Trying to Erase Drive

Hi,
I have a Macbook model A1181 running on version 10.5.8 that I would like to sell. I need to erase the hard drive but when I go through the disk utility option, the erase function is disabled. When I restart the computer while pressing the command+R buttons, nothing happens, except the utilities folder is opened upon start up. I've also tried erasing through the terminal but the error message I received was "Could not unmount disk for zeroing. Partitioning encountered error on disk disk0: Could not unmount disk (-10000)." If anyone is familiar with this error message or these issues, PLEASE HELP!

Hello there, favered4.
The following Knowledge Base article provides information on how to perform the erase, although written for Snow Leopard, the steps should be the same:
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard: How to Erase and Install

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

Iam trying to erase and reformat my old iMac, it has a 1Tb hard drive in it.  Error pops up and I noticed it is saying that the hard drive is 8Tb.How do I correct this?

I found another forum that had a solution.  Instead of using the recovery discs that came with the mac, use snow leopard to perform the actions that I needed to do.  It worked.  No input/output error and the software recognized the 1Tb hard drive.

  • Macbook - trying to erase HD

    Hello
I've been trying to erase the HD on my macbook as I am trying to trade it in.
I wanted to erase the hard drive and set it back to the original factory settings.  I have the original install DVD.  I've tried all the steps to doing this and it doesn't seem to work.  I insert the DVD, and click the install Mac OS X icon, then I click the "restart" button.  The computer will boot up but it stops right at the screen in that is the blue galaxy or whateve, sorry for the poor explanation on that part.
    The mac is
    10.5.8
2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo
I've been going crazy trying to figure out how to erase the drive.  I've tried from disk utility to holding down the C button when starting up the computer.  Anyone know of a way that I can completely reset the computer to factory settings so that all things are erased?
    Thanks

Thanks, but I already tried all the things on the site that you linked.  I tried everything before I posted on here.  I got a linke from Apple for other tips and didn't work

Should I just have the place I'm trading my computer into erase the drive for me?

  • Tried to erase OS X Yosemite on 2011 Macbook Pro, can't reinstall any OS

    Hi there
I have a 2011 13" Macbook Pro which was running OS Yosemite. I just tried to erase the hard drive, following the instructions here:
OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
However, when I got to this step:
Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.
It couldn't find any OS to reinstall, and said to contact Apple Care, which, unluckily for me, has run out. The screen is currently stuck on showing a ( / ) symbol.
Could anyone please advise what to do from here? Thanks a million!

If you literally wiped your hard drive as part of this adventure, and if the machine originally shipped with Snow Leopard, you will need to do one of the following:
Reinstall from the original disks that shipped with the machine, and upgrade to OS X 10.6.8 and all software updates
Purchase an OS X 10.6.3 retail disk from the Apple Online Store, then perform software updates until no more are available to get to 10.6.8.
Once you have 10.6.8 fully updated on your MBP, then via the Apple Online Store you can purchase an upgrade (content code for OS X App Store) to Lion, or Mountain Lion. Mavericks is not available. If you just want to reinstall Yosemite, you can obtain the upgrade from the OS X App Store application in your 10.6.8 Dock.
Understand that any downloadable OS X installer will self-remove after the installation. You may wish to copy the installer to an external drive before updating Snow Leopard to newer OS X releases.
Once you have sorted the above, perform a full external backup of your OS X installation.

  • Ext HD will not unmount when trying to Erase?

Ext Disk failure...Disk Utility didn't help, last comment was to Format Disk.  Don't need to save data on the ext disk.  When trying to erase and format the ext disk recive error message while trying to unmount.  Any way to unmount disk and start formatting?

Many have had your problem. Often if comes down to having a Western Digital internal. When you say your drive checks out OK with DU, does that include having a GUID partition map? If it doesn't and you fix it with DU, then there still is no certainty that the installer will see your drive. But, making it GUID is worth the try assuming it isn't. Be sure you are well backed up. I suggest that you make a bootable clone of your Leo installation on an external drive--assuming one is there.

  • Error erasing drive.

been having problems with mac , forum suggest cloning drive to external and erasing original and then back. cloned using CCC ok but when i tried to erase mac HD last step caused error message " Disk Erase failed. disk Erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk.
Has my life been saved by stopping me doing something i really shouldn't be doing or what?
    Help on this much appreciated.

Well - been trying to reproduce this (and dumped a perfectly good 10.3.9 volume in the process, I might add!) - but a bit difficult with a different set-up. I'm sure you will understand that this is not something that I can easily check, but a 'reverse clone' has previously worked ok with 10.4.n...
Erasing removes the directory information, but leaves the data on the drive to be overwritten by the new info., in your case the clone from your external drive (eventually, hopefully).
As, presumably, you are going through this whole process to end up with a reliable and, in essence, "de-fragged" drive, you should consider writing zeros to the drive first(select 'Security Options'). This, whilst intended as a security measure, has the benefit, apparently, of creating a new temporary list of the bad bits of the drive that are not to be used, to add to the permanent list created originally by the drive manufacturer.
Presumably you have tried the 'Unmount' button at the top of the Disk Utility window.
The name you choose is the volume name that appears on the desktop and in DU, etc. and can be as cool, or cute, as required.
If partitioning into one volume works, you can always try erasing with zeros later. Good Luck.

  • My install of maverick failed as disk is damaged and cannot repaired. I tried to erase disk but got error that disk cannot be umounted. Please help! Thank you very much.

My install of maverick failed as disk is damaged and cannot repaired. I tried to erase disk but got error disk cannot be unmounted. Please help. What can i do? Thank you very much.

First have you got a backup of your data? If not try to get one now while you have some access to the drive. The drive is probably faulty and will need to be replaced, without the backup you risk losing the data.
Have you a bootable external USB drive with Mavericks on it, if so boot from that and try and repair or erase the drive and reinstall Mavericks.
If you don't have Mavericks on an external drive,  boot from you Leopard DVD ( I am presumimg your profile is correct) and run Disk Utility from there, you may be able to erase the drive and reload Leopard. You can then install Mavericks. Even if all that works you will most likely need a new drive in the near future.

  • Erase driver from Networking list

    Hi,
I realized that in the Networking window appears a driver that I had not given access to be connected to my laptop, so I tried to erase it, but I can not. Does anybody knows about that? Thanks a lot!!!
    Enriqueta.

I got that, and the one I want to erase it is not in that list. I feel like I don´t know how to explain myself, I´m sorry!!! Let me try it again.
When I open the finder window I have a menu in the left side with icons, the first one says PowerBook G4..., next says Networks, and the last one says Macintosh HD. After that there is the list of the content of my laptop: Desktop, Applications, Documents, Music, etc, etc.
When I click in the Networks, it appears a list, and there is the one I do not know why is there, so I want to erase it. In other words, I don´t want this device is entering in my info.
I hope to be more especific this time, and I apologize to confuse you...

  • HT1338 Hi I have a dell colour laser printer ref 3115 cn. I have tried to load driver etc so I can use it with my new Macbook Pro. Its won't let me do it. How do I do it?

Hi I have a Dell colour laser printer ref 3115 cn. I have tried laoding the driver buy my MacBook Pro wont allow it?
    Any idea's?

The Dell specifications indicate that this is a multifunction device.  The printing portion is supposed to be able to use either PostScript or PCL 6.  You should be able to use a generic color PostScript PPD or use the generic pxlcolor driver from OpenPrinting.org.  There is not much chance of getting scanning to work with OS X.
The Gutenprint drivers will not provide what you need.  They only support balck and white printing for laser printers.

  • Trying to erase disk but has been 'unmounting' for a long time

Tried to erase disk before but then failed (could not unmount disk). I had Yosemite but when I restarted my MacBook pro it reverted to Mountain Lion (not a problem as I hated Yosemite). I assume that something was erased but when I go to download Mountain Lion it does not show any startup disks. The name of my startup disk has changed from Macintosh HD to APPLE HDD (lots of letters and numbers) Media. I went into Disk Utility again to erase the disk and it has just been 'unmounting disk' for an excessive amount of time with a blue and white load bar. I really have no idea what I'm doing and I need to use my laptop for essays so any help would really be appreciated.
    Thanks

boot up the machine and press R to get to the recovery mode.
    select the recovery disk
    open disk utility
    repair your disk.
    Erase your disk

  • I'm trying to erase everything but it's been loading all day. Help pls

Hi, I'm trying to erase everything from my iPhone so I can sell it and I selected the erase and everything (I know I sound very technical) and after clicking confirm the black screen with the white spinning circle came on. I left it for a couple of hours and it was still spinning so I thought it was stuck and reset it holding the buttons. When it came back on everything was still there so I tried again this morning at 10 and then went about my day, I just checked it and its still spinning! I know it said it can take a few minutes but its been 11 hours. Has anyone got any ideas? It's the second time it's doing it so I don't think just restarting will help. Does anyone know any other ways to wipe the phone? As you may have gathered I'm not that great with technology so if you've got any ideas explain them as simply as possible please lol.  Thanks in advance x

Settings/General/Reset - Erase all content and settings should take under 10 seconds on  4S. If it takes longer there's data corruption on the phone or the phone is jailbroken. What you have to do is restore the phone using iTunes and set up as a new phone. THEN go to settings again and Erase all content and settings.

  • HT4113 hello, I have an Iphone 4 and im trying to "erase all content and settings" but it asks for a passcode that i have no idea what is. its none of my previous passcodes ive ever had. What should i do to find out that passcode?

Hello im trying to "erase all content and settings" on my iphone 4, but it keeps asking for a 4 digit passcode and i have no idea what that passcode is. It's none of my previous passwords I've had on the phone since i've used it. How do i find out that Passcode?

Are you sure it's asking for a four digit code?
iOS 7 has a new feature called Activation Lock.  It requires your Apple ID and password before doing something like an iPhone reset.  This is a new anti-theft feature.

  • I tried to erase some of the email addresses that i have emailed  in the past that i no longer use. I went to window and all my email to addresses were deleted-can i get them back?

I tried to erase some of the email addresses that i no longer email to - i went to window to delete some and ALL of them were deleted . How do i get the addresses back?
    Thank you sooooo much!

Go to Mail Preferences>Accounts, click the '+' button below the list of accounts and insert the settings, username and password as instructed. Some account types can be set up automatically as soon as Mail knows the emails address (because the server settings are built in), in other cases you will have to get them from your ISP.
