an external drive by dragging my Home folder to the ext drive & overwriting the prior month's data. About every other time, after it reads the # of files to copy over, I get a window that says:
The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
I'm the Administrator and I'm backing up the main/admin home folder. When I dig deeper to troubleshoot the problem "items", it's always the same. It starts backing up the subfolders in Library, then when it gets to "MIDI Drivers" (which is empty on the original Home folder), it stops and doesn't copy anything after it. The next subfolder is "Plugins", which has three more subfolders inside, all of which are also always empty.
Why does it keep hanging up on these subfolders? When I narrow it down and copy them over one by one, they copy with no problem, but for some reason it always hangs on these subfolders.
Incidentally, I don't add much data in the course of a month so the monthly backup is fine; my ext drive is noisy so I don't like to keep it on 24/7; it's a hassle to plug & unplug the drive from the Macbook whenever I want to move around the house; and if it wasn't for the error message, the drag & drop is about as simple as it can get for me.
    Any ideas?

If this isn't happening with a specific application, then you might try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • How to keep entire photo library on ext drive and only slideshows on laptop

I recently did an erase/install upgrade to Tiger on my g4 powerbook laptop. My previous iPhoto 4 library is safely backed up on an external drive. I would like to keep the entire library on that drive and import new photos only to that drive and edit on that drive. I would like to have a second iPhoto library on my laptop that only contains slideshows that I have created on the external drive. I received mixed opinions at the genius bar: One guy told me that I would end up with a big mess and another guy told me it would be straightforward and easy.
So this is what I think I need to do:
    1. Open iPhoto '08 on my powerbook (it wants to upgrade the library even though there is nothing currently in it. Is it OK to let it upgrade?)
    2. Open it again while holding alt/option and ask it to create a new iPhoto library on the external drive (should I name it something unique?).
    3. Drag my backed-up iPhoto library folder (its contents) into the new iPhoto library on the external drive (I imagine it will want to update them as well).
    4. When I want to move a slideshow over to my laptop, export a copy of the slideshow to a laptop desktop folder (so it sends copies only) and then move them into my laptop iPhoto library (I have no idea whether the slideshow order and settings would be preserved).
I hope my thinking is right and would appreciate any comments or suggestions?
I am concerned that when I connect my camera to my laptop, it will want to open the laptop iPhoto library and import there instead of to the external drive library. How do I get the pics from my camera to the external drive library?
    Again, thanks!

    rbfactor:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Regarding Step 3: do not import the old library into the new one. You'll get the modified files as regular files and lose your keywords, tiles, albums, slideshows, etc.
What I would do is put your full library on the external HD. Then create a new library on your PB. In the primary library create an album with the pictures you want for the sideshow. Then use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager tocopy that album from the external HD library to your PB library. Unfortunately you cannot copy over the slideshow settings or the music used. You'll have to have your iTunes library on the PB and set the slideshow settings once your have the photos on the PB.
The alternative is to export the slideshow as a QT file and copy that to the PB and run with QT player.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Moved itunes library to ext drive  now i cannot find music

i have moved my library to an external hard drive and then deleted content from my computer, now itunes cannot locate library when drive is connected, how do i make itunes work again? i even copied from ext drive back to computer and still no luck, im totally lost

There is exactly one way to move your library to an external HD.
If you try it any other way, you will be greeted with exclamation points and other hassles.
The one way is: Go to preferences and point your iTunes Music folder to the new location. Then run Consolidate Library.
Also, once you have your library on the external, never start up iTunes without the external being turned on and accessible. Otherwise, iTunes reverts the location to the local drive.

  • Problem trying to drag backups between external drives

I'm trying to drag a Backups.backupdb folder from its original external HD (LaCie 1TB) to a new external HD (Western Digital 2TB RAID 1). I'm getting this error message:

    How can I fix/enable ownership?

    Hello
Just had the same problem. The easiest thing to do is go to your Time Machine preferences and enable Time Machine with the hard drive you are trying to copy the backup to. Once you do that Time Machine starts to calculate sizes and all that to make the first copy. Skip that fist backup and now you will be able to copy the backup to the disk. When you finish the copy disable the Time Machine on that disk and you are done.
No, that will not copy the backups properly. TM backups use a rather complex file structure, involving multiple hard links, and the Finder will not copy them correctly.
V.K.'s advice is correct: you can duplicate one TM disk/partition to another one, but you must click the +Erase Destination+ box.
To do what you want, partition the new disk first. TM works best if it has it's own, exclusive partition anyway. Then duplicate the old disk/partition to the TM partition you just made on the new drive.
See items #3 and 6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum for info on why you need to do the partition, and how to do it. Then use the instructions in item #18 to do the duplication.

I have no idea what you are speaking of - files and folers do not have Pref files - only applications have Pref files

  • DVD Drive Having Issues Reading Discs

    Hi there,
I have 2 MBP's (original and unibody model) and an iMac. However, the computer having the issue is the original MBP as listed below. I barely use the DVD drive but I thought I'd treat myself to the Sims 3 only to find that the DVD drive keeps spitting it out and 3rd time was lucky but then repeat over and over. It makes a noise like it is failing to read it properly. I thought it might've been a dodgy Sims disc so tried in my unibody and it works perfect.
This is not the only time I've had issue with it though. When it was still in warranty it would be very picky with certain DVD movies and the picture would freeze/randomly skip/not play at all. I did send it off to repair but as it works perfect with other discs, they couldn't find a problem and nothing was ever done about it.
I've just put in an audio CD I bought at a gig (so assume it was written on blank media) and the computer is saying it is a blank disc when it is not.
I dropped my laptop and it was sent in for repair a few months ago, they checked everything (as it was obviously dropped) and again, found no fault with CD/DVD drive (although the problems originated before it was dropped anyway).
Is there anything I can do my end? Resetting or something? If I send it in again it will cost me money as now out of warranty and I feel they will just tell me they cannot find a fault, again!
    Thanks for reading,
    -Lisa

Many people will recommend a lens cleaning disc first, cheap and easy if it helps. Otherwise, I would consider replacing the optical drive, which a careful person can install themselves with online instructions. The replacement drives are less than $100USD. These drives often seem to get dodgy.

  • Trying to repair Satellite A105-S4201 (driver/software issue)

I have been fixing a friend's laptop that had about 83 viruses on it, and ended up having to reinstall windows in order to get it to boot properly. I rebuilt a windows install disk using the I386 folder provided on her hard drive.
Everything checked out and windows activated seemlessly, but I am in fact still having a problem. The toshiba website does not seem to have the correct drivers or software for this product, as the following devices are still in need of a proper driver, according to my device manager:
-Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
    -SM Bus Controller
    -Video Controller
    -Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
the provided video driver fails to install, saying that there was no suitable device (was an nvidia driver on the site...prob doesnt even run on an nvidia card). The audio does not seem to work either. The last issue is that the media keys do not function properly. Is there some sort of driver source that can fill me in on these loose gaps? Been wrecking my mind for hours and im about to stroke out and tell her to buy some recovery cds.
Message Edited by dreamstate83 on 01-02-2009 02:28 AM

Updates! I now have every device in device manager matched up with appropriate drivers. The only issue remaining is with the keyboards extended functionality, including the media keys and the Functions for the f key row (such as increase/decrease brightness). Where is the software/drivers i need for this?

  • Trying to finish mother's day gift- Having issues- PLEASE HELP!!!

    Hello.
I worked for hours on this movie trying to figure it all out. After I would get pretty far into making the movie...it would say that my disk was almost full. So then I saved the project to my external hard drive, and then after it saved when I tried to add a new photo-it looked like it was loading it- then the photo just dissappeared from the timeline. It pretty much won't let me alter the project at all.
I am very new to the Mac, and to the Imovie program. I figured out the program for the most part, but I have no idea how to save it correctly so it does not become corrupt. I have redone the movie 3 or 4 times, but as soon as the computer's capacity gets close to being full, I have to save it to the external drive, and once I do that all kinds of problems arise.
Can someone please tell me how to do this correctly...and in as simple of terms as possible
I am trying to have this done by Sunday for Mother's Day...and I still have hours of work to do!!!
    THANK YOU!!

And agreed that while you were still working on
the project and  iDVD may be looking for
it, it is a good idea to keep it on your start-up
    drive.
But that's not what you said, Klaus1.
I agree that as we work in iDVD the iMovie project shouldn't be moved. But that wasn't jledney's situation. He/she simply wanted to move the project to an external drive because the main drive was filling up. There is no reason that can't be done, assuming the drive has the correct format.
A fair read of your comments is that we must begin and finish creating a DVD of the iMovie project before we can move an iMovie project to an external drive, and that's not correct. Apparently that's not what you intended to say.

I signed up for an apple account ant it would only let me use my hotmail account. I got an account and i tried to use it to sign into icloud and it isn't working. THe apple web site stated that I could re name my account later. Please tell me what i need to do. I have a windows 7.

I understand that you have also used the download link & serial number from Adobe - CS2 Downloads, if still the CS2 is not working, then please refer to the system requirement for e.g System requirements | Photoshop
The issue can be that the present operating system might not be compatible with the CS2.

  • IPhoto: can't copy my library to another drive

I'm trying to back up (and ultimately move) my 94GB iPhoto library to an external harddrive and just before it finishes copying I get a message that says, "The Finder can't complete the operation because some date in "iPhoto Library" can't be read or written. Sorry, I don't think I was clear;  the source drive is Windows FAT32 and has the iPhoto library, the destination drive is a Lacie formatted with Mac OS Extended and is empty.
I haven't been successful after four attempts to copy by dragging library to destination drive.
