Can you clarify what you mean by "plugging in"? Are you saying that you are pluggin in an Ethernet cable to the AirPort Express from the AirPort Extreme?
Or, does "plugging in" mean wireless?

Airport Express can't find internet during initial install to extend wifi from Airport Extreme
Currently have Airport Extreme but need to reinforce signal. Bought Airport Express. Only way to get Airport Express to find Internet is to connect directly to cable modem (even then, it did NOT show up on Airport Utility). Thus, have not been able to configure Express either wirelessly or using Ethernet.

Please power off the AirPort Extreme, wait a minute, then power it back up.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 8-10 seconds and release, then allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If you plan to leave the AirPort Express permanently connected to the AirPort Extreme, run the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
If you plan to have the AirPort Express connect using wireless only, then do not connect an Ethernet cable to the Express at any time
On the iPad home screen.....
Tap Settings
Tap WiFi
Wait a few seconds for a setting of Set Up a New AirPort Base Station to appear
Tap on AirPort Express just below that setting
The utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort Express will be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort Express. Keep the name short and simple, like Express, for example
Tap on Next
The utility will set the Express up for you automatically with the correct settings.
When you see the message appear of Setup Complete, tap Done
You are done, assuming that the AirPort Express is operating correctly. -
i just bought an airport express. i set it up and was able to be detected by my macbook, but i still cant connect wirelessly. the same goes when i tried my iphone. please help!
Is the status light green?
Your Airport device may be in Bridge Mode.
Airport Utility 6:
Open Airport Utility, select the Airport Express and click Edit. Navigate to the Network tab and change Router Mode to DHCP and NAT. Then click Update on the bottom right.
Airport Utility 5:
Open Airport Utility and click Manual Setup. Navigate to the Internet icon and change Connection Sharing to Share a Public IP Address. Then click Update on the bottom right. -

My airport express frequently drops the internet connection. Once I unplug it, and re-plug it in, my Macbook Pro17,IMac 24, iPad air and my wife's Acer 15 works fine until it drops the signal again. This happens on a regular basis. Is there anything I can do ensure it maintains the internet connection?

I would like to buy the AirPort Extreme and I wanted to purchase a repeater or extender with that, what would that product be?
The extender would be either another AirPort Extreme....if you want to match the performance of the "main" AirPort Extreme.....or....an AirPort Express.....which would not match the performance of the "main" AirPort Extreme.....but it would provide more wireless signal coverage.
Whether you choose the AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express to extend the signal, try to plan to connect the extender back to the "main" AirPort Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
If you must connect the main and extending devices using wireless only, then there will be a significant performance drop on the entire network due to to the limitations of extending a network wirelessly. Unfortunately, you lose about half of the potential speed on the network when you do this. -
I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!
The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:

If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed. -
What is the most sensible way to extend a wifi signal. I am in a cinderblock house and I have to buy something that will give me a single network but added range from my airport extreme base station.
Use an Airport Express. Configure the AEBS to allow it's wireless network to be extended. This is a dropdown menu option under the Wireless tab. Configure the Airport Express to Extend an Existing Network also under it's Wireless tab. You will need to provide the name of your network used in the AEBS as well as the network's access password.

I am successfully using the Express as extended (wireless) now with the Extreme as the primary base station. I will try it (wired) with an ethernet cable attached to the Express (Gen 1) LAN port (which you say also functions as a WAN port in this case). Is anyone using the apple tv 2 to connect other items to a home wifi network through the apple tvs ethernet port? I know you can use airport express to do this and I am already else where at home. Is this even possible? Can you run The HDMI cable to your tv and the optical cable to sound system at the same time?

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port). I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem. How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive? I don't have enough space to do that.
How did you move the music to the external drive? What exactly is on the drive? The entire iTunes folder or only music? If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier. You will need to add another device like an AirPort Extreme to provide additional wireless coverage in the house.
The only way to preserve bandwidth on a network would be to connect the two AirPort Extremes using an Ethernet cable connection.
While you can "extend" using wireless only, typically half of the bandwidth on the network is sacrificed when you do this.
