Trying to get icons back!!

i'm new @ this!
i must have pressed something weird and lost several of my program icons from the bottom of my desktop! i'm trying to get them back! is there a way!?! please help me!

Likewise, if you grab them from the dock and move them towards your desktop and let go, they go poof and are gone again. That may have been how you lost them inn the first place.

With respect, you actually cannot store folders on the left side of the Dock - only on the right side. I wonder if you're talking about Launchpad, which looks like a silver rocket and shows you your installed applications? It's not actually a shortcut to the Applications folder, though. You can certainly drag Launchpad into the left side of the Dock from the Applications folder.

I can't migrate from a time machine Back up. I select my TC and it says "some backups can't be opened. Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. It appears that some backups are already in use. If you don't see the backup you need, make sure it is not currently mounted by another machine and try again."

Read the section E about restore issues.

But you should be able to mount the sparsebundle and backup the major items if they are not damaged. You might also do a disk verify to see if the corruption can be repaired.
Have a look here also for restore of selected items.

PhotoBooth is not on the iLife disk which has iMovie and Garage Band.  PhotoBooth is integrated into OSX, so it's not going to be easy to get back.  You'll need to get it from the recovery disk or partition.  Which OSX are you using so we can point you in the right direction.  NEVER delete any of the OSX programs.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
See the iLounge Article link at the end of the table at the bottom. That can usually recover the media even when the device's library is shot.

  • Deleted Ichat, now trying to get it back

I had a virus on my computer which i've deleted and got my computer back to normal, but at the time my computer's memory full and had some 50kb left, and in needing to write a term paper i opted to delete ichat for the memory. now that i have like 25gb back i'd kind of like to use my isight and ichat, but in trying to download it, only ichat av 2.1 is offered and when i do that it says it can't find ichat av 2.0 and stops the download. does apple still offer 2.0 or do i have to buy a complete system update to get it back?

  • Trying to get Windows back after Boot Camp repartition + Ubuntu 14.04LTS install + rEFIt install...

    Hello, Boot Camp troubleshooter folks.
Again I come to you with a variation of the same refrain so many others have said. I haven't quite found my exact version of it, so here's mine:
I'm taking an online class that required me to make a third partition for Ubuntu. I'm running a MacBook Pro(6,2) from Mid-2010, running OS X 10.9.5. (Although I'm currently downloading upgrade to Yosemite as we speak. I figured, hey, if my MBR's already messed up, upgrading to Yosemite's not gonna make it any worse.)
I've got a 500GB HDD. It's had 100GB sliced off for Windows 7 Professional x64 for about two years. This was done by following the prompts in Boot Camp Assistant as directed.
Then, a few weeks ago, I ignored the warnings by Disk Utility and sliced off another 15GB off of my remaining 400GB for OS X into the smallest reasonable slice I could set aside for working in Ubuntu. On top of this, I also added the program "rEFIt." So, now, when I boot up my computer, by default, rEFIt comes up and shows me three different icons for getting into Linux, an icon for getting into OS X, an icon for getting into Windows, and an icon for getting into the OS X Recovery Disk.
Ubuntu and OS X work fine. If I select "Windows," I get that "No operating system found" for whatever it says prompt, and I can't do anything.
If I try to do the standard Boot Camp operation (holding down Option when I restart), I see the same list of options I saw before I installed Ubuntu, except again Windows doesn't work.
It seems as though I've shot myself in the foot by my order of operations, since I can't delete either partition in Disk Utility now, I'm guessing because there are too many sectors in the mind of OS X looking at the MBR. So, while Ubuntu and OS X work, I've got a 100GB brick where a functional Windows installation used to be.
The NTFS drive is still listed on my Desktop in OS X, too. All of the files are intact. But squeezing that Ubuntu partition between the OS X and Windows ones has created too many sectors, and I think I need to do that hybrid MBR business.
Here are my results per Loner T's standard instructions:

Now, since this computer's a Mid-2010, there's definitely a new MacBook Pro purchase in my future within the next 1-2 years. I will not make this same mistake again: On the next machine (assuming no inevitable issues with the Apple hybrid drive), I'll do the current OS X version, a sizeable partition done with Boot Camp of Windows 10, and then VirtualBox running Ubuntu. None of this triple partition cr

Well I was lucky enough to get an appointment to see someone at my "local" (40 minutes away) Apple store today. He said there were Windows and Mac files on the same partition. It was a mess...
Anyhow, he reinstalled Leopard for me and I'm back up and running.

  • Hard drive "unallocated" - trying to get it back

Please advise if  "hardware" is not the right category for this issue.
I have a Pavilion dv2660se running Vista 32bit Home Premium.  It all started with a system freeze over a week ago.  When attempting to reboot, the system would not come up - all attempts to repair or restore to a previous point failed.  I used my recovery disks to reinstall the system, but this failed.  So, after "chatting" with HP support, I ordered a new set of recovery disks.  When they arrived, I started the system restore with them.  After about 4 hours of loading software, the system seemed to get into an infinite loop of staying up for about 10 seconds then rebooting.  I was able to restart in Safe mode and ultimately in Selective Startup Mode with the installation program disabled so that I could look around.
I realized once I was in Disk Management that the C drive was showing only a total of 25GB (out of a 250GB drive), with only 556MB free.  There were no other drives or partitions shown.  The remaining 209GB showed as "unallocated" and I could not figure out a way to access it.  Just for kicks, I ran the hard drive diagnostics, and it showed everything as passing.
So, I got on "chat" again with HP support.  After some back and forth, I asked if I needed to reformat the entire drive.  They said yes, and had me run the recovery disk again to do that.  Well, there is no option for formatting the entire drive on the recovery disk, so it is going back through the restore process again until it gets to a point where I can look at things again.  And Chat said to get back with them at that point.
I'm not sure I want to go there again!  Does anyone have suggestions for next steps once the system gets back to a point where I can access it?  Appreciate any advice!
    This question was solved.

Got it fixed!  I took a chance and got back on chat, this time with an agent who seemed to understand my problem.  He took me through a series of steps Shrink Volumes and Extend Volumes that then showed my total hard drive.  So, other than now having to go through the restore process again, I should be good!

  • Updated mess!  I updated my I4s to ios 7.0.2 and it deleted all my videos, apps and songs!  Tried to get them back but said I had to buy them all!  UGH!  I tried to reinstall but says it is up to date!  Please help!

I updated my Iphone 4s to the IOS 7.0.2 and i have having a lot of trouble.  My apps are not found, neither is my music or videos.  When I tried to reload the purchased there was NOTHING there!  I need help!  I did try to reupdate and it said that the software was up to date

If it's in recovery mode, the data is already gone. Why did you never back up your important data?

  • Getting Icons Back on Desktop

when i download an image from the internet by "save image as jpeg", my computer, on which i did this all the time without any problem, is saving them but not as jpegs. in fact, not as anything. just a blank "white" icon. in order to turn them into jpegs, i have to put them through iPhoto, which i never had to do before.
also, some of my previously saved images are thumbnails of the actual photos while some just have the jpeg icon.
can someone please advise me (1) how to get the computer to save images downloaded from the internet as jpegs again; and (2) get them all to be thumbnails on the desktop?
in OS9, i once fixed the "blank icon" problem by resetting the PRAM but i don't know if that's still applicable in Jaguar and i don't want to mess anything up.
    thanx.

What browser are you using? Safari doesn't seem to give me the option of "save image as jpeg" -- it just saves the image to the desktop in whatever form it was already.
If you ctrl-click the blank icon, select "Open With..." and force it to use Preview, does the image appear? If so, then the problem is just the name of the file -- make sure it has a '.jpg' extension.
To get all files with a .jpg extension to show as thumbnails on the Desktop, select Finder > View > Show View Options, then check "Show Icon Preview" in the pop-up menu.

  • Trying to get iphoto back on a post-Mavericks computer.

Have a circa 2009 laptop that ran a bought and paid for version iphoto just fine.
Foolishly tried to upgrade to Mavericks and discovered it turned the laptop into a virtual paper weight.
Rolled back to Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Iphoto was not included with that system disc, and now I cannot find iphoto without sourcing and buying it individually from a 3rd party.
The computer was registered. Apple knows the system and that iphoto came with this computer, but apparently I can not just download the software again.
Is this OK? Or is it incredibly lame?

Once an application was going it was fine, but opening or switching between applications caused the beach ball to often spin for minutes at a time. I hadn't anticipated such a performance drop when I suggested upgrading to Maverick's.
That is frequently due to applications or tools, that install system modifications, but have not been updated to Mavericks compatible versions. These system modifications can cause hanging, crashes, and memory leaks. Look for device drivers, plug-ins, preference panes, that you installed, while still running Snow Leopard or earlier.  The tool, Etrecheck,  that Old Toad mentioned, can help you to track down such incompatible system modifications.

  • Data loss on HDD due to formatting, trying to get data back

    Hey guys,
I'm an idiot. I'll get that out of the way right now. I'm sure you'll agree with me when you read this.
I had three partitions, OSX, one for Windows 7 and one for xp. HFS+J, NTFS, NTFS. I realized i wasn't using the Windows installations, and that I'd rather have the empty space back for my mac.
I went into disk utility and deleted those two partitions.
I restarted to make sure it worked. But now it can't find even my HFS partition.
I used TestDrive, a free terminal-based piece of software to try to rebuild my partition map. No avail. On the other hand, I know what the start and end sectors are of the partition I want to recover. I don't care for the windows ones.
I used the terminal "dd" command to make a sector-by-sector copy of it to a .dmg, but when i try to mount it, my mac tells me that it has no partition map and cannot be mounted.
I don't want to spend money on this.
I did not do a zero-data format. My data IS definitely on the drive. I never modified the drive after my accidental format.
I pulled the drive out of my mac and installed a new one in. It was time for an upgrade anyway.
On the new one, i reinstalled OS X 10.5.I don't know where my 10.6 disk is. The old partition was running Snow Leopard. That's where I've been transferring all this data to, but the transferred data doesn't mount.
In the long run, I have an external HDD that i would put the final .dmg on. The .dmg would be an exact copy of my currently nonexistent partition so that I could just boot into my OSX disk and use Disk Utility to "restore" my new HDD to mirror that image.
    That should work, right?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    pchalla90

    That should work, right?
Probably not. It is unlikely that the dd command copied the partition data necessary for Disk Utility to restore the raw sector contents to a partition -- basically, you have nothing to tell it how to map the file system (assuming it is intact) into the partition scheme of the drive. I'm not familiar with TestDrive, so I don't know if or how it could supply this missing info, but my guess is that you will have to do that to use the dmg.
Whatever you do, do not allow anything to be written to the original drive. Data recovery directly from it may be your only hope.
