Trying to edit a picture always ruins it

I'm having a problem with iPhoto, that's been going on for a while. It originally started happening with iPhoto 6. I recently upgraded to iPhoto '09, but am still having the same problem.
Every time I try to edit a picture in iPhoto, it gets totally ruined. All sorts of colored noise ends up in the picture. The whole thing is covered with this horizontal bands of color noise. If you zoom in on the picture, the horizontal bands are actually made up of lots of one pixel wide vertical lines.
[Here is a link to an example image|http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/598/p1010479edit.jpg]. I've shrunk it down for uploading, but it gives a good idea of what I'm seeing. The only edit I made to this photo was to move the 'shadow' slider over some.
I can do very basic things like crop and rotate a picture, but any kind of editing in the 'adjust' palette causes it. The thing is, during the adjusting itself, everything looks fine, it's just when I hit 'done' do these bands show up. Even stranger, if I go back and reedit the same photo, the bands go away while I'm in edit mode, but then come back when I hit 'done'.
I've tried reinstalling iPhoto. As I said, it's done this with a previous iPhoto version as well, and across a number of OS X versions. It even does this on different user accounts on my machine.
It's really annoying not to be able to touch up any of my pictures. I searched, but didn't see anyone else post an issue like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
To summarize your problem:
1. It happens with more than one version of iPhoto.
2. It happens in more that one account.
3. It happens with more than one OS.
Try some basic remedies. I don't think they will solve the problem, but it can't hurt to try them. Quit iPhoto and delete your iPhoto preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.iphoto.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iPhoto; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
Do a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.
My feeling is that this is a hardware rather than software problem. If the problem persists, I suggest that you post in the PowerMac G5 forum.
I hope this helps.

  • Picture goes "vague" when trying to edit in iPhoto

    Hi everyone,
I'm using a MacBook Air 13inch 2014 with iOS 10.9.5 and iPhoto 9.5.1. I've read the topic's about pictures turning "vague" or about iPhoto reducing resolution of pictures (which I now know is not possible), but unfortunately I couldn't find an answer to my question so far. I'm also aware that "turning vague" is a very vague word, but unfortunately I don't know how to describe it otherwise.
My question is as follows: when I open a picture in iPhoto it appears in the original resolution and I can tell if a picture is sharp, but when I like to edit my picture and press the "edit" button, my picture suddenly looks "vague" in the edit-screen. When I go back to the regular iPhoto screen or zoom in on the picture in the "edit screen", the picture is not vague anymore so I know nothing really changes and it's just about the appearance. Sometimes the "vagueness" also resolves in the edit-screen after a few seconds, but this is definitely not always the case. So, with this problem, while going through my pictures in the edit-screen, I can't tell which pictures are actually vague or which ones appear to be vague just because of the edit-screen.
Hopefully someone can help me out!

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

The rebel XS is supported by Camera Raw version 4.6 and newer... Update to that version of camera raw.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4044 fro windows
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4035 for mac (since you do not state your operating system...)
Follow the instructions on the readme found on the download pages, and you'll be all set!
Also, I guess that you tried the version 4.1 of the converter. One should always use the latest version.

  • Call Display Picture Always Full Screen (I don't want that)

There are a few discussions about this, but they all seem to be over 4 years old, and I still have the problem.  (Please read the whole explanation, as I've tried several fixes already)
I am extremelly picky with my computer and phone "stuff".  Ever since I've owned my iPhone I've made it a point to add a picture to every contact I have.
Early in my iPhone ownership I realized that if you add a picture directly from your iPhone (wether is taking it directly from the iPhone cam while adding the contact or choosing from the library) such picture shows FULL screen when I call that person or when that person calls me.  If I simply open Address Book in my Mac and "drag" a picture (say for instance from Facebook) into the picture section of that contact and then synch, then when I make or receive a call from that person it shows small and I still see my wallpaper on the background.
Well THAT's what I want (just like in the Appple commercials), I DON'T want the full screen picture.
    Now here's THE PROBLEM;
For some reason NOW, I STILL add pictures the SAME WAY (I go into Facebook, and drag the picture into Address Book) but when I make or receive a call from that person the display picture ALWAYS shows full screen!!  It's annoying the heck out of me!!
The ONLY thing different is that now my contact are synched thru iCloud as opposed to synching using a USB cable in iTunes, HOWEVER, SOME contacts show how they are supposed to show (even adding them thru iCloud), but MOST others don't! I feel I should add that ALL contacts I had BEFORE I strated synching with iCloud still show fine, the ones that have a problem are MOST (but not all) of the ones I added AFTER I started synching thru iCloud.  And the fact that a few worked fine leads me to believe there's got to be a way of making them all show small.
Anyone has any idea of how to keep them ALL the same?

OK, that's interesting.  Now, how do I get all of my contact photos into iPhoto? And do I have to do this one contact at a time, or is there a setting where I can "import all".  Furthermore, once all photos are in iPhoto and I select "Import Face from iPhoto" can I do such actions for all contacts at once or do I have to do them one at a time?

  • How do I move clips in one pane of iMove (10.0.3) into the timeline?  iMovie somehow doesn't realize I'm trying to edit the clips.

How do I move clips in one pane of iMove (10.0.3) into the timeline?  iMovie somehow doesn't realize I'm trying to edit the clips.

    Try this:
Select a small portion of the clip in the event (Above the timeline)
Click and hold and drag that section into the timeline, it should snap into place but if you drag it above another clip, it will not replace it but will be placed on top and the sound from the other clip will still play. Also this will allow you to use Blue/Green screen modes as well as picture in picture.
The best way is to drag it to the far right

  • The item you are trying to edit has not yet been processed by iTunes Match

"The item you are trying to edit has not yet been processed by iTunes Match and any changes you make could be lost. Are you sure you wish to continue to edit information?"
How long is this supposed to take? I have some tracks that haven't been "processed" for days now.

I had this same problem. It was driving me crazy and I finally figured it out. On my main computer, I keep an actual file for of all my music. None of it lives solely in the cloud. However, on all my other iTunes Match devices, I stream all my music from the cloud (which includes songs I've purchased from iTunes as well as ones I've imported myself). One song in particular was stuck in limbo with the exact message you wrote. This particular song is not available in the iTunes Music Store. I didn't want to delete the file and reimport it because I like keeping all my play count and date added info. My other devices linked to my iTunes Match account knew that the song existed, but it could never actually play this particular song. I'd always get an error message.
Here's the solution: On another computer that's linked to your iTunes Match, delete the song. It will only ask you if you want to delete it from iCloud as the song file doesn't actually live on that computer. If you say yes, on the original computer where the song file lives, you'll now see the song file has a cloud icon with the X in it. From there, you can control-click on the song file and select, Add to iCloud. Then, it will add it to iCloud and will no longer be stuck "processing."

  • Edit a picture and go to the next photo

When I edit a picture and go to the next photo where is the photo I just edited saved?

Aperture is a database.  It's oddest feature is that "photo" is close to meaningless.  The Images you see are created on-the-fly by reading the Original (which is _never_ altered) and a text file of instruction (called, confusingly, a Version)  which are then applied to create the Image.  This image is often referred to as (I told you it was confusing) a Version.
You changes are always and automatically saved.  Any adjustment you make or metadata you add or change is permanent until you change it again.
You don't create _files_ until you need them outside of Aperture.  "Export" in Aperture, means "make me a file I can use with other programs".
    HTH.
    Here's a primer I penned.

  • Erorr When Trying to Edit & Save a SmartObject Layer

I ran into a problem which made it impossible for me to edit a SmartObject and save it. I was getting the error message:
Unable to save "E:\temp\temp\filename.psd" because of a program error.
I eventually figured out that the problem was occurring because I had changed my Temp directory using the Windows environment variable Temp. I wanted to move the temp dir off my system disc to a less heavily used disc (for better performance) but it turns out this causes problems. There was some obscure problem with permissions that made it impossible for Photoshop to save temp files to this temp directory. I tried explicitly setting permissions on the directory in Explorer. It seemed like the correct permissions should have been present. I was able to copy files into the directory from Explorer but programs like Photoshop and MS Word were unable to save there. I even tried running Photoshop in Administrator mode but it didn't help.
I eventually gave up and went back to the default location (%SYSTEMROOT%\TEMP). After a reboot Photoshop now edits and saves SmartObjects again.
This is on Windows 7 RC1 but I have a hunch Vista will have the same problem.
Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else runs into the problem.

I also have this problem. I have a cinema display and the newest iphoto gives me a totally white image--the right dimensions as the picture I am trying to edit, but totally useless. This was new with iphoto 9. It is very depressing, and obvious things haven't fixed it. Any ideas?
Clue: when I double click on the image in thumbnail mode, it turns all white before "zooming" into the full size version, so it is turning all white very early in the process. All drags/emails etc...treat the image appropriately, but I can't edit it (or look at it big) at all. Which makes iphoto not very useful.

  • Laptop 'hanging' when trying to change background picture

    Hi
I've tried to change the background picture under system preferences - desktop/screensavers. When I tried to select a picture from my iphoto-folders the system hung and won't come back at all until I shot it down with the on/off button. I wasn't even able to do a forced quit...
Did somebody encounter this as well?
It actually worked fine again after a restart, but still I think this a strange behaviour.
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If I can jump in here, Jason is asking about background applications of which there are several always running. You can check this by opening Activity Monitor (in Applications> Utilities).
Changing pictures is affected by a number of other applications, including (oddly) the Dock.
When you selected the picture, was it in one of the Original or Modified folders? Try copying the picture and moving it to a separate folder in the Pictures folder and selecting it again.

  • My adobe lightroom 4 is automatically editing my pictures, badly..???

I've had lightroom 4 for about a year or more now and a couple months ago it stared automatically editing my pictures after i exported them onto my computer, but when i opened up lightroom and viewed them, they were brightened a lot, and cropped in weird ways like half the picture was gone. And then a couple days ago my pictures automatically turned black and white when i imported them and before i even touched them. I tried uninstalling adobe and reinstalling but it just went back to the way it was. Help??? I need this for work and i really need to know how to fix this.

One other thing In your Lightroom Preferences > Presets tab> Default Develop Settings> make sure you do not have "Apply auto tone adjustments" selected.
In my experience having this selected is an "adventure into the unknown" to say the least.
You have no opportunity to see what the default lightroom settings; your camera default settings; or other presets produce,
The way I use this feature is on individual images, select auto tone, if it works for me fine, if it does not "edit/undo". If I have a couple of images that follow that I can copy to I use the sync feature.

  • Black Screen When Trying to Edit Photos

I have the same problem as many others: When trying to Edit a photo, double clicking it creates a normal enlarged screen but this screen is all black. The problem has been raised by many for some time but no solutions have been identified. Should I be surprised that Apple has not yet addressed or even recognize the problem?

what does it mean to right con it?
Sorry - right "click" - fat fingers here
when i try to view photos on full screen, i now get a black screen with a white exclamation point. i view these pictures earlier this year with no problem. please help!
That indicates that iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnail and the full photo - if you have not been messing around inside the iPhoto library (you NEVER should do this) then backup and rebuild your library - depress the command and options keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your library form the last automatic database backup - if that does not fix it use the other options - as a last resort use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to rebuild your library

  • Everytime I open Photos app, iPhone 4 tries to send a picture email.

Address isn't filled out but it is using a pic that isn't even the latest pic taken and now I have deleted all traces of that picture and it still pops up. Not necessarily super important, but it is annoying having to click cancel, then delete draft every time I wanna see a picture. Also checked drafts already, empty. Any ideas?

SEEMS TO BE FIRST CASE OF THIS GLITCH, SOLUTION AT BOTTOM!
I feel bad because I can never remember the names of the people I talk to at customer support but thank you to the very nice lady who helped me. (Rita?, Lisa? Linda? Sorry!)
Anyways, she said it was the first case of this she had seen as well (chalk it up to early adoption) so she had to ask higher ups, not something I think anyone enjoys doing, and refused to have me take "just restore" as an answer.
The suggestion of deleting the email account that was being used by the glitch to try sending the email, then re-adding, worked!
Details: Gmail account that was added under microsoft exchange for push support.
Had already deleted all instances of that picture on phone, then all instances on gmail and mobileme accounts by her suggestion, yet it was still popping up instantly when Photos launched. Still not sure where that was cached.
Anyways, looks like this is the first case of this. I tried calling back to thank her, but apparently we had gone past closing time while on the phone (hope you got some overtime!)
So if you ever read this, thanks from Javier @ 707,
    SOLUTION:
Delete email account being used by the "glitch" when it tries to send the picture email, check to make sure it's fixed. Took a few tries for me but finally cleared up without reboot or anything. Then just re-add the email account.
In this case it was a Gmail account but set up under Microsoft Exchange to use Push. I also had a mobileme account attached but not for email. So other accounts shouldn't matter if not being used for email. If you have multiple email accounts being used for email, just find out which email is being used to actually send it by letting it send the picture. Then delete accordingly. Re-add.

Anyone else having problems in Yosemite contacts changing the pictures of an individual contact? I click edit and then click the picture well and nothing. I tried everything I can think of to change or edit the picture. Is there some "More Intuitive" way of doing this now or is this just a bug?
