Trying to get playlists to new computer

I was able to transfer all of my music directly from my broken computer's harddrive to my new computer on iTunes, but I cannot get the playlists to work.  Other help articles suggested going "File>Library>Import playlist", but that isn't an option that I see when I'm in iTunes (File>Library leads to "turn on home sharing" or "get album artwork" only)
I know where the itunes library.itl files are, but I cant get it to work.  I also tried pressing shift while opening iTunes, but when I chose itunes library.itl or itunes library.xml, nothing happens.  Am I supposed to chose something else?
Any insight would be appreciated!!

I don't think you're looking in the File menu there (that sounds like you're in the menu that comes off the wee boxy icon thing).
Click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Once you've brought up the menu bar, you should be able to see the File menu.

  • Can't get playlist on new computer

I recently purchased a new computer. I downloaded itunes and signed in to my account but my existing playlist is not showing up. Can anyone tell me why??

Have you transferred your music from your old computer? You want to copy the entire iTunes folder (assuming that your music is stored in the default location). In your iTunes folder should be all of your music/videos/etc as well as your iTunes.itl file, which is where all of your playlist and metadata (ratings, playcounts, etc) is stored.

  • I recently lost my windows laptop due to a virus. I had backed up all files onto a drive(files only). However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes deletes all data

I recently lost my windows laptop due to a virus. I had backed up all files onto a drive(files only). However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes wants to  deletes all data off of my iphone so i click cancel
i want to update to iOS 5 and still have itunes be able to copy my playlists from my iphone. for free. why does apple provide a recovery from iphone option?

If you have a backup, restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the computer.  This restores the library and device association files.  If for some reason you chose to only back up the media and not the entire iTunes folder, then the only option is to let iTunes wipe the drive and re-sync.

Hi, I have 227 songs in my itunes, when im trying to get them to new iphone 5s-only 66 songs are coming, memory is not full, any helpfull tips pls?Thnx

I should mention that, for the first problem, I do make sure that my new tracks are stored in the folder where I told iTunes that my music is in. Also, when I say the cataloging of my library stops short of cataloging all my songs, I have tried leaving the computer unattended for days (my computer's sleep mode is disabled). It always stops before cataloging all of my music regardless of whether I am doing something else while iTunes is cataloging, or if I just let iTunes be the only program that's open during the cataloging process.

    Hi Mileymarie,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The article below will help you troubleshoot the issue you are having with your iPhone connecting to your PC:
How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1567
If an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is not recognized in iTunes on Windows, the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) may need to be restarted. Alternatively, you may see the following error when connecting your device:"This [device] cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device Service is not started."
This document explains how to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS)
Set the Apple Mobile Device Service Startup type to Automatic
Remove and reinstall iTunes and AMDS

  • I have CDs, legally purchased and uploaded to iTunes (v9.1.0.79)...they were on a harddrive and now I tried to play on my new computer (iTunes v11.0.2.26), but whilst the files appear intact they skip through each song in seconds...why?  and how to fix?

I have CDs, legally purchased and uploaded to iTunes (v9.1.0.79)...they were on a harddrive and now I tried to play on my new computer (iTunes v11.0.2.26), but whilst the files appear intact they skip through each song in seconds...why?  and how to fix?

I don't recognise the symptoms as such, but here are a couple of things to try.
    Check all tracks
Unchecked tracks are skipped during normal track to track playback. Go to the Songs view and CTRL-click on an empty checkbox, or CTRL-click on a filled one twice. This will ensure all tracks are checked.
    Repair permissions
To make sure that your iTunes folder (or media folder if located separately) has the correct permissions, right-click on the folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but later versions of Windows shouldn't be too different.
You can also clear the Read-Only flag for the entire library from the Properties dialog.

  • My daughters computer crashed, got new one. Trying to transfer ipod to new computer only does some of content tells me I need to aurtherize computer my wife shared itunes with daughter that ipod is gone now and dont have password.

Trying to transfer ipod to new computer. It is telling me to autharize computer. Had another ipod on same account, it gone now. Don't have password or any info about it. What do I do?

The password is for your iTunes account. Not for your old iPod. Enter your Email and password will give you access to all the music you bought from iTunes.  If you forget it then I dont know how to help you there guess your SOL.

  • Upgrading computer, do I install itunes on new computer? How does my content on old computer get to my new computer?

I am upgrading to a new HP ProBook 6470b computer w/ Windows 7, do I install itunes on new computer or somehow transfer the files from the old Dell D620 Windows XP computer ? How does my content on old computer get to my new computer? Would like to find the best way to do this. Thanks!

Yes.  You should copy everything ( music, apps, pcis, docs, contacts, calendars, etc) from your old computer to your new one.
You can type "move itunes library" into the google search bar for instructions on itunes.
Certainly your computers have a methed for moving all of your content from one comptuer to another.

  • Computer Crashed- trying to get songs onto new iTunes

My computer crashed a few weeks ago. I am trying to get the songs I purchased on my "old" computer that are now only on my iPod onto my "new" computer. I somehow was only able to transfer 3 songs that I had bought. I don't know how I could only transfer 3 and not the rest. Please help!

Were the songs all purchased from a single Store account or from more than one. If the songs were purchased under different accounts then you would need to authorise the computer for each one. Failing that there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists (including purchases) from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • How do I import playlists from my old computer to my new computer.  I followed the instructions to export the playlists, but when I tried to import on the new computer the files were nowhere to be found?

I saved my playlists on my new computer as per the instructions in iTunes help.  Then I tried to import the playlists on my new computer but the files were nowhere to be found.  Found the correct directory, but not there.  my computers are connected on a network, so I don't know what I am doing wrong?  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Paul Constantine

Copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new one.
