Trying to get System Folder 9 up in OS X

Hi,
I received my Mother-In-Law's iMac DV as a present for my 5 year old. She had the upgrade version of OS X installed over 9 (i think 9.2.2). She was very particular about deleting her old data that was on the drive, and we tried to delete files, but kept getting stuck. I am vary familiar with Windows, so thought a clean install of the OS would work fine to wipe drive...which it did.
However, she bought some programs that need OS 9 to run. Tried to open them up, but it's asking for system folder for 9. There is nothing in the drive for it. After doing some research, it sounds like I need to transplant a system folder from:
A: the original install or system restore disks (which I've tried, but didn't see anything on them that looked like what the various websites I've visited described).
B: a retail version of OS 9 to reinstall (My Uncle-In-Law gave me a grey OS 9 install disk, vs. the orange system restores that my Mom-In-Law had).
C: None of the above.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, WIBoomer1 -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
In order to have Classic available on the machine, you will need to install OS 9.1, OS 9.2.1, or OS 9.2.2. OS 9.1 is the minimum version that can be used for Classic; OS 9.2.x provides better compatibility in that mode.
The iMac DV (Slot Loading) models originally came with OS 8.6, so its original Software Install or Software Restore disks will not be suitable.
You will need to use a retail OS 9 Install CD in some version, then update that as needed using download updaters to get to the final version of OS 9 that you want. OS 9 Install CDs can be obtained at places like -
http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html
EBay is another possibility.
Regardless of the source, be sure to get a retail OS 9 Install CD. Retail OS 9 Install CDs have a white label with a large gold 9 on them. The retail OS 9 Install CDs have a universal installer; model-specific Install CDs (gray or gray-blue label, with a machine model specified) do not. There is no model-specific OS 9 Install CD (Software Install) that is usable for that model iMac.
I would recommend getting either a retail OS 9.1 Install CD or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD. If you want to end up at OS 9.2.x, get a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD - this will eliminate the need for one or more download updates.
OS 9 can not be copied from an OS 9 Install CD. It must be installed from it, by running the install app (Mac OS Install) on the CD. This installer will not run in OSX - it will run only when the machie is booted to OS 9. This usually means booting the machine to the CD.
When the machine is booted to the OS 9 Install CD, if the icon for the hard drive does not appear on the desktop, then when the hard drive was erased while installing OSX the option to install OS 9 drivers was probably not selected. If OS 9 drivers are not installed, the drive will not be available when the machine is booted to OS 9.

  • I have been trying to get a feature/functionality in my Apple system -- have asked about it in Apple stores all over the country from coast to coast, and have received no response. How can I speak with someone at Apple that will help?

    Greetings whomever reads this.
I have 2 issues that Apple has not been able to resolve, that are vexing me.
    1) Somehow I have 2-3 apple IDs ... passwords etc. I have purchased 2 iPads, 2 -3 iPhones, a Macbook Pro, and a Mac Mini with Thunderbolt monitor. Somewhere in that process I might have created another Apple ID, not sure. When the confusion started, I went to an Apple store, and they suggested I create a new Apple ID, against my better judgement I did, which added to the confusion. Now, every time I need to sign in using my Apple ID for anything, I have no idea what user ID goes with what password. I have gone to Apple stores several time to try to get this situation cleared up and each time they try to get me to create yet another Apple ID. Now I won't do that anymore, but the original confusion remains. How can I wipe out all Apple IDs and just have one?
    2) I have been trying to get a particular functionality/feature/capability added to my Mac system. Don't want to go into detail here because someone will steal my idea and make millions. I have posed this question to Mac personnel from Geniuses, to Business Teams -- no one can figure it out. How do I get this fabulous capability I have thought up to come to life so I can make millions?

Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

Yes, when booted into 10.4, double click on Macintosh HD on the Desktop, what folders do you see there?
Also, open Disk Utility, click on the whole drive on the left, click on the blue Info button, does it report OS9 Drivers installed like mine...

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

I have a Mac 10.5.8 op system.  My Contacts do not syn with I cloud.  Trying to get my address book complete on both systems and now I have lots of duplicates on I cloud adress book.  How do I efficiently merge the duplictes that are now on I cloud?

You cannot use iCloud with Leopard 10.5.8. The minimum requirement is Lion 10.7.2. If you have been syncing your contacts with iCloud you can only have been doing it by some sort of unsupported hack, and if it doesn't work it's unlikely to be possible to find an explanation. If you have been using other (compliant) devices by trying to sync using both iTunes and iCloud you are likely to get duplicates.
A computer old enough running Leopard may well not be upgradeable to Lion or Mountain Lion, but if you can do so this is the only way you are going to be able to make proper use of iCloud.
    The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications). (If you are currently pre-Snow Leopard you will have to upgrade to that to access the Mac App Store: it's available in the online Apple Store.)
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

I'm trying to get a public link to my pdf file? I tried the system's process and the links don't work. I can't even copy the links I have to write them down and then enter them. Is anyone else having this problem. I've seen this question a couple times with no replies.

    Hi mariondouglas,
Do I understand correctly that you've used Send to send a file that you've uploaded to Acrobat.com? What happens when you send to your own email address? Are you able to click the link in that email, and access the file that way?
If you're unable to copy the email in the browser window after you've generated a public link, please clear the browser cache, and try again. Or, use a different web browser (for a list of supported browsers, see System requirements | Acrobat.com).
Please let us know how it goes.

With respect, you actually cannot store folders on the left side of the Dock - only on the right side. I wonder if you're talking about Launchpad, which looks like a silver rocket and shows you your installed applications? It's not actually a shortcut to the Applications folder, though. You can certainly drag Launchpad into the left side of the Dock from the Applications folder.
