Trying to file share on home network

I have an AEBS running my home network. The network computers are two MacBooks connecting wirelessly, and an iMac which is connected to the AEBS via ethernet.
We can all see each other's Macs. From the iMac, I can drop files into the MacBooks' Public folders. However, the MacBooks cannot connect to the iMac. They can see it, but they get "Not Connected" when trying to navigate to the Public Folder. File Sharing is enabled on all the Macs. Privileges seem to be set correcly on all machines.
Why can't the MacBooks connect to a Public Folder on the iMac?

I noticed, too, that, when you click on the "Connect as..." button on either of the MacBooks, the dialog only gives you the option to connect as a registered user on the iMac. There's no option to connect as Guest.
When I do the same on the iMac (to connect to the MacBooks) I get the option to connect as either a guest or registered user.
FWIW, firewalls are off on all Macs.

  • Why won't my mac file share with my network?

I want to share my files throughout my home network, but my mac computer is the only one that is causing trouble. My other windows computers and the USB drive connected to my router is working fine. Whenever I try to look for these devices through the network folder on my mac computer, it just sits there and no other devices appear. On any other computer, they will show up within 5 seconds. I have let it sit for 5 minutes and I nothing has found up.
How can I get these computers and usb drive to show up. This mac has been resisting me the whole way when it comes to network.

  • Anyone know of a good IOS app that can play all media files across a home network, file share on a NAS or Windows PC??

anyone know of a good IOS app that can play all media files, MKV, AVI, Xvid with subtitles across a home network, file share on a NAS or Windows PC?? I know I have BS player free for android, works pretty good on my nexus tablet.  is there a good IOS one that anyone can think of that can browse the network?
or do I have to run transcoders?
I store some files on the windows PC and some files on a linux NAS that the windows PC maps to

    I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm not affiliated w/ the developer, just a happy user that gave up fighting the apple podcast app a while ago.  I used to have a bunch of smart playlists in itunes for my podcasts, and come home every day and pathologically synced my phone as soon as I walked in the door, and again before I walked out the door in the morning.
Since my wife was doing this too, we were fighting over who's turn it was to sync their phone.
Since I've switched to Downcast, I no longer worry about syncing my phone to itunes at all.  I can go weeks between syncs.
Setup a "playlist" in downcast (ex., "Commute") and add podcasts to that playlist.  Add another playlist ("walk" or "workout") and add different podcasts to that one.
Set podcast priorities on a per-feed basis (ex., high priority for some daily news feeds, medium priority for some favorite podcasts, lower priority for other stuff).  Downcast will play the things in the priority you specify, and within that priority, it will play in date order (oldest to newest).
Allegedly, it will also sync your play status to other devices, although that is not a feature I currently use and can't vouch for.  It uses apple's iCloud APIs, so to some extent may be limited by what Apple's APIs can do.

  • Want Wired for Internet, Wireless for file transfers on home network

I live in Dubai where internet in my house is connected straight from an ethernet port in the wall in numerous rooms. I have one wired connection hardwired from port to airport extreme which creates a wireless network for my laptops for internet.. apple tv et al. (home network 10.0.1.1 etc)
In the other room i have a mac mini which is directly hardwired to a second ethernet port. I use this machine for hard wired internet as its essentially downloading continuously for work.
    Looking at network setting states..
Wired connection states in network details : (To be used purely for hardwired internet)
    router address of (91.74.X.1)
    and ethernet port ip (91.74.x.21)
Wireless connection states in network details : (To be used purely for connection to home wireless network and streaming of files within internal networks)
    Router  (10.0.0.1)
    IP4V address is  (10.0.1.4)
    Subset mask is 255.255.255.0
I would like to force the mac mini to only use the wired ethernet connection for surfing/downloading, and also have an IP from the home network (10.0.1.2 etc) purely for file sharing/streaming with other computers on my home network.
    Is this possible ?

  • Sharing files over a home network...

I have a 2 year old iMac sitting in my basement.. I use it, and it is currently home to a ton of photos, videos and sound files (Logic as well as itunes). This week I plan on getting a Macbook to tootle with on the main floor (the basement is cold. ;))
I would love to be able to share files (and back them up as well.. kinda a nother issue).
As it stands right now, I have a 250 GB external drive which is backing up the iMac (but has hit it's limit).. need more space.
in addition I have a D-Link DLR 655... great little router. I believe it has Network capability in that I think through something called SharePort it can help you share files across a network.. no idea how.
So, yeah, that's about it.. anyone have any good tips in terms of building out a comprehensive backup system in conjunction with a file sharing capability across two macs (and maybe even a PC or two) across my home network?
Finally, how would that even work.. let's say I have an image on the imac, when I open it on the macbook, would I see it in iPhoto?
Lotsa questions.. thank you so much.
    Jay.

    Hi
Its not that obvious from the supplied information if you're talking about OSX Server? Perhaps your question might get more attention if you posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235
Which is the main Leopard Forum. You could also look here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=599
Click 'more options' in the Search field, select All, Last Year and key in 'networking'. Should reveal something? This article might help:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1433
What you're asking is simple enough. Connect all of your nodes (network devices; eg: macs, pcs, printers etc) to a switch or router or combination of the two. Depends on how many nodes you have. Wired (Ethernet) or Wireless will do. Make sure the router is providing IP addresses. Basically is its built-in DHCP Service switched on? By default most of them are. Once that's done and you've verified they can all access the internet, enable File Sharing. System Preferences > Sharing for the Macs and for the PCs right click the 'C' drive > Properties > Sharing.
Backup is a vast subject and its difficult to be concise. A lot depends on your skill set, means, budget and location. You could search this and the XServe/XServe RAID Forums as it has been discussed many times. A basic principle is to make sure you can effectively restore what you backup. Most people forget this when implementing an effective backup strategy. To start you off purchase a large enough external hard drive. Connect to all your macs and simply drag/drop what you want. If you have Leopard use Time Machine. For the PCs use something appropriate. Photos & Music can be transferred from mac to mac by simply enabling the options in the applications themselves. ITunes > Preferences > Sharing: Look for Shared Libraries; Share this Library. When you launch iPhoto hold down the option key. It's fairly obvious after that.
If you double-click on an image presented in the Finder (shared) on one mac then your mac will use whatever application it can find that it thinks can handle the file. For image files that could be Preview or Quicktime or if you have it installed an image editing application such as Photoshop. You can even define which application handles which type of file by control-clicking on the file itself and selecting 'Open With'. This is fairly basic 'how to use your mac' stuff which you should know?

  • How do you access files FROM a home network TO a CLIENT computer using "internet sharing" from a mac ?

    Hi.
I just created a small network: 2 pcs and 1 mac.
2 pcs are using windows XP
1 Mac is using OS X
I would like to know how to access files from my pc1 to pc2 from my network.
Pc2 obviouslys is a client behind the intenet sharing my mac is providing.
I tried looking for the info online but most of the search brigns out "internet sharing" or "file sharing."
    Any help would be great.

The following may help with the file sharing issues: OS X Mavericks: Share your files

  • 10.9.2 Mavericks and can no longer connect to our SMB file share on the network.

Smb was working under 10.9.1. Now  smb and usning the finder I get "connection failed".  Both of my NAS are not out when i am using my mac book pro  thru the wifi connection.    Is any one else have the same problem?

Same story here - smb:// worked under 10.9.1, but the Update 10.9.2 broke it.
    Some facts:
    Mac Book Pro Retina 2012
Network connection is over WLAN (The connection is very stable and no issues else where)
The issue seems to be caused when there are larger files (> 500MB) in the share
smb:// works for shares with lots of folders but only small files in them
smb:// and cifs:// are both almost unusable
smb://  shows a blank screen for ages- Finder will eventually hang up
cifs:// will connect fast (wow!), but the connection is very unstable for larger files
The funny part is, that Mavericks (pre 10.9.2) was the first OS X which fixed most SMB issues of its predecessor. (SMB2 was somwhat slow, but quite usable) Now, I can not really use my Mac to work...
Moral of the story, I think I will switch to Ubuntu 14 when it is released in April - it should support HDPI Displays.

  • Best Setup For Frequent File Sharing On Home Network?

    Hi guys,
I'm setting up an office at my house with multiple computers on a network, and we'll be sharing files over the network frequently. My question is, what is the best setup for this?.. Fastest transfer of files, stable wireless connection, etc.
All of the computers will be Macs (iMacs and Macbooks).
We'll be editing videos/photos on the computers. (Potentially large files)
Is the easiest setup just to have the main computer attached to a good router, setup file sharing on all other computers, and just do it that way?
Or would it be better to create some sort of NAS?
Also can someone reccomend a good router for this type of scenario?
    Thanks for any help given.

NAS is the right tool for this job.
It is expensive but the market leaders.. synology and QNAP have really been doing it for long time and the ability to do file store/sharing and most importantly backup in these is excellent. • Trying to create a hybrid home network  one macbook pro, one pc

Cant get pc to recognize airport extreme base station. Only about 5 ft apart, so not a distance or interference issue. i downloaded airport utility to the mac, then copied to the PC.

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.

  • Trying to set up a home network

I used to have an iMac G4 and a PowerBook G4 and a magicolor 2430DL laser printer hooked up to a small network via an ethernet switch. I have a slow dialup account with CWNET. I replaced the PowerBook with a MacBook and got an Airport Extreme Base Station. I unplugged the phone line from the Mac and plugged it into the BS. First I figured out how to get the MacBook online through the BS. It was challenging, but I finally discovered that I had to open the Airport menu in the menu bar, go down to the BS, slide over to Connect, and then it would dial into my ISP. There was no Connect button in Internet Connect like the Help told me there would be. OK, so I'm online with my Book. I think the next thing I did was to connect the BS to the network switch. To my pleasant surprise the iMac was online in no time. (I think. So much has gone wrong since I may be imagining it.) Then I figured I'd see if I could print. The Book wouldn't see the printer until I connected the printer directly to the BS with USB. But then the iMac wouldn't print until I connected the printer back to the hub with ethernet. Then I tried going back online with the iMac, but it won't go. The location is set to Ethernet. Then I tried to network the Book with the iMac and they don't see each other any more.
What do I need to do so that the iMac can be online via the BS, the Book can see the iMac, and both the Book and iMac can print?

The MacBook is wireless, and the iMac is wired. Since it is a G4 flatpanel I figured it would do AE so I bought a card and then after waiting a few weeks after I got the card I tried to install it, but my iMac doesn't do Extreme, and it was too late to take the card back so now I'm stuck with a new AE card that I don't know what to do with. I waited because the card came long before the MacBook and AEBS came, so there was no rush to put it in or so I thought.
Anyway, I have the 5-port switch connected to the LAN port of the AEBS. I just connected the printer to the AEBS via USB. The printer is still connected to the switch also. Now the MacBook prints.
But the iMac doesn't. Let's go to Printer Setup and delete the printer and Add it. For some reason there are two different names that show up for the same printer. Lets see what happens when I use the same name the MacBook uses... Now the iMac prints. But does the iMac print through the AEBS so that I can disconnect the printer from the hub and free up one of the ports? Yes! It is working!
Now can I still get online with the iMac and still connect to the MacBook with the iMac? It is online. It is connected to the MacBook! Oh man this is so sweet.

  • Can't I use the TimeCapsule-harddrive as a "nas-sverver" and put files there to share within my home network?

I was told at a store that I could use the Time Capsule as a "nas-server" and share files within my home network. Isn't that possible? I cant move files from my computer to the Time Capsule. Is it only when I'm connecting another external harddrive by usb that it works? My 3 tb is kind of useless if that´s so.

    We recommend against it..
But you can do it.. simply make sure that file sharing in the TC is working and turn on the guest account.
What computers or devices are you having issues accessing the TC?
It does need the occasional reboot.. maybe daily.. to give it a swift kick and wake up.
If you are running lion.. please install the 5.6 utility which you will find makes life much easier.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
The issue is, the TC has no way of backing itself up. And TM cannot backup a network drive.. so any files that are only on the TC are going to be lost if it breaks down.. which one day it will.
Please do consider what it is designed to do..
Q3 here is a good place to start.

  • Running Forte via a network file share (Part 1)

    G'Day
I would like to run Forte via file a share on all suitable machines.
Any experiences from the list would be much appreciated in this regard. (Is
it possible? Feasible - well let's find out...)
Here is what I expect I will need to do:
    1. Need a 60MB file share on the network - check
    2. Need a SOE ("typical") Windows95(8) PC - working on it
    3. Will need to install Forte runtime on this SOE PC using the file share as
root drive - waiting on 2
    4. Now test some local applications to run on this PC using forte via the
file share - waiting on 3
Q: What are the implications of running forte via the file share.
All I want is to run inhouse developed applications on any PC without having
to install Forte on each and every PC!
How much file transfer can I expect forte to generate?
If this works I'll have to work out how to set other SOE PC to use Forte via
    the fileshare.
I expect I'll have to set registry settings. Anything else? But more to that
    in Part 2.
Let's see how this works out first.
    TIA,

    Hi Dirk,
This may be harder than it seems. Forte uses a number of
files stored over a number of different directories all starting
with forte_root. Some of these files are only read, others are
also updated. Some have to be local, others don't.
We have done two things that are related to this.
    1) Our client partition is manually copied to a file server.
Clients use ftexec with a parameter to indicate the inter-
preted code repository, which is stored on this file server.
The client partition isn't installed on any of the clients.
    a) you can't use the launcher
    b) you can only deploy a new version if everyone quits
    their application
    2) Out unix development machine has three different forte
environments on it, each using their own directory tree.
They all have their own 'appdist', 'userapp' and 'repos'
directory, but other directories are symbolic links to the
same, single instance. Within 'appdist' and 'userapp', the
directories for 'forte', 'fscript', 'econsole', etc. are also sym-
    bolic links.
This way we minimize the duplicating of files, yet each en-
vironment thinks it has everything itself.
