Trying to find a mail attachment in Time Machine
I deleted an email that had a very important pdf attachment. The sender isn't available to resend the attachment, so I need to get it.
I went into Time Machine and can find the actual email, and I can see the attachment. But I haven't a clue as to how to get that attachment moved to my current desktop. I'm assuming that the attachment is cached somewhere (or not).
Can someone tell me how to find that attachment in a previous backup, then restore it (or move it, or whatever) so that I can read the full pdf attachment. I usually save the attachments, but for some idiotic reason, I did not.
There is nothing you can do to TM.
But frankly I would give it up. There is something wrong so the chances of this being a usable backup is small.
I am slightly unclear.. you have stated network data.. but I thought this is a USB disk plugged directly into the computer?? Is it something else?
Please indicate the exact setup of the backup disk.
Please show me how it is formatted and is it GUID partitioned?
I have found USB disks can be poor under Mountain Lion.. but work fine in Snow Leopard.. I don't know the reason.. But I think you can stop the backup now..
You stated you did all the steps I indicated.. did that include the verification of the source and destination drive??
Did you load the widget and what is the log showing?
What about trying it differently.. if you want a backup .. do a disk image with superduper.. just so you have a backup..
Then I would try a network backup with the USB disk plugged in and shared to the network from the mini.
You can then do a TM backup to network drive.

HT201250 Find Mail message in time machine
I'm trying to find a specific message on Time Machine but each time I click on a previous day the window resorts itself and makes the window smaller so that I have to re sort to see if my sender is there. Can I restrict the search to only my sender?
ThanksEnter a search in the Mail browser window, then enter Time Machine. The results of the search will be shown in each snapshot.

Where do i find mail on a time machine copy
where do i find lost mail on a time machine copy
When you open Finder and then from the Time Machine Icon in the menu bar hold the option key and Browse Other Backup Disks. then ⇧⌘G, then ~/Library/Mail/V2, you're not seeing the folder with your old emails? (don't open TM from Mail)
If you see your old mail, then this may be a long-way, but....
BACKUP your current email
Log into the Guest Account (->System Preferences->Users & Groups)
Open Finder, then from the Time Machine Icon in the menu bar hold the option key and Browse Other Backup Disks. then ⇧⌘G, then ~/Library/Mail/V2 and restore the V2 Folder
Now start Mail and set up your accounts (all your emails from the TM should be restored)
You can then Mail->Mailbox->Export Mailbox and save to your Desktop (do this with each Mailbox)
Copy these exported mailboxes to a USB drive
Log into your regular account.
Open Mail and File->Import Mailboxes.
Hope this helps. -

Finder shows wrong disk space (Time Machine turned off)
Hi,
I have a disk space issue with my Mid '11 MacBook Air. The actual free space in my Hard Drive is much more than the space what Finder reports.
After trying almost everything i knew (Turned off Time Machine, used Disk Utility/DaisyDisk/OmniDiskSweeper), I have no success so it is starting to be annoying.
Here is the result of the du -chxd 1 / command (as root):
bash-3.2# du -chxd 1 /

The Finder says i have only 23 GB of free space:

How to manually retrieve mail messages from time machine in Lion?
I just did a clean reinstall on Lion and want to import things from time machine piecemeal. As far as I know, in order to access the mail documents on the computer's hard drive, in the Finder I need to go to Go-->Go to Folder... and then type ~/Library. Then I have access to the "Mail" folder with the data. How can I access this folder that's on my external harddrive? I don't have the "Go" function and I don't know how to get there manually. My hidden files are shown.
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The best way to restore mails is to use Time Machine.
1. Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk, select the external disk and see > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html
2. Open Mail and open Time Machine. Navigate and restore the mails you want -

How do I restore smtp mail setting from time machine?
I'm using Lion 10.7.4
Messages and incoming mail works fine. It's just the smtp mail setting that's the problem.
Any help greatly appreciated. The mail rules are stored in your ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~mail/Data.MailData folder, in a plist called SyncedRules.plist.
If you're signed into iCloud D&D, that's where you'll find it.
If you're *not* signed into iCloud, then you probably have a folder called something like ~/Library/Mobile Documents.####### where the # signs are actual numbers. Digging into that folder, you'll fild the SyncedRules.plist file.
Thing is, I don't know how Mail uses rules without iCloud; if there's a "local" rules location. There probably is, but someone else who's not using iCloud may have to help you there... -
I am trying to restore my Calendar from my Time Machine back up. I can get through the process but at the end I get a message that Calendars cannot be removed or amended as it is required by OS10, there does not appear to be any option to authorise the backup or change. How can I get round this roadblock?

Can I find an iphoto events in time machine
Using a macbook pro with Lion 10.7 how can I find an iphoto event in time machine hard drive back up. When I look in picture folder for a back up date I see some individual pictures and an icon for iphoto library. I thought clicking on that would show me iphoto application with the events just as it looks in current time only with the events of the past date. It does not.
Not really - you need to restore the iPhoto library then open it with iPhoto - iPhoto can not access TM backups - they have to be restored first

I can't find Firefox password data in Time Machine?
I upgraded to Firefox 7 today & stupidly deleted the extensions folder of Firefox 6 before doing so. I have attempted to restore bookmarks & password data using Time Machine but I can't find either file. I've done Finder searches and looked manually. There is no Firefox folder in Library, only one named Mozilla, which contains an empty extensions folder. Finder searches find nothing. I know that I am looking for key3.db and signons.sqlite but where have they gone? All help much appreciated.

Thanks Pondini but that's the point: there is no Firefox folder in Application Support, either in Lion or in Time Machine's backups, no matter how far back I go. There is only a Mozilla folder which is empty. I can locate the Firefox folder in Lion by going through Firefox/troubleshooting/show in finder so it's obviously hidden for some reason.
For some reason, most things in <home folder>/Library are treated as "system files" by a Finder Search, so it won't show them unless you specifically tell the search to include them. Thus it's usually easiest to just navigate to the folder you want.
And in Lion, the <home folder>/Library folder is hidden by default; you can see it via the Finder by pressing the Option key while selecting the Go item in the Finder's menubar. (You can make it permanently visible by copying chflags nohidden ~/Library into a Terminal window.)
I don't know how to do the equivalent in Time Machine. Any ideas?
In Time Machine, the <home folder>/Library folder should appear by default, and you should be able to "drill down" inside it to find the Firefox folder inside the Application Support folder.
If it doesn't, try selecting <home folder>/Library in the Finder as above, then Enter Time Machine. That should show the folder and contents. -

Where do I find the Library in a Time Machine backup after Lion installation?
Where do I find the Library in a Time Machine backp after Lion installation?
You can access the backups of another computer by holding down the option key and selecting "Browse other Time Machine disks" from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. As for getting to the Library folder, you would have to use something like the free application "Tinker Tool" (not "Tinker Tool System") to make hidden files visible in the Finder, then enter Time Machine.

Yes, at least it is saved on my machine. iMac 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Cannot see why it should be any different for Mountain Lion. Incidentally, you are three updates short according to your profile.
