Trying to edit .avi file on imovie.

I got couple .avi file from my digital camera which are some of them are open by imovie but others are not open on imovie but I can see on quick time.
Please let me know how can I edit that file on imovie program.
Thank you

Hi zealous,
welcome to the  board
you gave us very little info to help you… ".avi" is no standard, just a socalled "container", can contain litterarely zillions of formats... (very little supported by Mac/iMovie).
please post your camera-model (we can research, what format it creates, then), and tell us, how you import the files from camera to your Mac (iPhoto? Finder? 3rd party apps?)
final word:
iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders
… it is no all-purpose-all-file-edit-app

  • Trying to Import AVI file to iMovie - Error -8969

Like some others before me, I too am having trouble importing .avi files to my iMovie version 4. Acccording to Command i, they are Motion JPEG OpenDML (they are .avi files from a Canon digital camera). They are viewable in QT. Several posts suggest they should import easily into iMovie. However, when I try to import, I get an error message (failed -8969). I tried converting the .avi file, with QT Pro, to both .mov and DV stream. It will convert to .mov, but when I try to import to iMovie, I get the same error message. I don't even get that far with DV: when I try to convert to DV stream, I get the same error message immediately. Any suggestions? Are there any plug-ins that would fix the problem?

    "codecBadDataErr = -8969"
"Codec : acronym for "compression/deccompression" , is an algorithm, or specialized computer program, that reduces the number of bytes consumed by large files and programs."
Used for video files, AVI, QuickTime and otherwise.
Conclusion: You got a bad file.
Come to think of it. I seem to remember a driver (or codec) that can be downloaded from Canon. Don't know any details, though.
PS. Please don't post your question twice.

  • Editing .AVI files in Final Cut Pro 5

I am trying to edit .AVI files on Final Cut Pro 5 on a volunteer basis.
I have converted the files to .MOV files with Quicktime Player.
I am able to import one of these files into Final Cut Pro 5, and can even watch it in the viewer.
But when I place it in the Sequence tab to edit it, I get a screen that says "UNRENDERED" for the whole clip.
Based on past experience, the video would be harder to edit in a rendered state.
Any advice on how to edit .AVI files would be much appreciated.

AVI files are quite similar to some .mov files, but the devil is in the details (so to speak.)
You don't give any particulars, so I'm going to assume you're working with standard definition NTSC video. Additionally, I'll assume that your system is PowerPC Mac since only FCP 5.1 and higher supports Intel processors.
FCP uses sequence presets that spell out the parameters for the timeline. If a clip is dissimilar or acquires enough filters to be functionally dissimilar, the timeline will become red for that portion of the timeline. The same is true for the audio portion of the clip.
The terms "QuickTime" and ".mov" (and probably ".AVI" for that matter) are kicked around as if they are specific but in fact they are quite vague. It's like saying you have a Ford; without any additional info like model and year,  it's hard to get down to cases.
Use Compressor or QuickTime Pro to convert your footage to DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (if it's SD and you're in North America) and make sure the audio is converted to 48KHz/16-bit. This should match the NTSC presets and your timeline should a "cool" color (dark blue to light green) and playback nicely.
Depending on the amount of processor power your system has, you may be able to play back clips with filters or even two or more layers of video without rendering. To be frank, don't count on it because someone has had well over 5 years to upgrade the system and hasn't so it may be "peaked out" already. You can usually step through the timeline using the arrow keys or by rendering short segments if you practice good "timeline hygiene" i.e., keep the timeline as clean as possible, don't strew clips over many video layers and let them stack up.
That should get you going, I strongly recommend you take a little time to read the help docs/// they actually can help.
    Good luck!

  • Imporing AVI files into Imovie 9

    Hey there
I am finding it impossible to import a AVI file into Imovie 9, it will recognise it as an improtable file but when i select it and click choose it just tries to process it and then acts as though I never clicked on it in the first place... no error message nothing.
Its strange that a video editing software is so limited (please dont say its not meant for editing strange movie formats as AVI is quite common) - is there a codec I can install or something to fix this problem?

Stop taking my post down - I bought your product and have an oppinion. I gave nice clear examples and asked questions!
You charge your Customers loads of money but cant handle it when they get angry for having to pay even more to fix something instead of offering a solution. Get it right.

  • Using WindowsDV  .avi files in iMovie and iDVD

I'm about to buy a Mac after using PCs for many years. I'm still deciding whether to buy an iMac 20", upgrade the Ram and use an external firewire drive or to get a Mac Pro and use internal drives. Initially I'll use iMovie and iDVD and I have some questions regarding using files I've already created on my PC. Up until now I've mainly been using Ulead Video Studio 10 and Ulead DVD Workshop. DVD Workshop does not do 16:9 menus and has now been discontinued and I've been impressed with iMovie and iDVD when I've seen it in Apple stores.
I have some unedited 16:9 .avi files that I've captured from my Panasonic GS-400 camcorder as well as some already edited .avi and .mpg files. Will iMovie and iDVD recognise .avi DV files when accessed through my network or copied onto the Mac hard drive? I'll load unedited clips into iMovie for editing but anything that's already edited I'd like to put straight into iDVD, add chapters and make a menu etc.
Is this going to work easily or will I have to convert the files to an apple compatible format?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
    Ken
      Windows XP Pro

Hi Ken and welcome to Apple!
You should not have a major problem. The AVI files should (repeat should) be recognized by iMovie. If not, conversion should (I love the certainty of that word!) be easy.
An iMac will do all you ask, but I recommend not less that 1GB of RAM.
At this stage, go get your iMac, and try to import the AVI files into iMovie. If that is not successful post back!
Remember: iMovie expects to be 'fed' by digital video through a firewire connection.
Any more questions, we are here to help!

  • AVI files in imovie '08

I know you can import AVI files, but iMovie does not import automatically the AVI files out iPhoto that ***** because I must copy now all my movies I already have in iPhoto. And my photocamera makes only AVI files. Anyone a solution to let the movies in iPhoto so you doesnt have to copy or import them??

Obviously, I think, the update is the culprit but I don't know how to solve it.
The same way you should always analyze AVI problems -- look at the codecs used. While it is always possible that the update may include different codec trapping routines, I doubt that they would eliminate a working combination on purpose. While I don't use AVI content on a regular basis simply because it is an outmoded container whose software developer abandoned it about a decade ago and it frequently contains compression formats which may or may not be available for the Mac, OS X, or work on a Core Duo machine, many users do. Unfortunately, they do not bother to learn about the various problems attendant with AVI use.
    1) Only Some AVI content will be compatible at all. For instance, the Casio M-JPEG/DVI ADPCM files are not compatible because the audio cannot be edited in iMovie '08. On the other hand, the combination of M-JPEG/Integer from a Z40 is compatible and imports on my system under Leopard to iMovie v7.1 without problem. So you first step is to ensure that the files in question do, in fact, contain the same compression formats.
    2) To do this, open the various files in the QT Player and check the "Format:" line in in the inspector window. Note if they are all the same and if not, note which ones work and which ones do not.
    3) If codecs/settings are all the same, used to work but no longer do, then check for QT component conflicts as detailed in numerous other discussions in this area.
    4) With regard to files previously imported "no longer render," this would sound normal if there are component conflicts present and/or a problem with thumbnails which, among other things, are likely use to "index" the original content during playback and export.
    5) If all else fails, can you provide a file "snippet" for testing on an external system? This may tell us/you if the problem is general or limited to just your systems/configurations.

  • Can FCP6 edit avi files?  FCE 3.5 does.

Can FCP6 edit avi files?  FCE 3.5 does.  I have Quicktime 7.6.2.   If I go to more recent Quicktine will  Final Cut Pro6 edit avi clips?  Thanks for any help.  It's confusing because my Final Cut Express does edit avi.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, FCE 3.5 does handle .AVI without rendering, the same as if it was a .mov. I just tried it to make sure I wasn't imagining it.  I don't understand how you would render it in FCP before working with it.  An AVI just shows up as black frames. And once you work with it wouldn't it become surrendered? I've been using QuickTime to convert from AVI to mov.  Is that the bet way.  I'm using 1080p video.  I wonder why dcs will do AVI, but not fcp??  Thanks again.

  • AVI Files in iMovie 09?

My Insignia HD DV produces high def avi files. I had to install special avi drivers in order to even see the video in QuickTime.
I haven't found a way to import avi files into iMovie 08. Is there way? Do I have to go with iMovie 09 to get this feature? Do I have to go with Final Cut Express to get this feature?

Check out Apple specification of supported camcorders by iMovie and FCE to get know if your device supported.
If not - you will need some external convertor

  • I'm trying to import avi files to FQP - why does it not work? I've tried DVX-converter and Perian without any luck.

I'm trying to import avi-files to FQP without any success. I'vw tried to convert it with quick-time and insalled Perian, with no luck. I'm new to FQP...

    FQP??
Never mind. Open one of your .avi files in QuickTime Player.
Press command and i keys to get the Inspector window.
Tell us what it says next to Format.
avi is just a container, we need to know the codec that was used to make them.

  • Importing AVI file into iMovie

I converted an .m4v file (13m31s long) to an .avi file so I can import it into iMovie for editing. All of this completed, I opened iMovie, went File > Import > Movies > ___.avi file. It showed the importing progress, and once it was completed nothing showed up anywhere! I tried 3 times, restarted my computer, updated iMovie, NOTHING! Please help :[

Yes I did try to import the .m4v file first. I used Prism to convert the video file to AVI. I am not entirely sure how to answer your question about the codec, but I believe it is an MPEG-4 ?
