Trying to get proper sound

Hi,
I have very low sound in my laptop with alsa so I wanted to try pulseaudio and oss. In ubuntu sound works great which has pulse by default. I tried setting up pulse in Arch with KDE but it doesn't seem to work. I tried oss and it doesn't work either. When I try to use /etc/rc.d/oss start the system just hangs.
Any suggestions?:(

pulseaudio is tricky, I forget what they are called but I believe its pavucontrol and pavumeter or something like that, just look them up (Pulse Audio Volume...) so pavu<xxx>.  Those helped to set the proper inputs and things. You just have to fight with it a bit.
First, when you install OSS you don't have to remove ALSA (if I remember correctly) Your best bet is to follow the Arch Wiki guides when installing each one, they are what I use when dealing with sound because sometimes it can be a bit of a nightmare.  Secondly, I had some issues where I had to set a dbus error so that pulseaudio would default the correct card as the 1st card so I didn't have to keep changing it and resetting all the settings each time I rebooted.  It depends if you have more than one sound card or not.  Good luck!

I have an X-Fi Platinum s/c running on Windows Ult7 64. I am trying to get my headphones to only hear radio chatter in FSX or FS2004, and other noises on my main speakers (engine, cockpit noises, etc...etc). Is there any way to do this?

There was a program listing a few weeks back for virtual audio cable. Do a google for that and see if that suits your needs.

  • Trying to get my sound card to work with ArchLinux

Okay, let me tell you my problem. I'm still somewhat of a noob when it comes to linux so don't be hard on me . And, yes that's half of my problem, anyways I've got a sound card called the Soundblaster X-FI USB and I've been trying it to get it to work with the alsaconf command which hasn't worked of course Let me point out that whenever I use my backup flashdrive with PuppyLinux it the Alsaconf inside of it see's the card that I'm using and automatically sets it up.. Plus whenever I type the ' cat /proc/asound/cards ' command I get this..
    0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel

So please help me out here I really want to have sound again and hey maybe I'll learn something new about linux!

there's some experimental driver that maybe makes it work with alsa, see here:
    http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … &px=Njc3NQ
My card is a USB which isn't compatible with the driver that they include. So no help there ;(. I've loaded Ubuntu recently and it has worked perfectly with my soundcard (Creative X-FI USB Surround 5.1) right out of the box. I personally think there has to be a way to get it to work in Archlinux since it worked in Ubuntu...
Although. I suppose I could just use Ubuntu but I'm more of a fan of Arch. So does anyone have any idea what Ubuntu used as in drivers wise to get my card to work in linux??

    HI there,
There are a couple things you can try. The first thing I would recommend is resetting all settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. If that doesn't work, take a look at the article below for additional troubleshooting steps.
Note: The article title impies that it is for iPhones, but the troubleshooting steps are still aplicable to iPads.

  • Trying to get this "One" sound with Logic pro 8

Hi everyone i spent like 2 hours last night trying to get this sound with Logic Pro 8 soft synths trying to find a sound exactly like or close to this sound: http://home.comcast.net/~tommykry/Weezer%20-%20Troublemaker.mp3
The sound can be heard at 00:19 and through out the song, its like a low bass synth kind of sound that drifts down when its hit, like a portamento kind of thing. In live weezer videos the bass player is hitting a pad on a keyboard so i know its a key sound not a bass guitar slide. ive heard this sound in trance and techno songs as well. I have Sonar 8 and pro tools 8 as well and can look there if i have too, also have an Access viress Ti, But im trying to do this all in Logic. Like i said i played around for like more than 2 hours going through most of all the Logic synths, patch after patch trying to find something close i could tweak, so if anyone has more experience with The Soft synths in Logic Pro 8 and can steer me in the right direction i would be greatful.
    Thanks
    Tommy

He could just be triggering a bass slide sample...
It's some kind of bass sound that bends down, in a similar style to what a bass player might do. Whether it's a real bass or a synth is difficult to say (and probably doesn't matter a great deal), but in any case it's certainly compressed, and grunged up dirty with some amp sim or distortion...
    Try that route...

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either.  I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
    3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    10. Reset the NVRAM.
    11. Reset the SMC.
    12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    13. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

I am trying to connect my Apple TV to an older Panasonic projection TV using an HDMI to a DVI cable to the Digital IN. I cannot get any sound. Can you help?

DVI interface does't allow audio. Is there optical IN from your Panasonic TV? By then you can connect your ATV to Panasonic using optical together. It will work.

  • I have a macbook pro 5,3 white I am trying to hook up to a samsung hdtv.  I have used a mini dv to hdmi adapter but I get no sound on my tv.  What can I do to get sound?

I have a macbook pro 5,3 white I am trying to hook up to a samsung hdtv.  I have used a mini dv to hdmi adapter but I get no sound on my tv.  What can I do to get sound?

The Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adaptor will only pass video in most cases. You will need to run a separate audio cable along with it. Likely a 3.5mm (male-to-male) cable. Or a 3.5mm (male) to red/white RCA (male) cable. Just depends on what audio input ports your TV has dedicated to the HDMI input.

  • I no longer have sound for either my audio books or my music on itunes.  I've tried everything--restarting, updating, re-installing audible app, and restoring the iphone to its factory settings--nothing helps.  How do I get the sound back?

How do I get the sound back on my iPhone 4?  I've tried all the fixes such as restarting iPhone, reinstalling the audible app, and finally yesterday, I restored the phone to its factory settings.  I still get no sound from music on iTunes or from my audible books.  The phone still rings (I have sound for that) and the voice control speaks to me, and when I'm typing, the automatic text voice speaks so I can hear it but nothing else works.

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • Iphone to ATV2 Click Air Play on iphone and get only sound on ATV. Tried CNN, Revison 3 all apps

iphone 4 using apps such as CNN and Revision 3. Click the icon on a video that selects Apple TV.  Get the sound for the app  on ATV2 but do not get the video.
this used to work.  Do not see any options that need to be changed.

Due to Apple HAVING to work with the "big boys" when it comes to distributing music and videos, the HAVE to be strict about how their devices work to appease the labels. Thus there are rules about how the iPhone and iPods sync to avoid piracy.
With that said, as you have read elsewhere, backups are your responsibility. It is not Apple's fault that you failed to maintain proper backups of your computer. The iPhone and iPod are not marketed as a backup device, the extend your library allowing you to take a licensed copy with you.
Now, if you turn off auto sync in iTunes. Sign into iTunes store (on computer) then connect iPhone. Then from file menu choose to transfer purchased content, it WILL take off any content you bought via the iTunes store (because it can see you own it by your account info). Any other content you got from rips or from another source, will be lost.
    The end.

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via control centre : swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen and it's the right-most of the 5 icons in the middle of it (if the icon is white then it's 'on', tap it to turn it grey and 'off'). The function that isn't on the side switch is set via control centre instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • Trying to get sound from my X-FI Fatal1ty Titanium Pro. to Home Theatre via Optical Ca

Hi wondering if anyone has done this but I can't seem to get it to work. I have a X-Fi Fatalty Titanium Pro(w/o the Li've Dri've) on Vista 32-bit. Anywho it has the Optical I/O on the card itself and I am trying to hook this up to my Home Theater system. I have the optical already hooked up to the output on the card, and into my DVD input on my Yamaha receiver but am not getting any sound. So far that's all I have done, is there settings I am more than likely missing either in the Vista sound, creative console, etc....
Note:? I had this working before on my onboard sound and on XP, but since with the onboard I could only get some sounds playing through my home theater I decided to get this Fatalty Titanium card and the sound settings in Vista seems really vague not a lot of options.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andy

I have a Yamaha RX-V3800, it's fairly new and supports just about every thing except true THX.
Not sure what DDL means, it just seems to me I am having a lot harder time with Vista setting than with XP. I had a X-Fi XtremeGamer installed but because it didn't have any Digital out so I had to use my onboard sound which has digital out in conjunction with my XtremeGamer. At least with XP you can choose say all my wave, payback sounds, etc.... to go through one device or the other, in my case either through the Realtek HD or the CL X-Fi XtremeGamer.
Now that I have the Fatalty and Vista and onboard sound disabled, I have a hard time seeing any options and settings if any at all that Vista has. ? Oh yes also with my old setup with the two sound devies, the only problem I had was that if I di'vert all the sound to my Home Theatre I would lose the sound in my Headset which I didn't want and had to change back and forth the audio devices to what I wanted.
I hope this helps answer your questions a little, and maybe help me answer mine.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Not getting any sound trying to record external synth in GB

I'm trying to record my Alesis Andromeda synth into GB but not getting any sound. I am using an Emagic AMT-8 as a midi i/f & a MOTU 828mkII as a soundcard. Both are set up correctly in core midi/audio as I normally use Logic Pro 7 with no problems.
In GB I add a new real instrument track & select the relevant input to corespond to my 828mkII, I then turn monitor 'on' but I am not getting any sound back to the 828mkII. Preferences shows that this soundcard is recognised.
I can play AU instruments or GB instruments from the Andromeda so the midi connection is good.
    Any ideas? cheers....

The Andromeda is plugged into line inputs 1&2 of the 828mkII (which is inputs 3&4 as the mic inputs are 1&2), The outputs of the 828mkII are plugged into my Genelec monitors. I know the set up works as I use Logic all the time, just can't get any sound in GB.
    thanks.
