Trying to get a 2nd display to work with my MacBook

Hey,
I have the late 2008 aluminium MacBook. I'm trying to use a 1440x900 monitor as an alternative display for it using a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. However, I can't seem to get it working. The monitor either just shows a stock background, or if I use mirroring, it drops the resolution to the same as my MacBook.
Ideally, what I'd like to do, is use my magic mouse and keyboard plugged into my MacBook with the lid closed, but the display appearing on the bigger monitor. Can I do this?
Thanks

Both is expected behaviour when using external display with your MAcBook.

Apple calls this closed clamshell mode. See here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131

  • Apple thunderbolt display can work with a macbook pro 2009?

Apple thunderbolt display can work with a macbook pro 2009 (mini display port? The image passes through the mini display port to the monitor, but the connections (Firewire, USB, ethernet) do not work. Can you confirm?

I'd love to get confirmation if this is the case too.   I was all ready to buy the new iMac until I found I couldn't use it as an external monitor for my DisplayPort-based MacBook Pro.  And then I was all ready to buy the new display.
I really hope Apple hasn't restricted this to purely Thunderbolt-equipped Macs. I know I'll end up upgrading my MacBook at some point but I can't do so just yet, and this means I'll have to go for some third-party display, camera, speakers etc for the new Mac Mini which is crazy.

There's a new driver bundle for OSX 10.6 that you might need to install, the HP link seems to be failing at the moment but there's a version of it here: HP_Installer_Scanjet_v2.4.3_Ph4.dmg
There's a piece on the HP Forum about it here (some folks have problems installing ...)

  • Trying to get a 3rd Party Router working with BT I...

    Hi,
I'm trying to move away from the HHub5 on our FTTC BT Infinity connection (40Mb/s). Eventually I settled on a TP-Link WDR 3600 N600 - the flavour which is happy to talk to cable modems and take an OpenWRT install.
So far I've hooked up a BT OpenReach "white box" modem using the HHub's RJ11 lead, going from the DSL filter into the OpenReach modem's DSL socket.  The modem's DSL LED lights up solid green - which I presume is good?  The TP-Link router is up & running fine with OpenWRT installed, I can connect to it over WiFi and I've hooked up its WAN connection to the OpenReach modem's LAN1 socket (LAN2 is blanked out).
But whatever I put in the router's PPPoE settings I just can't get an internet connection to come up.  So far I've used '[email protected] (as it's set on the HHub) and a few other suggestions from the forums including 'anything you like' @btinternet.com and @btbroadband.com - nothing seems to get the connection going.
Is there something I've missed or can anyone suggest a solution?
    Many thanks,
    Steve
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry to answer my own question, but in case it helps anyone in the future:
I had to put my username in the username AND password fields - same details in both.  I've not seen this written  anywhere online, everyone says to leave the password field blank as it's unused.
So to recap - this is what got my TP-LINK WDR3600 (OpenWRT based) router working with Infinity: stick [email protected] in the PPPoE usernamd AND password fields.

  • I need help getting my Thunderbolt display to work with Windows 7 through Bootcamp.

I recently bought a thunderbolt display and it works great in my Mac environment.  But I recently added Bootcamp and Windows 7 (I need since my Broker Dealer only uses Internet Explorer).  Unfortunately, I can't seem to get Windows to recognize my Thunderbolt display.  Today, I spent 2 hours with a very kind advisor from Apple Support but we didn't have any success.
    Here's my setup:
MacBook Pro (purchased new in 2011) with i7 processor
    Thunderbolt Display
    Lion OS (all updates installed)
Bootcamp with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (all updates installed)
With the help of Apple Support, I downloaded and reinstalled (through the repair option) all the Bootcamp drivers.  I shut down my computer, plugged in the Thunderbolt display, turned it on and booted into Windows 7.  When the Windows Welcome screen appears, it shows on my Thunderbolt display for about 2-3 seconds.  But the thunderbolt quickly goes black.  My MacBook Pro changes to a 640x480 resolution and the Thunderbolt remains blacked out--with no signs of even a single flicker.  Once the computer finishes the start-up, my MacBook Pro remains in a 640x480 resolution, with no option to change the resolution (it's grayed out in Windows control panel).  If I unplug the Thunderbolt cable from my MacBook pro, the high resolution of my MacBook pro snaps back to normal.
To me, this seems like some type of driver problem but I must be missing something simple because it appears that Thunderbolt works with Bootcamp and Windows 7--based on some of the readings I've found here in the Apple support community.  I'm most appreciative of anyone's help here.

  • Trying to get my sound card to work with ArchLinux

Okay, let me tell you my problem. I'm still somewhat of a noob when it comes to linux so don't be hard on me . And, yes that's half of my problem, anyways I've got a sound card called the Soundblaster X-FI USB and I've been trying it to get it to work with the alsaconf command which hasn't worked of course Let me point out that whenever I use my backup flashdrive with PuppyLinux it the Alsaconf inside of it see's the card that I'm using and automatically sets it up.. Plus whenever I type the ' cat /proc/asound/cards ' command I get this..
    0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xefffc000 irq 21
    1 [S51            ]: USB-Audio - SB X-Fi Surround 5.1
Creative Technology SB X-Fi Surround 5.1 at usb-0000:00:1d.2-2, full speed
*(The first one being my dead onboard audio)
So please help me out here I really want to have sound again and hey maybe I'll learn something new about linux!

there's some experimental driver that maybe makes it work with alsa, see here:

My card is a USB which isn't compatible with the driver that they include. So no help there ;(. I've loaded Ubuntu recently and it has worked perfectly with my soundcard (Creative X-FI USB Surround 5.1) right out of the box. I personally think there has to be a way to get it to work in Archlinux since it worked in Ubuntu...
Although. I suppose I could just use Ubuntu but I'm more of a fan of Arch. So does anyone have any idea what Ubuntu used as in drivers wise to get my card to work in linux??

  • Trying to get lexmark Z708 printer to work with Snow Leopard

I've just set up a friend's new Mac, using 10.6.4; he's moved from Windows with his Lexmark X708 printer. I can't find any Z708 printing drivers that will work with SnowL - not on the installation 'extras' on the dvd, nor on apple or lexmark's pages (the 708 driver for 10.4 on lexmark's site doesn't work). is there a workaround or do i have to persuade him to fork out yet more for a new printer?

  • How Can I Get an 23" Cinema Display to work with a MacBook Pro 15"?

A 23" Cinema Display (M8536) will not display with and adapter connected to a MacBook Pro 15" (mid 2010). Adapter used is Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. What's wrong?

They removed the audio input, starting from your model, you will need an USB interface, there are may, and it depends on how high of quality you need.
This works for most applications, unless you are trying to record "music quality"

  • Trying to get a Wasp 800 to work with an iPad 2

    Good Morning All,
Recently, my department has purchased a few iPad 2's, and we'd like to use a bluetooth scanner.  One of our guys purchased a Wasp 800 thinking it would work because it's bluetooth.  I tried it and called customer support twice this morning and didn't have any luck.  I was curious if anyone here had any insight on this issue.
    http://www.waspbarcode.com/scanners/cordless_barcode_scanner.asp

Just out of curiosity, read the wasp manual, and see what the bt protocols it uses are, then look at the specs for the pad3 and see if they are in the new one.  Or, better yet, take you wasp down to the apple store next week, and try it there, see if it connects.
Won't help your issue with the current 2s, but would at least give you a hint about future purchases.
There were some older threads along the same lines, and while I cannot find it, someone did get a connect using a wired via the cck to the pad.
You may just have bought the wrong scanner.  See the link below.

  • How can I get a dual display to work with Keynotes?

I'm using an iMac 24" output to a projector. I want to have Keynotes presentation on the iMac mon while I demo with various softwares, iPhoto, on the projection screen. Basically, I want to run the Keynote presentation and forward the slides on the iMac24" as a reference to the demos I'm doing on the large screen.
Keynotes does not seem to let me do that. It wants to take up both screens.
    Help is appreciated.

You are right: When in the presentation mode, Keynote normally wants to use both screens, depending on your Keynote Preferences settings.
Although I haven't tried this, the following procedure might be a way to accomplish what you want. It's worth a try, and at least it can do no harm.
    1) In Keynote /Preferences / Slideshow window, check the box "Allow Expose, Dashboard, and others to use screen. This lets other applications use the display on your computer while Keynote is in the Presentation mode.
    2) In the same menu, check the button "Present on primary display." This will put the presentation onto your iMac screen.
    3) In the Keynote / Preferences / Slideshow window, do NOT check the box "Use alternate display to view presenter information." This means that your slideshow will run, but you will not be able to see the "presenter information" to preview what's coming next. You'll need to run your slideshow by memory.
    4) The other applications you want to show on the projector (which you assign as the "alternate" display in the System Preferences / Displays menu) you will need to drag them over to that display before you launch the Keynote Presentation - just as you would do if you were using two monitors.
Others have asked similar questions, so if this works, please let us all know. If you have to "fiddle" with it a bit, please let us know that too.
    Good luck.

  • SB X-Fi XtremeGamer on Vista, trying to get Virtual Midi Keyboard to work with Reaso

I've got a Vista 32 quad core computer with the Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card. I'm trying out Reason 4, an advanced music production program that needs a midi keyboard. I downloaded Maple Midi and Virtual Midi Keyboard so I can try it out without buying a real midi keyboard.
The Virtual Midi Keyboard makes no sound when the Maple Midi ports are selected which are the only ones that Reason 4 can see, and when selected Reason acknowledges when I press a note on the keyboard though no sound. the other Midi ports 2-SB X-Fi Synth A, B etc make sound but Reason 4 can't see them.
And then using Soundfont Bank Manager I see a virtual keyboard and it shows the 4 Maple Midi ports and makes noise with any of them selected but Reason 4 can't seem to see or select this virtual keyboard.
Any ideas? I'm new to music and audio editing, so it may be something obvious that I've overlooked.

Yes, its showing up in the device manager and states its working properly with no errors, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling it in 3 of my PCI slots.
The first time I installed it, I uninstalled my onboard sound like the intructions stated before I installed the new one, why I had to reformat and start from scratch so I can manually disable it in the BIOS because all that is on my partition.
The only thing that comes up with the card to pick from is my MIDI player, but nothing else, but even with that I get no sound because I cant raise the volume on any volume control.

  • Trying to get Oblivion and Morrowind to work with Commercial Wine

I hope this message is helpful and I hope to get some feedback about what could be improved about my approach. I researched some stuff I desided to do a free trial of Crossover "The commercial Wine" Which is more GUI and easier to configure. I've got Oblivion to install Sound works, graphics are supurb but it is VERRRY SLOW I've heard of Open GL but couldn't find it in the local community repo. Oblivion needs from what I understand is direct3d or the ActiveX that installs with the game disk. If there are any solutions. I'd be glad to hear them.  Does Windows directX hinder the running of PC Games on a Linux system or would it be better to get the latest optimized Linux i686 DirectX?

Does Windows directX hinder the running of PC Games on a Linux system
    Yes
would it be better to get the latest optimized Linux i686 DirectX?
There is none. directx is strictly microsoft stuff.
Wine translates directx calls to opengl calls on the fly.
The easiest way if wine doesn't work is to buy cedega, which would have pretty up to date directx "support".
