Trying to get my MacBook Pro to show up on home network.

I just bought a Macbook pro and am realtively new to macworld. It will access the network and internet with no issues at all. Yet when I try to access the Macbook pro from my Windows Vista computers, I cannot see the MacBook.  Why?

Maybe you did not add a new Partition.

  • Trying to get my MacBook Pro to recognize external hard drive

Hey everyone. I'm fairly new to the forums but I've been a Mac user for almost 15 years now. Unfortunately, on the tech side of things, I'm mediocre at best so I have a question I wanted to see if anyone could offer a few suggestions or even a small glimmer of hope.
I have a LaCie Porsche Firewire based 160 GB external drive. It was mostly used for my G4 tower running classic OS. It apparently died all of the sudden (no trauma or anything..just wouldn't show up on my desktop). I took it and connected it to my MacBook Pro and it still wouldn't show up. On System Profiler, it wouldn't detect the type of drive or size and on Utilities, it wouldn't read at all.
Knowing LaCie, I thought it was the drive case (It's a seagate inside) so I got another external casing (a USB 2 type from Circuit City).
That failed to produce any kind of detection on the MacBook Pro as well. I have Disk Warrior but since it's not detecting, it won't recover any data. And I fear the worst at this point.
But if anyone has any suggestions as to how to get that drive to be detected, I'd be eternally grateful. I've checked the firewire and USB cords and they seem fine.
I have a G4 (digital audio) tower...can I try to install the drive INTO that tower and do a target mode startup?
Can I connect it via firewire to the tower and do a target startup from my MacBook Pro externally?
Should I try a different, particular external casing?
I'm willing to try anything before sending it out for data recovery. I realize it may be my only hope but I simply can't afford the service right now unfortunately.
Any suggestions...ANY suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I would be eternally grateful if I could somehow salvage even half of the files that are super important to me personally and professionally both.
Thanks in advance and a happy new year to everyone.

It's either the drive, the case, or both. Make tests to eliminate each factor.
I assume it makes the spinning noise, and it's IDE/PATA and 3.5" form factor, and it's formatted so all your machines (Classic, OSX) can see it.
-Yes, I would try another case. Some cases require the bare drive to have a jumper set to master, slave, or cable detect. There is no telling how yours come in the Lacie, or what a new case may require. At worst, you look on the chart on the drive case, and try all 3. I make a point of having a known good case, and I prefer Firewire. Look at Disk Utility when the case is connected and note whether it even sees a case connected (which has its own interface chip), even if a drive is not seen or mounted. Ditto with System Profiler.
-Yes, you can install it internally in your G4 tower. For purposes of seeing if it works at all, don't bother with Target Disk Mode, just connect it and see if it mounts on the G4. Again, be aware of the master/slave/cable select jumper setting required.
-It may be that the bare drive is blown. For most people, a data recovery service may be the only answer. Expensive.

  • I have iCloud running on my iPad. But when trying to get my macbook pro on iCloud, my Apple ID is not accepted.  What am I doing wrong?

    Can you help?

I know it is not the best advice, but the easiest way would be to delete your app from your device and then to re-download it from the App Store again by using your new Apple ID.

I keep saying this over and over, in the hope that people who do a search will find it.  Apple cannot possibly test for or be reponsible for the bazillion combinations of adapter, cables, and TV's out there.  The only monitors that are 100% guaranteed to work with the MacBook Pro are the Cinema Displays and Thunderbolt Displays, because, they're made by Apple.  They're expensive, but they work perfectly.
My guess is that you bought a cheap MDP to HDMI cable, or have a defective one.  From my reading of these boards over the past few months, cheap cables have a high failure rate.  And the regular priced ones have only a slightly less of one.  Try a new one.  Make sure you do not damage the Thunderbolt port.

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.

I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.
My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

Im having trouble getting my macbook pro to boot up after a fail safe boot, im getting as far as the grey screen with the apple loggo. so im trying to run a disk repair but is saying the disk is locked, how do i unlock disk??

    Some clarification may help.
You say you cannot boot normally.  It shows a gray screen with the Apple logo.
Did you say it will boot successfully in Safe Mode (boot, then hold down the Shift key)?
How did you boot the machine to run Disk Utility?  (Which keyboard combinations)?

Dave I'm glad to say that it works perfectly but I'm embarrassed to say that my 12 year old nephew hooked it up in about 10 minutes.
If you have the Kanex Mini DisplayPort cable it will work, what confused me was changing the display settings in System Preferences,
and dragging the mac screen from the mac onto the tv. Sorry I cant be more helpful but you have the right cable now you need a 12 year old nephew.
    Good luck Derek

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro running on OS 10.8.2 to a Linksys EA3500 router and when I go to click on the set up icon I get an "unsupported operating system". Any suggestions on what to do? The Linksys site is useless. Do I need some kind of upgrade?

Don't use the CD software its not necessary.
Infact put it in the trash.
Your router will have an IP address in the range 192.168.1.1
Connect your router to your Mac via Ethernet cable (They usually supply one with the router and don't worry which end goes where the Mac LAN socket is bi-directional)
Also connect your router to your telephone line.
Now open your Web browser Safari . Type in the IP address above and a Javascript control panel will launch
Enter the default password and username (They are on a label on the router )
Your now have the ability to set up your router.
Your will need the password and user name supplied to you by your ISP at a minimum.
Enter these and most modern routers automatically configure the basic networking setting.
You now need to go to the security setting and set this as WPA2 Personal (NOT Enterprise) or WPA2 with AES and TKIP which ever it refers to and create a pass-phase. WRITE it down
    You should be online.
Now remove the cable and connect to the Wifi and enter that passphase.

How can I get the phone numbers in contacts to appear with dashes between the first 3 numbers, the next 3 numbers, and the last 4 numbers?  Until very recently
it did so.  Contacts on my macbook pro does show up this way.  I do have a mobile me account and in the past syncing was no problem.  What setting has changed?

The phone number format as well as the date language and format and the time format are controlled by the Region Format setting. Go to Settings > General >International > Region Format.  When you change a region format, you can go back one page (to International) and see an example of the date/time/phone number format that your selected region format will produce.

  • How do I get my email address recently changed on my account in iTunes on my MacBook Pro to show up on the sign-on notice on my iPad (4th gen)?

How do I get my email address recently changed on my account in iTunes on my MacBook Pro to show up on the sign-on notice on my iPad (4th gen)?  It reflects my old email address and therefore won't recognize my password.  When I try to do something on the App Store on my iPad, it brings up a notice to sign on, which reflects the old email address, and rejects my password since the username/email address is no longer correct.  Puzzled!

I have another question for the community.  My daughter tells me that my texts to her show my primary email address as the account name of the sender (me) when I text her, rather than my cell phone number from which I'm texting her.  I've had others report that to me too. How do I turn that off so that recipients see my cell phone number displayed as the sending party and not my email address?  Thanks -

I am trying to hook my MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. I have used the same setup with three other TV's, each a different brand with no problem. Any ideas?

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.
